The major philosophical conundrum with Batman's no-kill rule is everyone (in real life or the comics) asking "why do you let someone like the Joker live?" But, as Kris explained very well, Batman refuses to cross that life - no matter how bad he wants or close he may get. Now reverse it. If Batman does kill - why is the Joker still alive? Why would any of his rogues still be alive? Zack talks like the only Batman comic he's ever read is The Dark Knight Returns
Personally I think Batman having a no-kill rule makes things interesting because it sets him at a disadvantage against his opponents who don't have this restriction and makes him have to find alternative ways of dealing with them. I guess a good writer can create interesting versions of both approaches, though. And obviously having a no-kill rule has never applied to random goons that become collateral damage, let's be real XD we are only talking main villains here, in these fictional scenarios.
I don't remember that, is there a time stamp for that? I mean I'll listen to it again, but there were so many interesting topics idk why this is the only thing ppl are focused about. It's crazy too cuz so many ppl are talking about it without even listening to that podcast at all
I just re watched the episode. Snyder never called Batman boring ,proof please, if anything the whole episode was about love, and even how his fans donated money to suicide prevention. I'm in the twilight zone.
Batman killing is as jarring as if Superman is a f*** boy instead of a Boy Scout. He took one of the most intrinsic, foundation value that the hero attempts to keep, and just tossed it out the window. Batman’s code against killing is comparable to Daredevil, but its no surprise that Netflix’s Daredevil is better received, the hero faced darker villains than Snyders Batman, yet still refuses to kill.
Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams were both BORN in the same hospital in London. However, Ryan Gosling was raised in Cornwall Ontario and some in Burlington, Ontario due to his father's work. Rachel McAdams grew up in St Thomas, which is not far from London.
my "Batman moral code" take: the moral code is necessary for the Batman story but it doesn't mean there can't ever be an instance where someone dies because of Batman. I just think there needs to be weight to such an instanceand we need to see why it had to happen the way it did, and especially how Batman grapples with it and what are the potential consequences.
The whole reason Batman refuses to kill, is that it opens the possibility for killing in the future (there will always going to be situations that seems dire in comics where killing might be the easier option). And yet in Snyders films, the Batman has already crossed the line and become accustomed to killing. It doesn’t feel as earned as Superman’s kill in Man of Steel
on the batman killing people thing..... i am all for Batman having the "moral high-ground" but the no killing thing only really works in a world where the super villains don't escape prison every five minutes, because if you don't kill the enemy the first time and he gets out of prison and continues to go on a murder spree its not the heroes fault, because he put that villain away, but if he captures the villain again and the cycle continues at what point is it the Heroes fault that more people died because he did not end the villain when he had the chance
i don’t get why people can’t understand this, don’t ever tell me Batman respects the sanctity of life above all else when he’s letting mass murders escape 5x a year and they go on killing sprees.
It's so sad that after couple of people payed their last homage to Akira Toriyama in the show, John Campea's behind the screen crew (or even John Campea himself) decided to delete or skipped every message related to Akira Toriyama passing away. Is it just because John is not fan of anime or Dragon Ball??!!
If Batman didn't have the code it's only logical that the Joker would be dead. Superman having to kill Zod in Man of Steel shouldn't have surprised anyone - he had already let Pa Kent die - that would never have happened in the comics.
Kris is missing something with the whole Batman discussion. Killing someone and murder is two different things. One could even ask a question how many people has Batman Let Die by not killing the Joker.
There is never an impossible position, just lazy writers. Be brilliant enough to come up with a way for Superman not to kill Zod. All of Supes attributes and you can't figure out a way for him to not kill. That's what makes him Superman.
The reason why people love Batman is because he's a hero that protect lives. When he was a kid in many stories across all DC media, his parents was killed in an alley while he witnessed it all. The reason why Bruce became Batman was to protect people from getting hurt the same way he been through for his whole life. He doesn't want to kill people because he doesn't want to be the same murderer as the guy who murdered his parents. Zack Snyder's version of Batman is so wrong. In BVS, he murdered criminals. I love it when Batman beats the living sh*t out of criminals don't get me wrong, but he isn't supposed to be this killing rampage machine. He also killed a guy with a gun, do you now know what is my point here? This is not Batman who we know and love.
he loves life and wants to protect people… so he captures the Joker, lets the Joker live, and the Joker kills 100s of more innocents, over and over again. no character should ever be limited to “never killing” because even in the rarest of moments anyone might have to kill.
you believe that Batman “holds the sanctity of life above all else”… yet he lets 100s of innocents die every time Joker escapes? and Joker keeps escaping and keeps killing innocents. if he cared about life, he’d end Joker’s. it’s a badly written rule, as John said.
A greater cinematic mind in Christopher Nolan knew the line that Batman couldn't allow himself to be an executioner was what made batman not just a person that is a vigilante figure but a True Hero and legend that becomes a symbol to imitate. It's about the one rule that makes him more idolized than a character of the punisher.
That entire rogan podcast with zack was excellent. And I keep seeing these out of context and bias quotes from zack about this topic. It just highlights how tone deaf people covering this entire DCEU snyderverse are. I'm glad it's over because as much as I love it, I'm sick of people getting it wrong.. even when the creator is point blank trying to explain it to people to dim to get it. If you don't test heroes in impossible situations, what's the point.. people love realism in batman until they feel it goes "too far" batman kills.. he doesn't murder. There's a big big difference. And snyder isn't the outlier of this, he just had the balls to say it, film it and lean into it and it's his batman that felt was pulled right out of some of the best comics into film. I don't want captain America in a batcowl. That's boring.. nor do I want punisher in a bat cowl. But he is lethal. His tech can be lethal. His approach to stopping crime and scaring crime IS VIOLENT and potentially lethal. It's like a murderer coming at a cop with a weapon intent on killing them and the cop shoots him in the head and puts him down and everyone cries, "you were supposed to be better than the criminals, how dare you!! You could have shot him anywhere else to stop him" and while that might be a thing, it was a hard forced choice. A man that will kill another person premeditated doesn't really need to bare sympathy.. especially from a fictional character who sets out to stop them. I've always taken issue with people hating on zacks films simply because it's popular to do.. and then hide behind comics they don't read and derails they don't scrutinize with other films of the same character.
I don’t understand the debate over Batman killing or not in movies. Does he have to say how many people he killed? Is there going to be a kill count on the screen? Is there going to be a tally at the end of the movie? Do the deaths being less or more obvious make the movie better? I for one don’t care. 🤷♂️
Batman smashing someone's face and him staying alive is ok with me...he lives in a fictional world...if the writers say the guy is alive then he's alive... SPIDERMAN is insanely powerful if he punches a regular thug he should and will die but if the writers say he's pulling his punches and they are alive then they are alive BATMAN DOESN'T LIVE IN THE REAL WORLD...if Batman is ok with killing then you can't justify the existence of his greatest enemy JOKER and the story will be over in a minute with a bullet inside joker's head
Precisely. Batman may occasionally be responsible for manslaughter, but not murder. He will not intentionally kill someone, and that is true of other heroes as well. If Batman starts killing, what's to stop superman from doing the same?
But Snyder thinks Batman can just kill willy nilly. Batman should only kill/potentially kill if its to save an innocent and he has absolutely no other choice. This is also why Batman is always so prepared.
While I agree with most of what's said about the no killing rule, but I am astounded that people will crucify Snyder for ignoring this rule while praising Burton's Batman who was just as blatant about ignoring this rule. Keaton literally sends the Batmobile into a warehouse full of thugs and drops a bomb destroying the warehouse and everyone inside. Not to mention burning someone alive with the exhaust flame, and attaching a bomb to another while giving a wicked smile. Only two Batman to grave the big screen have not killed so far, George Clooney and Robert Pattinson. While I love the no killing rule, it has never been a make or break for any movie prior.

I agree with many of your points, however I really like what Coy and Winston and Kristian had to say about how this has manifested in the movies. It didn't feel like we got a chance to *explore* this idea like he is saying in this quote when we see the examples in the DCEU. While we did put Superman in an impossible situation where he had to make that choice, it is hard to feel like you are establishing an exception to a rule when it is so early in our experience with this character. It is possible if you are able to follow up with depictions showing him then not take life when he can, or continuing to feel grief over the choice he was forced to make, and we didn't get that opportunity because we didn't get much follow-up to MoS (not really the fault of MoS itself, but still means that the takeaway from the whole DCEU experience didn't feel like it worked as well as it could or should have). And for Batman, we didn't really get to see him struggle with that, or again, even get the sense that he *usually* wouldn't have killed, or that he does now because of how broken he was from the past or anything. There may have been hints at that, but if you're talking about the meaty storytelling opportunities in exploring that, it needs to be a little more present in the end project, IMO
I heard their conversation, and what tripped me out is that neither coy, Winston or kristian actually listened to the actual podcast in its entirety. Interesting you say that because those rules are just about diversity and have really really low bars to hit. Like, you would have to exclude people on purpose not to hit them. To call that anti-creativity is ... weird because it's literally not related. If anything, having a more diverse range of people on set allows for more creativity because it offers more perspectives.
well, that might be true, if you do a movie where the story is about different places cultures, and then diversity of the people working for you is + thing. but in "simple" setting where you dont need any cultural input, the race/culture is irrelevant, and them people should be hired for their merit not cos what social box they check. @@Phelie315

People hate Zack Snyder because they know how good he is in Comic book movie. We don't need CW flash actor in new DCU if you do than we need Henry Cavill superman in DCU
