Yeah, it basically redefined what was available at its price point in terms of performance. It's not too unique now, simply because there's a billion Chinese D2 and G10 liner-lock flippers on bearings now, including many from reputable brands, but a few years ago when the Elementum rolled out it was a game-changer.
Started with an Elementum, these days carry a Kizer Drop Bear. To me, that's the best of all worlds with basically the same shape, little bit more contour to the scales, and the crossbar lock.
If we loosen the 3 inch blade limit a little, I think some things that rival the Elementum in popularity would include the CJRB Pyrite, the QSP Penquin and the Kizer Drop Bear. Those are the knives that compete for time in my pocket when I am looking to carry a knife around 3 inches.
I'm with you. Love both the RAT 1 & RAT 2. I have several of both. Perform well, very dependable & good value. I prefer a flat grind over a hollow - like you indicate - for a bit more toughness. Take care.
Thanks DCA for another great video. I already own 3 of what you listed here - the Rat 2, Mini Dundee, and the Terminus XR. Soon to be 4 when the Yonder is back in stock. (Zac did a really nice job on this design, and I love the blade shape) Like some others, I'd say a Drop Bear is another option, though a bit more money. And the Kizer Nice Guy is a good budget priced model too.
I am partial to Kizer. I like their steel choices and the way they combine flippers with button locks. But I also love the Civivi products, even if I don’t own an Elementum.
I've purchased over a hundred pocket knives since buying a Zancudo when they first came out, and it's still the one I carry well over 90% of the time. It fits the hand perfectly (thanks to its weird frame shape) and is the thinnest knife I have. If someone was to make one with a titanium frame and better knife steel, I would never look at any "New Release" webpage again.
QSP Penguin. DCA i can't believe you didn't include the universally recommended QSP Penguin. Its been my go-to recommendation for people pretty much since its release. Non-intimidating, easy to use, feels great in hand, great budget, D2 steel or 14c28n options, and a perfect size and shape for edc.
Part of what has made the Elementum so popular in my mind is that its just a knife and its well done. The base models are plane and simple. No frills or crazy design. its just a knife and thats what non-knife people want. For knife guys, there a million different versions out of there for them to choose from.
I own the WE Elementum and it feels and fits perfectly in hand. I like the upgraded materials titanium and 20CV. I do hope to see a WE Elementum 2 with a button lock.
As a lefty, almost everything beats the elementum since we/civivi have bizarrely chosen to make the elementum - one of - if not their most popular model - right hand only in the clip department. Despite the fact that almost every other civivi has an ambi clip. The one exception being the large gravity knife/button lock elementum but that falls a bit outside of my size preferences
I have yet to handle an Elementum, but it has never really flipped my switch. I do agree with the Squid XM and pretty much every other knife on the table. I am going to venture a little bit into left field and mention the medium Honey Badger. The plain drop point, yes, but my go to is actually the wharncleaver. I do a lot with that knife and I always thought it didn’t get enough attention. It may not stack up exactly with the Elementum, but I’d pit it against most of the knives on the table today. Great video, as always!!! Thank you!
I actually started with a Kershaw Cryo. A few years after that I really got into the knife hobby. Strangely the only Elementum I have is the mini in brass, which is fun and very cool looking if not the most practical.
This video hits right at a point I think should be a specific comparison/ search selection on the website. I would love to have a sales category for budget classics.
@@tricky48 sadly I'm not able to order at knifecenter since I'm from Germany, shipping simply is too expensive and elementums are at least 65 over here...

Any reason you didn't include the QSP Penguin? I love the elementum, and have 2 (one with the regular drop point in D2 and a Damascus wharncliffe) that I carry regularly. The Penguin is on a short list of knives I may buy soon.
The blade on the Penguin is more specialized, and would make a good alternate to the Wharncliffe Elementum, but in this vid I was primarily focused on the OG Elementum and what it does best, and that takes the more generically versatile blade shape into account. -DCA

Could you do a video on non-budget alternatives to Elementum? It will be interesting to know what options there are for people looking for same size and feel, but more premium version.
Yay, one of my first knives made it to the video. The sog terminus, even same color scales. Probably a bit more "beatable"/sturdy feeling, than the elementum. But, at some point I will still have to get a button lock elementum.
Civivi ellementum in green micarta was the first "modern" knife I bought since getting back into pocket knives. Since then I've been thru a lot..lol. I did upgrade to the WEE titanium elementum in 20CV and it was way better than the Civivi. IMO the 3" knife blade is the perfect size for usability and control. I also like the Bugout in S30V. Quiet Carry Drift is an awesome looking 3" knife as well. The elementum is a good all around choice to point people to when they're first getting into knives.
Glad Vosteed got a shoutput. I know it doesnt quite fit the length restrictions, but the Vosteed Racoon is my preferred choice over the elementu. A similar price, size, cariety of finishes, and of course friendly to lefties like me.
I loved my elementum when it first came out, but my knafs became my edc. It's not as satisfying to open but it overall has just a better blade. Also have grown to not like the grind on the elementum as much. I think the thing I like about both the lander and Elementum is they seem to have a very non tactical friendly shape. I can take them out and use them at work and not scare people lol
The comparison wish the Lander sold me! A pet peeves of mine is designs that put your hand far away from the blade (even worse is "solving" the problem with a finger choil) so the Lander looks really nice. Why can't more designers figure that out?
I pick the Kizer Laconic Amicus as a worthy rival - especially the one with FRN handles and NitroV blade. The QSP Canary folder is also extremely good, that is, if you are OK with a bunch of speed holes on the handle.
I feel like there are so many more that can be put in the same class as the elementum. Even just in cjrb's line up and another Kershaw might be the leek or the mini iridium I know the leek is older but still the same concept. So many "do it all edc" folders right around the 3 inch mark
I have a d2 fixed blade elementum, the first Gen button lock elementum in carbon fiber and damascus, and an elementum U, which I use a lot. My wife likes her civivi alt.
I still have some usa Kershaw skylines from back in the day, back when it was 40 bucks lol. Definitely my favorite handle shape oat. I might have to pick me up that skyline mini 🤔

Maybe the Kizer Riverbank w/2.99" Nitro-V Steel Blade, Micarta Handle, Reversible Clip for under $50. Or the Kizer Drop Bear w/2.98” Nitro-V Steel Blade, Acrylic or G-10/Carbon Fiber Handle, Clutch Lock, Reversible Clip for $62. Good contenders for the V1 and V2 3" Elementum, IMO.
Having taken apart both a corgi pup by vosteed and large button lock elementum, I think the vosteed is a better design overall. Though I do wish it had a finger guard or choil.

I have to give Civivi credit in making such a generic & generally bland knife because in doing so they have also made probably the most adaptable & utilitarian knife in the market. There are enough versions/options to suit everyone. (BTW I'm not dissing this knife - I own two.) My favourite, however, is the R2D2. If I need to use a smaller blade it tends to be the one I grab without too much thinking because I know it will work. Sharp blades all.
Hello KC, Hey D.A., IMHO, anything with a handle/blade less than 3.5 inches shouldn't be considered an icon for a folder. Unless ya have small hands then perhaps that's your jam... Other than that a pocket fixed blade or a neck knife should be smaller. Just say'n. Keep up the good work and vids. Be safe and take care, "God Bless", sincerely, Randy. 😇🙏👊
I can't really say any of those knives do anything for me. Especially the plain ass frame locks. Elementum is on my list though. What about the mini Praxis? Mini Iridium? Amicus? Arcblast? Canary? Kizer Yorkie or Drop Bear? And I'll also add the Schrade Divergent.

That's why he left the button and the XBar locks for their own segment at the end, as they were diverging from the theme a little... however they were still direct size comparable.
The Elementum has a frustratingly short handle for my hands. The Elementum (not II) button locks, which from what I see online are larger, are not currently offered with the steel I want, and it lacks a flipper. It's frustrating, because otherwise I love the knife -- like, enough that it'd be my first choice for EDC. But getting 3 and a half fingers on the handle is really annoying. I want Civivi to introduce a larger Elementum -- exactly the same as the original, but a little bit larger. Flipper. Ideally with upgraded steel. A $150 version.
If the Elementum were lefty-friendly I would have three or four in the collection. I’ve liked them since they came out, but no love for the lefties. So sad! Maybe an updated version in the future will feature the standard elementum design with reversible clip.

It's pretty prevalent on other platforms, though. Forums, blogs, vlogs, other YT Knife channels, pretty much everywhere knives are discussed, (EDC knives, anyway, not task specific knives like tactical, bushcraft, camp, etc.,) you will see folk comparing other knives to the Elementum as a base line comparison, more often than not.
I'm an Army vet and it breaks my heart that these Chinese companies are knocking it out of the park. Reviews for Civivi and the like are all pretty stellar. Look at the reviews for U.S. made knives. Over priced and under preforming. I want a Houge k320 but I may have to get a drop bear.
The elementum is absolutely a modern icon. Probably my most used knife. Love the weight and the hollow grind.

I'll echo the more knife history! Its more interesting than you think! Give us a full sized Skyline, my wallet is waiting
Mind boggling over a million units moved of one model.
