- A little over a year ago I used Seafoam and Lucas in the Ford Ranger. The engine was making a lot of noise. The gasoline engine sounded more like a diesel engine. After using Seafoam and Lucas, the engine sounded great! But did the fix last? In this video, we take a closer look at the ranger, looking inside the oil pan using a boroscope, checking the oil and filter for contamination, and checking the used oil for film strength. My mechanic friends say no to seafoam. After watching your video and realizing the lifter ticking in my Jeep with 150k was getting louder, I decided to use it as you demonstrate. Your mechanic friends say no to sea foam because you fixed all that for under $100 with sea foam. They can't charge you $80 to diagnose the problem, then $125 an hour to change parts. Lol

If you had first wrapped your magnet in plastic cling wrap, like you'd use on leftovers, or stuck the magnet inside a finger of a white latex glove; you could have removed the wrap from the magnet and been able to see the debris left behind much easier.
I learned that trick as a kid after I spilled BBs on a shag carpet. The wrap made the BBs MUCH easier to remove from the magnet! Now I keep a strong magnet wrapped in plastic wrap for picking up nuts, bolts and washers that get spilled on my shop floor.

I have added seafoam to the gas at oil change for years. Recently I added some to the oil and waited 100 miles. Then changed oil, the engine had about 150,000 miles and the restored power was very noticeable

@@toxeia Should work to help resolve the issue if lubrication is the problem. The lucas replacing a quart of oil + seafoam at the recommended amount for the oil capacity will clear things up over a week or 2 of daily driving. I found doing that and a single tank gas treatment each oil change keeps the valve train noise to a minimum if not helped restore engine power and lubrication. As less garbage is floating around in the fuel system and the oil.
What compartment can I put the seafoam in other than the fuel tank? I'm new to these. Any advice? Thanks.

I really appreciate how you get right to the point. You don't waste 5 - 10 min on every video telling people who you are, or what your all about. You get straight to the point. You quickly describe the question you are trying to answer, how you do the test, and then get right into testing. You also do a great job of wrapping everything up at the end. @@ProjectFarm ... Been seeing a number of processes touted in the comments and replies. My own practice is to add a quart of cheap ATF to the crankcase a day or two before the oil change. Use the vehicle as usual, allowing The fluid in oil to wash the inside of the engine. Next day or so, change oil and filter. I like to use Valvoline Racing oil, normally, but in truth, most oils are perfectly fine for use in our older vehicles.

Just found your channel. As a retired technician of over 45 years, I can attest to the strengths of Seafoam and Lucas products. Both are about the best out there, in their field. As I haven't read all your millions of comments, congrats on such a large base BTW, I don't know if anyone has told you that the 2.9L engine in your truck has a solid lifter cam in it from the factory, and there is an adjustment for them. You have to remove the valve covers, so if it's as quiet as it is in the vids, at this mileage I wouldn't touch it yet. The Seafoam did wonders to it. From seeing your initial vid on this as well, I saw how built up your throttle body is too. The gasket is only a couple bucks at the parts store, and removing the linkage and 4 bolts attaching it to the intake to use a plastic hard bristle toothbrush to scrub it while spraying it with Seafoam, will make your idle quality and throttle response like new. Just a long couple of points to add to your very nice production.

@@erikkeever3504 its an 86-88 with that front end and a 2.9. The 2.9 had hydraulic lifters but the previous 2.8 was a solid lifter motor.
This is an older video but I know you read all comments and I just saw it!! Look at BG products, proven effectiveness and a complete range of products!! I have personally used their BG 44k for years and seen real increases in performance and gas milage. Also try Lucus SYNTHETIC oil additive instead, it's nowhere near as thick!

Had similar issues with my 1993 toyota 4x4 pickup. Over 225k miles showing. 22re efi 4 cylinder engine. Used the BG 115 MOA and BG 109 EPR. It comes in a combo pack. Did the 115 cleanse and then fresh oil fresh 15-40 synthetic oil and new toyota oil filter. 600 miles later (2 tanks of gas) I am amazed at the increase in power. I can now drive the speed limit on the interstate and it stopped using oil. Hwy MPG went from 15 to 24.5 which it does in town. No oil leaks to report. The truck just feels Happy. I have a question for you. I know you maybe biased towards those products. I currently own an 05 Civic EX with VVT (Variable Valve Timing). I've purchased the "Low Viscosity forumula" of Lucas as it's meant for VVT engine. My engine has a ticking sound & burns oil. I've been told to use "Rislone Engine Oil Treat (yellow bottle) or the Rislone Compression Repair with Ring Seal." I mainly want to tackle the oil consumption as the noise I can live with by cranking the music up. If I can hit both than that's even better.
My thing is, do you have experience with these products? If so, any thoughts on them? I've tried Lucas oil stablizer in the past & it seemed to have helped maybe an extra 1k miles before losing oil between changes. I usually do 5k oil changes. I also use HM oil 5w-20 & am against going higher as I'd like to stay with the manufactor reccomends. Maybe I'll try 5w-30, but dont se myself going high than that if need be. I know I said alot, but I'd like your opinion, thanks!
Same here, I don’t change my oil without a bottle of Lucas heavy duty oil stabilizer to substitute a quart of oil, now I’m probably gonna use seafoam regularly in my crankcase and fuel tank and prob throttle body occasionally
@@dbzownz12345 When using a multi viscosity motor oil, you need not be concerned that your are using 5w-30, or even 5w-40, because the higher number will protect aginst extreme heat. The lower number will lubricate at colder temps. My 67 Buick Riviera calls for 10w-30, but I can run 10w-40 with no issues. I hope that helps.
@@CHEECHMUN 10w-40 is a good middle -of-the-road oil, my dad used it in all of his vehicles and it's all he ever used, I use it in all of mine too. it's kinda hard to find in certain brands though.

Doesn't Scotty recommend against using seafoam as it was designed for 2 stroke engines it doesn't have any of the modern cleaning additives
@@watchinyoutube8919 He doesn't like using it for the same purposes it was used here because the sludge it broke up could get into the oil holes, clog them up and lock up the engine before you know it. The Car Wizard feels the same exact way.
However, there are people who get good results with it like this and since it's just a farm truck I'm sure it was well worth the try. He got the opposite results, freeing up his oil flow.
Scotty also likes another product more than seafoam but I forgot what it is. It is sold as a two pack with oil and fuel additives, and they don't as much break up the sludge as they slowly break down (melt) the carbon which is much less dangerous.
Also, I noticed a new Lucas Oil Stabilizer product that isn't so thick and is for more modern OHC engines at the store the other day and I'm about to get get me some and try it.

My best tip for helping keep metal shavings from wearing engine parts, is to put a large flat magnet, such as those that are on the back of stereo speakers, on the bottom of your oil pan. The magnet will attract and catch metal shavings preventing them from cycling back through your engine. Just remember to take the magnet off before an oil change so the shavings can drain out with the old oil.
The magnet trick also works when stuck to the bottom of your fuel tank, for keeping rust particles from getting from your fuel tank to the injectors or clogging up filters.

@@ScoredPiston , love the FilterMAG product line. Project Farm can also see other videos online showing how they work (opened up filters). I am installing filters for my power steering, transmission and oil bypass and all will have FilterMAG's on them (sub micron contaminants)
You can pull the magnets out of an old hard drive too - they are pretty powerful!
@@davidpeters8813 I'm not aware of if,or what kind, of magnets are in a typical hard drive , but my guess is the it would have a small surface area. Also, people seem to be emphasizing the power of the magnets. I have to caution that just a moderate size/strength magnet is all that is necessary. Especially one that has some surface area such the flat round magnets 3-6 inches in diameter that come on the back of stereo speakers. Using strong magnets such as rare earth magnets could lead to cracking your oil pan/fuel tank if you have trouble pulling it free from the tank or you let it go and it makes harsh contact with the tank. The magnet just needs to be strong enough to hold itself in place and capture small metal shavings and/or rust particles through the floor of a thin walled oil pan or fuel tank.
@@UnknownUzer I'm not sure what kind of magnets they are, but they're about 1/2" wide and 1 1/2" long. They have good holding power, so it should work well to attract metal filings in the pan.

@@gr8fullfred You can get your standard kitchen can opener to do the same thing! Just tilt it sideways and remove the paper from the side of the can. Works great for Corned Beef Hash.

Hi bud, first off just wanted to say great and informative content!! I don't know if anyone else has mentioned it but Lucas oil also makes a synthetic stabilizer which works better in colder climates than the regular stabilizer, same benefits thinner formula. It's what I use up here in Canada, works perfectly!!

Around 5 years ago I saw your video where you added it to the oil on the Ranger... My 99 Corolla had a little rattle on the top end, and I tried it. Sure enough, it quieted down. Even since then, before every oil change I do, I dump a third of a bottle into the oil and drive around for 15 minutes or so.. the rattle is still gone, and it certainly can't hurt. So, seafoam in the oil for a drive before an oil change is a win in my book.
I use UA-cam for a variety topics. everything from technology to home remodeling and auto repairs. its amazing that almost everything I've been searching in the last 6months has had your videos show up as the top results. you do an amazing job, right to the point, cover all the points! and of course the no sponsor ship, is refreshing. After watching your video I decided to perform the same service on my 22 year old Mercedes-Benz C230 4-cyl that was running good, but just a bit noisy.
After spraying the Seafoam in the hot engine I let the car sit for several days before driving it in order for the Seafoam to do it's best.
Well! I didn't expect the huge performance boost, nor did I expect the engine to run so smoothly. The change is outstanding. I'm sold! Thank you for your efforts, and my car thanks you as well.

Great videos. I've been restoring a 4.7 Dakota and thought the timing chain was the culprit of my woes. Used seafoam and the engine restore due to your reviews and my mechanic said the truck is good for at least another 100k miles! Appreciate the honesty and the test format. Now I'm binge watching all your other videos

Excellent video, great channel. Your vids are very informative, and there's no BS to be found here. I recently tried Seafoam to address a rough idle on my 06 Dakota, and even having only driven half a tank, I already notice a difference. I tried it on mechanic's advice, and he recommended two cans full in the gas tank when filling up, so having seen your video, I expect good things when the treatment is complete. Hey man, got a pro tip for you. They make lots of funnel strainers for filtering debris when you're trying to find shavings, particles, etc. Or if you want to reuse a product (oil, coolant, etc) but don't want to dump dirt and debris back in an engine. But my tip isn't just the funnel strainers, but instead a close cousin. Go to any autobody supply store and they hand out dozens of 'one time use' paper/metal mesh paint strainers. They fit perfect in a funnel, you can throw them away, they're usually free, and they filter much finer (smaller micron) than some funnel strainers. Autobody paint guns are finicky so they need clean paint, and those strainers do just that. They also filter every other liquid product in my garage as well. Been watching you for years, and love your videos, sir.

Seafoam has never failed to impress me. Considering this is a year old, it's probably just as well I got nothing to add on a product for compression. I've tried various limp-along "solutions" in the past, but nothing that didn't end up being something to waste money on before rebuilding the top end. I guess that's actually kind of a product recommendation; new rings. It's unfortunate that's the one you were trying to avoid. if you find something that works, I'd definitely watch a follow up video on it.
Great videos by the way. Your channel is one of very few, I've never suspected of shilling for profit. I didn't see the first video of this follow up, I don't know that truck, and a Ranger actually did me wrong once, but I caught myself starting to worry the verdict on shaving contamination was going to go the other way. I was even more surprised when I realized I was thinking, "Go little truck! Go!" during the test drive. I guess I must be a fan. Or, maybe I just need to get out more...

Today I've tried Engine Restore (Thanks to him) and after 40km i Think and half an hour of cooling down and restarting it to drive back home. the engine felt like 18000km younger (125cc bike with 1st piston and 26000km) 10,6bar instead of 12,5bar (+-0,5bar) i hope i get it to 12bar and if im lucky and ive got a good one i may get it back to 12,5 or 13 bar :D
It's amazing how technology has advanced... 20-30 years ago, you'd need a crew to get these shots. Now, a person can do it all on their own with the right tools.
Been a Lucas guy for years. Have a Ford E250 4.2 L 2003 with 355000 hard miles. Pour seafoam in for years but today just did the spray from watching your video. Thanks!

This was an amazing test of SeaFoam and Lucas. I tried it on my Ford F150 and Toyota Sequoia and they both seemed to run better and quieter. Thank you Project Farm!!! Still waiting to see an episode testing oil filters. I would love to see how name brands compare to factory filters - Ford and Toyota.

I've said it many times, Seafoam is the most amazing product I've ever discovered for aging ICE vehicles. I got turned onto Seafoam in the early 2000's, I wish I'd of had it back in the 1970 & 80's when I was working on cars all the time. I used seaform before oil changes in my crankcase & in my gas several times per year on my vehicles. It's just an amazing product.

I was never a buyer of any of these kinds of products until I saw this video a few years ago. Ever since I've been buying seafoam by the gallon and used the intake spray on a lot of older vehicles and tractors. It's also what got me into this channel and now, before I buy just about any engine product, I see if you've got a video on it first! I love this channel and talk about it often with friends and family

@@ProjectFarm ... How the heck did you get those flyover videos, where you're driving down the lane on the farm? The only way I can think that you did that is with a GoPro on a very tightly controlled drone with a highly skilled 'pilot' to boot.
Loved the video, my winter driver, a 92 Dodge Caravan (3.3 L) is exhibiting similar engine problems ... and will now try to adress them following these procedures.
