  • Worn by a slave - This is a genuine and original 19th century African Slave Ankle Bangle which was worn by a real person (a slave) In fact, the likelihood is that it was worn by several people over a number of generations.
It’s called an Omani Slave Bangle and is the sort worn by slaves owned by slave dealers during the East Africa Slave Trade era. This trade operated throughout East and central Africa up until Dr David Livingstone, the Victorian missionary brought the trade to an end by having his stories (of the slave trade he’d witnessed in Africa) and letters published in the New York Herald by Henry Stanley - the public you see in America , Britain and Europe were horrified by what they learnt in the newspaper articles. The general public assumed that the slave trade had been brought to an end by the British when they abolished it first in 1807 (In Britain) and then in the early 1830’s around the rest of the empire.
The British purchased the freedom for all slaves in the British Empire. A debt incurred which was only finally paid off in 2015
Due to international public pressure, the British forced the Sultan of Zanzibar to close down his slave markets (Zanzibar being the hub and trading centre of the East Africa Slave Trade) and so because of Dr David Livingstone and the journalist Henry Stanley (plus the New York Herald) the trade was finally closed down in the early 1870’s
Don’t think that this act, plus the earlier British abolition of slavery brought the industry to an end…today, as we speak, it is estimated that 40 million people around the world live in slavery.

I should have said that Dr David Livingstone had no Formal Education. He started working in the local mill around the age of 10 and did not go to school, but he did have some basis lessons, which were provided by the mill owner…However, these were only available after he’d completed an up to 12 hour work shift on the factory floor…most child workers were too exhausted to take up these free lessons. There were also books at home which he devoured once he had learnt to read

Africa Blood and Guts 1966 is a great documentary to watch if you want to see what happened to the descendants of the slave traders in Zanzibar when the British left.

I find the whole slave trade thing so depressing and a horrible part of history, which still prevails today in attitudes toward others. Fascinating vlog btw. 😎

Thanks Damian and I agree. I can’t imagine it’ll even be eradicated, but I hope those with the power to do so will start to address the problem as it is today

That's history for sure. West African slaves were smuggled into the USA, shamefully, right up until our Civil War. ^5 to the Royal Navy for inderdicting some of the trade! That ankle bracelet needs to go somewhere the story can be told. Maybe it'll help make a dent in the slave trade still going on in some parts of the world.

The fact that 40 million are enslaved today, but it’s brushed over is something that future generations will ask questions about I think

On the eve of Central Digitalized Currency, it might be more relevant to examine to correlation between taxation and personal freedom.

How ridiculous. It’s history and we should explore history, listen to it, learn from it and improve. There are 40 million people living in slavery today, but you probably think it’s best not to speak about such things

@@victor_rybin Not true. There are still slaves in North Africa. Even slave markets. Of course the Barbary Pirates (slave traders) were from North Africa too. Shouldn’t we be trying to free the 40 million in slavery today?
