  • Henrietta Swan Leavitt was employed as a computer - to analyse stellar images for the astronomer she worked for for.

    One thing that you didn't bring up - while astronomers could say star A is apparently as bright as cephid variable star X, until someone worked out the distance to a cephid, the cephid stars could not be used as a standard candle. Unfortunately, I can't remember who measured the distance to nearby cephid stars (using parallax), but once that was accomplished, then astronomers could use cephids as standard candles.
