beautiful performance. I searched for more of his singing after watching him in the performance, Christmas Concert at Strasbourg. He was one of my favorite singers there. So much soul and depth.

- Grieg was Norwegian (from Bergen) and the song is sung in Norwegian when sung by Norwegians. But at Grieg's time written Norwegian had not been revised away from Danish yet, so no doubt many believe the song is intended to be pronounced in Danish in all circumstances. It isn't!
- Danish and Norwegian are closely related dialects, entirely mutually intelligible and very similar, especially in written version, but the pronunciation is clearly different. Johannes Weisser is Norwegian and his pronunciation is native. You hear that from the first two words on. Actually, after listenings to many renderings of "Jeg elsker dig", pronounced in various ways and even by many Swedes (who should know better) in such a way that it sounds like an unnatural, very far from good Danish, I relax in pure delight listening to Weisser!
The original text IS Danish, by Hans Christian Andersen, that's right. But with Grieg's music it is always sung in Norwegian by Norwegian singers!
- All this in addition to his warm, beautiful voice and a sort of 'insight' into the text, simple though the verse is - close to heavenly, in my opinion. The only other rendering which I find similarly touching is one by Elisabeth Schwarzkopf (it is on youtube); hers is in German but very very delicate-sensitive. Johannes Weisser is at the top of my list, though.
PS: About language, it is the same when Danish stage plays are performed in Norway. While the text of other languages has to be translated into Norwegian, practically nothing has to be done to Danish, the original is just 'spoken' in Norwegian, more or less as it stands. A few idioms and words might be changed into something even more idiomatic in Norwegian, but even that is mostly not necessary. "Jeg elsker dig" has been used by Grieg unchanged.
