I always used to mix down the arrangement into a stereo track and then work on the vocal after. That's amateur! Thanks for showing me how to create a headphone mix. Ive been way too lazy for years, really appreciated! 🎶
You don't need a control room or studio for the "control room" features to be useful. If nothing else, getting access to the cue mixes will be handy even for a solo musician. I use it to get a custom mix for recording against without messing up my overall mix in progress. You should check out the video Chris links about the control room.
Hey Chris I'm having an issue that is probably more of a focusrite issue than a cubase issue, but I've successfully created 4 individual cue mixes for an upcoming live recording project with my band, however, I'm having an issue where ALL of the cue mixes are playing out of ALL the outputs even though I created individual mixes...can you offer an idea of what I might do to get each mix to be heard out of only one input (which I've already routed)? Thanks in advance
Man I hope Steinberg is buying your houses and resort islands for you!!! You are the authority on Cubase in my books!!! Just bought 11 pro, new i7 computer and an x32. Did all this years ago on 8 track cassette format.... Thank god you're here Chris!!! Lol THANK YOU FOR BEING SO EFFEN COOL ABOUT TEACHING!!!!!
Very nice video. Thank you for taking the time to do this. I was very frustrated because when I would turn the fader down, the headphone mix would also go down. I was trying to get a good click in my ear (the drummer), but I did not want this click in the main mix. What I needed was pre-fader. Now, here is a tip. If your channel width is too narrow, you will not have the option to choose pre-fader. I was frustrated beyone believe for about 1/2 hour before I stumbled across this video and found that I could right click and select "Move to pre". Then, I found that if I increase the channel width, I could simply click the icon. Bummer how you end up spending time because of a display glitch. But, if you know many ways, you can work around anything.
Hey Chris, even though I’m really into the cue mixes I knew by watching all your video I would still learn something and that’s the pre and post fairer options 👍 However, I believe your viewers would gain massive benefits from you adding 2 missing items. 1st is a link to your video regarding setting up to avoid latency using direct monitoring and a separate reverb only for the due mix (Jason asked about latency in a comment below) and 2nd is a massive benefit of Cubase and that is to download the IC Pro app for any iPad (app $20 on the App Store - unfortunately IOS only) so that each musician with an iPad can adjust their own mix which saves time and frustration asking you to adjust their mix! Amazing feature!. Even my ancient iPad2 works seamlessly and I nearly threw it out cos it’s good for nothing else- keep your old iPads and iPhones just for IC Pro!). I also use an iPad as a control interface as you have multi touch faders, transport controls and tens of customisable buttons for nearly every Cubase menu command (great for shortcuts like ‘set punch in to cursor” and more complicated options. It’s such an underrated feature and worth a separate video 😉 Hope that helps everyone.
Yes, this helped me heaps thanx. I use the IC pro app & it would be great for above application. For information on how I just set up my cue mix with direct monitoring as well using Focusrite Clarett: I set up a Cue mix from VST connections F4 in Cubase & sent it out to Focusrite ports 5 & 6. On Focusrite app (on computer) I went to Headphone 2 (my vocalist's headphone) & clicked on custom mix, deleted the original main out (software) clicked on the + & added software playback from the right pop up where I chose 5-6 & all done. It took me a while to work this out, so, maybe this may help out someone slow like me? Ha.
Question, I would like to run a sub woofer as stereo plus bass. Is it better to use 3 line outs as LRS L R Sub or 5.1 or use a stereo 2 way crossover? I could good either way. Or is there a better way Cubase11.Pro. thanks for you efforts it helps many of us
Thanks Chris I'd also be interested in your hardware set up i.e. your computer what RAM speeds, Processor speeds, etc. You might have a video where you discuss these things. At the moment I only record myself but I am impressed with all these features that can be used should I record a group..
Hey, thanks for the video. Is it possible to each one of the players to control the mix levels right from their phone/browser? (it is possible in Reaper)
A possibility, depending of workflow or taste is following too: for example, my interface has only a pair of outputs that are different than the main ones. So in Control Room I set up a Headphone mix, assigned to outputs 3 and 4 and set up different cue mixes, assigned to no output. Later, depending on which cue mix I want in the headphones, I route them in the right zone, activating the corresponding buttons. It works well. Only problem, there are no musicians that come to my home since centuries 😹. But I can have mixes prepared to myself and then assign them to the headphones simply by clicking on the button at the right zone. Maybe too much for one person, but it works good.
Hey bro, how do you connect your interface’s outputs to a headphone amplifier? I’m trying to do it here connecting my outs to an aux input in the headphone amp but I only get signal on one of the sides of my headphone. I’m using a stereo cable like it’s normal to this occasion :/ can you help me please? Thank you!!
@@manualofalternativemusic Hello. That depends on the inputs. In my case my headphone amp has balanced inputs, so I use balanced cable from outputs 3 and 4 that go to two balanced inputs on the amp. I guess the aux input in your headphone amp is a stereo one, not balanced, so you must find a way to go from two of your interface line outputs (probably balanced) to one stereo connector. If you are sending just one interface output to this aux input, that is mono, as the individual hardware interface outputs are mono (at least in all cases I know). Maybe you are believing that the stereo cable should work, but if you are using just one interface output (mono) what I believe is that this is a balanced cable instead, carrying mono balanced signal, so when you put it in the aux input it gets just mono signal.
Thanks a lot bro! Yeah my interface outs are balanced, and my headphone amp has stereo unb. Inputs - what I tried to do is to connect the stereo outs through a “Y” cable going into the aux input. Is it correct? Thanks a lot bro (;
@@manualofalternativemusic Doing that is basically throw one balanced output in a TS connector, same with the second and then send those two to a TRS connector. I would advice you search for proper ways to convert balanced mono to unbalanced mono as, depending on the way your interface balanced signal is built, this can even be dangerous. It is not as simply like to connect a TS connector to the balanced output. Normally the cheapest interfaces build the balanced signal in such a (cheap) way that if you put a TS connector there is no problem, but it can damage the output if the balanced output circuit is built in the “right” way, as you can be short circuiting two wires.
@@korkenknopfus it’s just a behringer 1820, it’s not my main interface I just use it to rehearse with my band - that’s why I need the headphone aux thing by the way hahaha it’s “quasi-balanced” according to some sources. I’m aware that connecting the wrong cables can cause damage, thanks for sharing it! Would you recommend something bro? Thanks a lot dude, you’re really helping me out
hi chris, so in order to have different mixes for each musician I need to connect amplifiers to my Focusrite interfase outputs and then connect headphones to those amplifiers? is there a multi-amp for headphones in the market?
hello Chis, is there a way to convert groove agent 5 rendered audio to mono tracks(mix from l and r)? or is it any plugin that will make real mono from stereo track? regards....
The master meter only reflects the mix signal even when switching to the cue. Is there a way of maybe routing the cue to the master so that when you switch back and forth between the mix and the cue, the meter reading corresponds accordingly?
Hello nice video....but im having some problems with cue mix...i have connected my main studio monitors to outputs 1 and 2 added 2 cue mixes: cue 1 to 3-4 (headphones) and cue 2 to 5-6 to a live monitor...and done everything in this video... the problem is when im adjusting the sound level to cue 1 it effects the sound level in cue 2... i have tryed and switching to pre fader but it doesnt help....what can be the problem?
Hi bro! Great video! What cables/how do you make the connection from the interface to the headphone amp/aux inputs from the headphone amp? I can’t get my stereo outs to aux in on the headphone amp to work right. Thanks! (:
Hey Chris- great videos! I'm using two interfaces to get 16 recording channels using the ADAT inputs between the two- can I set up a cue mix utilizing both interfaces? Basically I use the the second interface (Steinberg UR 824 which I love) for drums
Hey Chris, thanks for that tutorial. I started a mix, so I have a bunch of heavy inserts everywhere. I want to retrack a few bars on the drums, and I have a pretty huge latency happening. Is there a way to send myself a (almost) dry cue mix and hopefully avoid latency? Thanks a bunch
How do you keep the latency down for a cue mix? Singers usually get annoyed at even small delays in their ears, so I have to direct monitor from my Focusrite, but would love to use cue mix more often. Thanx Chris :)
Hey Jason, great question and Chris covered this really well on another video (search for ‘direct monitoring’). In short you must use your interface for direct monitoring so the performers signal comes into the interface and straight (direct) out before hitting Cubase, then just balance Cue2 mix master fader in control room vs the direct monitor signal but you must switch off the performers mic channel in the cue mix to avoid the echo.I have a Focusrite Scarlett and that doesn’t have any FX eg reverb which the singer usually needs to give a performance with feeling, so I open up a new track with reverb but with no output ie it doesn’t go to the stereo out but only activated in the cue mix. There will be some latency but reverb is a natural latency so it doesn’t matter! The complications come in setting up a perfect situation for them hearing their voice when punching in which you can play with record modes like manual and tape to suit your needs and even record to 2 channels, one that has monitor activated on playback and the other which doesn’t. Hope that helps!
My problem is the following, for my home studio I'm looking for someone who can help me install an output bus in cubase 10 pro, I work with 3 steinberg MR 816x. All three are linked together with 1 MR 816x being the leader (I know you have to turn them on in the correct order) these all work and record too, only I can only hear the first steinberg MR 816x while recording the others No. 2 and 3 I only hear when I play back what I have recorded. Now I would like to be able to send my recording to a headphone amplifier so that I can put a monitor mix in there and then people can play or sing while they hear it and themselves of course. So I'm looking for someone who knows cubase very well and knows how to install/program such things. And who also has audio interface devices such as the MR 816x, this one has been on the market for a while but they still work fine. mrs Geert
Control room was a game changes when it came out HOWEVER, it's been YEARS and Steinberg is still limiting us to 4 Cue mixes which is not enough when tracking to most basic rhythm section (Drums, Bass, Guitar, Piano, Vocals). Why can't the cue mixes be only limited to the amount of outputs we have? isn't the who idea is to be able to send as many Cue mixes your outputs allow? Steinberg please open the option for more Cue Mixes so we can use the full potential Cubase has!
