- Our BEST Sweet Potato CONTAINER Growing Harvest EVER! | how to grow sweet potatoes | Harvest 2020 | Guten Yardening
YES!! Sweet Potato Harvest 2020 continues... We are ready to harvest sweet potatoes that we grew in black food grade plastic containers.
Our diversified methods of growing sweet potatoes is really paying off! We have already harvest from raised beds hay bales, and now we are ready to harvest sweet potatoes that we grew in black food grade plastic containers. Sweet potatoes growing in containers maybe be one of our favorite new methods!
We grew 5 different varieties of sweet potatoes in these containers, Beauregard, Hannah, Japanese Red, Georgia Jet, and Purple Passion. Each of these varieties has a different shape, test, and style of growing. Some varieties we will for sure grow again, and some we will likely only grow in a raised bed in the future.
We propagated the Hannah and Japanese Red varieties from organic, store bought sweet potatoes, and the rest we purchased as slips online.
One of the best parts about growing in containers is the ease of harvest. We are able to simply remove the foliage and flip the containers, and the results of our container experiment speak for themselves.
Another benefit of this style is you can really vary the size of your container garden to fit the space you have.
We think you are going to enjoy the harvest, and hopefully be inspired to try this growing method on your own.

Eat those leaves. They are awesome tasting greens and you can stir fry the stems of the leaves and the vines. The stir fried stems reminds me of green beans and the leaves taste alot like spinach and have more of a collard chewiness.

What size are these containers?
Thanks so much. Growing in Florida allows me to grow sweet potatoes year round. All in large and small bins. If I see one sticking out I gently dig down and if it meets my approval, I pick it. haha. I reach down for others in that bin but if none appear... I add more soil and let them keep growing. My dog and I have to eat all of these abundant potatoes. Grow Like weeds really.

How are you storing them?
We have them in a room in our basement that stays about 60 degrees all winter. Last year they lasted until about April that way. They are payed out single layer.

We really had good luck in containers this year, and I think for sweet potatoes that is the way to go. That or raised beds. We have found the greatest success in those two methods. Best of luck with your planting. What zone are you in?

That is some of the gratest seed potatoes I have ever seen.dont get me wrong, they are good for pies or for what ever dise you want, but grate for seed sweetpotatoes.
I got 35 pounds of sweet potatoes from a single Murasaki sweet potato slip. The vine took over 40 sq. ft. of my garden, crowding out some of my melons and cucumbers.

That's an impressive harvest.
I threw some slips in the ground last year that I'd grown to see how easy it was. It was far too late in the season but I still got a small harvest out of them despite the ground being compacted, them only getting watered once or twice by accident, and being overrun with weeds.
Considering how well they grew with complete neglect, I'm going to see how big I can get them this year now that it is nearing the end of the spring weather here.

Wow, you did good!! I had to take mine out after coming back from my trip. They didn't get watered much while I was gone. They were real small, but...if they had the time to grow I would've had a bunch of them. : ) It was an experiment, though, as I planted the slips late.
That is exactly what happened with the sweet potatoes we planted late. An experiment that we likely will not repeat next year, and may do more carrots instead of late slips. They really need that nice, warm soil for sure.

Hello! Great question! We cure them for a few weeks and then store them in a room that is around 60 degrees all winter, so they last for months, and we have a ton of different recipes we use them in. They are definitely a staple in our house. Have you grown them before?
This is great, Im trying a slip right now with my deep purple organic sweet tator cut in half🍠 but, after a few weeks nothing growing yet, just some white haze at the very bottom of it 😟so what’s going on with that? I’m wondering with no help at my age will I be able to lift those buckets 🪣 all alone. God bless, please answer Thank you 🙏

Outstanding video and amazing results! I tried growing sweet potatoes for the first time - in Georgia Red Clay mixed with mulch - EPIC fail. What size containers did you use and what type of soil did you use?
Clay can be rough for those sweet potatoes, even though it is nutrient dense, they struggle to grow to the size you want. These containers are 18 gallons, and the soil we use is a mix of peat moss, sand, topsoil, compost, and then nutrients. @@GutenGardening I put my slips in straight into the ground. The return was not very good for the amount of slips. I am thinking I need to try a different variety
Oh interesting. What variety did you grow? We went out of our way to try a wide variety to see which performed the best. And that is one of the benefits of container growing for these. We don't have to worry about soil compaction because of the mix we made.
@@GutenGardening I got Beauregard because that was what the local feed and seed store had. I will look for other varieties for the up coming year. I will try this Beauregard again in a pot and see if I get a better return. I did plant in 2 different areas of the yard one was more packed and the other was super fluffy and well composted in. We used both sweet potato slips that we purchased as well as slips that we propagated ourselves from organic store bought potatoes. Both turned out well for us. :) Do you grow sweet potatoes this way?

1. For the Japanese red, I don't think we will stick with the containers, but for the others, the containers are so mobile and easy to work with and harvest and care for, it seems like they are a quick way to add growing potential when you have limited space like we do.
2. Sweet potatoes will grow in ambient temps of 18-35c but definitely prefer the warmer side for best growth.
Man this just gets more epic. How many pounds total out of your whole harvest?
So far, we are at about 160 lbs. :) Not too shabby for such a small space, huh? :)

@@GutenGardening I’ve only had the regular orange fleshed store sweet potato and now the purple/reddish skinned white fleshed from the store they call boniato. I’m not able to order seed potatoes so I just grow from store bought and right now prefer the white fleshed boniato. No clue of the actually variety name.
That old mean vole or mouse damage stinks. Other than that, great harvest!

Guten Yardening , yes, I did in a row in my garden. Planted them sort of later than I should have but they still did ok. Next year I will definitely plant earlier. Thankfully no vole or rodent damage.
The no vole/rodent damage is huge, and we definitely learned our lesson in terms of planting some a little late. Definitely want that longer time in the warm soil. Have a wonderful day!
@@GutenGardening I would cover the containers with a mesh and maybe plug the largest hole you have. The plants will still grow but the critters can’t get in.

Hello, are you in the Chicago area? I don’t really know what zone 5 means... also, how did you make sure the sweet potato containers were kept warm? Here, we see farmers growing sweet potatoes in hoop houses to get decent yields.
Hello CW, we are actually a few hours north of the Chicago area, so probably slightly cooler weather than you overall. That being said, we use black containers to help with the heat, and we try our best to give them the longest growing season. We also put some straw on top, but really, beyond that, we just keep them in sunny areas. So far, we have been pleased with the results.
Hello! Was it you that did a video of planting sweet potatoes in containers. Start with a thin layer of soil on the bottom, let the vine grow, bury the vine with soil, let it grow, bury it, etc until the pot is completely full of soil? I’m trying to find who made that video! Thanks!

I will say, that method would work just fine, since you are trying to get those nodes under the soil to sprout, but you would need a longer growing season for them to produce well. I hope that helps. :)
@@GutenGardening Thanks. I have these 25 gallon pots and I’m worried that if I plant sweet potatoes at the top it won’t develop sweet potatoes throughout the entire pot. The length of the growing season doesn’t matter to me because I can grow year-round in Florida.

Thank you! These containers came from Menards. I am not sure if they in stock there right now. They were only $7. The ones that I can find on amazon (amzn.to/3hKIv5y) are a good bit more expensive. Hopefully they come back in stock soon!

We put 3 per container. The basic rule of thumb is between 1-3 pounds per slip. :)

That is a tough question. :) We love varieties so much, lol. Maybe the Hannah because of overall production, but the Purple Passion are really awesome too. Georgia Jet did great as well. So many options. :)
What kind of soil mix are you using to grow sweet potatoes in the container?
The mix is a base of coco coir, peat moss, and a little of our native soil. We then add some vermiculite and perlite and then fertilize it.

@@GutenGardening Yes...right now,I have about 15 to 20 slips...should be ready in couple of weeks. I plan to experiment with planting some in different area and method...just to see which will be better yield regards to size& quantity. One thing I have not seen yet is planting 1 slip in a big gallon container..just to see what it will do...lol...love the mystery of nature...so EXCITING... Its like hunting for treasure except with SP's, its guaranteed you will get something:))
Agreed completely! Sweet potato treasure. I think getting a yield of about 3lbs for each slip is a good goal for sweet potatoes, but like you said, we have never tried a single slip in a large container, so we would also be interested in seeing what the results of that would look like. :)

What is vole damage? What causes it and is it dangerous to your harvest? Can you still eat the potato? Is it only sweet potato to have vole damage? Whew!! That was a lot of questions. Sorry. This will be my first year trying to grow potatoes.
Voles are small rodents that can cause damage to plants by eating the roots, stems, and tubers. In the case of potato or sweet potato plants, they can damage the tubers or sweet potato roots, which can drastically reduce the yield. We typically do not eat the produce if there is extensive damage, but some people have reported that it is safe to eat if you cut off the damaged portions. To minimize vole damage, you can try planting your potatoes or sweet potatoes in raised beds or containers and using wire mesh to protect the tubers or roots. hello.. I just saw your first container and ask one thing. why the color of sweet potatos is different in one container? have same quality or lack of some nutrients? what's the reason?
Great question! The difference in color is because we planted multiple varieties in each one. Overall, we planted about 7 different varieties of sweet potatoes this past season, and each has a unique color (both inside and out). If you continue watching, you will see that some are white/tan, some red, some orange, and some purple. Each has their own unique taste as well. :) Do you grow your own sweet potatoes?

It is at the top of our favorites list for vegetables to grow. We have done several videos on harvests and slip propagation, etc. They are so tasty and have a fantastic shelf life.
