According to a 2023 article, hiring 300 Immigration Judges (IJs) likely won't fully clear the backlog in 10 years. The article also states that 700 more IJs would be needed to clear the backlog by 2032.
Shouldn't we wonder what happened south of the border beginning in 2017 that caused a 20% increase in US border incursions in 2018 and a *100% increase in 2019 over any other year since 2007* .

This move by the GOP allows their voters to complain about the border situation until the election, giving tremendous help to Trump. No one will look at the details that thereby the GOP would have hindered the closing of the border. Then Trump will close the border properly and America will be safe.

Normally, the budget has a few discretionary funds, which the President can spend for specific purposes without asking the Congress. Last years budget has not been even brought to a vote; all discretionary money have long gone. The Congress is only giving the exec a trickle every month to keep government open and pay employees on time. Back when America wasn't in the grasp of a demagogue populist and wannabe dictator, and reps had a responsibility to their constituents. There were, of course, battles in Congress over attaching entirely unrelated issues to the yearly budget bill (the practice of “omnibus bills”), but a compromise could always be reached, it was a common goal. But the MAGA Congress refuses to even bring the budget bill to the floor. What seems surprising is that the Republican majority in the Congress, and it would take only three Rs to vote with all Ds to oust Johnson. And there are a lot of Rs literally fuming outside the House about the situation. But they are so scared of Trump that even this can't happen. When he promises that he'll be a dictator from the day one and turn DOJ into a kind of Stalin's NKVD who'll eliminate whomever he deems an enemy of his state, I fully believe him; it's not just rhetoric. He's well-connected with the covert web of political fixers. Trump's long time lawyer and friend was Roy Cohn, the famous New York fixer. He was the Joseph McCarthy's (of McCarthyism infamy) leading lawyer in his “holy fight” until it was exposed as a sham at the famous Army v. McCarthy Senate hearing and brought McCarthy down (today the question “do you have any decency?” wouldn't, not a chance: “decency” has become a word without meaning, and patently lying daily for 7 years in a row or boasting about grabbing women by the p***y won't make a single public eye blink). Among Cohn's clients were not only all New York Mob families, but also Trump, whom he called his “best friend,” and the Reagan campaign. Reagan not only made him the CIA Director to return the favors, but also promoted the role to Cabinet-level, which neither has ever been before nor was after the Reagan's presidency. Later he would become involved into the Iran-Contra illegal weapon sales scandal. He wasn't among the convicted, but was indeed aware of the deal: the Special Counsel found some, but not enough evidence for the conviction. At least two highest-ranking CIA officials were among the indicted or convicted, but the professional fixer of course knew better how to leave no trail. He confessed on his deathbed in the hospital to Bob Woodward that he was aware of the whole operation. His wife, not present at the interview, went on to deny that he did after his death. He was unable to speak or write, only nod yes or no. Did she learn of it by clairvoyance? I have no idea.
Some of these guys are thoroughly dead, but the shadow web of political fixers is hasn't gone anywhere. It's fair to say that Cohn helped Trump to presidency from his grave. Democracy is in decline in the West, not only in the US. Human's desire for power may be innate; many simian species' social structure is built around constant struggle for power. Only humans have a unique ability to control these impulses, and this in large part made us by far the most successful species in the whole history of Earth's life. The population of 8 billion for the species of a large animal is an insane number. But we didn't evolve to live in countries of millions. There are enough sociopaths who don't-can't, in fact-understand morality, empathy or social norms. Centers of power, overt or covert, naturally attract them, and however much power they wield, they're longing for more. The very success of our species had doomed us to live from one horrendous war to another. We're trembling in terror seeing the atrocities we have done, build a feeble semblance of a civilized society, which keeps peace for as long as the memory of the blood, death, disease and hunger lives: give or take, 3 generations; then rinse and repeat. Another option is North Korea or Stalin's USSR: it's psychologically impossible to live every moment in fear for one's life. People rationalize the fear of one's life _taken away_ by the monster for no apparent reason into a true gratitude and genuine love of him as an omnipotent being who _gives_ them life and justly punishes only awful people. This path is even worse than the cycle of world wars and decades of peace, as it's a one-way street: unlike the unpleasant and easily suppressed real memory of the atrocities of war, the false memory of blissful living under protection of the benevolent Big Brother turns into a myth, which may persist in a society pretty much forever. It indeed solves the immigration issue, however: would you run from any life threat into North Korea?
I'm seeing how we're heading exactly that way. If not Trump in 2024, then Brump in 2028. All that matters is that the American power elites are content with a dictatorship. This is exactly how Hitler, Mussolini, Franco and Orban came to power in former democracies: the old pattern repeats over and over. The perception of the US by allies is in the trash, we betrayed them. Europe prepares for a creeping Russian invasion without the US as a NATO ally. Russians are unlikely to be successful in Europe to break up NATO, consume it whole and invade us, not in the next 30 years certainly, despite their last week claim to Alaska (no kidding, they did). Texas and 20 or so red states thinly veiled declaration of war on the federal government is an obvious bluff: they know that they'll get what they want without firing a shot by simply waiting. That's the bad news. While we slowly decompose, the world will forget we existed. We'll give a few countries a border crisis headaches, and a real one this time. Humans have migrated for the whole time they existed on Earth, and always will. I suppose there are quite a number of Americans not content with life in a dictatorship. They will just be on the other end of the same stick.

The war in Ukraine is the most important war since WWII. Aid to Ukraine is far more important than the other items in this bill. Ukraine must not be decoupled from the other issues which concern Trump's agents who hold political power. Most Presidents grew up with reverence for character, intelligence, and the rule of law. It’a weird. For example, I doubt anyone has to be told how to behave in court or at a wedding.
