- Hi everyone!
Welcome to another video.
In this one I'm showing you all the processes to fit a full overlay concealed hinge. This hinge is the most commonly used hinge.
I run through all the measurements you need and do a demo from start to finish.
It's really easy, why not give it a go!

Nice video Ryan, my only comment would be that 99% of the time, you’d fit a door after the cabinet is built without the luxury of having the pieces lying side by side. Would have been better to see this. How much adjustment are there in the hinges?
It's all I had in the workshop at the time 👍
His question is So how do you measure them with the cabinet in place and door on the work bench ?
what mdf do you use? Is it MR or regular?? Is it a certain brand or is it all much of a muchness? I'm about to build my first cabinets. and have been binge watching your channel for tips hennce some of my. stoopid questions. Thanks for sharing your expertise.
Hi mainly standard tbh.
I get mine from Lords buillders merchants and their supplpier is pretty good. Its not like the stuff you get from b & q or wickes, its very dense and is very resistant to raising when painting :-)
Thank you for the support btw, its very much appreciated!
Cheers Ryan
Hello,
I've been binge watching your videos as my sis wants me to have a go of making her an alcove wardrobe, so thanks for all the information you upload.
Regarding concealed hinges and the faker shaker style doors, are your doors 18mm MDF with a 6mm overlay, or 12mm with 6mm overlay. If 12mm, are there any problems caused when drilling the 35mm hinge hole? If 18mm, what hinges do you use to accomodate the 24mm total thickness?
8:39 where do I get one of those little squares?
www.banggood.com/custlink/mDD8czvkKT
Hi Ryan, could you please give me some advice. Your vids have helped me build my first large wardrobe/storage unit for our 2nd bedroom, all the carcasses are built and fitted and panel doors are made. I’m now about to fit GTV overlay hinges to the doors and plan to fit the doors to the units using the method you used on a previous video where you offer up the doors then screw on the mounting plate.
My question is - You said you centre the 2 adjustment screws, is this still the case when using the 6mm packer between the door edge and carcass side? Sorry this is a bit long winded but as it’s my first attempt I want to get fit right, thanks again!
Hi Barry, we usuall wind one of the grub screw all the way out, so the plate and the hinge are squashed together as much as possible.
This is the grass screw closest to the cup if the hinge.
Then the locking grub screw we centre.
Just be sure to check the door edge as you are closing the door, look at the edge against the carcass/door next to it, before you commit to closing the door.
It'll be most likely that you need to adjust the first grub back out. (The one near the cup)
Use a screw driver when doing fine adjustments so you can count the turns and get each hinge the same.
I hope this helps 👍👍👍
@@thelondoncraftsmanworkshop thank you Ryan, appreciate your help mate 👍
@BarrrySpiers no probs mate 👍👍
@@thelondoncraftsmanworkshop 6 doors fitted! I used a 3mm spacer instead of 6mm and it worked out great. Love the GTV hinges, can’t believe how cheap they are.
@BarrrySpiers we used to use 3mm spacers but found we were adjusting out more than the 6mms. Both work though.
Yes thay are great value for such a good hinge!!! 👍👍👍
Excellent video mate! I finally feel sure of myself to go install some of these bloody hinges 🙂
Glad to see new generations in the UK are regularly using metric system now
Thank you...
And I'm glad they helped ☺️
Is it standard for all kinds of kitchen hinges including the Chinese one ?
Yes they all should have the same principle 👍
@@thelondoncraftsmanworkshop thank you so much sir
@justadesigner6864 you're welcome
Hi, I just started making some bedroom cabinets, I've bought a simple jig but now I'm confused about the hinges I need as there is so much choice on length's of products.... does the same jig fit most lengths?
Well explained, but when the casing is already up, and you need to then fit the doors, it must be more difficult to measure.Rather than on a small piece on a flat surface.
Comprehensive and straightforward, keeping this one for future reference, ta!
That's great 👍👍👍
Hi ryan ,say for example you make a 600mm by 600mm mdf cabinet would you just take off 3mm from each side of the door or is there a specific size your door has to be smaller than the unit.?
Hi Marty sorry for the delay!
Well if there is no panel or other door going either side of 'said' door, then no gap is needed on the sides.
If it was one door sitting over/in front of a carass and the trims were stepped back (flush with carcass) then the door would be the same width as the carcass.
Hopefully I understood your question correctly.
cheers
Ryan
Sorted thank you 👍
You're welcome 😊
This is very helpful, I wasn’t sure about the spacing on these concealed hinges however this is very simple and straight forward, thank you
Thank you!
can you please tell me where you got that square marking guide from
Thank you
Hi these arnet the exact ones but this is where I got them from
www.banggood.com/custlink/DDKZ3fOekQ
Good tutorial. I need to replace a Grass brand hinge that keeps unclipping. Looking at the catalogue is so confusing with all the different measurements. It seems like there is no direct replacement, so I hope they are somewhat compatible.
As long as you use the same type as you have, you should be able to use another brand or a newer type grass hinge.
If in doubt, change all the hinges on that door, so they work in sync with each other, this should eliminate any doubt 👍
Hello Ryan. Well done. Do you have a link for the little red marking square you used for the 37mm line on the frame?
Hi sorry for the late reply, did you manage to find it?
@@thelondoncraftsmanworkshop I did thanks, on Amazon
Could you share a link as I would quite like to get one as well
is it always 100mm from edges of the door no matter what size the door is?? Eg. big or small
Well the top and bottom hing I always do 100mm, then divide up the rest equally.
I full size door say 2400mm x 600mm would generally have 4 hinges, or 5 if you wanted to be sure to be sure...cheers Ryan
How do you know the distance from the edge ,, you are setting at 4 mm ...do different hinges req different distances ? How do you know ? Cheers
Can someone answer this question pls 🙏
Well when you buy hinges such as blum or hafele brands, they can come with different thickness mounting plates (the part that gets fixed to the carcass , not door). So there are variations according to what door gaps you are looking to achieve.
My general rule of thumb for the hinges I use(although they don't come with instructions) is a 4mm gap from the edge of thr door to the start of the 35mm Diameter hinge hole.
This is what I usually start with and to be fair, 99% of the time is good for all 35mm hinges.
You can always look up the specs of the hinge that you are using online, I'm sure you would find that measurement.
Ryan
Hi Ryan, recently found your channel as im about to embark on the wardrobes and cabinets for our home renovation. You have gave me yhe confidence and information i think to allow me to do a pretty good job. I must ask where you got your square with the holes from?
Thanks again buddy
Apologies, I think I got this one from amazon, I like the fact they have the holes in 1mm increments.
I cant find the exact one but type in woodworking square and you should find one similar 👍
And good luck by the way, I'm glad the vids can be of some use 😊
How do you know if you need 3mm,4mm,5mm or 6mm? And how did you know it was 37mm high on the frame?
Hi I just worked it out, the 6mm works for me, 3mm is a little too tight.
Close the hinge and place the door against frame along with a 3mm gap in between. That should give 37mm (if the hinge has been adjusted to centre)
👍
@thelondoncraftsman2026 just want to say thanks for making the video and kindly responding. Super appreciated.
Great but marking is a bit trickier when the cabinet is already built.
It is a bit trickier, but doable with the right technique :-)
Hi,
I’ve got the same cutter after watching your videos…I’ve noticed you don’t twist lock your cutting guide into place. Not sure if you know that or not but it helps reduce any play.
Thanks for the vids…they really help me out!
Hi, I didnt know you could do that. I looked at it and I can't see how that works, maybe it's a different model?
Morning Ryan, another good video thanks. I am going to try using the same make hinge as what you do. I have been fitting these hinges for many years. I have a Kreg jig that does the job ok. Before that I made my own jig as you do. The problem I have is buying these hinges, some makes you buy the back plate separately to the hinge. I find it can get quite confusing, yes I know it’s me. However a refresher on the subject is always handy. Thanks again. Take care.
Hi Jerry, sorry for the late reply
Thank you!
I know what you mean.
I like these hinges and they come as a whole(
(Hinge and plate and covers) .
I also like the large amount of adjustment in them too.
I have the kreg, but when I got the veiko jig I stopped using it.
Cheers ryan
@@thelondoncraftsmanworkshop No worries. Thanks for your reply. Business must come first.
You're welcome, yes it's a bit busy atm.
I hope you are well!
Cheers 👍
how are you getting the 37mm #, from edge, for the placement of the baseplates?
I close the hinge, make it square, and measure from the centre of the fixing holes to where the door would start 👍
hi ryan, i was wondering if you predrilled holes into the face of the frame and if not why not? I am a beginner
Hi, I generally don't predrill them, it gives the screws a better bite.
They can be prefilled but only a small amount and with a 2 mm drill bit. But it's not essential
how do you know from the edge of the door carcass that it's 37mm? or are they all that?
Most of them are like that.
You can put hibg on door, then put door up against carcass at a 90 degree to it, close the hinge so the plate part is touching the carcass and then measure from the front of carcass to centre of fixing holes.
Make sure you put 3mm spacer in between door and carcass and that your plate on the hinge has been adjusted to center.
cheers legend!
@@thelondoncraftsmanworkshop
What size are the hinges , I get confused with the sizes advertised 64, 110, 115 etc
Most common are 110 degrees, these are also 110 👍👍
Nice video - thank you. Why did you set the hinge at 4mm? Would this depend on the thickness of the carcass material?
great video man, thank you!
Great! You're welcome
If door heights 1000mm(h) x 300mm(w) how many hinges need it?
2 will easily do the trick. But 3 if you want to, but not needed though.
@@thelondoncraftsmanworkshop thanks Mate
You're welcome 👍
Great video mate, i have the same jig and amazingly after a while the 2mm hole guide no longer line up, so its funny you mentioned it 😅
Thank you mate!
Yes it's strange isn't it unless gtv have changed the spacings?
@@thelondoncraftsmanworkshop i only use Blum so not sure what has gone wrong 🙂
Yep who knows 🤣🤣 maybe can predrill new holes in that part of the jig 🤔
Invaluable information. Thank you sir
Thank you very much!!!
I appreciate it ☺️👍
Cheers Ryan
another great video - just a side note , there is a difference between an awl and bradawl , in the tip , i have both - the bradawl should have a chisel type flattened end. I used to always have bradawl, only recently got my self a couple of awls
I collect awls
Haha yes, I know that now 🤣 I called it a bradawl for years lol
Great watch pal 👍 🔨
Brilliant video Ryan, you help us diyers with our home projects, passing on your experiance and knowledge, thanks a lot.
Thank you!
I'm happy it's helping!
Thanks Ryan
Doing great thanks how are you?
Hello mate I'm good thanks!
When are starting your channel?
@@thelondoncraftsmanworkshop yeah I need to upload some more videos. I cleared my garage but now it's messy again lol
Hi Ryan - where do you buy the GTV hardware from? Thanks 👍🏻
Hi I have put a link in the description just now for you :-)
What tool did you use to get the precise depth of the plate?
Im not really sure I understand the question
£37 for one hinge!
How do you mean, should be around £1.5 -£2 a hinge
Its for 30 hinges
Thanks, good lesson
Thanks 😁
How do you fit 22mm doors to be overlay?
Same technique, just make sure the hiniges you use allow for doors thicker than 18mm
Very helpful tutorial on full overlay hinge installation
Thank you!
I'm glad it helped 😊
Ryan
Do you have a link to the hinges??😊
Oh yes I forgot to add the link. I'll put up and let you know asap 👍
