S2 E24 Hand building model railway track for Bexhill West
Вставка
- Опубліковано 18 тра 2023
- Hello everyone,
In this video I layout the timbering for one of the baseboards for my Bexhill West project.
I show the baseboard itself, laser engraved cork underlay, and laser cut fretworks of timbering which will be used to create the track.
This particular board is quite complex with lots of pointwork, and it's set on a curve. Aditionally, there is a subtle gradient along the length of the board of 1:200 rising to 1:93.
The trackwork will all be hand built using code 75 bullhead rail and plastic (Exactoscale) chairs. It is being built to 18.83mm gauge. - Розваги
James. Brilliant, as usual. Thank you for sharing. Pete.
Thanks for watching Peter, all the best. James
Hi James, I really like hand made track, you’re making a lovely job of that.
I look forward to the next episode whatever it maybe, cheers for now, John
As a life long model rail enthusiast your videos are amazing to watch ,and a bit above my skill level i must say ,i have recently retired and trying to plan my first model railway layout to go in a single garage as its the largest area i have ,just standard peco though i think ,
A great video. I love watching your work. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you very much. I'm pleased you like the videos.
Hi James, l love the way you cheated the process here! (Don't worry, I'm just lousy I don't have a 3D cutter et al). Your approach is very enlightening indeed. Thanks for sharing 😊
Thank you Peter. I've so much to do, if I didn't cheat a little it would never all get done. :)
Amazingly intuitive, thanks James for a very inspiring video.
Thank you Tom, I'm pleased you liked the video. :)
Don't worry about the length of the video. I could watch these videos all day !! -
Thank you Malcolm, there's plenty more to come. :)
@@BexhillWest Fantastic... the longer the better 🙂
Hi James- The hand made track looks really great and looking forward to the next episode.
Cheers Kev
Inspiring workmanship as always. Good trackwork, real or model, is a thing of beauty, and yours is going to be spectacular.
Thank you Roderic, I couldn't agree more about trackwork being a thing of beauty. Fingers crossed mine will turn out ok.
Thanks for watching,
James
Thank you James, really excellent, seeing the P4 Track makes you realise how out of scale OO is for 4mm scale.
Indeed. Quite a bit of work, but definitely worth it in my opinion.
Dear James, awesome how you’re doing and showing the particular section of the layout. Love your method of laser scribing the cork and laser cutting the ties to very same geography. Beautiful how the track looks with the bullhead rail sitting in the rail chairs. Am looking forward to your next episodes, whether it will be your coaches or the progress on the layout section.
On the rail chairs; after you posted your vid on the turnout build, I made an attempt to investigate on the chairs. As I’m modeling a subway layout, I’m planning to install the most visible parts of the track as they are mounted on a concrete track bed. With wider chair spacing than with ballasted sleeper tracks, the chairs mounted on corresponding concrete blocks and a drain channel in the middle of the track. As I’m modeling in HO I’m curious to know which rail codes from the Scale Four society correspond with either code 83 or code 70 from the HO scale world. Until now I can’t really seem to find an answer. Hence, a humbly request for advice where to submit this question. Thanks in advance. For now Cheerio
Fascinating video, James - as ever!
Looking forward to seeing this miniature masterpiece progress further.
Good to see you again.
Best wishes from Wirral.
Excellent work. The etching the cork and laser cutting the sleepers in blocks is genius.
I feel utterly rotten pointing out anything in your workmanship, but I wonder if a jig might help in ensuring perfect placement of the chairs on the sleepers: some of them looked a quarter of a millimetre off centre! 😀
Well James, I think you may have turned the Model Railway World on its head following this episode, and everyone will be thinking this is how we should be doing it, and wondering where to put a 3D printer and laser cutter, or wishing they had procured them years ago.
This is an episode that will be talked about for years I think, well done, really appreciated.
Thank you @1BCamden. This really is just the logical next step when one has access to a laser cutter. I've cut some quite complex formations now, and it certainly helps to lay things out quickly.
Thanks for watching,
James
James, thanks for sharing, looking forward to some indepth review of the laser cutter in the future maybe.
Another fantastic film James, but the brushing of the pva , I would mask off the parts that don't require glue , then use a foam roller to apply the glue :-)
Thank you Adrian, that's a great suggestion.
All the best,
James
Great stuff James! Perhaps you could explain how you adapt the Templot drawing into sleeper panel files ready for laser cutting.
Hi James, You have amazing dedication to your subject! I have never thought of making all the sleepers to fit the formation and then glue them down. The only thing I would advise is that you get a can of aerosol spray of the type used in gardens to prevent mould and insect attack on roses. I used Cuprinol Garden Shades green to protect the underside of my baseboard. I wondered why the cork ballast had disappeared from my layout, and found insects had eaten it! Thanks for uploading,
I hope the cork will all be covered by ballast, but that is great advice I'd never have thought of, thank you. :)
Layout seems to be coming on now!!! Will be great to see it at an exhibition soon!
There should be significant progress over the next few months - provided I don't get distracted (which is quite likely). :)
All the best,
James
Hi James, it’s been a while since I saw any of your videos, but as of today, I am caught up. What a journey, super detail, you are creating. One question, if you don’t mind? , have you finished Bexhill West station?. I am dying to see this completed. The engine shed you built for Paul, (the artist), I don’t suppose you could sell me the plans so that I could build one for myself, well, look forward to the next video James, till then take care and hope to hear from you regarding the engine shed. 👌🏻
Hi Paul, The station is finished to a point. I'll complete all the final details, weathering etc, once I've got that particular board finished to the same standard. Then I'll be able to complete all the little jobs at the same point.
Re. the engine shed, I don't have plans as such, although I do have all the drawings for laser cutting. I'm sure something could be worked out. Send me an email if you are interested. makeitminiature[at]outlook.com
All the best,
James
Hi James.
Wow... what on Earth possessed you to volunteer for brain damage?
Never seen anything like this. A very innovative project that deserves a high accolade for ingenuity and original thinking.
Excellent work James; 10/10!
Paul. 👍❤️
Thank you Paul, that is very kind of you to say.
Threading the plastic chairs onto the rails is certainly quite brain numbing, although after my first 500 I'd developed quite a good technique such that I barely felt the pain of the second 500. :)
Thanks for watching,
James
Hi James, great video as usual, good use of I assume the laser to pre mark the cork for the sleepers and track position, but I'm curious as I thought you were using steel underframes for a combination of stiffness with a light frame, why switch to the much heavier plywood ?
HI David,
When is was working in OO, all my baseboards were steel framed and I'm pleased I made them that way too. They are still straight and true despite being somewhat abused in storage. However, I have been doing things a little differently with Bexhill West 2.0, but there will be steel underframes which I will come to in a future video.
Thanks for watching,
James
Hi James,
Great video. I also went with just building all the trackwork and points directly onto the baseboard as it just allowed me to get the flow of the trackwork just perfect. Wish I had a way of engraving the plan onto the cork like you did though, that would of made the job alot easier! Did you buy the holder for the butonone from somewhere or did you make it yourself? I only ask because the amount of times I have come close to knocking mine over.. lol Cheers, Michael
I made the bottle holder. I've got several for all my different adhesives/ liquid fluxes etc. as I was forever knocking them over. I thought I might add them to the store as they're quite handy. If you contact me via the contact page on my shop (www.makeitminiature.co.uk) I'll happily send you one as a thank you for all the inspiration I've had from your videos.
All the best,
James
@@BexhillWest Thanks so much! I’ll do just that!
Hi James, I just came across your build ..... wow, looks very interesting. I have it in my head to build something ... may I ask, the kit/tool box of jigs and gauges that you have at 10:30, is this something you put together yourself or purchased from one of the societies? Thanks
Thank you for watching. The little tool tray is something I made to keep all of my track tools organised. It's really handy.
Would it not be a good idea to spray the chairs whilst still on the sprues?
Hi James, absolutely brilliant and meticulous work. Can I ask what laser cutter/printer do you use? Thanks again for great content
Thank you Paul, my machine is a generic Chinese one, 130w 1400x900 bed.
Thanks for watching,
James
Very interesting video James and quite helpful too. I’ve commenced building Phase 2 of my railway and there’s a need for a couple of hand built junctions towards the end of this phase so your guidance is appreciated. And it looks as though I’ll need to invest in a canon ball as I don’t want any of those long weights/waits 🤣
HI Brian, Nice to hear from you. I'll go through it again in more detail next time. When you come to do yours you'd be welcome to borrow my filing jigs etc if they'd be a help.
All the best,
James
@@BexhillWest Thanks James, that’s a very generous offer. I’ll let you know when I get to that point, currently I’m laying the boards for Phase 2 which includes a helix and the control desk. I’ve completed the control desk and will be laying a little more track to get the position of the helix just right before I then tackle the helix itself.
Hi James
Do you produce the butonone cement stand for sale. As I am sick off knocking mine over.
Cheers,
Mark.
