  • As you have seen previously, we have found a leak in the intercooler. What are the gains after its replacement?

The only difference is how long the turbo will last. If the intercooler cant maintain the pressure that the turbo pumps, then the turbo just have to overcompensate. So the gain is to make it easier for the turbo. Mine is leaking now, and my new shitty autoparts spare broke, it swelled up and cracked so I had to put the stock one back with the smaller hole. The car sounds like a gas turbine bus.

Good videos as always. You need to mention/remember that with the leak the turbo will work harder to make the same target and as such it will heat up more and be less efficient. You won’t see that on the dyno pulls but on track you won’t lose as much as before because the turbo won’t over-work and the intercooler won’t heat soak as much. So it’s about what you’re now not losing because you fixed it, not what you could gain.

I think the main reason it is down on power and torque is the mileage this thing did before it got to Misha, not only engine wise, transmission, differential and just about everything in the drivetrain will suck power after 250k km.

Notice that the new intercooler only has 12 rows, whereas the old one had 13 rows. So it won't be as good as OE. Learned to pay attention to such details the hard way :(

My mechanic didn't put anything back right after a serpentine belt change. One issue is they didn't bolt the intercooler back on with the two bolts at the top, one of the bolts is still there. I can't get it to go into the threaded metal holes and it's a standard bolt, but online I've found it's supposed to have a taper, is that right? Can it be done with the standard bolt? Thanks.
Update: I found the bolt at the hardware store: M6x30 1.00. The one in there was an M8. Fucking idiots.

I am pretty sure that the power figures are the same because even though there was a boost leak, the engine was getting the same amount of air, ie the turbocharger was working harder to achieve the same boost. I think that a slight difference in response and lag is expected after the installation of the new intercooler.

Your turbo just work harder to compensate lost of pressure. MAP sensor send signal to ecu about pressure inside manifold, and if there is not enough, it just compensates with more boost from turbo. It means your turbo has a lot of free headroom for chip tuning also :) But main goal why manufacturers leave this headroom is expecially due boost leaks and comfortable driving if that happen, it prolongs engines, catalytics and etc :) Now imagine you chip tuned your car, allowing all potential from ur turbo to engine and then boost leak... Then ur engine stalling, vibrating, pulsating, you getting limp mode etc, because there are no more headroom lefted to compensate... The car trying to trim fuel, but fuel supply only can be delivered at real time measurments from sensors, so there is a big delay and car ecu cant store information to its memory :)

You will probably get more consistent power over a lap. Having that intercooler fixed might not be that much difference once on a dyno, but hopefully you'll be able to tell while lapping, that the power has not fell off. Maybe a mph, (kmh) or two down the stretches?

Only just watching this in 22 and have same issue on my Bora of leaking intercooler, noticed ducting was rubbing through IC so cut it down but the main leak was on the bottom from joint betweem the core end plate and crimped joint. Fixed seam with metal putty for now and is way quiter, next up cleaning out the carbon from 160k miles :(.

So to be clear. When you found a problem in the car you go to a shop a fix it? Nah! which planet you live at? :P
In Argentina, still in lockdown for 5 months, I got my bike park outside. Collecting dust and flat tires... easier to sell xD

The TDi turbo is very under stressed as standard and has lots of capacity, that’s why your boost leak didn’t effect the power output, it should improve lag and throttle response on track though.
