What I love about the Zelda lore community is their ability to make a 25min video based on a couple random pools of acid used as obstacles for the player and make it all sound logical and compelling.

I had not even really thought about those Green pools before but now that i think about it, that makes 3 forms of magic liquid in the Zelda Franchise. Malice, the blue liquid used in Sheikah technology found in BOTW and the green pools in Ocarina of time. Interestingly the colors all correspond to the 3 goddesses, Nayru, Din and Farore. Perhaps these liquids are some form of pure essence from each of the goddesses used to create Hyrule. It does seem to fit as Farore, represented by the color green created life so it stands to reason that it can reanimate corpses, and is often used to represent spirits. Similarly Nayru is the goddess of Wisdom, represented by the color blue who created Law and order, which in terms of the universe can be calculable with mathematics which would explain why Sheikah technology would use a blue liquid. And Malice is red and black and represents Din who is associated with creating the material realm which might explain why Malice is shown as being more of a goop than a liquid and can take shape such as Malice eyes or Ganons Blights.

@@blitzgirl6522 I don't see why the theory wouldn't hold up. Ocarina of Time 3D is the newer version of the game, and allowed them to put more details and hints in the environments than they could in the original. Which now looks empty compared to the 3DS version. Ocarina 3D is just as canon in my opinion. They didn't change the overal story, they just added some new details.
@@MonsterMaze But someone other than Nintendo did the actual remaster, right? How do we know they didn't put in stuff they wanted to put in without Nintendo's consent? I just can't consider it 100% canon, feels shoe-horned. Plus with all the mods people add to emulated versions of the game that make it not even look the same.
@@blitzgirl6522 Canonicity belongs to the IP holders and those who work on it (the IP), and we don't really decide or have a say about that. By following your logic, a good amount of Zelda games in the timeline are not canon at all because they aren't made by Nintendo EAD/EPD team themselves (Minish Cap, Oracles, Triforce Heroes and most remakes), and so are many books that reveal and explain the lore of the series (notably, Creating a Champion). I'm not going to open the can of worms concerning localisation because following your logic all non-Japanese Zelda games and lore are not canon because the translation isn't done by the creators. If any studio or company is allowed to work on a big IP like this, the creators oversee and it should be considered as canon even if it contradicts the source material from the creator themselves (creators contradict themselves all the time, anyway). That is why Zelda theorists often decide to use the creators' source material for lore rather than spinoffs or something made by third parties if there is a contradiction. Adding worldbuilding and secrets (that may have been originally made by the creators, by the way, since worldbuilding is the first step of making a game) does not make a game noncanon because its original game or the creators were not capable of showing it back then.
@@karihana I think that part of the problem that @Blitzgirl is bringing up is that even the creative teams from Nintendo that are aiding these third-party developers involved in these remasters may not even consist of the original creative teams that made the original games. These different team members could still be adding in details based on interpretations that weren't intended in the original game. Even if they did consist of some original team members, creators can still change their opinions about the intentions behind their creative works over time and make alterations to those works in order to "fix" them. This has already happened in the Zelda series with Majora's Mask 3D, where upon revisiting the original game, Eiji Aonuma is quoted to have thought that something was wrong with him back when he was the game's codirector; a lot ended up being changed in Majora's Mask 3D from the original game which upset many fans. We can assume that the added worldbuilding and secrets in Ocarina of Time 3D were from the original creators, but we can also just as easily assume that @Blitzgirl is right and all the additions were from Grezzo or Nintendo team members who had little to no involvement with the original game's development and probably didn't care if a couple new details were added. None of us were there during the development to really know what the creative team's intentions were, besides "Let's replace these blurry textures with more detailed stuff so the game looks better." Nintendo has never been about developing their games around worldbuilding, it's almost always been about developing worldbuilding and story around gameplay.
Even when you think you've heard of all possible zelda theories, you guys always find a way to deliver some new great ones. Thanks! That video was awesome
"The fact that a lot of people died here doesn't automatically explain why they would rise from the grave." Except many fantasy stories would explain it because of specifically the *way* they seem to have died.
That's what I was thinking too. Dying on the battlefield and being tortured to death are two rather different ways to go. Pretty common fictional concept that the latter would cause more ghosts, zombies, and 'bad vibes' than the former.
Literally in Japan they have special words for the type of ghosts that spawn from different types of death and the ones who die unjustly or in extreme distress are the most dangerous and likely to appear
I love these theories. I wonder if the River of the Dead from BOTW is really the flooded village and temple. If so... It’s pretty close to the resurrection chamber as well. So maybe the connection is even stronger.
One thing that trips me out (and what brought me to this video) is that the music man in the windmill tells Link about playing the Song of Storms before it actually occurs. Link has to travel into the future to learn about an event that has already happened (in the past) before it even occurred. This is probably why they label the inside of the windmill with a "?" when you go in there. Great video guys, thanks! ♥
Never thought about it that way. If that's the case, it makes a lot of sense why Link is the holder of the Triforce of Courage, as he is often seen giving peace to the spirits of the dead.
@Eternal Cowboy Zeldas so full of gravy it’s just ridiculous. Here’s a ladle for ya. Obviously Majoras Masks Stone Tower is the tower of Babylon. They tower they built as a shortcut the heaven go God inverted the whole thing, there’s a reason you turn it upside down to get to the boss who’s definitely not on the moon. The moon landing in Majoras Mask hits a lot closer to Dante’s Paradiso than that boomer NASA nonsense.
@@MonsterMaze I think they know exactly what they’re doing, they maybe run of elves. Wind Waker was all about the flood also I’m pretty sure that in Skyward Sword Hylias supposed to be Gaia. Maybe though with reversed roles with her as the sky and Demise below as Urectum. You know what I mean and I just ended that stupid joke once and for all!
So since this was a Civil War, and there are very few Sheikah left... And Hylians now live in Kakariko. It could be the Royal Family found out about the Sheikah experiments and that kicked off the Civil War. An early version of the Yiga, if you will.
Possibly? Bongo Bongo did lead a traitorous faction of the Sheikah before they were all hunted down by the loyalists and executed. That's where most of the Sheikah had gone by the start of OoT, the ones who weren't killed in battle were killed by other Sheikah. I, personally, think that's where the redead came from, their efforts to develop the techniques that would later preserve the monks in BoTW.
For some reason, "Professor Maze and the Curious Village" is the first thing that came to mind when reading the title ! And the video didn't disappoint, one of your best !
One of the great things about Zelda is how it's like secretly super dark. A couple entries have a more overt dark vibe, but if you look closely enough, most of them are surprisingly creepy and sad. Wind Waker is a post apocalyptic cartoon with an antagonist you can sympathize with, despite his ruthlessness. Breath of the Wild is populated with people suffering from severe post traumatic stress syndrome and barely coping. I think a lot of people miss these things, but not you!
Love how you zelda theorists all show love and support for each other and each others content!!! The heroicism of the lore is not lost on you! It's a truly beautiful thing!
With how smart and resourceful the Sheikah were, I find it hard to believe that they are really dead. I mean they were basically ninjas and they had knowledge of magic and even of tunnels and caves
My own pet theory is that the Sheikah ever being close to extinction was propaganda on their and the Royal Family's part to give them cover if the atrocities beneath Kakariko Village were ever discovered. They just went into hiding after the Hyrulean Civil War and eventually resurfaced in Breath of the Wild's backstory.
Link to the Past hints at a lot of this too. The Dark World is a mirror of Hyrule, and Kakariko's counterpart is The Village of Outcasts. The Village of Outcasts has a vast underground prison, just like OoT Kakariko, full of traps and the like. Also, one of the citizens of Kakariko Village says that one particular building in the town used to be a hideout for a gang of thieves.
How ReDeads were named: -Bringing a person back to life: "Wha? Huh? I'm ALIVE! WOHOO!" Shiekah testers: "A bit too alive... can we kill him again, just.. not as much?" I always thought of the substance in the underground areas as just acid. The fact that this actually adds up with stuff established later on down the road so well is incredibly amusing. :D Okay, seriously, I'm almost angry how well this stuff adds up. XD This is ridiculous. I'd like to think some of this actually occurred to developers and is the reason for many supporting details. I do love the idea they'd embrace this lore.
The explanation of the redeads made me think about Kikyo from Inuyasha as her body is made from clay and bone made from magic and her addition of her soul gave her somewhat free will. The redeads could be made like that completely without free will.
What if the reason for the negative side effects and off coloration is because that is unrefined magic, like how you have to process crude oil to get gasoline
Would that mean the Sheikah book we see all over the place is like a college textbook? Lol. That poor Castle Town shop owner must've kept the book after graduating his apprenticeship because the campus bookstore would only buy it back for 10% of its value. Ngl, I also kept textbooks out of spite.
Great Video! Here's something else to consider. In the game one of the NPCs mentioned Kakariko being opened to the poor of Hyrule by Impa, suggesting that this village wasn't always open to outsiders. Perhaps Kakariko village was originally closed to outsiders, similar to the concept of a Soviet-era 'closed cities' which were used to manufacture weapons or were involved in closely-guarded state secrets? Perhaps the Shadow Temple served as a chief research facility that was eventually converted into a black site for Hylian experimentation while the other tunnels, such as the Well and Dampe's tomb, were planned expansions (as you seem to suggest in your video). Maybe Kakariko Village was deliberately built over the remnants of a Shiekah research station to cover up the research and fallout caused from tampering with forbidden knowledge? You know, once all the undead and demons have been properly sealed away in the ruins.

Could the redeads that Link encounters in the bottom of the well as a child be leftover creations by Bongo Bongo from the time before he was sealed away?
It's hard to say. It's strange actually, because when Link visits the well as a kid, Bongo Bongo is not there. Even though he technically should be in the well still. Even if mister bongo created the redeads inside the well, it still doesn't account for the ones in the Royal Crypt. Kakariko is such a mysterious place!
@@MonsterMaze i think that he is released from the well when ganondorf gains the triforce and is just hiding in the shadow temple, waiting for impa to return after escaping with zelda which is why we cant find him in the well
The blue fire has been a thing since oot so in my mind that is the source of the sheikah tech as reinforcedby botw. Magic itself was used by Hylia and the robots had tech and a power source before there was hyrule. The green fluid was probably a type of acid used for security in the crypt and torture in the well. I appreciate the work you put in but idk bout this one.
Great Theory! It could be possible that the energy also pooled in that initial spot Because of the Shiekah’s activities. Whether they knew this or not. I’ve always viewed the shadow temple as some sort of filter or containment for hatred, with bongo bongo being some manifestation of this “greed and hatred.” This would make it seem similar to Malice, but maybe that’s the point.
I have a theory, based off of this one of course, that the Green liquid is basically magical fossil fuels. Just that, instead of being from dead plants/animals, it's from all those Demise and his demons killed.
You know, I think that Bongo Bongo and by extension the Shadow Temple as well could be connected to the Interlopers, or as they're described in the japanese version, the Shadow Clan. Take a look at Bongo Bongo. He looks VERY similar to the Shadow Beasts of Twilight Princess, heck even his title is *"Phantom Shadow Beast"*. When in direct sunlight, he's either invisible, or visible only as a living shadow, much like Midna does at times. Could Bongo Bongo, in life, have been an interloper? An old man in Kakariko Village speaks of a man "with an eye that they said could see the truth!", and that "his house stood where the well is now". Is it really a coincidence that Bongo Bongo first emerges from the well and that the Lens of Truth is found there? I think not. I think that Bongo Bongo was that very same man. He was once a human being most likely a Sheikah, who due to his greed and hatred, was transformed into a vicious monster. Twilight Princess and the Shadow Temple of Ocarina of Time seem to share a common theme of inner darkness and inner corruption. The interlopers were not an outside force, but were civilians of Hyrule. As stated by a spirit in the Shadow Temple "Here lies Hyrule's bloody history of Greed and Hatred..." Hyrule's worst calamities came from within, and I think that the connections made between the interlopers and the Shadow Temple are too strong to ignore. The Mirror of Twilight, even a small shard, is capable is bringing out the worst in a person and changing them into a horrific monster, as is seen with Yeta, even if they are not bad people themselves. The Fused Shadow is also capable of such a feat. The Mirror of Twilight and the Fused Shadow pieces are even enough to draw in the undead. The darkness attracted the monsters, who gather in both the Shadow Temple and the Arbiter's Grounds in great numbers. So what am I saying exactly? I think that either the fused shadow or the mirror of twilight(or both) were made and kept here, explaining the large concentration of monsters and undead creatures in the Shadow Temple. If Bongo Bongo was able to create the Lens of Truth, who says he stopped creating new things, possibly the mirror of twilight or the fused shadow?
This was really well done. Nicely written and organized. I felt like I was watching a documentary about a real-life place. This is the first Monster Maze video I've seen and it made me subscribe within the first 5 minutes.
Many interesting stuff, but specially the fac that the green pool of presumed spiritual energy could have been version of the Lazarus pit of DC lore is very intriguing OWO!
It is sort of like a nerfed Lazarus pit. Instead of bringing you back from death with a little bit of psychosis, you just come back as a zombie, with little memory of your previous life.
Amazing video as always! Interesting to think that there might be more "sacred water" than just the blue stuff we see regularly. Maybe this green water is farores version? If it does have to do with spirits and the like, and farore is supposed to be the one who gave the spark of life to the world if I'm remembering right. (Additionally, I actually did know a woman who's family grew wheat and barley and had a severe gluten intolerance - she couldnt eat anything off the farm much to her frustration.)
I don't think Ganondorf knows about the reincarnation. Based on that, he may have discovered the redead juice from the king's advisors when he took over, injected HIMSELF with it as a bid for immortality, and that desire for eternal life led to an eternity of not quite being dead until he wakes up in BOTW 2.
I've gotta say, I've seen you guys before and I lpve your theories... but it's even better when you collaborate! You can clearly see how much work goes into these videos, and I just want to let you know we appreciate you guys.
The thing about ganondorf’s body never truly dying. Could that be why they changed the blood he coughs up to green? To further signify that he was experimenting with the spirit juice.
I like how you can always learn something new in such detail, from unspoken lore. So much hints and evidence that "just" lies around for you guys to pick up and formulate into hypotheses or theories. Especially from a game that came out in the late 90s; and not even (majorly?) contradicting older and newer games. Awesome. That is why I love the Zelda franchise (well, I grew up with it). I think many absorb those things subconsciously, but wouldn't know how to explain. You guys can and do, so thanks!
Damn, this makes a LOT of sense! Especially how the green pool at the bottom of the well was randomly dug out, it does indeed look that way so why did I never think of it? If we take inspiration from some fantasy novels then it would make sense to say that, as Hyrule is inherently a place that contains magic, this magic has to be present everywhere in the world in varying higher and lower concentrations. And it might be then that the earth, too, is inhabited by magic in the form of veins running through it like long, thick, liquid roots. And then it just so happened that the Sheikah stumbled upon such a vein. It's not that different from fossil fuels, just that magic has a lot more potential. And here we also have our tie in back into the science of botw.
@@MonsterMaze Yeah, like that! And if we tie that into the interpretation of green standing both for magic and for souls, we can go further and say that magic is the same thing as life force and the magic veins we speculated about are literally the blood of the planet. And it damages Link when standing inside it because, instead of the life force flowing into him in the form of magic, his life force is being sucked out. And also, the green stuff would then again have a connection to redeads because it could infuse dead bodies with lifeforce, kind of like a faux soul, a replica of the real thing, just coming from the earth itself. I mean, let’s look at A Link between Worlds real quick. Isn’t magic substituted for stamina there? And stamina, in a sense, is the energy stored inside the body making it move. Its life force. In that way we could again speculate that ALbW Link is the only Link inherently capable of magic by sacrificing his stamina for power. Luckily it regenerates, because I could imagine that sacrificing more than your stamina would result in damage to your hearts. Wait... Hearts interchangeable for stamina? Botw anyone? :P
Seems more of an allegory for our own world to me. Uranium is green, mined, and has killed plenty of people. It's unlimited power but at what cost? IDK
Sufficiently analyzed Magic is undisinguishable from Science. D&D has a few settings known for this philosophy, Eberron being most famous for this. The technology in BotW is clearly Magitech.
bravo! an absolute banga theory MonsterMaze and NBC!! this is genuinely a truly unanswered mystery and its fantastic to see it brought to light! I always brushed over the strange liquid/fumes thinking it a mere trap when I was a child. Amazing work on the writing, recording and editing.
If you go to the old lady's shop behind the regular potion shop, her potions give that same kind of smoke. It's remincent of malice moreso in a way, hurting you when you touch it and presumably reanimating the dead and such, except its shown here to be green to be a visional indicative "it's poisonous, don't walk in it" to the player. I mean unless the "lava" beneath ganon's castle isn't just lava, the coloration of the mask and lens of truth don't make sense if they pulled the green substance from underneath the village. After all, both the mask and lens of truth share the eye of malice, and the lens is the same color as the "poisonous red water" found in skyward sword and the malice goop in botw.
The lore of the magic so so crazy. I love how you’re able to critically think of the lore on the green substance. I never thought twice of the “scaffolding” on the green pool at the bottom of the well until now. Now this makes perfect sense.
Your channel is mindblowing. That's such a good feeling to dive again into some classic Zelda with a new look on certain places or events. I love these kind of theories, even though there are a lot of "what if", it's always very interesting and it all makes sense. You guys rock at storytelling and visual presentations ! Thanks to make us discover new things on games we thought we knew everything on it !
Maybe this explains how the Stone & Shard of Agony work too, since if they use this theoretical "Spirit Magic" then maybe they can commune with nearby spirits, or indeed the spirit of the earth itself, to allow the user to find secret places.
This is the best theory I have seen so far. The explanations you gave make sense. Especially the connection between the Sheika and secret operations on behalf of the Hyrule Royal Family. Perfect theory.
Good video but link in OOT actually has access to magic without the use of a magic item. After he is granted magic power by the great fairies, he can do a magic spin attack. This implies that link may have the spirit required for magic but not the reservoir of power needed to fuel it. Also in other Zelda games, link has access to sword beams which are clearly also magical.
This was a fantastic lore theory video. You gave me so much to consider and think about. I can't get over that even after so many years, these games still can be delved into deeper.

What a great video to enjoy my breakfast with. Very dark and interesting history. Imagine living in the village and stumbling upon that creepy underground. Yikes.
I just assume the green shit has the power to bring the dead back to life and the royal family put it in their own graves in the hopes it would do that for them but instead they turned into redead, and then bongo bongo was in the room full of it for the same reason, to try and make himself a new body.
That was a thought I had as well. I always found it strange how the poem in the royal family's tomb is for the royal family, and yet all it talks about is the tortured undead beings residing in the crypt. The redeads possibly being royal family members as well has always been an idea I had.

Aaaand just when I thought you couldn't get any better at cinematography and editing, you did just that. This was a spectacle to watch, as well as a hell of a theory that attempts to tie so much of this Kakariko weirdness (and even BotW 2) together. Impressively well done sir.

I've said this before but I want to say it again, they should 100% add redeads to BOTW2. Anyone else agree?
One could argue that dehydrated ganondorf is a pretty close example
That makes sense when ganondorf gained power in OoT all of the town was ran up with redeads so he casted a curse on the people and turned them into redeads and then whoever imprisoned him under Hyrule castle In botw casted the curse on him?

Hi
Monster maze makes a new video
Nintendo: let's go we get to learn the lore
BTW, isn't it "Hyrulean War" instead of "Hyrulian War"?
"You've just watched another Monster Maze production,
consider yourself knowlegde."

We can't have comments without typos either!
Never ever noticed the Sheikah texts in the houses around Hyrule. So many great arguments made in this video you guys.
But did those books with the logo exist in the original N64 version of the game? If they didn't, then this theory doesn't hold up.

Thanks for watching! Im glad you enjoyed it ^^
okay 👌 what
"The fact that a lot of people died here doesn't automatically explain why they would rise from the grave."
Except many fantasy stories would explain it because of specifically the *way* they seem to have died.
And the moral of the story is: don’t mess around with Farore‘s powers. She gives life, and she can take it away.
Well said
Never thought about it that way. If that's the case, it makes a lot of sense why Link is the holder of the Triforce of Courage, as he is often seen giving peace to the spirits of the dead.
@@dayshallcomeagain That gives a lot of context to Majoras Mask too.
Uh, yeah lol. I would think that messing around with and trying to abuse the powers of a deity is just generally a bad idea.
@@cifge_404 Well, that and the fact that the energy is green.
Also Kakariko is the sound a rooster makes in French, which Paris has very similar well known catacombs.

@@JariDawnchild pure speculation
@@darkhobo Of course, that's what makes stuff like this fun lol.
I love how interconnected the Zelda theory community really is.
For some reason, "Professor Maze and the Curious Village" is the first thing that came to mind when reading the title !
And the video didn't disappoint, one of your best !
Professor Maze says: Thank you!
Hyrule Field is also teeming with undead - Stalchildren when you're a child and Big Poes when you're an adult.
"If we as Zelda fans had to choose... zombies are obviously cooler. I mean, come on."
this makes you wonder if the cave the Ganondorf is sealed in is underneath Botw's kakariko village
* Snake cardboard box surprise sound effect *
How ReDeads were named:
-Bringing a person back to life: "Wha? Huh? I'm ALIVE! WOHOO!"
Shiekah testers: "A bit too alive... can we kill him again, just.. not as much?"
I always thought of the substance in the underground areas as just acid. The fact that this actually adds up with stuff established later on down the road so well is incredibly amusing. :D
Okay, seriously, I'm almost angry how well this stuff adds up. XD This is ridiculous. I'd like to think some of this actually occurred to developers and is the reason for many supporting details. I do love the idea they'd embrace this lore.
Ahh yes😌. Perfect video to go with my dinner for tonight after work. Thanks monster maze you are amazing.👍🏾
The medicine shop owner in castle Town is also a student of the old lady in Kakariko.

Love your videos bro please keep making these zelda videos gives me nostalgia every time ❤
Could the redeads that Link encounters in the bottom of the well as a child be leftover creations by Bongo Bongo from the time before he was sealed away?
It's hard to say. It's strange actually, because when Link visits the well as a kid, Bongo Bongo is not there. Even though he technically should be in the well still. Even if mister bongo created the redeads inside the well, it still doesn't account for the ones in the Royal Crypt. Kakariko is such a mysterious place!
@@MonsterMaze i think that he is released from the well when ganondorf gains the triforce and is just hiding in the shadow temple, waiting for impa to return after escaping with zelda which is why we cant find him in the well
@@MonsterMaze mister bongo was probably busy practicing his bongo skills somewhere out of reach in the bottom of the well
The blue fire has been a thing since oot so in my mind that is the source of the sheikah tech as reinforcedby botw. Magic itself was used by Hylia and the robots had tech and a power source before there was hyrule. The green fluid was probably a type of acid used for security in the crypt and torture in the well. I appreciate the work you put in but idk bout this one.
youve clearly put a lot of thought into this, its fascinating !
I like that theory
This was really well done. Nicely written and organized. I felt like I was watching a documentary about a real-life place. This is the first Monster Maze video I've seen and it made me subscribe within the first 5 minutes.
Many interesting stuff, but specially the fac that the green pool of presumed spiritual energy could have been version of the Lazarus pit of DC lore is very intriguing OWO!
It is sort of like a nerfed Lazarus pit. Instead of bringing you back from death with a little bit of psychosis, you just come back as a zombie, with little memory of your previous life.
Let's go Jerm!
Sorry for the late reply. I had some nasty deadlines after this video went up haha
Different Ganondorf.
I've gotta say, I've seen you guys before and I lpve your theories... but it's even better when you collaborate! You can clearly see how much work goes into these videos, and I just want to let you know we appreciate you guys.
This is so well put together. I am sold, as usual!
The thing about ganondorf’s body never truly dying. Could that be why they changed the blood he coughs up to green? To further signify that he was experimenting with the spirit juice.
I have ALWAYS thought Bongo Bongos eye looks suspiciously like the Sheikah eye.
I've always thought of that green stuff as acid used as a minor protective measure, but I love the idea of it being a sort of magical lifeblood!
Brilliant quality, like always!
So magic in Hyrule is kinda like Mana in a sense? Something tangable that exists, and is responsible for the existence of magic.
IDK
This is so well edited, my eyes are loving this

Sufficiently analyzed Magic is undisinguishable from Science.

Mysterious green spirit magic? Zonai vibes. Wonder how many times i have heard the word ”zonai“ now
I purposely didn't call them by name in this video haha. But yes... Zonai!
Probably too many to count
I’ve already said it on some of your streams, but I will never be tired to repeat - Your editing is so inspiring! Keep up an amazing work!

Good video but link in OOT actually has access to magic without the use of a magic item. After he is granted magic power by the great fairies, he can do a magic spin attack. This implies that link may have the spirit required for magic but not the reservoir of power needed to fuel it.
