    By far this is the most touching interview of all the series. The last part of his speech when he describes his recovery from cancer did touch my heart. You are a truly real martial art master Mr Jeff Speakman!

    Jeff Speakman is one of the top martial artists in the world and a great person. I am fortunate to have my 11 year old son enrolled at Jeff's Kenpo 5.0 school in Las Vegas and see it firsthand. Jeff and his group of instructors are some of the most talented and personable black belts you will find teaching both adults and children. It is a great environment for people to learn Kenpo and understand the way of being a true martial artist. It is also great how the art has evolved to include various skills for grappling, ground fighting submissions and chokes. Great interview Scott, thanks for so much great content!

    When this movie came out. It made me like Jeff Speakman better than Van Damme as a martial artist. The fights look more realistic and faster than Van Damme's movie's. I still like Van Damme and his movies but I wish Jeff Speakman was able to have more roles and recognition in Holllywood. But that's how Hollywood is. Man this makes me want to go learn Kenpo Karate!!! Thank you Scott for interviewing Mr. Speakman. I missed this guy and I also loved the other movie he did Street Knight. Indeed and it's a shame that Kenpõ like so many other good arts fell into the bad side of "politics and bickering" after the founder passed away, or even sometimes before the founder passed away: such as the split that resulted in the Tracy branch of American Kenpõ, or the various schools of Hapkidõ when it main base founder passed away; or even to a lesser degree when the four main branches of Kajūkenbõ started to evolve and have offshoots of sub methods, that tend to bicker more than work together, or even the various Ninjutsu organizations that tend to keep to themselves rather than working together.

    Sott, first off, as a former US Marine and Immigrant, I have always enjoyed your view points and talks. Such a humble person you are my friend. As a fan of the late 80's and 90's, growing up, Jeff Speakman def brought to the screen a thing of legends. This is def the best interview I have witness from you to honor Jeff and his past. Rest of us from that era only dreamed of being in that world, but being new in America a poor teen, did not know how. So thank you for all that you do. Lastly, my daughter Amaiya Zafar, google her name, I think you will find her boxing dream story interesting. She was the force and the first one to push the envelope and changed the boxing rule inviting women in, who were not allowed before. At 16, she was the first to fight with HIjab and create doors for others. Your channel is refreshing, thank you for doing what you do! We love you my friend.

  • @Nattens767
    @Nattens767 3 роки тому +25

    Wow, what a cracking interview, and proves what an introspective and wise man Jeff is. I admit I haven't kept up with him since the mid 90s when he seemed to vanish, but after having watched this, I now have a deeper respect for him than before after seeing his films. A damn shame about the circumstances within the film industry that could have otherwise made him a huge star which he deserved, and still does. Thing is you can tell he's made peace with that, and considering the real fight he went through, well, a successful career was not on his mind when that was taking place obviously.
    As a lifelong practitioner of martial arts (five formats total), I've met people over the years who are in kenpo, and it's now clear as to why I view it as restrictive because in a traditional sense, it is. Good on Jeff for taking it to the next level which makes absolute sense. Of the five formats I am dedicated to, JKD is the most comprehensive in that it, too, is all about no limits and moving forward which was what Bruce Lee had in mind from the start. That was Ed Parker's wish for kenpo, proving that brilliant minds do think similarly.
    Moreover, I am even more grateful for Jeff in that his view of MMA is what I've thought from the go, making a lucidly clear distinction between as he put it martial arts and martial sports. It can be rather annoying whenever I meet people who once they find out I'm a martial artist assume I'm into MMA which I'm not, and never will be for reasons which should be obvious. For me, martial arts is such an integral part of my life/being, and with it, I've never set myself to limits/boundaries and outmoded rules which do not apply to real life, in combat and otherwise.
    All of this nonsense I've read and heard directly influenced by MMA, again, that may be the meat and potatoes inside an octagon with rules, but outside where there are no rules, it's clearly no longer defined by sport rules, but the lack thereof. Also, from what I've observed, a big percentage of these MMA fighters are motivated by greed and ego - Conor McGregor and others are examples of this, and while that may assuage these individuals for a moment, in the long run, it bears no significance.
    I mean, it's easy to get in that octagon and hurt each other, but like Jeff said, having a long lasting and positive impact on both yourself and others is the true spirit and meaning with martial arts. That being said, Jeff is a great guy and it's wonderful to see how appreciative and respectful he is to Scott who is carving out a place for himself both in martial arts as well as the world.

    I liked two moments particurarly: When he spoke of Maked a Wish fondation and when he spoke of MMA should be called MMF, mixed martial figthing instead of mixed martial arts. I respect those who want to test their skills in MMF, but martials arts still do exist. I remember the humble George saint-Pierre saying he would not take on a fight with some of his martial arts instructors because of their skills and this is the physcal part. Sensei Jeff Speakman added a philosophical meaning to it. Two thumbs up, keep up the good work!

    This is one of the most impressive and heart warming conversation I’ve ever seen from Speakman himself. I’ve done martial arts since I was 6, The Perfect Weapon and movies with Steven Seagal, Van Damme, And many others is what personally inspired me to better myself physically to be prepared for any self defense altercation I ever encountered in my life. And I can personally admit that Kenpo Karate got me out of a few bar fight scenarios more then once. And if it wasn’t for the knowledge that Ed Parker passed on to great men like Jeff Speakman, I wouldn’t of known the many possibilities of extending my techniques. For me Kenpo Karate isn’t just a martial art, it’s a way of life for me. It’s helped keep me sane and stable during hard moments in my life and I wouldn’t know where I’d be without it. Great interview Mr.Atkins, Cheers. In the words of Ed Parker, “To Hear, is to Doubt. To See, is to be Deceived, But to Feel is to Believe” ~Salute~

    Great interview! Touching heartfelt words from Jeff Speakman - a true martial artist. 'The Perfect Weapon' is easily one of the best American martial arts movies and it captured the spirit of martial arts showing him growing up and learning, etc. Maybe in the future Scott can do a movie project similar to The Expendables but all martial artists and lots of fights!

I'm all choked up about his fight with cancer (lost my dad to stomach cancer in 2018) and so sad that his career didn't go further. Definitely one of the best in the arts and would have loved to see him do so much more. Have a great deal of respect for him what he does and represents. What a legend and a all-round great guy. Absolutely outstanding interview Scott, and once again you have outdone yourself with your brilliant series! I was also "teary-eyed" after Mr. Speakman's moving speech, and he has always been such an invaluable contributor to the martial arts world, as well as to action cinema with "Perfect Weapon", as one of the best martial arts action movies ever made. It is so sad that he was unable to continue his movie career, but his incredible prowess in martial arts fortunately continues in his worldwide teachings of American Kenpo Karate. And Scott, I just want to add that not only have you already given the world Yuri Boyka (and a lot of other GREAT action movies), but with each episode of "The Art of Action", you truely continue to make the world a better place. Thanks so much for all that you continue to share and inspire.
