    Always first!! The 101st Airborne Division. My husband was with the 101st in 1967, deployed to Vietnam. We returned to Ft. Campbell, Ky many times in his 22 years with the USArmy. In fact our twin sons were born at Ft. Campbell. To all the veterans and all those who fell in that horrible war, many, many thanks. Three of my Dad’s brothers were there during That fateful time, one fell on that hallowed ground, and two returned home and went on to serve 25 years in US Army, and the other served 33 years in the US Marines.

    Plenty of applause for the modern day soldiers and the old vehicles - but the biggest was for that handful of veterans in the lead truck. And well deserved, too!

    My father landed on Omaha Beach on D- Day. Assigned to a Tank Destroyer Unit. He never really talked about it very much until after he turned 80.
    He was a beloved dad and hero to our family though.

    I was there with my group from Fairfax, Virginia on Sunday, June 4 and everyone in the town was lovely to us. Thank you so much to the people of Saint-Mere-Eglise for the warm welcome, and to all the young people working the food stands and restaurants who had to work extra hard to accommodate us.

      @HELMUT ALTO had the US joined the war in Europe earlier, combined forces between the UK, US, and USSR would've taken out Germany in a matter of months, it would've been to overwhelming for them, however the US still had to fight the war in the Pacific almost single handedly, aswell as build up a military powerful enough to take on the Germans, keep in mind almost are entire Pacific fleet was wiped out in the beginning of the war at Pearl Harbor, not only that but our planes in the airforce and navy were heavily outdated in the beginning of the war aswell. It wasnt until we had the Sherman Firefly that we even had a tank good enough to REMOTELY EVEN GET CLOSE to competing the German tanks, and it wasnt till the P-51 and P-47 in the airforce, that we could compete with German BF-109s and FW-190s, and it wasnt until the Corsair in the navy, that we could compete with the Japanese Zeros. After pearl harbor, the US had to do a complete rebuild of our Navy, I.E. the Iowa class battleships, North Carolina class battleships, South Dakota class battleships, and revamped Tennessee and New Mexico class ships, aswell as having to build alot of Carriers, Subs, and Destroyers.

    Their stories and memories were taken with them into the grave.
    The time is near there will be no survivor of the second war, their stories and memories will be gone soon also.
    Let us not forget what these men, and women, have given to the world.

    At first I thought it odd that the French would dress in American uniforms. After thinking about it, it's a good thing because they can honor and remember those who are still buried there. Growing up WW2 veterans were everywhere, it was hard not to find them. Now it's really hard to run into them as time has taken most of them.

    • @jeep146
      @jeep146 5 років тому +4

      @HELMUT ALTO There is a old saying Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. With the exit of Great Britain from the European Union and the rise of Nationalism I say good luck.

    • @jeep146
      @jeep146 5 років тому

      @HELMUT ALTO Last time, learn your history. After the first war France had built one of the most powerful and defensive walls in Europe. How long did it take to Germany to go around. America had one of the most powerful navies in the world. Yet Japan destroyed it in a few hours. America thought it could use it's might to over power north Vietnam. Nukes will not stop a war from happening. The man who invented the machine gun thought it would be so destructive no one would rage war. Kennedy almost attacked Cuba not knowing they had Nukes already installed. For men of power do you really think a few million lives matter? They would gamble with peoples lives, history does not change, people do not change.

    • @jeep146
      @jeep146 5 років тому +3

      @HELMUT ALTO No my friend, I assure you major powers have already calculated this all out. The first strikes would target nuclear launch areas, the rest would be targeted by the new missile defense systems. You and I have no access about these systems. You have a weapon, I will build a better one. You have a rocket, I will build one to kill it, it goes on and on. Then one day some nut feels he needs to save the world, even if it means blowing up 30% of it. Fantasy? It's human nature, it's history and it will happen one day. So that's why it's important to honor these dead so we not forget the cost of war.

      @@ommsterlitz1805 Oradour-sur-Glane was a terrible massacre and a war crime. But these young German soldiers do not feel they are representatives of the Nazi regime, but of a new and different Germany. Yes, the past should not be forgotten, otherwise it will repeat itself. But this is about international understanding. Didn't Russians, Americans, or French commit war crimes over the centuries? You know the answer. Like any army in the world that has fought. And that is not meant as an excuse.
      Even so, their armies march together on such days. To remember the dead. Unfortunately not the ideologies that sent these young men to their deaths. So, let's fight to prevent it from happening again. Wars only bring suffering, despair and death.

    It is always a good idea to put the horses in the back of a parade because shit happens.

    It is crazy that the reenactors in France are allowed to drive tanks but are not allowed to carry hand-guns. Group of Czech reenactors had replicas of Tommy Guns and the French police almost arrested them when they entered the square. Not the blank-firing guns, like in other countries, just toys! But the French police assume that French people will shit in their pants if they will see toy-guns in the hands. See the video here: dotyk.denik.cz/publicistika/francouzska-obec-mela-problem-ceske-reenactory-s-nefunkcnimi-replikami-samopalu-20180613.html

      Seulement en France il n'y a pas de tuerie de masse tous les jours, les armes sont interdites et c'est très bien.

      Devil Reject, good luck getting them up on the tanks safely and keeping them up there ... and getting them back down. I agree with you that it would have been cool, but having worked with the elderly I don’t know how it could have been done.
