30 YEARS OF EXPO 92 IN SEVILLE
🇬🇧 On April 20, 1992, the Universal Exhibition of Seville, popularly known as "Expo '92" or "La Expo", opened its doors. The exhibition, which lasted 6 months and commemorated the V Centenary of the Discovery of America, welcomed 112 countries, 23 international organizations, 6 companies and the Spanish autonomous communities. The place chosen for the exhibition was the Isla de la Cartuja because it was an ideal place due to its proximity to the city center, its location on the banks of the Guadalquivir and the freedom that a free piece of land of such an extension gave, simply occupied by a ruined monastery, which was presumably where Christopher Columbus prepared his first voyage to America. Expo 92 marked a before and after not only for the city of Seville but for all of Spain. During the 176 days that Expo 92 remained open, 41.8 million people visited it.
30 years after its celebration, many things have changed and a large part of the constructions that were made in the enclosure have disappeared, although some elements are still standing, such as the iconic Bioclimatic Sphere or pavilions such as the one from Hungary or Morocco, among others. The island of La Cartuja is currently the headquarters of the Isla Mágica leisure park and Parque Científico y Tecnológico de Sevilla, which already houses some 550 companies and entities with more than 24,000 workers, in addition to having spaces for administrative, university and equipment for the city.
Hope you enjoy this tour of the Cartuja de Sevilla.

This was certainly an interesting tour, and finally I'm a little more rested and de-stressed. 😉 Thirty years ago, wow - I was trying to think if I remember Expo 92 back then. I'm sure I heard about it - I definitely remember the Barcelona Olympics in '92. I was living in California back then.
Anyway, at the beginning I think I saw a 'homeless' man under the bridge (not sure though). We got that here, but especially in California. Lots of it in California. In fact, if you ever plan to visit California, it's a very different place these days. Personally, I would not visit LA, San Francisco or NYC, (or Chicago, or ...) Not safe, unfortunately. Anyway, back to happier thoughts.
I just happened to notice the man playing guitar at the beginning, right after hearing the beautiful opening guitar music. 🙂 Seemed very appropriate! I think the bridge going across the river seemed simple, elegant and strong - a good welcome to the expo.
I love how they named the streets after so many of the great scientists and inventors of the past. Interesting that Columbus prepared for his voyage to America there. Never knew that! Sadly, Boston just took down its statue of Columbus.
Some parts of the expo seem lively with science and tech companies (and Magic Island), and some seem like a ghost town from the past - like the Climatic Sphere. I try to imagine what it was like with all those millions of people there in '92. Now that I think of it, what happened to the olympic site in Barcelona after '92?
The EU pavilion was interesting - I could see the flags on the exterior of the building in back of the statue/sculpture. And the sculpture - given that the Maastricht Treaty was in Feb. of '92, I guess it was meant to represent the European countries coming together in a warm embrace. (seems like they're naked too 😁😉)
I thought the Mexican pavilion was interesting. I was trying to figure out the significance of the "X" shape at the end of the building, where the entrance and sculpture are located. I liked that sculpture a lot too. Still looks very impressive 30 years later. The colorful tiles reminded me of a Mexican plaza.
The Moroccan pavilion was beautiful. Great combination of classical style with the modern glass box structures that integrated together perfectly. Beautiful! That building has aged well over these past 30 years.
Was that a mock-up of an Ariane rocket?
The art exhibit at 36:23 put a smile on my face. Very well done, looked so real. And that building looked so Spanish too! The shot at 42:18 was excellent. Beautifully framed. Didn't expect to see a Primark there. 🙂
Very enjoyable video for a Saturday night. 👍

Hello! I'm glad to hear you're not so stressed anymore. I appreciate you finding time to watch my tours. I am also glad that you liked this tour, I thought that maybe it would not be as interesting for you as the rest because this event is almost forgotten outside of Spain. Surely outside of Spain the Olympic Games in Barcelona are much more remembered, although here both are equally remembered because they greatly improved the image of Spain to the rest of the world. In answer to your question about the Olympic venue, it is preserved almost exactly the same as it was 30 years ago, although at the moment the Olympic stadium is hardly used (although I think that Barcelona FC will play there soon while it remodels its stadium). I hope to visit Barcelona soon and film a tour there.
Yes, I know that some cities in California have problems related to homeless, in Seville there are also problems related to poverty although they are located in very specific places in the suburbs of the city. Seville has some of the poorest neighborhoods in Spain. I suppose that with the crisis and the pandemic they would have increased. I did not notice the man playing the guitar until you said so 😄
This bridge was the main entrance to the Expo site, it is called the Barqueta bridge, although I personally prefer the Alamillo bridge, designed by Calatrava and in the shape of a harp, you can see it at the beginning of the tour at the bottom of the river.
I also did not know the fact that Christopher Columbus could have prepared his first trip to America there, I discovered it while looking for information about the expo. It is a curious historical fact and it really is a very beautiful monastery and it must have been very quiet at that time. It is a pity that they demolish statues of Columbus there (also in Latin American countries). I think it's a mistake, history should be treated within its context and historical events should not be judged from the perspective and ethics that prevail at a given time. If that were the case, the history of Spain should be completely erased 😄
I think you are always very accurate in your assessments and you have expressed the same feeling that I (and I think many people in Seville) have about La Cartuja today. On the one hand, it is positive that a large part of the site has been reconverted with companies, faculties and a leisure park, but on the other hand, there are still many places that are abandoned or that are barely maintained and give a feeling of degradation in the area. Fortunately, more and more companies are installing and they restore pavilions or build new buildings on empty lots. I hope that these degraded areas will disappear.
The EU pavilion was one of the most iconic during the exhibition and I share your interpretation of the sculpture, although currently the EU seems more like a marriage of convenience 😄
Regarding the Mexico pavilion, my interpretation is that "X" is a sign of identity, since it appears in the name of the country (MeXico), just as "ñ" is the sign of identity of Spain (España). Also in Spanish we pronounce Mejico instead of Mexico and it is possible that with that "X" they wanted to make it clear that Mexico is written with X and not with J 😆
I agree with you, the Moroccan pavilion is one of the ones that has aged the best. It is currently the Three Cultures Foundation. As a curiosity, regarding the US pavilion, unfortunately it was demolished and replaced by the Faculty of Communication. It was located next to the New Zealand pavilion (19:50 this building that is seen directly from the front). It was one of the largest pavilions and in it a copy of the first ten amendments of the US Constitution was exhibited (it was the first time that an original document of the constitution left the US)
Regarding the Ariane rocket, you are right, it is a full-scale reproduction.
I'm glad you liked that shot.
Lately Primark appears everywhere and where you least expect it 😆
Thank you very much for your visit. As always, it is a pleasure to answer your messages. Have a nice and calm 😉 week
