why is everyone incapable of liking one car without hating the other? Grow up children they are both great cars you will probably never be lucky enough to drive.
Porsche is total passion, perfection and tested beyond the limits. The safest car to race and most practical to enjoy everyday. Tough, brutal, monster machine. Ferrari, well drop dead gorgeous and insanely beautiful and sexy indeed. For me forever Porsche..
Once a fan of Porsche.....always a fan a Porsche. Especially 911 territory!!!!! Still the same long bonnet, rear hatch, rear engined, highly iconic sports car for over 40yrs. Available with Porsche's electronic 4 wheel drive system, that you can drive in the snow with Porsche's special winter tires. There is no auto maker on this earth that grabs my heart, mind and soul like Porsche does. They excite all my inner, mental, and physical emotions. A undescribable pleasure that reality can't touch.
How can anyone possibly choose? These are two incredible cars, somewhat different in their philosophies, but either one will assault your senses and make you feel alive. And feel good to be alive. Epic stuff, Evo, keep them coming!
Keep up the good work Chris. Amazing review. Chris just intellectualizes the love of cars better than any journalist out there right now. For me.. The Porsche just presses more of the right buttons than the Ferrari. It's just more raw, more 'hands on'. Of course I haven't driven either lol....
EVO magazine started in 1998. In 2010, EVO named the 997.2 GT3 RS 3.8 their car of the year. EVO magazine had a special edition in October, 2014 for their 200th issue. They picked 20 cars over their 16 years of publication to represent the best of what EVO stands for, including CGT, GT2, LFA, and 458. Numerous journalist spent days, driving many miles in these cars…. In the end they picked the 997.2 GT3 RS 3.8 as THE car, the best among the best of the prior 16 years. Chris Harris is a motorsports journalist and an incredible driver. In a recent video named “The future of the Porsche 911”, the hosts asks Chris if he could only pick ONE 911 to have/drive, only one, what would it be? His response, the 997.2 GT3 RS 3.8. This machine is legendary and will go down as one of the greatest analog driving experiences ever.
Sod the comparison itself - you cannot disregard either of them, without being a complete numpty! What is truly awesome is how Chris avoided the “lazy” conclusion. Love the depth and the honest feel of the review!
Harris being a Porsche fanboy aside, I think we can all see from the outside view that he was enjoying himself in the Porsche more, and honestly, when it comes to picking sportscars I feel that the smile you get when you step out is a huge huge factor.
In racing, GT3 spec form, there is little difference between the two. In factory road car form, just two nice different flavors of ice cream. You want a car you have got to tame and feed the right inputs to in order to do so, the 911 GT3 RS is your car. You want a car with the tech to make you look like a hero at a track day and then wash it off and have the valet choose to park it in front of a fancy restaurant, then the 458 is your car. And spell-check EVO, spell-check. Apostrophes are your friend!
I'm partial to the Porsche & what it stands for and would have any of there cars but I am in complete awe of what Ferrari has accomplished with their latest cars, the 599 GTO & now this 458.
both cars are legends, already. guys who don't want'em both, don't enjoy driving! period. evo and chris did a great job paying these cars the tribute they deserve.
@yonopuedo90 Actually it's the suspension and chassis that makes the gt3 handle better. When the GT2 RS comes out, which has the gt3 rs chassis with the GT2 engine we'll see. If you know what you're doing you will never experience turbo lag while going all out. A friend of mine has a ridiculous turbo on his Evo, and there's lag all the way to 4000rpm but when you're thrashing it you rarely ever get off boost even in hair-pins.
@wolfdanger The shot wants to show that with the rs your input translates to a certain output defined by physics, and not by 10 electronic devices, that which makes the car more rewarding, stating you cant drive an rs with clean lines is quite silly really, and how much time will you spend around the track or searching for that extra second around it,and not actually drive the car in a public road, where a full analogue car is of course much more rewarding in sensible speeds than a playstationferrari
so chris, which would you chose at the end of the day? for me if i want to set blazing lap times at a track i'd take the 458 but if i wanted to have a damn good time on a twisty mountain road id have the GT3.
the last shot was priceless...u see the 911 drifting through the bend while the 458 just turns...the ferrari maybe faster but the porsche is really a driver's car...manual gear stick, no buttons on the steering with the 12oclock mark, single nut rims,etc...pure racing genes
@engared ur forgeting somethink, the mp4-12c does have history andpassion.what car offers a better driving expirience than the mclaren f1,its predicessore.
@alphaswimmer55 . Direct and indirect fuel injection replaced carburetors in european racing in the mid 50s - early-to-mid 60s period. The only carburetor racecars were on the ones imported from America for touring car racing.
@bingrasm with the engine in the back, you have better traction from a standing start and greater traction exiting a corner. It requires a different type of driving.
Sound in ferrari is Synthetic in the Porsche its Authentic, i know which i'd take and its not a car for everybody to look at me thinking i've got great big balls. The GT3rs is simple and very effective and thats what counts.
***** Listen up kiD no need to be rude just cause u R on youtube, watch Chris N listen to his quote closely as he states the Synthetic note of the Fezza vs Authentic note of the GT3rs on part 2 of the vid. I am certain/hope u are not representative of users Ferraris, else it will be war out there on the roads regarding my exhaust/note is bigger/better than yours.
***** you and your superior knowledge should know that there are all kinds of different membranes and what not being fitted to exhaust systems nowadays. you think you can tell from just a couple of exterior pictures what's actually on the inside of the exhaust? also, get a clue on metaphors, the word synthetic is often used to mean not authentic, fabricated.
jb1563700 Watch Pt 1 of the video, secondly i meant synthetic which as u correctly stated means fabricated, did not want to spell it out(if u are trying to be sarcastic) also no where do i say i am a guru or the most knowledgeable about cars. Mr Oxford dictionary and know it all about cars. My point, my opinion is shared freely not an attack and u do not have to see eye to eye with me, if u choose to take it personal its your problem not mine.
@sydneyfc i agree mostly with your comment, however after going in a 430 scuderia yesterday i realised that the gear change was actually the most phenomenal aspect of driving the car, it was just an awesome machine, with the technology in the ferrari's today, they will always be my choice,, porsche can match on performance, but are still in the 1970's with body design
He's right, the final shot was a brilliant conclusion. No words could put it better than that. I think these two cars are a milestone in sports car history. I'm an old school F/R and manual gearbox type of guy, so the Porsche appeals to me hugely...yet there is also something inside me that can't stop thinking about the new DSG style cars like the Ferrari. I don't want to let go of my manual, but at the same time...*sigh* you know what I mean...right? Kei
Wow nice cars. I said maybe, but the 360CS is 1 generation older than that 997 gt3 rs, its 2002 vs 2008 , I think the 430 scuderia would change your opinion You should check out the video when Clarckson compares a 996 GT3 RS to a 360 CS on Top Gear
@positivesecret actually the ferrari 458 is 11 years ahead of that porsche, since the porsche 911 gte rs was released on 1999 and then ferrari was just released on 2010
Porsche looks way more fun to drive. I love the 911 Turbo. This guy is gives excellent reviews like Top Gear. He has a genuine passion for sports cars and is insightful in his choice of words and information and personal opinions. He says it in ways that average guys like me who can't afford these cars can at least feel what he's doing and feeling behind the wheel.
Awesome review. I really don't think you could go wrong with either of those cars.

F430 Scuderia would have been a better comparison for the GT3 RS But the Scuderia or maybe even the old 360 challeng is better in every way. Ferrari looks better, sounds better, drives better, what can you say about the porsche? that all models look the same more than 40 years, that the engine is in the wrong place, that it originaly came from the VW beetle. You should compare the 458 with the 911 Turbo because thats what the porsche needs to keep up with this Ferrari. No turbocharger no chance.
@dumon13 the 458 replaces the 430 and the 430 replaced the 360 and the 360 came out in 98 following your logic the porsche is 1 year newer. both cars are the newest the company has to offer...
@netxinho I dunno man I don't think you can rip on the ferrari tech too much unless you've experienced it. I agree the scuderia is epic but it's almost as techy as the 458. Ferrari goes to great lengths to make the electronics buried behind the experience. I'm sure if you stepped into and drove one you would eat your words fairly quickly. The experince would be that epic. Also the 911 has worked for 40 years to make that engine layout work and with the new engine mounts they've gone even further
@SuperleggeraVW I think he's talking about NASCAR and/or those other american low tech series (sprint cars, midgets and such) with use carburetors, live axle suspensions and 2/3/4 speed manual transmissions (3 or 4 only if you're lucky).
Ferrari is ultimate passion. Porsche is historical integrity. No matter how modern Ferrari is, it still has its Italian Soul. no matter how new a Porsche is, a 911 will always be a 911. I would buy the 911 because it's the purest expression of Man-and-machine experience.
@OriginalAtomicSheep I hope you're not making fun. :) I just like that Porsche's are more analog and actually have feedback. If that 458 has the steering feel (or lack of) a California, that would be annoying to me. I got to drive a California and it was nice, but it definitely lacked steering feedback. Here's a more valid argument, though. The Porsche is practical, can be driven everyday, and it won't catch on fire. ;)
What a brilliant video. Pure quality, great commentary and shooting. GT3 gets the nod from me. Ferrari is to techo while the gt3 is still a 'proper' hands on race car. I could not give a fuck for computer aided driving. On country blasts on the weekend, you're not going to miss tenths of a second.
The Turbo is a fantastic car no doubt about it, I still have not driven anything much faster than my father's 997.1 Turbo Cabriolet(with its 6 speed manual!), but I have driven the 997.2 GT3 RS and it just plain feels like it's wired directly to your body and mind. Shame I didn't drive it on a track... But I'm still happy with my AP1 S2000!
@TheLiveMikeys that's why I would choose 458 even compared to gt2 rs . it's the handling that makes the diff . this video makes clear that 458 has better handling . porsche is ready to go drifting while 458 is stuck to the road making the drivers steering so easy
This Porsche GT3 RS needs the PDK geabox but then with a swifter like the WRC rallycars, just one big shifter for shifting up and down behind the right site of the wheel .Then when driving aggressively you can countersteer what is needed just with one hand while choosing the right gear at the same moment. See 1:42 but also with downshifting while braking into corners he he. Legendary WRC driver Francois Delecour of an other EVO Channel movie will love my suggestion ;)
With the 458 I'm afraid Ferrari is going the way of the GTR and appealing to video game sensibilities. The thing I love is that Porsche has always been about making cars go fast with 6 cylinder boxer engines. Ferrari has changed their formula for fast cars from big front engined v-12's to mid-engined v8's.
@MRRRKOOLLL I wouldn't go so far as to call the 512 TR a timeless design. I don't think the 456GT is the greatest either. Some classic examples of Ferrari's most impressive cars include - 250 GTO, 512 BBi / 365 GT4 BB, 365 GTB/4 Daytona, 365 GTC/4, 275 GTS Spyder, 288 GTO, 250 GT Lusso, F355, 550M and 308 GTB. I'll give LDM and Pininfarina credit with developing 2 of my favs on that list. - but that was over a decade ago.
I was skeptical that the exhaust note of the GT3 would be better than the 458, because the 458 sounds great (still not quite as awesome as the 355 or 360, though), but he's right. The GT3 sounds incredible. For me, I'd have to pick the Porsche because it seems to offer a more rewarding driving experience. Plus, Porsches are slightly more practical than Ferraris being that they're less expensive and cheaper to maintain.
I think everyone has summed up the comparison in an adequate manner. For everyday Joe's like the majority of us, I think its safe to say, we would be smiling from ear to own or even drive one these. Its a matter of taste. Porsche: An absolute brute, with a certain charm thats undeniable, You cant hide behind any electronics, it test you as a driver. Ferrari: Refined, tech savy, and smooth. I'd take the Porsche, but I cant deny the Ferrari is nice.
Exactly, Porsche has this thing, "a base" that just appeals to anyone who wishes to drive, actually drive. Not the "the car will sort everything for you" thing.
The 458 italia is another league both in price and performance. That said, I would rather have the GT3 RS on a track and work for every tenth of a second a lap. The GT3 RS 4.0 would be a dream track car.
'Actions speak louder than words". Chris was driving the gt3 rs in that final shot, I think we know what car he prefers.
He also bought a gt3rs 4.0 when it was new.
why is everyone incapable of liking one car without hating the other? Grow up children they are both great cars you will probably never be lucky enough to drive.
Wow, that Porsche engine note just instantly put a smile on my face! :)
Porsche is total passion, perfection and tested beyond the limits. The safest car to race and most practical to enjoy everyday. Tough, brutal, monster machine. Ferrari, well drop dead gorgeous and insanely beautiful and sexy indeed. For me forever Porsche..

Probably the best car review i have seen in my life
How can anyone possibly choose? These are two incredible cars, somewhat different in their philosophies, but either one will assault your senses and make you feel alive. And feel good to be alive.

For me.. The Porsche just presses more of the right buttons than the Ferrari. It's just more raw, more 'hands on'. Of course I haven't driven either lol....
One of the all time greats from Chris!!! Faultless...
as much as i love ferraris, i will always be a sucker for proper manual shifting cars

Wow, I love EVO
Thanks for always uploading what the viewers want to see!
Excellent as always. Loved the movie at the end, watched it about 10 times. Awesome driving and great cars !
Never seen evotv before. First vid. Chris Harris. I'm staying forever

The last 15-20 secs of this video is just epic.

Both cars melted my heart like butter.
Can't wait for the GT3 RS 4.0 test!
What some car manufacturers don't understand, is that it is very rewarding working hard when driving a car.
I think that the 'Analogue vs digital' comparison is fairly sensible between these two lovely machines.
The ferrari is a one night stand, the porsche you would marry ! Excellent review as alweys.
I'm partial to the Porsche & what it stands for and would have any of there cars but I am in complete awe of what Ferrari has accomplished with their latest cars, the 599 GTO & now this 458.

Chris Harris for president! AWESOME review as always!
That GT3 is going to go down in history as one of the best pure sports cars the world has ever seen. It's that good.
Ah Chris Harris - you are a brilliant reviewer indeed!!! I loved the ending shot to this review, well done.
i like how Chris (younger man) is in the Porsche and the older man is in the Ferrari for the last scene.
Great video!! Got my first ride (passenger) in a GT3 RS last weekend round Silverstone and @3:15 thats exactly how it sounds!!!
@engared ur forgeting somethink, the mp4-12c does have history andpassion.what car offers a better driving expirience than the mclaren f1,its predicessore.

Damn your reviews are good lately , keep em up....
As a Porsche driver that often goes to the track I can tell you that both these cars are really great at making panties come off.
excellent review! Chris is the man! its really your choice! analog or digital? traditional drivers vs future tech?
I don't see the sense in arguing. Both of these cars are drop-dead gorgeous, I'd kill to own either one.
I'd take the GT3 RS over the 458 100 time over!

Great driving Chris 8-)
Nice review Chris :)
3:47 the conclusion is great!
Where is part 1?
What a beautiful review
People stop complaining about the money, and please enjoy the show!
Those who can afford it, will certainly go and buy on of em.
@MRRRKOOLLL I love the Porsche but I kinda agree with you. However, I don't think "safe" is the right word?
I was skeptical that the exhaust note of the GT3 would be better than the 458, because the 458 sounds great (still not quite as awesome as the 355 or 360, though), but he's right. The GT3 sounds incredible.
For me, I'd have to pick the Porsche because it seems to offer a more rewarding driving experience. Plus, Porsches are slightly more practical than Ferraris being that they're less expensive and cheaper to maintain.
Ferrari's character is like imma kick your ass ( Fight starter )
Porsche's character is like i wanna see you try ( Fight finisher )
great review! i think i'd choose the RS.
does this new gt3 have direct fuel injection or not??
brilliant Chris just brilliant.
Chris Harris needs a top-notch TV production crew----- NOW
Exactly, Porsche has this thing, "a base" that just appeals to anyone who wishes to drive, actually drive. Not the "the car will sort everything for you" thing.
The 911 looks like shitloads of fun, but I just can't get over the looks of that 458. Oh my GOD that car is a looker.
A great, ispired review! Nice soundtrack, too...
The 458 italia is another league both in price and performance. That said, I would rather have the GT3 RS on a track and work for every tenth of a second a lap. The GT3 RS 4.0 would be a dream track car.
17 years old, just won the lotto, just got my 458. i know u wish u were me. hahahahaa
That Porsche looked more AWESOME sliding around that corner!!! The Ferrari was just Awesome!
