This is the story of the birth of modern chess - when the possibilities of chess as an art, a science and a sport all converged.
The point of convergence was a young boy from Louisiana named Paul Morphy. At a time when America was seen as a backwoods nation with little cultural history and even less intellectual impetus, at a time when chess was considered the exclusive property of a few European countries, at a time when the game was played successfully by a handful of men wizened by years, Paul Morphy, in the brief span of 19 months and with seemingly little effort, defeated conclusively every player he met.
While today few non chess players even know his name, he was one of the most famous celebrities of his time and within the hallowed halls of the chess playing community he is considered by some as the greatest chess player of all time.
But this diminutive, unassuming boy rose to fame almost out of nowhere and once he secured his place in history, he retired back into that hazy unknown, shunning the public eye, never again to play serious chess. Not only was he one of great practitioners of the game, but also one of it's greatest enigmas. He's been given the sobriquet, The Pride and Sorrow of Chess.

As usual, I won't make such silly mistake again.
I disagree that there was no pressure in that game though. Black has a passed c pawn. Just waiting around would eventually lose the game. So White must find a way to actually make progress fast.

As a chess game approaches the endgame, any move other than a blunder move tends to be a better move.

11:37 "Queen to f2"😂😂😂😂😂😂
Lovely video as always agadmator and very entertainingly explained!... As a chess hacker (i.e. useless but love watching the game!) I can fully empathise with Lowenthal as his eyebrows raised and his eyes lit up at the prospect of that pawn on the cusp of queening, your eyes and mind focus on nothing else...and then your opponent takes your pawn, checks you, picks up the pawn on the brink of being crowned...and your whole bubble bursts spectacularly!! hahahaha...
*Makes the only losing move*
"Sometimes my genius...it's almost frightening"
00:12 Your monitor is very bright!
09:39 Black just played Ke7. White can now promote f8=Q, then Qh8+, then Qxg7, with a passed g-pawn.
At least Johann did not lose!
My favorite way to win looks like Qd8+ and sacrificing the queen, because you promote with check after Kxd8 and you also win black’s g pawn with check, then you can promote a 2nd queen after exchanging off the black queen.
That "en passant" 5:22 was smooth
“Worst move in chess history”.
Me- haha hold my beer.
Morphy's devasted ... wondering what went wrong ... then: Qh8. "Ah, the world's not such a bad place after all."
An addendum to my previous comment of blocking the black's queen check with the bishop... Sure, queen can take G4 with check, but if you move King to F2 that would not only block black's now freed pass pawn but also blocks queen to E2 check... king would take the queen. Sacrificing the bishop would be worth it to save the pawn about to be a queen on F7. It all depends on that. Sacrificing the bishop would be your only chance of recovery. He might not take the bait, and take with the pawn or queen, but if he did, the game would be over, because Queen to E8 CHECK gains the second queen, and one lone queen working alone cannot put a king in checkmate (stalemate maybe).
I think i have solid claims to the worst position ever played by allowing my queen to be captured with a pawn by accident.
I know it's actually an era-appropriate hairstyle, but dang does it look like Morphy is rockin' out to some block rockin' beats
"Congrats on playing ANY move"
ANY move??? Look how talented I've become
"ANY move that does not blunder the g6 pawn"
Well...
What surprised me most in this game is not Lowehthal's blunder but that Morphy agreed to a draw. Lowenthal must have already been destroyed mentally and who is to say that he won't blunder another piece?
Worst move ever played? That’s me every time the endgame starts! Great analysis as usual and it’s great to have you back!
10:04 Thumbnail if anyone is looking for this
I think what added to the shock value is that Löwenthal was playing an excellent chess game up until that move (against Morphy no less). So that move looks even more ridiculous and hard to explain in the context of the game.
11:35 ...so you won't be enjoying any extra queens.
