Whether you like it or not slavery was once legal so you can't retrospectively claim that people who made money during the transatlantic slave trade were criminals and that any money that can be traced back to them should be regarded as the proceeds of crime. Plus there are other things that used to be legal that are now regarded as abhorrent such as torturing people and burning them at the stake simply for being of a particular religion. Would you advocate trying to find out if there are people and institutions today who have some money that could be traced back to selling racks and thumbscrews in the 16th century and if so would you demand that it should also be confiscated as being the proceeds of crime?

It's not really a debating point for a UA-cam Comments page, but the Terry Jones (of Python fame) did an excellent series called Medieval Lives which offered a fresh perspective on this period. God knows who gets credit for Algebra. I suspect it's something with roots in Babylon, Greece, Persia, and India. I seem to remember that Omar Khayyam might have had a hand in there too. It just occurred that Alcohol might be an Arab derived word too, in which case I may have more to thank them for than I thought.
