Thank you, as a single woman with no access to male knowledge live and in person these videos are a godsend. I find with so many traditionally male oriented things, even in instructions a basic understanding is expected, and I find that very frustrating. Wonderful video, I'm off to use my straps thank you again.

I just bought my first pair and didn't know what to do with it either haha. Didn't come with any instructions so I guess they all just assume people know what to do with them hahaha

    Thanks for great video.
Couple things I hope help others:
1 - Place your straps so you can see them, or leave enough of a tail that you can see it fluttering in your mirrors as you drive. If you dont see the strap/tail where you used to = STOP and CHECK. If thats not possible, get some reflective safety tape and tie it to your straps as indicators.
2 - Put the ratchet on the OUTER traffic side (usually Right/passenger side in North America) of the vehicle/trailer. When you need to check your ratchets you will be on the non-traffic side of the vehicle.
3 - Check your load after driving a few miles/kilometers and re-tighten. Loads shift and settle. NEVER assume.
4 - Get loading/cargo lights that face rearward so you can check in your mirrors when its dark.
    Stay gold.

Five years later, this video is still heaven sent!
I totally destroyed two rachet straps, trying to secure a ramp, crate, and stroller for my dog, in the cargo area of my 06 Honda Element.
Car has the room, and has built in brackets to attach hooks to, but the one thing missing was my understanding of how to work a rachet strap!!
Thanks to you, Joe, I finally know how to use these straps!
Luckily, I have two more straps which I haven't destroyed, and now I get how these work, so my senior dog says "Thank you!" Now we can still go on little adventures!!
PS even the engineers I know couldn't explain this as clearly as you did!

Tip: When using them on the road, give the long part over the load a twist or two before feeding into the ratchet and tightening up.

I was having the issue of too much wrapped on the take up reel because I just fed the end around until it grabbed to itself thus wrapping the entire length of strap onto the take up reel and now cannot release the mechanism. This explained the proper method for using these tie downs. Thank you very much for a very clear demonstration.

This video was definitely a big help, because this is the first time I started using ratchet tie down straps as a alternative to using bungee cords, because I really hate using rope to tie and secure my load, but unfortunately overtime my bungee cables started to fail, but rather than using rope I rather use ratchet tie-down instead, because in my personal opinion using rope as a tie-down is a bit outdated and inconvenient, this video really helped me a lot.

Thanks for the video. Just an observation, and to share with others, you do not have to pull on both releases in order to make the strap release from ratchet. You can simply pull the main "Release" tab all the way down/opened position and the ratchet teeth won't engage with other side, but the key is to open apart the ratchet mechanism ALL THE WAY, to where the mechanism is at a complete 180 degree angle.

You are the only one that taught be how to hook the two hooks properly. Thanks

    • @millomweb
      @millomweb 5 років тому

It's not a case of 'properly' - just hook to hook is 'properly' but the extra looping shown here is interesting but may not work on different makes of strap - depends if the hook designs are the same or not.
