Pulled a 225 cat out of frozen water with the d9, had to cork screw it out

I'm not too smart, but why didn't they just hook those other two excavators up to the assend of that Cat, put it neutral, and pull it out the way it came in? Looked like they were trying to build an artificial island around it or something, and it just got more bogged in the longer they farted with it.
