I've seen a lot of artists over the years that I love playing on Letterman and pretty much every time I've thought "meh". This, though, is absolutely *fucking* brilliant. They all REALLY nail it and really look like they are into it. Easily the best live performance I've seen on his show. Shawn looks like a kid in a sweetshop here. Fabulous. The backing vocalist is superb and makes you realise just how important that harmony line is to the song.
This riff is so fine. Her rhythm guitar concept is so inventive. I don't know,? how much does Leventhal figure into this? But his production on Fat City was, well, of another level...,and she responds to this high rawk energy with great songs that can work in this setting and as solo pieces. Joni Mitchell comes to mind - I think it's epic.
@@lonerwiththecamera Love Leventhal, but Colvin absolutely shines on her own. Saw her show at the Vilar center in Beaver Creek Co, where she played solo the entire night. Just Shawn and her guitar. She captivated everyone for the whole show, not many people can do that.
The harmonica parts were definitely Leventhal's on the original studio recording. I remember Shawn did one live show, played this song, and various people in the crowd were called upon to do the harmonica solo.
this is my first time to find this upload; how, Why?? :D this is theeee most awesome piece of gold upload, right here. all elements within. magical. just super. thank you.
Fun Fact: She actually was on the Gary Schandling show "The Larry Sanders Show" Doing this song. I think maybe she was on there first even. Gary Schandling seemed to always discover music on that show. Pretty cool song.
Actually you are right. I had to go back and check. She performed Polaroids Season 4 episode 15 but then also came the following season and Did Season 5 Episode 5 with Get out of this house. I guess I never realized she was on the Larry Sanders show twice. Gary Shandling was a pretty big fan I guess. @anyway96
This occuring in 1995 would be impressive, since the clip starts with Letterman promoting the CD, which Colvin hadn't even started RECORDING in 1995. Maybe she's a time traveller.
RIP Michael Rhodes....
Legend
♥ great performance! I still listen to Shawn.

Without Leventhal, she doesn't even sniff the Grammy's.
Having said that, you have to have great songs that a producer can work with.
A lot. He’s a giant. Bit of ego but what can u expect

Great performance of this song! She's looking and sounding great-- dig
the back up singer and band too.
Think it’s Kate Markowitz backing her

@anyway96 the whole series is on HBOMAX. I go back and watch the series every year or so. Very Groundbreaking show in my opinion.
great performance
Thanks!! :D
THEY BROUGHT WILL AND GRACE, ROSEANNE AND SO ON BACK. PLEASE BRING BACK LETTERMAN.
Who is her background vocalist?
Yow... looks like John Leventhal was playing the wrong part of the song and went into the bridge instead back into the verse @1:38
mistakes happen
Think you’re right. I’d f up too on national tv
Fantastic album... but she's got more than a few of those. "Lovely song"?!! Uh... David - did you ever listen to lyrics? "Lovely" is exactly wrong-!!
🎵🤘🩰
This is 1995
October 11, 1996, is correct.
