It's amazing the number of people with serious mental health issues I've heard of who have said that Fromsoft games have really helped them or even saved their lives. I think it's partially to do with the compelling feeling of struggling and _overcoming_ challenges which teaches those of us who have struggled with depression and anxiety that our struggle is not in vain, and that to overcome _is_ possible. Fromsoft games want you to succeed, they believe in you, and they will cheer you along every tiny victory at a time. They offer a level of support and encouragement that is practically unheard of for those who have ever sought help with mental health. EDIT: also dogs! Dogs will love you unconditionally and totally, and when you have depression it's important to be reminded that you are deserving of love.

It's kind of taken a bit for me but elden ring is helping bring me out of the dark place I was in. And helping me find my love for video games again. I don’t usually comment on videos but I just wanted to say that I recently found your videos on UA-cam and I’ve been binge watching them and the lore on Elden ring and I just got to this video and it just broke me down and made me cry at the fact that I felt very similar to you in a lot of ways and our lives had completely different courses but it really just hit me about your childhood and what video games were like back then and trying to be a content creator was treated like, especially the fact that I am just now in life feeling OK to start doing that for myself and I also just turn 27 so thank you for this video it was something that I didn’t know I needed to hear.

I'm really good at Square Enix games but haven't had the guts to try the Dark Souls series but the lore of fromsoft games give me life.

As a guy who is a huge advocate for men talking about their mental health, I salute you and thank you for sharing your story. When I was a teenager back in the early 00's (I'm 32 now btw) I was bullied every single day at school for being fat or for being the only kid in school to have facial hair. Being bullied for being fat basically put me in the mindset of not eating, so every single lunch my mum made for me I would hide in my bedroom until it went off then I would bin it. This happened for years. Then, when I was about 15, there was a thing that happened where I had to grow up super quick because we were in debt so badly that our house was about to be repossessed. During this time, I was definitely suicidal, to the point where I wrote the note, but I couldn't go through with it so I burnt the note. I then completely lost myself in Metal Gear Solid 2; put so much time into it that it got me through all of that. Gave me something else to focus on while everything around me was crashing while I was trying to simply understand it, let alone try to fix it. Everything I went through spawned my depression which I still suffer from, but I've got much better control of my faculties and I'm in a good place.
So yeah, speaking from first hand experience, I really resonated with your story and I'm so glad you managed to work through it all. And to anyone reading this in a similar position; you're not alone. Do not be afraid to ask for help. You may feel like it's the end, but you can change that and I implore you to think about your actions and try to find something to work towards. Sometimes it seems nigh on impossible, but it's situations like that which help you understand just how strong you are. Don't let anyone tell you you're worthless, because you're absolutely not.

Thanks for sharing man. Video games can definitely have that effect on people. I have a similar story to yours, and without giving too much details, I too got to a point where I wanted to end it all.
At the time, I was playing World of Warcraft and told myself I want to at least have the super rare dropped mount, Invincible, before I go, as that was the mount I really wanted the most.
At this point, that raid tier was already soloable, and with my four max level and geared toons, I started farming the boss on a weekly basis. This took years and multiple expansions, and became something to look forward to every week, and without realizing it, I actually continued living and stopped thinking about that dark thought.
And by the time I -finally- got the mount, I was beyond ecstatic that I didn't even remember why I started farming it, until I had to share this exact story to another friend who was also going through a dark place.
Up to now, video games, along with therapy, have helped me keep my mental health positive. I am by no means a popular UA-camr, not even close, but doing my video game recreations of my favorite video games have the same effect as farming that Invincible mount, and keeps me happy and going. 😁
Glad to know you're out of your dark place and now enjoy life! I've been seeing your content and enjoy watching it, but this story just made me a full fledged follower of yours. 🙏

I feel you, man. I went through some things very similar to what you experienced and I would like to reinforce what you said:
Guys, if you're going through some dark times now, please know that it really can get better. Please don't give up. Please try to do what's best for yourselves. You can do it!

Fellow Missourian here. So glad you shared your story. Seems similar to my experiences in life. Hearing what you have been through and hearing you say how “alone” you felt reminded me I had those same feelings.
You should know you are never alone, and neither is anyone else out there feeling the same way.
I’ve had a few games save my life
Super Mario 64 helped me through a childhood molestation, from a nun of all people.
Mass Effect 2 helped me through college when I felt most lost and confused
Breath of The Wild kept me from ending my life after a deployment to Afghanistan
Now it’s 2022 and I’ve been working with Covid patients for two years, I’m so burnt out. My PTSD was through the roof. Then elden ring came along. Connecting with the community and other players, exploring this world together has been amazing.

People think I'm exaggerating when I tell them about DkS1's effect on how I view life, specifically it's challenges, and how it's responsible for my success today. I won't bore everyone with the details but I'm summation; I learned that you only go hollow when you stop trying. That everytime you bang your head against that wall that seems impossible to break through... each attempt makes the goal seem a little less impossible. Until you inevitably succeed. It might take 100 tries, but failure is baked into the experience.. not a set back.

I had a similarly shattering break up in my early 20s. Took me years to bounce back from being broke and sad and angry. Never stop fighting man, you gotta bounce back :) to totally misquote the cowboy in Mulholland drive, a man's attitude determines the way his life will end up or whatever.
Head up no matter what and NEVER AGAIN.

Man, I really feel this. I am at the beginning of starting my own business at 30 years old doing something I love. If I looked back 5 months ago, I would have never imagined any of this would have been part of my life. A business, a sense of purpose, connections, growth, and just things I accepted I wouldn't experience. Between playing this game and building my business at the same time, I have never felt more inspired and confident to take on challenges. I really love seeing and hearing stories like yours knowing I'm not the only one out there that was influenced by this game in a significant way. Thank you for sharing!!

I'm so glad you pushed through all the hard times! I know how it is, and fromsoft games are actually some of the best when it comes to helping ppl with depression! They give you challenge after challenge that you will always have everything you need to overcome them, and that's a powerful thing for those who feel hopeless and stuck. And the addictive lore is a great distraction, too!
Keep up the excellent videos! I look forward to each one!

Good for you bro! This reminds me of my experience with Dark Souls, it was just a videogame but the challenging gameplay and lack of direction did wonders for my depression, it made me start making parallels to my real life, it also reminded me that the world is full of mystery and beauty, even in this corporate dystopia, funny a videogame can do that, people think it sounds silly that a videogame can change your outlook on life but Dark Souls was not an ordinary game, esp for the time it came out, it resurrected my love for gaming in a landscape full of coca cola videogames. I’m happy for your success, keep doing your thing man.

Thank you for being so honest and sharing your life's journey with the world. This is why i've played every from soft games since Demon Souls. It always gave me a sense of purpose in a world where you need centuries to figure yourself out and no one helps you besides some special people that cross your path from time to time.
Souls Games resemble many painful aspects of life but helps you to cope with the outer circumstances and even connects you with a community of awesome people that also had to deal with hardships in their own life.
I just subscribed and wanted to wish you all the best for your future :)

I was in a similar boat. I was depressed and suffering from a major eating and caffeine abuse disorder. Elden ring gave me the little bit of purpose I needed to keep going. It inspired me to read berserk and that gave me even more inspiration to keep struggling on. And I’m happy to say I’m the happiest I’ve ever been. Took back my health, quit smoking, and drinking too. Your content is really good and I’ll be around to support you :)

Happy to hear you’re doing better now. This game has gotten me through some tough times as well. Video games are a big way for me to connect with my friends since graduating college. A lot of them have been slipping away to new consoles and moving in with their lives and families. I had to find a solo game that i could enjoy on my own time and this has been it for me. Really enjoy your lore videos. Keep up the hard work!
