I am preparing to craft my first cabinet doors, and now--thanks to this presentation--I am ready to begin, beginning with ordering partial overlay hinges.
There's a certain level of knowledge that usually only comes with experience and time spent in woodworking. These are all things that aren't taught in woodworking classes any longer, the tricks of the trade so to speak. I have been looking for a channel that conveys this kind of teaching for a long time now, only just discovered Workshop Companion and boy am I glad that I have. Unbeatable! The young kids on the block are all fine and good with their fancy dominos and cnc's, I enjoy that too, but nothing beats an old boy's knowledge and expertise!

Great tutorial and refresher.....thanks! I've installed a lot of Blum hinges but must admit when I first began they were intimidating. Love how they are adjustable and totally concealed when doors are closed though. Really enjoyed seeing Bella doing more "acting" in this video......she's such a beautiful dog. I'm sure she gives you endless pleasure with all her antics!

Hello, I just stumbled across your channel. I'm a retired cabinetmaker and have installed thousands of these hinges. I have a tip that will make this even easier. I like to work from "the center of my door" for laying out hinges and plates. Say I have a 30" door by making a mark at 15" I now can work from there giving me dead center of the cup location. I now take the center of the opening and repeat the process giving me accurate location for my hinge plates. Also if you have a door that is over 60" manufacture recommends 3 hinges. I would leave the hinge plate off the cabinet in the middle until after the door is clipped in place then install the third plate, less frustration on you.
Thanks for sharing. I usually make a story stick for each set of cabinets I design, since most of the openings tend to be the same height. But this works just as well without having to wonder where you put the dang stick.

I work in a cabinet shop. We use these hinges daily. Great explanation!! Only thing I would suggest is leave a 1/8” gap between double doors. Expansion through the seasons will cause problems if you don’t!!
Low under counter door got loose and popped off after 15 years. Was an awkward position so I couldn't figure out if I had to slide and lock or press and lock or what. All I know, it took like 15 tries and my arms were coming off. Found this channel, and within 5 minutes, I got it back together. Thank you!!

This is my first time watching one of your videos, and you have a new subscriber from it. I appreciate the simple explanations without being condescending, the bits of humor thrown in, and the inclusion of both metric and customary units. Also, Bella is the second goodest companion (my dog, Princess, is obviously the goodest companion).
I work with these hinges every day, so I know all the measurements off the top of my head. They're super easy. We even have the cup hinges for the doors that don't need any screws. It's called blum clip-top inserta. Just drill a 35mm hole for the cup, and two 8mm holes for where the screws would go and it clicks right in place.
I have never like installing or trying to adjust those type of hinges. After watching this video several times over, I'm tempted to give them another try. Thank you for this video, seems well explained.
Thank you for another wonderful video About a year ago, I bought 12ish pairs of concealed hinges (1 product code QTY:12) for a kitchen and somehow got 3 diffrent types of hinge! It would be nice if the stockist put as much thought into their products as you just did :)
Concealed hinges are a constant source of frustration because you can't tell what they're for simply by looking at them. There are six pivot points! Who can look at that and mentally imagine where the door is going to end up when it's open or closed? Consequently, it's extremely easy to put them in the wrong stock bin. Or grab them out of the wrong stock bin. Or put them in the wrong package altogether. I have gotten into the habit of comparing the hinges to the their photo in the catalogue when they arrive.
A good simple explanation is very welcome. The Blum hinge catalogue and technical manual runs to over 700 pages and has tables and graphs that are enough to inhibit many from even considering using one. I should say that many of the jigs for these hinges put the pilots for the screws in the wrong place so piloting using the actual hinges is the best bet.
Agreed on both accounts. Agreed that the Blum Catalogue is a fantastic door stop. And agreed that commercial jigs cannot be trusted. I know of at least one case in which a company apparently changed their hinge design, moving the screw locations, but the old templates (made by another party) continued to be sold. When I make my own, I always consult the company's published dimensions, and then check the numbers against the actual hinges I've been sent.

I don't know what kind of hinges exist now and how to best consider each hinge's weight bearing capabilities. It's absolutely astounding how many types of European hinges there are available, and more coming with each new round of catalogues. Mr. Europe is a very busy man.
I have 8 cabinet doors to install, I did find a relatively inexpensive jig that looked promising, yeah the circular ring that the Foster bit attaches to wobbles on the base unit, that clamps to the door. From a big name woodworking store. I found another a bit more expensive, but it also has holes to pre drill for the cup side screws on it. Makes it very easy to set up and repeat. I agree about the hinges, what no info on the plastic package or info inside, argh 🤐. I was able to learn how to determine if the hinges are 5mm or something else. I will look again for tech specs for the mounting for inside the cabinet, I have frameless cabinets with a full overlay. This will be Wednesdays let’s try this out on 1 door first if all goes well, 7 more to work through.

My experience is mostly with pre-installed hinges, although I've had to replace plenty of them. I agree that blue language is part of the process.

If only this had been out two weeks ago, would have saved me a few trips to the hardware store, didn't realise there were so many types, sizes and angles of cabinet hinges 😂
It's absolutely astounding how many types of European hinges there are available, and more coming with each new round of catalogues. Mr. Europe is a very busy man.
I have 8 cabinet doors to install, I did find a relatively inexpensive jig that looked promising, yeah the circular ring that the Foster bit attaches to wobbles on the base unit, that clamps to the door. From a big name woodworking store. I found another a bit more expensive, but it also has holes to pre drill for the cup side screws on it. Makes it very easy to set up and repeat.
I agree about the hinges, what no info on the plastic package or info inside, argh 🤐. I was able to learn how to determine if the hinges are 5mm or something else. I will look again for tech specs for the mounting for inside the cabinet, I have frameless cabinets with a full overlay.
This will be Wednesdays let’s try this out on 1 door first if all goes well, 7 more to work through.
