WADE FISHING for CRAPPIE {Catch Clean Cook} Spring Spawn

  • In this episode my girlfriend and I are meeting up with Gabe Spencer to learn how to go wade fishing for crappie during the spawn. Every spring the crappie in Texas lakes head up to the shallows to spawn in flooded brush. We're using 14-foot fishing rods and crappie jigs to pluck crappie out of tangled sticks and bushes, and it is an absolute blast! Then, back at Jen's place, we're showing you how to clean and cook crappie two ways.

Know what you mean…Surf fishing at New Smyrna Beach (shark bite capital of the world) with a pocket full of frozen shrimp. No fun worrying about losing my leg so had to rethink my bait strategy.

Something truly different Robert! Looked like so much fun. I love wade fishing for trout and salmon and the feel of water around my legs. (As long as the waders don't leak) Lol. p.s. I like how really nice you are to your girlfriend. Great vid.,

Different kind of fishing, I would use a cane pole-why not, no need for a reel. Beautiful fish and I know they are delicious. Great episode.

I think those were white crappie, ive only ever caught black crappie. Do they taste the same? Bro avid fisherman from the Bahamas and loved your video. I normally go to Lake Okeechobee with my friend here in South Florida and have never used a jig before but I am really interested. My friend uses bobbers, cane poles and live minnows, that this is my first time fresh water fishing since we only catch and eat saltwater fish. Tip always scale before you gut since it keeps the body more firm and use a fork or a knife to scale is better to me. But great video and keep up the good work!!

When you fillet them you can keep the tails on also...just push down and catch the tail when you are cutting that portion off the body. Also, on that size of fish you lose/waste A LOT of meat by trimming that rib section off.

Sucks it was cold man. You could have done a Southern Fried Shore Lunch with the beer batter. That would have been fun. You still did the beer batter though. I'm going to have to try it. Crappie sautees well too: little butter, a garlic clove, maybe some other spices...very nice.
Oh, your oil's too shallow for whole fried fish, you really need a fryer for it to cook thoroughly, evenly, and quickly.

You made that whole crappie into an accordian. That's why it fell apart so easily. Even good sized crappie like you had aren't very thick. Three slits would have been right. Also, the presentation with the heads cut off is still pretty nice. Can then get two into most pans that way. Crappie aren't big enough that most people will be picking around their heads for a few tiny morsels of meat anyways.
Thanks for the video. There are thousands of crappie videos but not many with people wade fishing. Part of the experience is learning, experimenting, improvising, adjusting, etc.

When they went wading in east Texas I thought they were trying to catch alligators with their legs? So when the gator bites you just grab it by the tail and throw it up into the boat! The host of the show asks his guide are there alligators in here his guide replies with "yyyyaaaa buttttt....." with that response I am sure the host and his girlfriend were feeling 100% relieved! 😂😂
