Fun fact: This game is the namesake for the Yugioh card "King of Destruction Xexex", and the fighter you play as and its powerups are the origin for the cards "Flint Lock", "Flint", and "Flint Missile"
@@JohnDoe-fi9li Nope, all the shmup inspired cards are explicitly taken from Konami properties, back when Konami made games. There's a bunch of things like that all throughout Yugioh.
@@shakisyaboi991 They make maybe a game a year if that. It's not important for them, they make Pachinko machines and mobage trash. And the games that are games invariably suck and miss the point of their franchises, see the Contra game where your weapons overheated if you held down the trigger..
XEXEX is essentially Konami 'borrowing' ideas from Irem's R-Type series, mimicing it's force and charge system. Though years later, Irem 'borrowed' back by adding the player craft Mad Forest, which mimics the XEXEX fighter's arsenal, into the R-Type Final roster.
@@WaywardRobot That's not true. You might be thinking about Treasure, which was founded by ex Konami staffs. Irem is one of those really old game companies. It was founded a decade before Capcom, by the same person who would later create Capcom.
Well not only that it also borrows the tentacle mechanic from Irem’s X-Multiply and pretty much fuses both R-Type’s and X-Multiply’s mechanics into one with a flavor of some Gradius Stage design? I could be wrong on that last part
Aaawwww.....XEXEX! Loved playing that game on the GBA Gradius compilation. That Scene 3 Dragon Boss was epic! And I just love the charged tentacle attack.
Also, why does it always feel like dragons in older video games are complete pushovers? Then again, it doesn't even look like the dragon was the bad guy. It looks like he just wanted you to destroy whatever was on his head, since it look like he flew off once you destroyed it instead of being killed. That's actually kind of Awesome Peoria.
I liked it when the loops would have a twist. I remember a game where you were sent back in time but had to redo a few stages but a couple of the bosses had different patterns or were completely different because apparently you were actually helping clear the way for your other self or something i forget how it worked exactly.
The main villain is so cringy. Like "Jojo's Bizarre Adventure" level cringy. & what's with the ending credits animation? I do love the 'lightning tentacles' power attack, though.

Ah! Nice to know. I had a few of those to go with my Vic Vipers a good while back. Though they were just like generic shmup inspired cards.

Funny, because IIRC, Irem was created by ex-Konami staff.

I love the designs for a lot of these bosses, but I especially like the dragon. Good thumbnail choice, that would be a cool boss to have on a shirt

This game in mind blowing for 1991. Very challenging even if not in the same vien as Gradius III challenging.

Can you do Yu-Gi-Oh!: Duelist of the Roses?
Why does almost every Japanese SHMUP has to have a grotesque eldritch abomination as a final boss?!
