Great review! Was stuck on if I needed an XLR mic because all the videos on a home studio set up featured them. But USB should be fine since I'll just be rapping over beats for fun. Thanks!

Immediately noticed when you switched from one mic to the other in voice quality.. The XLR was full bodied voice with deeper bass in your voice, the USB was thin and raspy sounding even though the distance to the mic was same, and same brand mic. USB mic has it's uses, but definitely for higher quality work the XLR is superior!

Problem with that is the money you’re willing to spend, $100 for the mic + $100 for the audio interface + other stuff you’re willing to add to the chain will turn very expensive fast, while the $150 usb mic will cost only that and give a very good sound quality, and the XLR is also hard to configure. Also, the USB in this test turns out weird mid video for some reason, probably the Operating System changed the mic volume or applied some voice effect while he was recording, the same could happen in the XLR version and you’d spend a lot of time troubleshooting as there would be many links in the chain.
And to add, they are the same mic from the same brand but their electronics are very different, the USB has a built in converter/power transformer while the XLR needs outside phantom power.
There’s also the portability, as someone who might move the mic alot, carrying a boom arm, mic, cables and audio interface(XLR) would take more space than carrying only the mic, cables and boom arm(USB), provided that you’ll put it in an boom arm as they come with a support that you can attach and let the mic on the table (at least I’m sure the USB one does).
So even if it’s the same mic from the same brand, their purposes are very different, while one does a very good job in home recording and costs more money(XLR), the other is excellent for the person that uses the computer or notebook to talk to friends or speak in online meetings and needs to move the computer around frequently and put all the stuff in a backpack at the same time(USB).
But if audio quality is what you need and money is no problem, and you’re willing to learn all the music related stuff, the XLR would be the clear winner.

byond all..APPLE Matters. I hated the phones and the storage limitations but for music , dont become a “Microsoft expert “ and then find out the problem was you did not use an Apple computer . If a I had spent all the time I spent troubleshooting PC issue with drivers, interfaces and such practicing a guitar or singing , I could have been a Jimi by now.

Hopefully you found an AT3035, they did away with the 3000 series as the AT3035 is now the AT2035. Unfortunately, substituted quality parts with those of lesser quality.
Both the AT3035 (silver chassis/ body) and AT2035 perform the same but the 3035 has a higher degree of quality electronic parts. Note: the 2035 is XLR and not USB.

  • @PaulSebastianM

Putting it simply, an XLR mic has no active electronics in it. It's 100% analog. The voltage generated by the capsule is raw excitement from the environment. It does not inherently have any noise generation, just pure sound, albeit the way it picks up different frequencies depends on the build of the condenser capsule (i.e., it's "quality").
Once you introduce active electronics, the fidelity drops, whether it's noticeable or not, no matter the mic type! It just does. It's physics.
But, with XLR you get the option to choose the active electronics and you are NOT stuck with only one choice of active electronics, which further shapes the audio by frequency pickup curves and internal active electronics noise, and most importantly I guess, these active electronics can even create way worse audio than what the capsule picks up as raw analog voltage (and generally do)!
So, for example, with an XLR mic, you could pair it up with any audio interface and get different levels of audio quality out of the same mic, but with a USB microphone, you're stuck with a fixed preamp built inside the mic.
Lastly, there are condenser capsules that just suck by design and don't sound good no matter which type of preamp you plug them into, separate or built-in, but generally, most capsules are not that bad, even the cheap ones.

Latency shouldn't be a problem in USB mics, since most of them have a jack output built into the mic with almost 0 latency. Also, USB mics should come with software and more features built into the mic itself (like gain knobs, saturation meters, recording modes, etc) than XLR mics.

    • @ragnarockerbunny
      @ragnarockerbunny Рік тому

This heavily depends on the price point. You can get a decent entry level USB mic for a fraction of what an audio interface will cost you but once you hit a price point where audio interfaces become adfordable, USB mics start to fall off.

This video is a definite essential for choosing between a USB and XLR mic. I have the AT2020 (XLR) and it's going on the 3rd year I've had it. I must say that the professional quality I get from it is very impressive for the price i paid for it which was only $100.00 on eBay. Mine came with a black pouch, XLR cord, and mic stand adapter. I tested it on a Digi002 console as well as a Behringer U-PHORIA UMC22 and the sound quality is remarkable from either source.

What problem do you all have with deeper voice ? 😁😁😁😁
Stop believing it has to be a standard or only big deep voices are nice and sexy...
Everybody is making choices of mics...just based on that.
The equipment you use to record must faithfully reproduce your intonations, especially for voice-overs, you actually have more freedom for videos etc.
When I'm working on my intonations for a script, I don't want my microphone or anything else to change my voice! If afterwards I want to make adjustments, it's the post-production work and in particular the EQ.
But if you really care about it, install voice meter banana which is a virtual audio interface, and you would be able to adjust the tone of your voice, reduce the echo and even use a 15-band EQ!!

While I suspect it might not be as good as a dedicated USB mike, when the money becomes available, I can buy an audio interface. In the meantime, I can build up my technique library to make myself better, and get to the point where I can use that interface effectively. And I can get stuff done without having spent money I don't have.

You can definitely use more than one USB microphone on a computer you just have to have the right software for example elgato obs and have the ability to mute said microphone software or hardware-wise
Otherwise people would be naturally stuck with their on-board webcam microphone
The only problem I found with USB based products is bandwidth and Chip controllers
For the Love of all things holy in computers why do we only have one maybe two chips for USBS
When they're simply universal serial bus and they're on everything now and with high end audio video recording not counting offloading to hard drives we need more chip bus on our motherboard I'd say a minimum 4 separate USB chip busts which all can handle the maximum bandwidth of 40 megabits per second for USB "4" at that point and it's all up to having the right hubs with on-off switches

  • @michaelmarshall55

interesting the usb sounds more like a dynamic and had less sibilance . However ALL microphones, unless going to analog tape, go through an AD and the latency is no greater if the AD is in the mike or in the computer. On this point, it seems that logic - the intellectual tool - not the Apple Product, seems to be in short supply in the world of music production…

I think depending on what type of mic you use that *may* be possible? I know that dynamic mics need less voltage to work than a condenser mic, which needs to run through an interface with phantom power (im just going off memory from other videos ive watched, so yeah). Whether or not it can work in a 3.5mm jack, im not sure. I think USB mics have certain converters installed in it for it to work in recording and I think thats what the interface is for. Don't take my word on it completely, I'm still a noob at this.
Also a headphone jack wouldn't cut it, it would need a mic jack, though thats prolly what you meant.

Do you wanr a condeser or dynamic mic and for what purpose with what expectations? And how high is the budget?
Also, in 99% of cases, recording through an audio interface makes a lot more sense than using USB. Especially if it's a good one like an ID4.

Excellent summary. Using a DAW like Reaper with an external ASIO USB Interface makes it very difficult to use anything other than an XLR, either through a mixer or direct into the interface as you are unable to specific the ASIO USB Interface and a seperate USB MIC as an input device as it is effectively its own audio interface. You can use ASIO4ALL to workaround this and this has improved over the years but even with a modern PC, a Yeti USB Mic and the latest ASIO4ALL there is recording latency that causes timing issues. XLR mic is the way to go. Have to say I am very impressed with the USB Mic quality and would be ideal for voice over work where you can happily use the MIC as an input/output device and a pair of PC Speakers. One benefit of a good USB MIC (not the cheapo ones) is that you do not suffer from noise through mixers / cables as you can with analog signals. I know USB devices can suffer from ground loop noise sometimes but generally its easier to get a clean signal from a good USB mic.

what do you think of Shure MV88, i see good reviews about it, but does it suffer from latency issues? damn i don;t even understand what "latency" is really... i need something to record music outside and at home.. casual use

Nice review, I just wanted to add if you are a musician you probably already have or should have a usb audio interface for your guitar or bass or whatever already. If you are a musician with none of the above, you will get more in the long run from a usb interface and xlr mic, because you get a line in to record other instruments directly as well.

Use xlr supply phantom adapter input/output with a 3.5 mm port

xlr supply phantom adapter input/output with a 3.5 mm port will destroy the laptop circuits. You must use something like this The Shure X2u XLR-to-USB Microphone Adapter is a modular accessory that connects any XLR microphone to your computer cost about $99 though. or using Focusrite Scarlett Solo USB Audio Interface (Gen 3) for $119. Just too much stuff to lug around with a laptop. Just get AT2020 straight forward that has USB connector or the Blue Yeti. The Elgato Wave 3 is compact however not solidly built and the specs not as good.

@@alyssascott9754 I have the blue yeti with otg, and also have a dynamic/Scarlett solo. But both of them sound amplified even on 0 gain when connected to my S20+ using star maker app to sing, if I record outside the app it sounds fine. Could this be a software or hardware issue. Because when trying on my LG v30 it sounds leveled but not nearly as clear as the voice should be. I'm confused and feel disappointed that I'm spending so much with no results.

What if you just want to play an instrument into the USB mic on a zoom session without recording whilst also using a headphone set which I sing through at the same time? Would this work, anyone?!

    • @Goldern
      @Goldern 3 роки тому

The at2020 usb+ should pick up the voice and the sound of the instrument, if you need to hear the sound of your voice, it has a headphone output (unsure if it also output the sound of the computer though) that you can plug your headphones and hear without delay, or you can go into the windows audio configuration and find the option in the recording devices to hear what’s being feed to the mic (but that’s going to add delay and the instrument sound would be doubled).
You can only use one mic to record, it’s impossible to use one usb mic and one 3.5mm(P2) headset mic, even if you opt out for the XLR version you’d need two mics (one for voice and one for instrument) and an audio interface with at least two XLR inputs (provided that your instrument does not have a 6.3mm(P10) output jack), or one XLR mic and an audio interface with one XLR port and one P10 input if your instrument does have a P10 output.
But anyway, you should point your instrument and sing to the same mic, that way you’ll be able to capture both sounds without expending lots of money, but at the same time if you’re planning to work with audio, the extra cash spent on XLR audio interface and the XLR mic would make more sense as you’d be able to record in a different track than your voice and treat them with different sets of effects in your music editing software.
      Cheers

    • @LeSaff
      @LeSaff 2 роки тому

I would do exactly the opposite !
It's exactly like a gamer who builds his desktop and puts all his money into the graphics card. If the motherboard and the power supply are not powerful enough to support the card, then it will be restricted and the player will finally say that this card is not that good and that he is very disappointed when the problem is elsewhere.
Here are just a few considerations to take into account:
      - If you opt for XLR, you need a microphone, audio interface and XLR cable that are consistent. If you buy a poor quality cable, the sound will not be good. Worse, after 30 minutes of use, it will start to create distortions in the voice.
If you're buying a $600 mic and a $150 audio interface, like the gamer with his graphics card, you're going to be disappointed with the mic. Some say the micro USB generates noise...some audio interfaces do too.
      - For USB microphones, the technology evolves quickly with the finesse of circuit engraving. It is therefore always necessary to turn to recent microphones (and therefore not the blue yeti which is 10 years old) such as the SE Electronics Neom.
      - If you take an XLR microphone around 150€, an average XLR cable and an audio interface also in this price range such as the Behringer UMC 22, the Steinberg C12 or the Scarlett 2i2 (which is not better but cost twice the price! The good scarlett products start with the 4i4 audio interface), you will have little difference with a good USB, especially if you are familiar with your DAW and VST plugins. Plus with Voicemeter Banana, you can adjust the bass of your voice, dampen room echo, and use a 15-band EQ. With Krisp, reduce outside noise.
On the other hand, if you want to go beyond, with microphones like the Sennheiser 416, TLM Neumann and interfaces like the Apollo and have the right recording conditions of course, because these microphones require specific environments, then no micro USB to date will deliver the same quality. But if it's to take the cheap, take the USB without hesitation.

Hi Nicole, so if you wish to use a mic with your Yamaha interface you will require another XLR microphone. The At2020 Usb+ is strictly a USB microphone. Hope this helps!
