- I'm sure you already know the meaning, but in case you didn't know the exact term, a polydactyl cat is a cat which has extra toes on their paws. Ernest Hemingway was a huge fan of these cats, and if you were to visit his home in Key West, Florida, you'd see clowders of cats with extra toes roaming all around.
Many people have a soft spot in their hearts for these extra-toed cats. But did you know that there are all sorts of fun facts about polydactyl cats? And since I love sharing cat facts with the world, I've rounded up some of the best polydactyl cat facts for you to enjoy!

My boy has two extra thumbs on his front paws and one extra toe on his back paws, I'm happy to know he is a rare boy full of love (and beans)
These cats can also stand on their hind legs longer and pick things up with 1 paw. We have 1 of them with an extra toe on all 4 paws who just gave birth to 1 with an extra toe on each back paw, plus mittens in the front. The mothers brother has the has the perfectly shaped mittens in the front as well. Our family has been blessed by these extraordinary felines! 😁

My Polycat, Polly, is just wonderful. I got her as a rescue adult cat and she has been a great pet. Super affectionate.
And often, more than other cats, they like their bellies rubbed
My cat "Bigfoot" had 7 toes on each foot. 28 total. He was a tough customer.

I have a deaf albino polydactyl cat.. he's very smart.. and probably the sweetest pet I've ever had very kindly I work with him through vibration. I believe he has been deaf since he has been born I don't think he's ever been able to hear. His original owner was diagnosed with cancer and passed away so from what I understand he wasn't able to hear as a kitten so my guess was that he was born this way I took him because I wanted to help my friend seeing how her dad passed away or was passing away at the time I felt as though the cat needed someone and so did I he's a beautiful cat I'm very blessed to have him
That's so wonderful for you to do. That must be difficult for you to communicate with him. But I bet he still likes to talk to you. I have four Polys, strays, born under a log pile outside of my garage. Three will let you rub their bellies. And they are all vocal., like to talk. They are good company. I just had one of these kittens show up as a stray on my porch. I live out in the middle of nowhere. My closest neighbor is a half mile away and they don't even have cats. Strange, but she is now a new addition to my home. I call her Gizmo because she looks like a Gremlin.

I luv my dactyl kitty. I got her from a rescue shelter when she was only weeks old. Her tail was badly damaged and they bobbed it off. So I name her "Nubber" ! She is a blue Russian. She only has extra toes on one paw, and of course she uses that one to smack stuff around! She has a big mean claw on that side though that I have to trim regularly as it turns in and digs into her paw. Nubber is the luv of my life!
Our Poly cat is so sweet. we when first got her she was scaring the crap out of our dogs because she was so lovey she couldn't help always brushing up against them and loving on them. It took no time at all for them to return the affection. They are now an inseparable house gang of buddies. She is such a sweetheart.

My Simba has 5 on each of his hind legs and 7 on each of his front. He has great balance and jumps perfectly & softly on my shoulders.

My family had two boys and a girl all from the same litter. Pyewacket the black and white girl had 20 toes, Oscar Mayer the grey and white boy had 20 toes. And my cat....Chessie the railroad kitten. I adopted brother & sister polydactyl cats almost 20 years ago. My boy, Nicky Six Toes went to the Rainbow Bridge on January 15 🐈⬛💔 He was a goof ball with a huge personality, the loudest meow and very prominent thumbs! I miss him so much😭 His sister Nora has paws more dainty that look more like mittens. She also has an extra dew claw on her hind legs which is pretty unique. When she was a young cat, she used to blow my mind with how good she was with her thumbs. And so smart! I worked at home and my assistant kept a laser pointer in his side table drawer. Nora figure out how to open the drawer, loop her thumb in the ring on the laser pointer and drop it at Jim’s feet. He would entertain her for a few minutes, then return it to the drawer. Two minutes later, it would start all over again. Both had crazy climbing skills. I would find her sitting at the corner of an open door where the door and opening to the bathroom or whatever doorway she could occupy! Nicky wasn’t as bright. He ended up on the top of a cabinet over the toilet and couldn’t figure out a way down. He decided to jump on my back and slide down. Sucks I was wearing a halter top! It’s a lot of toes to ride down bare skin. Definitely left tracks down my back! Probably the only time in 20 years I got upset with my sweet little man. I will miss him til the day I die!

I moved into a new place five years ago, the neighbors cat would visit me before anyone else. I didn't know her name, but she is polydactyl and calico, except for her paws, which are white. I began calling her Mittens. To this day I still call her mittens, which she responds to. Even though I learned later that her name is Cali lol

My daughter's friend has a brother with an extra thumb. Well, he had an extra thumb. Snip, snip and he's down to ten. I think they should have left it there. But, of course, I didn't have to live with it, and I don't know if it became a problem.
I have a cat with extra toes and she has a claw between toes on each front paw. It's extremely hard to cut, it's thick, and I'm not sure if it's hurting her. I worry about it a lot. I would never ever declaw my cat but I was wondering if declawing these specific claws between her toes would cause her any pain? Would it be helpful to her or would she be in pain? I have asked my vet and she didn't have answers. Any suggestions?
Have you asked for an x-ray for your cat? If the claws aren't attached to any bone it shouldn't be a problem to remove them at all.
My cat has 22 toes she kind of has a lot and every night I can just hear click click click down the hallway and she comes right in my to my room so I know it's her each time
I’ve owned one since I was 9 almost 10 she was a stray at first then I wanted to keep and she stayed since she is the rarer version she has extra toes on her back paws as well

Growing up, I had a longhaired tiger striped blond one(who gradually turned almost white with age) with double thumbs that we adopted as a feral kitten from a farm. When he was a kitten just a few months old he killed a gray squirrel roughly his size and dragged it home by the tail, prancing like a posh little prince the whole way, proud of his trophy. That was the beginning of his squirrel fetish, as when he was older he started keeping a collection of tails all nicely lined up underneath our deck. Mice are for amateurs. When he was 14, he dragged home a hare. He lived to the ripe old age of 18 before he finally disappeared into the woods. We figure a coyote or an eagle probably got him as there were some around at the time and he was getting a little slower in his old age, but that's 13-16 years longer than your average outdoor cat will live.....

I grew up in a small country town. Our neighbors got a cat because of our a local rat problem. Solved. She, and later, her kittens completely solved the issue. And, the local rabbits, if they weren't fast enough, paid a heavy price for complacency. Since we had a neighborhood vegetable garden, I didn't mind a few less rabbits, squirrels, mice or rats. Our dog once, and only once, took an interest in her kittens. He never did that again.
