I’m surprised you haven’t brought a “cane guy” on the channel to talk about how canes are perfect weapons. “I can take this anywhere. Even on a airplane!”
Carrying a cane around, when you don't actually need it for walking support is quite annoying. I inherited a really cool cane with a sculptured metal head of a bird of prey as grip as a young man, and I tried making a habit of carrying it with me. It is annoying.
philipshead is smooth, a pointy end, goes in and out clean flathead tip is much wider and more blunt, some even have roughened edge for additional grip, it is more likely to get jammed in joint/bone/tissues
There's this track on Wu Tang's first album where Method Man and Raekwon are trying to one up each other with crazy torture ideas. This video reminded me of that. Just a bunch of grown ass men talking about how they're going to use household tools in a fight. Never change, man.
I just want to add that you can bring a screwdriver on a plane if it’s under 7” at least last time I flew. This was my weapon of choice. And great just to have on you as a tool.
I have been thinking about screwdrivers so many times when i train with the rondel, a long flathead would be perfect then you can stab, you can hook, you can grapple.
Screwdriver, linesman pliers, lots of tools. When I worked downtown I would carry a tool in my pocket when walking to and from my car. People regularly got maced, jumped, assaulted. The problem is, in Canada, thats still considered a weapon. Even used in self defense thats a huge problem.
Here in NYS if an attacker presents any form of weapon for the sake of committing extreme bodily harm to you, you are within your rights to match whatever level of force needed to preserve your own safety upto AND including lethal force within the context of self defense. Translation: If a guy pulls a knife on you in the NYC subway, you are allowed under penal law to defend yourself upwards of taking the attacker's life to save yourself. Problem is a LOT of my fellow New Yorkers don't even know this. Assault laws in NYS are super strict and many people assume even protecting yourself can land you in legal trouble...which is far from true. I'm in private security (body guard, bouncing, etc) so knowing these laws and statutes is part of the gig. I need to know what level of force I can use legal if my life is in danger, and I believe ALL New Yorkers need to know this. Needless to say things are pretty bad here in terms of violence, so being armed with such knowledge is vital. I saw a poor guy get his arms and hands slashed by an attacker because he refused to fight back. He just tried to mitigate the damage, not counter attack...because I assume he thought if he hurt his attacker HE'D be the one to get arrested.
My guy I’m from the Bronx castle 🏰 hill and park Chester 6 train nyc all day ex military and law enforcement NYPD 11 years. I workers all over nyc night clubs self defense only works in nyc on couple of variables 1 you just retreat runaway first and there better be a witness that see the attacker running after your or on camera 📷 2 does the attacker have a weapon on there person or showing it or using physical threats or verbaling say I’m going to cause harm 3 you better not have any form of training or be younger and much larger human being So if 5,7 150 lbs man’s attacks 6,5 295lbs man with his bar hands and the bigger guys kills the smaller guy the courts and the law may not be In Your favor also you need be careful On call 911 and speaking to the NYPD when the self defense happens and form of admission can and will always used aginst you under stand the laws not what some may think 🤔 in the moment of you police 👮♂️ discretion doesn’t always help when there’s quotas involved My advice is to always record if anything 2 run away and call the police 👮♂️. And again never speak to them cuz if there investagitnting N assault or homicide that took place they can arrest you. So again be careful don’t be a tough guy in nyc
The Philips head genuinely gives you, even if it is just subconsciously the feeling that you're holding something designed to go into things. A flathead will go just as deep, and honestly kind of scares me more from the idea of it being dragged across whatever it happens to get stuck against but it just looks like a spear point. Also still looking forward to that eventual hammer instructional.
"I can put this in my pocket safely; I won't hurt myself with it... ... terribly" the word "terribly" is doing a lot of work there Mike, a lot of us have tripped/sat/bent over with the screwdriver we were 'only going to put in our pocket for a second between tasks' and ended up bleeding from the side :)
I actually would like to see a loaded fist video. My criticism of his kubaton take has always been that if you get one with a good grip it's just a loaded fist, but you can do more damaging hammerstrikes as well. So the real question is just, "Is a loaded fist better than an empty one?", and he never addresses that question.
i think its actually a good idea, in the sense that you can trow them at the face of the enemy without much training and make a decent entrance or opening, its like the "shirt to the face" thing thats common in street fighting
Rolls of quarters are good for shadow boxing with a little weight and less trouble than putting on gloves. While it certainly would cause more damage than a naked hand, remember your bones are between the metal cylinder and the hard bony surface you're striking, so it would also cause more damage to your hand. Maybe less strikes but more powerful? There might be a case to be made for that in some specific circumstances.
@@dacedebeer2697 - The alternative way to consider it is that you have a metal cylinder supporting the bones of your hand and allowing the energy to transfer directly through and into the fleshy padding of your palm. Lots of styles of fighting gloves have a roll of padding for you to grip. So presumably there is some value in having no gap in the fist.
In the late medieval period there was this thing called a rondel dagger. Essentially it was a 12 inch spike and lots of people found it to be seriously useful. But it basically was a sharpened screwdriver, so yeah nothin knew under the sun dude it's a solid self defense choice
Also in the Middle Ages there was a weapon called a "Martial Fork". An oversized (Sometimes very greatly oversized) fork that was quite !Earhart. I once saw one in Idaho, chromed and gigantic at a Crossroads standing vertical announcing it was a fork in the road.
People underapreciate slashing, it's a lot harder to defend, no need to aim precisely, doesn't leave you as exposed as a thrust, easier to chain multiple slashes, acts as both ofense and defense, less likely to seriously injure the other person.
Our oldest Shi Fu carried a screw driver. He trained right up to just before he passed away at 94. Always fun to train with. In his 80's after his wife passed he spent a lot of time travelling and doing crazy stuff. He travelled up the Congo with a single guide. He travelled in many obscure places and spent time with the natives. While in Brazil he was acosted by a group of thugs. He fended them off with that screw driver. Crazy old man and a great role model for when I'm old.
My friends father is a Tai Chi master and the screwdriver has always been his go-to when carrying a “tool” in NYC since the 70’s. I once saw home put one through the skin of car door and penetrate all the way through the inside door liner
The pointed Kubotan with hand-grip is very similar to the screwdriver. I have found that the pointed Kubotan also is very effective for self defence application.
Dick Marcinko talks about the lethality of a screwdriver in one of his books. He said that the more dangerous and lethal attacks were penetrating as opposed to slashes. Of course in the book he sharpened it. I was also impressed with how easy it was to switch grips with a screwdriver handle. As always, love your content. (Even tho I'm an Aikido guy. lol)
I prefer the torx bit drivers, the impact really brightens up their day with the 🌞 pattern. But #2 philips for a stronger metal piece is better than #1 size.
The Phillips concentrates the impact better than the flat head. Screwdrivers are excellent. We have been training them here for a long time. Easy to obtain, cheap, devastating, can take unreal punishment without breaking and disposable. You could go to any country in the world and pick one up easily. The same couldn't be said for the knife. Great all around tool.
"If you're in a country where you can't carry any weapons, this is okay" Pathetically, in a lot of countries like Britain or Australia even tools like screwdrivers are considered illegal offensive weapons unless you're specifically on the job at a job that necessitates using one.
My grandmother second husband carried a 12 inch flat head sharpened screwdriver on his belt. He was a guy born at the beggining of the 1900s, very different and violent times here. He was more than 90 years old and still carried it, claiming it was for self defense and it was no illegal to carry a screwdriver. He knew what he was doing.
Awesome video Mike! I would note though that some places you could not carry this. I live in the UK, where it would be legal if you had a legitimate reason for carrying it (e.g. for work), but if you were carrying it for the purpose of self defence, it would be illegal.
I had an EMT tell me that a screwdriver wound is one of the worst because they're often hard to see, sometimes don't bleed, and you often can't get any sense of what direction it went in without surgery. This video gave me more respect for the humble screwdriver. And I think I prefer Phillips over flat head, and I don't know why...
As a female i always carry one with me, thanks for a freat video - Phillips are the best, most important thing is that it feels comfortable in your hand and pocket. Try out a few... When you have it you wont need it. Stay safe everyone
Sadly.... Carrying a screw driver on its own without a reason in the UK is an offence!😓If you get pulled over and have a screwdriver under the car seat or in the door pocket you can be arrested... a charge probably wouldn't stick if you haven't got priors, but if you're out on parole or anything then you're Screwed!..... 😂
@@domzbu Hey man if that's how you feel about it great, I personally don't carry around anything that can't be replaced, so in the unlikely event someone wants to mug me using a weapon they can have whatever I've got on me, It's just not worth dying or killing someone over. But hey you do what you think is best, I hope it works out for you.
@Sean Francis Waters Lancaster If someone really wants to kill you the chances are they're going to kill you, they'll stab/bludgeon/shoot you before you've had time to react, having you're own weapon on you isn't going to make a difference. Don't get me wrong i'm not a helpless victim i'm capable of defending myself but I'm realistic about my chances
100 % agree. It's why I have a phillips in the car, not only do I need it to put the car in gear, but it's a weapon of opportunity. And I have a list of reasons for not piking a flathead
One of my concerns with this as a self defense weapon is that (similar to a knife) if your assailant is pumped full of adrenaline and doesn’t know they’re being stabbed (i.e. they didn’t see you produce a stabbing weapon and think they’re just being punched), they may not REALISE they’re taking so much damage and continue attacking, and you may end up doing more damage than you anticipated. It’s more a legal problem than a practical one, but as someone in a place with very strict self defense laws (the UK), it is something that would deter me from carrying a stabbing implement as a self defense tool even if it can be justified that it was legal to have it on your person. To be completely honest though, I don’t have statistics on how likely that scenario would be, so maybe it’s not as big a risk as I assume? Either way, the risk definitely doesn’t exist with a flashlight, so part of me feels like it’s a safer bet to stick to that as a primary option. WDYT?
I feel like someone that is going to run through 20 stab wounds is probably going to run through most things you can throw at them. If they are continuously attacking you, you SHOULD be in the clear, but I agree that UK has some tricky laws. Frankly, a screwdriver might be more viable in the UK simply because it's one of the few things you might not get arrested for carrying
Yeah, I just looked it up and M99 is essentially right. If the cops think you had it with the intent of fighting (whether it's self-defense apparently doesn't matter), you get up to 4 years. Anything you carry for self-defense is instantly illegal, BECAUSE you're carrying it for self-defense. So, get really good at martial arts, I guess. (I'm not a lawyer, and this isn't legal advice. I just Google things.)
@@Matt90Nine This is a really great analysis. I agree with lots of it, particularly the case of the umbrella and walking cane. The only thing is that I wonder whether a torch would be classified as a weapon if it was used to flash people in the eyes (as opposed to clubbing them in the head with it, i.e. keeping a small palm-sized light). There are self defense items you’re legally allowed to carry, namely alarms and dye sprays, where the caveat is that they cannot be used to do any harm to the other party. It would be interesting to know if the light would qualify as this. It could also be feasible to argue your right to carry it with reasons other than self defense. An exceptionally good argument is keeping it in your car, since looking in an engine bay even in daylight can be tough without one. A decent one might be if you walk through an unlit area near your home (although the better option would be to avoid that in the first place, but hey, some people live in the countryside and it’s not an option for them). A barely passable one might be that you’ve been caught out in surprise situations before where you thought ‘damn, I wish I had a light, my phone is dead, this sucks’. Honestly, I might try and do some digging in common law to see if there is precedent of torches used in self defense and/or torches in everyday carry. That would give us the clearest answer. I suppose as @Armchair Violence says too, even with a torch, you gotta get good at martial arts. You can’t be charged for having hands, as much as the prosecution might love to try.
I think the idea is, if you’re being threatened by a guy holding a knife or obviously some concealed weapon in his clenched fist down by his side, then the screwdriver might even up your chances of either a) deterring him (I did this with a pen once in exactly this situation, with a burglar outside a friends house, and he didn’t know it was a pen luckily) ...or b) even up your chances of you dispatching that person instead of them despatching you, where they come at you and give you no escape route, also apply to multiple attackers.
@@Matt90Nine that’s some serious bullshit on the violent crime stats mate. I live in a nice neighbourhood in London and I can tell you that you don’t have only a 0.1% chance of being physically hurt in your entire lifetime by a criminal. That’s just hilarious. Also, the aspect of deterrence and psychological preparedness can play a huge role, at those times. And carrying a torch but only on a key ring? What?? It’s not illegal to carry a torch of any size, their primary function is lighting the dark, and the uk is dark early for half the year. UK law permits the use of any object as a tool of self defence if the force is deemed proportionate and if the object or tool is coincidental to hand and as long as its primary purpose is not as a weapon. So a torch is a perfectly practical self defence tool providing you can justify the context of your defence and level of force.
4" c- clamps "knuckle dusters" may have some interesting uses. And for a hammer you may find an Eastwing drywall hammer/hatchet to be better balanced. Also take a look @ nail puller/ cat paws pry bars. Tools are my jam 👍
I believe that an important link in the chain is whether a person would want to use the weapon in a defense situation. I personally would use anything I can reach but I have known others that would not kill a fly, but hurting was acceptable. I believe a self defense pen is a better option. It is less lethal that the screwdriver but it also has other uses. Also the length of the screwdriver can create leverage issues when trying to use again hard targets. A screwdriver witha shorter throw like 3 inches would be more stable. Thanks for the cool videos. They are entertaining and educational. BTW my grandparents lived in the South Side of Chicago and always had an icepick in the cars carpeting on the trans hump. 🙂
How about a combination wrench? Open end/ box end. The advantage over the screw driver would be less chance of puncturing the attacker. Also allows the use of compliance holds by trapping fingers in the box end or between the teeth on the open end. Not to mention bone shattering strikes with he ends or flat shift.
@@stevenscott2136 sure you can. If a guy grabs, his fingers become available. They also become more pliable after having other parts smashed beforehand. Depends of course on the size of wrench

I've carried a screwdriver for self-defence for years... and yes it's a Phillips head. 😏 Nice rubberised handle for extra grip, too. Haven't actually used it as a weapon in that time, but it's been very handy on a few occasions... as an actual screwdriver. 😁 If you really want to not be sus carrying a screwdriver, you can also carry some screws... 😉
hi, as a french guy, because you can't carry weapons, you would have troubles with th police if they find you with a screwdriver. either you work in construction, and you don't only have a screwdriver, then they let you go no problems, or you don't, and just have that and they will keep it stating that you were going to steal something or use it as a weapon. especially if you're young and poor.
I imagine any HEMA dagger system that focused on thrust-centric Rondel dagger (which often didn't have sharp edges), like Meyer, Fiore, etc would provide a lot more useful information on use and defense. For example, the "fake-go" move he loves so much is already a documented move
Screw drivers? Here in the UK, we call that Shanking Someone Subtly.... 😂 Anyways, any chance you can make an analysis video on the effectiveness of a flip flop/sandal?
Absolutely. Most fights end up in a tussle and once you're grabbed held of and or holding someone, its an extremely effective tool and hard for the other guy to grab off you by which time you may have already done your damage.
Hmmm? You mean, a shank? Lol, Feeling silly. I Literally have a bucket of screwdrivers. Yet also have a substantial investment it knives. Wow. First world issues.
The best is, keep a small set in a zip up binder, label the binder work tools for PC. Keep a few screw drivers, flat heads. Every time you get out of your vehicle, take the screw driver with you. In your hoodie pocket, vest, work pants/ whatever. You could even drill a hole and make a Lanyard for better retention.
As an electrician I have looked at the usefulness of the screw driver as a self defense tool. I've also looked at my hammer pliers, drill bits but my favorite is a combination open end, box end wrench, about 6 inches long. I find a 19 mm works best for my hand thow someone with bigger fingers might need a larger wrench.
Screwdrivers are common self defense weapons here in the UK because of the stringent knife laws. But the law are on to that and if you get caught carrying a screwdriver without good reason you will be knicked... so much so I’ve known electricians stopped whilst wearing their tool belt in a public place during their lunch break and severely reprimanded with the threat of arrest!

Carrying a cane around, when you don't actually need it for walking support is quite annoying. I inherited a really cool cane with a sculptured metal head of a bird of prey as grip as a young man, and I tried making a habit of carrying it with me. It is annoying.
@@stefanb6539 I like canes, though. They make me feel dapper.
Also I can use them to fight people. And I have. Nothing better than a good ol stick.
A walking stick, crook and ball head, need to be on the test here, they can use the same techniques on the umbreakable umbrella
Those guys can't fight.
What about people who've trained in canne de combat?
philipshead is smooth, a pointy end, goes in and out clean
flathead tip is much wider and more blunt, some even have roughened edge for additional grip, it is more likely to get jammed in joint/bone/tissues
We use to throw them, got pretty good at sticking them in a sheet of plywood
One of things I love the most and I'm envious the most about this is the brainstorming you guys do together
Keep the collaborations coming they are fantastic 🤙🏻
The hold on your screw driver reminds me of how hema people use rondel daggers (which are essentially pointy rods)
They're quite often bladed and a great deal longer but I see the point (no pun intended). Just an ice pick grip, no?
I have been thinking about screwdrivers so many times when i train with the rondel, a long flathead would be perfect then you can stab, you can hook, you can grapple.
I love that Mike never DOESN'T look like an absolute lunatic in videos with Seth
Hammerfist > Skrewdriver
Yes I’m talking about bands 🤘
Literally anything > Skrewdriver
This is a really brilliant idea!!! Especially if you live in a state where you aren’t allowed to carry knives.
I workers all over nyc night clubs self defense only works in nyc on couple of variables 1 you just retreat runaway first and there better be a witness that see the attacker running after your or on camera 📷
2 does the attacker have a weapon on there person or showing it or using physical threats or verbaling say I’m going to cause harm
3 you better not have any form of training or be younger and much larger human being
So if 5,7 150 lbs man’s attacks 6,5 295lbs man with his bar hands and the bigger guys kills the smaller guy the courts and the law may not be In Your favor also you need be careful
On call 911 and speaking to the NYPD when the self defense happens and form of admission can and will always used aginst you under stand the laws not what some may think 🤔 in the moment of you police 👮♂️ discretion doesn’t always help when there’s quotas involved
My advice is to always record if anything
2 run away and call the police 👮♂️. And again never speak to them cuz if there investagitnting N assault or homicide that took place they can arrest you. So again be careful don’t be a tough guy in nyc
I love when mike gets mad, he’s like a little firecracker 🧨
The Philips head genuinely gives you, even if it is just subconsciously the feeling that you're holding something designed to go into things. A flathead will go just as deep, and honestly kind of scares me more from the idea of it being dragged across whatever it happens to get stuck against but it just looks like a spear point. Also still looking forward to that eventual hammer instructional.
"I can put this in my pocket safely; I won't hurt myself with it...
... terribly"
the word "terribly" is doing a lot of work there Mike, a lot of us have tripped/sat/bent over with the screwdriver we were 'only going to put in our pocket for a second between tasks' and ended up bleeding from the side :)
I like to live in grey areas.
Next video: the roll of pennys! I’ve been told it can make a punch more powerful. Thoughts?
Thought about this since I was a teenager. The Phillips head is pointier, more stabbee (stabby). I've broken more flat heads than phillips
Can confirm. They pierce your hand more easily
People underapreciate slashing, it's a lot harder to defend, no need to aim precisely, doesn't leave you as exposed as a thrust, easier to chain multiple slashes, acts as both ofense and defense, less likely to seriously injure the other person.
This combined with HEMA dagger techniques (since the majority are for narrow blades in an ice pick grip) just *chef’s kiss!
You're right. Oral fixation is the phrase
See I thought so! They were acting like I was crazy and stupid and perverted.
We grew up throwing screwdrivers like knives and sticking them into trees 🌳.
My friends father is a Tai Chi master and the screwdriver has always been his go-to when carrying a “tool” in NYC since the 70’s. I once saw home put one through the skin of car door and penetrate all the way through the inside door liner
2:25 “Chewing gum makes you look lazy”
Your muay thai instructor is about to mess you up the next time he sees you, Seth
What’s new lmao
The pointed Kubotan with hand-grip is very similar to the screwdriver. I have found that the pointed Kubotan also is very effective for self defence application.
"Smell my breath... I have NOT brushed my teeth today." Hahaha! That's why we love you, Mike!
(Even tho I'm an Aikido guy. lol)
Love that former Seal Team Six commander and creator.
Anyone carrying a screwdriver around everyday has probably few screws loose xd.
I prefer the torx bit drivers, the impact really brightens up their day with the 🌞 pattern. But #2 philips for a stronger metal piece is better than #1 size.
0:05
Hello, darkness, my old friend...
"If you're in a country where you can't carry any weapons, this is okay"
Pathetically, in a lot of countries like Britain or Australia even tools like screwdrivers are considered illegal offensive weapons unless you're specifically on the job at a job that necessitates using one.
Very true
Carry a sturdy pen or two when traveling abroad-
My grandmother second husband carried a 12 inch flat head sharpened screwdriver on his belt. He was a guy born at the beggining of the 1900s, very different and violent times here. He was more than 90 years old and still carried it, claiming it was for self defense and it was no illegal to carry a screwdriver. He knew what he was doing.
The look on Seths face when Mike mentioned the need to have something in your mouth. Priceless
haha
Love the idea. Ive been thinking about this for a long time! Nice to see it in action.
I got the idea it could be a good weapon for the first time while playing Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, lol
Fantastic game
Awesome video Mike! I would note though that some places you could not carry this. I live in the UK, where it would be legal if you had a legitimate reason for carrying it (e.g. for work), but if you were carrying it for the purpose of self defence, it would be illegal.
I saw the thumbnail and I instantly got worried for Seth. 😅
Thanks for your concern, I’m still not okay lol
@@SenseiSeth Hahaha
This was a rough weekend.
Just watched this again. Sober this time. Good shit dude. Keep up the new self defence tools reviews. Respect.
I have personally used a screwdriver as a self defense weapon and successfully protected myself against 2 attackers
Wowzers! That's crazy. Glad you made it out of there.
Screw driver with flashlight attachment???
As a female i always carry one with me, thanks for a freat video - Phillips are the best, most important thing is that it feels comfortable in your hand and pocket. Try out a few... When you have it you wont need it. Stay safe everyone
Sadly.... Carrying a screw driver on its own without a reason in the UK is an offence!😓If you get pulled over and have a screwdriver under the car seat or in the door pocket you can be arrested... a charge probably wouldn't stick if you haven't got priors, but if you're out on parole or anything then you're Screwed!..... 😂
dystopian UK
To be fair if you are carrying a screwdriver around without a good reason, it's probably because want to stab someone with it "defending " yourself.
@@bamberlamb6512 seeing as so many uk muggers carry knives.... better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.
You can’t be charged for having hands, as
much as the prosecution might love to try.

0:33, Yeah man, if you stab someone with that they're screwed.

I have a screwdriver with a built in flashlight for screwing in the dark. Is it a self defense super weapon?
I'M DROOLING
How about a combination wrench? Open end/ box end. The advantage over the screw driver would be less chance of puncturing the attacker. Also allows the use of compliance holds by trapping fingers in the box end or between the teeth on the open end. Not to mention bone shattering strikes with he ends or flat shift.
You're not going to trap and manipulate a finger in the end of a wrench under any kind of fight conditions.
@@stevenscott2136 sure you can. If a guy grabs, his fingers become available. They also become more pliable after having other parts smashed beforehand. Depends of course on the size of wrench

hi, as a french guy, because you can't carry weapons, you would have troubles with th police if they find you with a screwdriver. either you work in construction, and you don't only have a screwdriver, then they let you go no problems, or you don't, and just have that and they will keep it stating that you were going to steal something or use it as a weapon. especially if you're young and poor.

Ask british lawmakers what they think of screwdrivers
The point is to not get killed. British lawmakers are a clown show.
I imagine any HEMA dagger system that focused on thrust-centric Rondel dagger (which often didn't have sharp edges), like Meyer, Fiore, etc would provide a lot more useful information on use and defense.
For example, the "fake-go" move he loves so much is already a documented move

The best is, keep a small set in a zip up binder, label the binder work tools for PC.
Keep a few screw drivers, flat heads. Every time you get out of your vehicle, take the screw driver with you. In your hoodie pocket, vest, work pants/ whatever. You could even drill a hole and make a Lanyard for better retention.
Hahaha the ending was great. Love how genuine you both are.
Next weapon analysis I'd like to see is Crowbar or Wrench.
Love your videos, thats great improvised weapon for self defense,i always have couple of tools, screwdrivers and other tools with me.
