Here's my third row seat modification on my wife's 2010 Honda CR-V

• Honda CR-V 3rd Row Sea...
This was a very old video and I have sold the car a few years back, but since there are a lot of questions I would try to make a FAQ answers:
1. This was made using Toyota Avanza or Daihatsu Xenia's 3rd row seat.
2. I traced the contour of the floor and made a wooden floorboard accordingly and wrap them with flooring carpet.
4. You have to fit the seat directly in the car and measure so the headrest fit against the hatch and everything is secured and doesn't budge.
5. I mount the seat to the board using pipe wall mounting (the -u- shaped ones)
6. For the folding type ones, I replicate the lock mechanism by making a hole in the plywood and attached a custom made latch bar.
7. You can mount the floorboard using a custom very long bolt attached to the spare tire mounting nut. But this will make it harder to take out the seats when you are not using them (obviously)
8. You can make seat belts attachments but you'd have to drill holes on the side trimming, body frame and floor. But I'm not an engineer so,.. do that at your own risk. I used this car mainly around my complex averaging maybe 10 mph, so I didn't bother to do that.
9. I don't make this anymore because the car has been sold, and shipping internationally would costs a fortune because it's big, bulky and quite heavy.
I hope this answers most of the questions and satisfy all the yay and nay sayers.. :)

For those of u in US & Canada, I found a company called little passenger seats in Modesto California making solid looking custom made 3rd row bench seats for certain SUVs such as CRV, Rav4.
As of this writing, they have gone out of business.

I am impressed!!! Almost tempting, except that the total load capacity on a Honda CRV is 800 lbs, including driver and all luggage. If you can keep that in mind when loading passengers and luggage, then it shouldn't be a problem.
Well I have quite a light family. Now that you've told me the limit. I actually did calculate the weight of all my family is still under 600 lbs. So with luggage and maybe a guest it'll still be under the 800 lbs. 😆
Very nicely done. I've always wondered why Honda doesn't offer something like this as an option. The RAV4 has this option. I have a 2010 CRV EX and over the past 4 years, I've been having to live with just 5 seats and 6 people (5 adult and 1child) ... I don't need the extra seating for long road trip; just up the highway about 25 kms and back. Good work.
I believe only this 3rd generation CRV that does not have an optional 3rd row seat kit. The first, second and the fourth gen have 3rd row seat option at some point. But they are very rare and expensive. That's why I made them. :)
Dear Stoner, nice work. I bought a Korean SUV as I need the 3rd row about 5 years ago. Toyota Fortuner offers the 3rd row as well but it is just too bulky and engine capacity is just too big for my liking. However, now latest Nissan X-Trail has offered the same and I was told next generation CRV will equips with these additional seats. Maybe I will change to a Japanese make next round, however, need to compliment your DIY effort.

looks perfect, like factory production.. And even with seatbelts.. Do you have an agent bringing it in to malaysia yet? I dont think it will be properly street legal though and it will be an install at own risk.. I doubt this can be approved by authorities.. So it probably has to be brought in through the grey market.

No it won't fit the 2005 model, the floor board will be different in shape, to make one is possible but to ship it to India would cost around at least 100 USD using regular mail, and 400 USD using EMS

Great video. On the 2011 Honda CRV SE, do the the rear seats (2nd row) totally fold all the down or tumble so that the kids can walk into the 3rd row seat I am going to install
+schath123 I believe on all 3rd and 4th gen CRV models the 2nd row seat can be folded and tumbled over to the front. AFAIK.

It's now in version 2.0... I've modified the base, so just put the seats in, no drilling whatsoever..

Unless you're over 6 feet tall, it should be okay. But for long journeys the minimal legroom could be an issue. So better let the kids have it. :)

Well it's the third row seat of a small mpv called Toyota Avanza a.k.a Daihatsu Xenia. I don't know if it's available in your country though.

sorry late reply, it's a DIY project, I use toyota avanza's third row seat, and just make the mounts and fixed them to the floorboard (version 2.0)

+MARTA DRAGOMIR well, this is just a DIY project for me, I don't think this will pass any safety standard test, you can add seatbelts but you have to modify the interior for the seatbelt mounts.

Hi, is this permanent or detachable?
If detachable , how was the stability? since you just placed the entire seat not holding or screwing on to something?. Im thinking if in case that you make a hard stop then the whole seat might be carried away along with the person seating on it.
it's detachable, and no it won't budge because it can't move anywhere after you close the hatch (afaik), but you can make it permanent by bolting to the floor, although to get to the spare tyre you have to take it off again.

Well it's the third row seat of Toyota Avanza or Daihatsu Xenia, a small MPV made and sold here in Indonesia jointly by Toyota & Daihatsu, I don't know if it's available in KL. Hope that helps.

Fixing the seats directly to the car floor is not safe and illegal (in Malaysia). If you take out your factory car seats, you will see that all seats screws are fixed onto the "bone". JPJ will not approve it at all. My friend once modify his van by fixing seats directly onto the van floor and not approved :)

This is the same question that Im thinking, how tight is the seat that you will place there since it is not screwed onto something.?
you can bolt it to the floor using the spare tire nut by making a custom extra long bolt. I haven't had the chance to make one though.. because this one doesn't move when the seats is laid back and the hatch is closed. I know this won't pass any safety regulation though.. :)
Bolting using the spare tire nut is a good idea.. luckily the spare tire is located inside the boot, not involve and drilling, and it sounds safer than bolting it directly onto the floor :)
Btw, for more leg room space, you can reverse facing the seats instead of forward facing. much safer in terms of safety for the third row seat... since there are no 3 point seat belts just like the mercedes e series estate. furthermore passengers can get inside easily from the rear boot door. but as passenger, it would be uncomfortable view facing

You have to remove the seats first. But it's easy no bolts just pick it up and get it out.
