  • The Barbados Government has stepped in to address cries from some sections of the public to close access to that area of Brighton Beach, off Spring Garden, St Michael popularly known as The Hot Pot.
The state’s intervention followed pleas from several Barbadians including the father of the latest person to die from drowning while bathing in the vicinity of the popular bathing spot. A “danger” sign has existed for sometime now, warning members of the public “Do not swim here - strong current.”

Well, I certainly understand why the family of the latest drowning victim has asked for the Pot to be closed, but I can also understand why these folks disagree. That sign warning about the dangers of swimming in the area was erected for a reason. It's because it has a history of being a spot where even strong swimmers can get into serious trouble. Now, maybe these folks are right. Maybe it's only dangerous if you venture beyond the area of relative calm that surrounds the pipes. But, even if that's the case, shouldn't we try to do something more in order to prevent further tragedies? I'm no expert, but I'll just repeat here what I've always heard experts say about getting caught in riptide conditions. If you find yourself being pulled away from the shoreline, and the pull is so strong that you are having great difficulty in attempting to swim back in, it's time to start swimming parallel to the shore as opposed to back in. The reason being that if you try to fight the current, you risk fighting a losing battle, tiring yourself out and ultimately drowning. So, the idea is to swim out of the current by moving parallel to the shoreline. Once clear of the current, it will then be much easier to swim back to shore.

As far as I understand, "The Hot Pot" is safe, but those who can't swim or are not strong swimmers go further out from the pot into the sea, and suddenly, there's a sudden drop. That part of the ocean is deep, then they realise they're out of their depths and struggle to return. Once you leave The Pot its deep sea. I might be wrong, but that's what I was told.
Sorry to hear of their loss; may he Rest in Peace with the angels.

I was very sad to hear a young man lost his life in this manner🙏🏽
I think all beaches should have some type of safety measures, a life guard, a small boat, safety ring and 300 ft of nylon rope, in case you have to swim out to save some one.
All children should learn to swim...and life saving techniques should be taught and shown on tv regularly.
If the ‘Hot Pot’ has dangerous waves beyond the reef, then this part should be cordoned off.
I don’t think the hot-pot should be closed at all.
Everyone ultimate should take care of them selves and not take risks!!
    Be safe, stay Blessed🙏🏽

Don’t close the Hot Pot, but put a lifeguard. Having one by Brandon’s alone is too far. Plus, as the people said, it’s swimming beyond the warm pool that’s the problem.

there is no need to close off the hot pot area,... as most of the people interviewed and myself can confirm no one drowns at the hot pot,.. it is an embarrassment that of such a small island youngster and some adults do not know how to swim. it should be a natural part of our existence to be able to enter the ocean and be a part of it. teach the children to swim,...

My condolences goes out to the family of the unfortunate soul that have drowned at that beach. My take is that, 'THE HOT POT' isn't the problem. For years the name 'THE HOT POT' is a very popular title given to that area on that beach, so popular that we Bjans don't even mention the name of the beach that it's located on, as long as we say or hear anyone say "we're going to THE HOT POT" automatically you can identify which beach they're going to, mind you, that's not the name of the beach, it's just a section of the beach where the hot water from the Light and Power Company substation runoff into the sea and there's nothing dangerous about that section of the beach at all. I can say it with confidence because if that was the case many of us that swim in that small section we call 'THE HOT POT' would be drowning there on a regular basis over the years which would deem a Caution Sign to be erected there long ago. Nothing is wrong with putting up a notice of caution sign for swimmers to be aware of strong currents in an area of a beach, because all beaches have strong currents at some time especially when there is bad weather in the Atlantic Ocean. I do feel though that there's more to 'That Sign', and we will see as time unfolds.

The hot pot will used as a commercial industry. The sea is free and the terminus help people but Government or medical professionals will use the hot pot to bring in money.
    Its all about money....
