    No-one NEEDS the Brompton tool kit, but it is nicely designed and fits perfectly in your Brompton. Don't buy it, ask someone to get it for you as a present instead.

    The bike shop was very keen to sell me one of these when i picked up my new Brompton. I bought it, went home and kinda wished I'd made up my own version for a lot cheaper. Then i realised the bike shop should've really sold me a pump as well, and maybe an inner tube, as it's only half a repair kit without these. Thank you for an honest video, like you I bought it once, but maybe never again.

    I wouldn't be without the Brompton tool kit. I've used it several times monthly. I have a Brompton metro bag and a larger Brompton borough bag that I carry essentials in and actually don't have room for other tools, so I'm glad Brompton tools fit in the frame. I also have a tire inner tube inside the other part of the frame. Wouldn't be without any of them.
    I also don't own any other tool kits.

      @@CycleEveryday I'm paranoid sometimes thinking a screw might be loose on my bike, so i always check mostly every screw before my next ride 😁. And having the Brompton tool kit makes it so easy to check 👍

      It's so satisfying the snug design and the magnet, it's worth it for aesthetics alone, but it's more than that. I overtightened an easy-wheel with a cheap hex key and thought I might have a catasrtophic situation, but thankfully the Brompton keys are high quality so I managed to get the damaged bolt off again. Phew!

      @CycleEveryday Ha! Me too.
      Yesterday I stopped and examined my Brommie FOUR TIMES, trying to identify a tiny rattle. "Rattle?" Well, not really. It was more of a "tickety-tick" noise that I couldn't hear at all when cars were passing. All the same, I just NEEDED to know what it was so I could decide if something needed attention....
      I found out what it was after getting home and riding up and down the front path for ten minutes. It was coming from a loose buckle on my Brompton S-Bag. The two parts of the plastic buckle were clashing together from vibration because they were not tightened and under tension... and that was because the bag was pretty much empty.
      Now I think about it, I am amazed I noticed such a tiny noise... but it is true. When riding any bike you get hypersensitive to any new noises.

    I bought 8, 10 & 15mm combination spanners (the 15 mm spanner being a ‘stubby’ ie short, for easy storage) - £13; a topeak 9 mini bike tool with all the necessary Allen keys and screw driver heads, for £ 13; some park-tool tyre levers and puncture repair kit - £6.
    The tyre levers and repair kit are stored in the front part of the frame top tube (taped in place to stop them falling out!) and the tools are in a roll pack in my drink bottle bag on the handlebars.
    I think the tools are more versatile than the Brompton one, for example the spanners are combination (open-ended and ring spanners), which I find more useful and easier to use; and the topeak mini tool is really good quality. I also have a rolled up spare inner tube in the long part of the top tube. The tube is folded up and wrapped in clingfilm length ways, so slides out easily.
    So for less than half the price of the Brompton tool, I think I have a better tool kit 😊!

    Watched again. I live in New York City so I could jump on the subway if I needed to but I just started carrying a few hex keys and a wrench because I just got a new saddle, pentaclip, grips and lights so I’ve been using my tools a lot. Everything still needs a little adjustment still. I like tools.
    I’ve blew up my tire, and had about two flats. I’m getting better at changing. The first one took the long time so hard to get the tire off but even the bike mechanic thought it was hard getting it off so that made me feel better. So I’m thinking about getting the Brompton toolkit again. The cost is what makes it hard to decide.

    Thank you for the video. Helped me put my kit back together after putting on a new tube. Was really stumped. I too thought the kit was an extravagance but have absolutely no other tools. Didn’t know about the ratchet until your video. Nothin like a great ratchet! Thanks again. I do feel appreciative of its attributes and secure having it and a spare tube along without having to think about it.
    I’m going with gratitude. And hope. That I’ll never need it. lolll
    I’m looking for a lifetime small torque thingy to put in the first aide kit.

    Thanks, that's all good to know. I have a 1995 Brompton into which this toolkit would not fit. So ideas on alternatives are welcome. I have a crazy idea of cycling the C2C, so I may just need a comprehensive kit. In case I need to adjust a handgrip or something. I might just see if I can cobble my own kit together if it doesn't weigh too much 😁
    I do have an old 'Cool Tool' from back in the 90s which looks to do most of what is needed. Might make that the core of my DIY offering.

    good vid, well done, watched a few vids on this, no one mentions you can clip the spanner into the toolkit and use it in your hand for more leverage when using the geared hex ratchet. if you look on the spanner there is a groove where it fits back into the tool kit. you then slide the sleeve back over it. its all well designed as you'd expect from Brompton, you get drawn into the design and sliding it into the frame, but I think you're money is better spent elsewhere. put you're own kit together cheaply, which is more satisfying. you'll end up buying most the tools anyway, if you don't own them already.

    I purchased a 2nd hand Brompton in early March 2024. It was a bargain as it was highly specced ARCC. Imagine my delight that I noticed 3 months later it had the cylindrical shaped tool kit. Ironically the spanner does not fit the nuts on the front wheel as it contains the ARCC built wheel which has smaller nuts.

    From you video it is clear that your generic wrenches do not fit the bolts etc snuggly and as a result may damage the fittings. The Tern Tool 2.0 would probably be a reason and cheaper alternative, although you still need to add a few things.

    • @CycleEveryday
      @CycleEveryday Рік тому

      The generic wrenches are as snug as the actual Brompton Took kit. There is some slight play in both and I haven’t had any problems using the generic with damage over the past through years. K no it heard of the tern tool kit which I believe is one made by Tern bikes? 👍

    Do you need a Brompton at all? But it is nice to have! I have used my Toolkit, though not often, and I also have an expensive insurance on my car, though I do hope not to need it ever! But if in need the "outside cover" may give a good, extra handle for more power! Finn. Denmark 😁 I don't have a bag hanging from my saddle.

      Yes you are right that it won’t cover everything that you need for all repairs, but don’t think any toolkit would. No toolkit would include a Crank Pusher or something like that. Think it’s more designed for repairs on the road and everyday adjustments 👍
