Being in a community of lock companies, we all agree that ANY lock is a but a deterrent - not a guarantee. The stronger the deterrent the more secure your trailer, house or whatever you are trying to protect. There is a point where the cost of the deterrent becomes prohibitive. We at Ft. Knox Locks try to find that middle ground by offering various options at different cost levels as ways to deter thieves.
Security is primarily deterrent not defeat. Huge screaming yellow metal is already a fantastic detterent.. but if it actually locked the wheels up . They're gonna have to raise hell to get anything anywhere.. thats about all you can ask from lock security... Interesting product 👍
Instant jack!
Just to address a couple of common questions/comments in this thread. The hub is intended to stay on unless there is a need to change a tire. You can of course take it off if you are concerned about it especially if it makes you over 102”. We developed this lock in response to a challenge from one of the top 5 largest trailer/equipment rental companies in the nation to use on their rental fleet. An exact prototype was submitted by them to the US DOT for approval before we moved forward with manufacturing and the US DOT gave a thumbs up with the exception of when it causes the overall width to “officially” exceed 102”. There are things that exceed 102” on various rigs such as some of those extra long spiked lug nuts and extended mirrors. The actual wheels of many 102” deck over trailers are recessed a few inches inside the 102” which would make this design legal. Additionally there are DOT 3” exceptions for numerous minor items such as tarping, hand holds, turn signal lamps, “non property carrying devices” and others with some allowing that 3” on both sides. Although not officially on the list we believe we may fall into those exceptions for most interpretations. We actually did do quite a bit of homework on this project.
I really appreciate your thoural yet honest reviews. Bookmarked the site for my trailer!
Definitely going to look into those.
Interesting
Who! Love how heavy That product is. Love that this will give some thieves a hard time to get your stuff. But if you live in a area that you need this that Sad and people should not steal stuff. Thank you for the review! Have a good day!
Aluminum lock body seems like an inherent design flaw. With how heavy and strong everything else is, that lock body should be hardened steel ... otherwise it's probably done for in under a minute with a small 12v drill. Or heck, you could split the lock body with any of a dozen methods if it's just aluminum...i'm thinking a wedge and a few good slams with a mallet even.
That's so odd driving around with a yellow hub, it would be nice for a quick connect feature
Throw a jack under it, put a wheel dolly, and send it. In fact, drive this one forward, let the wheel lift up and back it off onto a dolly. I've seen someone do this before with a wheel locked trailer. Wheel dolly, winched it onto a bigger trailer, and off they went. No coupler connection, they used a winch, coupler lock stayed on. Under a minute. This is just a deterrence like any lock. Since someone might try it, slap something on it to retain the lock to the frame of the trailer. Doesn't need to hold forever, some rope underneath or even tape might do it. Otherwise it may still fall and catch. Takes an extra 30 seconds or so I'd assume. Thieves are some of the craftiest people out there. Stay safe.
You're right. if someone really wants to steal something from you, then they will steal it.
I'm not sure I'd put that on any of my trailers, only for the fact of having that mounting system sticking out of the wheel after removing the locking system. I wouldn't want to have to remove it every time I need to use the trailer. Still a neat concept for sure.
I hate to ask stupid questions, but sometimes I just can't help myself. So Is the large yellow gadget on the wheel that sticks out past the fenders supposed to stay on the trailer when in use? Or, are you supposed to remove that piece when using the trailer which would make it pretty inconvenient? Just curious.
The hub part stays on. Home Depot submitted the design to US DOT as they are starting to use these on their equipment rental fleet and they came back with a "thumbs up" as long as the overall width doesn't exceed 102". None of HD's trailers exceed that width.
I think it was asked before, does the 7 1/2 pound piece that fits over the lugs stay on when the lock is not in use? If so, the added weight (on one axle) is ok for the tire, axle, etc.? Thanks
Yes, and we tested the balancing extensively to ensure it was not an issue
Interesting. Very cool product, thanks for the reply.
They should've sent it to LockPickingLawyer. He'd tell them EXACTLY what he thinks about the puck lock included with it.
We asked him to, and he said he would not touch abloy on camera
McNally
@@zezoo2107 Who?
@@ColtonRMagby gotta look him up he’s a lot more entertaining than lockpickinawyer
@@zezoo2107 I'm subscribed to him, but he hasn't uploaded in a while, so I forgot he even existed. My bad.
Good concept but…band saw sawzall or grinder two minutes tops
Or even some C4, detcord, or tannernite if noise isn't a concern
@@BigTruckBigRV Yeah darn it, shotguns are noisy too!
Obviously we all know McNally would pick it with another lock
But for the average Joe yeah it be pretty hard
Looks like a good product, my only concern is that cone that goes over the lugnuts, it doesnt look to be very sturdy, and someone with a cordless grinder could knock that off in less than a minute, then take the bolts off and voila.
In our experience 99.9% of thieves absolutely hate making lots of noise and drawing attention to themselves, we have over 70,000 trailers protected in the US and Canada and have had less than 10 successful thefts (that we know of) most thieves (when encountering deterrence of this nature) will just move on to an easier target.
It looks very robust. My only recommendation is to use a different locking mechanism such that someone can’t access with a drill bit. Those cylinders can be drilled out with the proper tools. Otherwise it’s bulletproof.
This particular style/core has specialized deterrence against drilling, it's one of the reasons it is the most expensive puck lock we have
I feel really bad that people live in an. Area where they have to have such an item to lock up their stuff very sad.
so you have a big ugly yellow cone on your wheel. what about throwing off the wheel balance are those things perfectly balanced or just 12lb hunks of steel on your balanced wheel could adding such a thing void the warranty on your trailer or it's axles ?
We designed it specifically to be balanced and tested it extensively to ensure that was the case. We also had an official DOT inspection to make sure it was OK, (as long as the total width does not exceed 8'6")
@@Chadwickodom92 Fair enough 👍
JD, take a look at your trailer, looks like your equalizer is seized in place and wasn’t moving. As I saw you lift the front tire off the ground, and when the lock was lifting the trailer, it didn’t look like your equalizer was pivoting at all
That would be awesome if a cordless sawzall was NEVER invented…. But 30 seconds with a metal blade…. And trailer is gone !

If someone wants this trailer, all is needed is to flatten the tire and suspend the lever lock.
We actually defeated this lock on a repo trailer.
1 min.., backed trailer up so leg was against bottom of trailer. Wrapped chain around leg to pocket with snap binder. Let air out of tire and on our way. Same way you chain up an axle if you blow a wheel bearing. It was actually easier with this in place.
Kinda to easy.
Objectively that absolutely cannot be true, since this just became available to the public in the last week, so I don't know what lock you are referring to but it isn't this one
In a few minutes with cordless grinder/cut off wheel the thief is going down the road

could probably just back it up to raise the bar and put a roller on the bar and go. You couldn't go super far or fast but. Even easier a portable band saw. If a thief wants it he/she will get it. But it does keep honest people honest.
Could probably just rent a crane and lift the whole trailer 😂
Also even if you put a roller under the bar, you are still going to flat spot the tire after a couple dozen yards
Stab the tire, secure the bar to the front with a c clamp. Stolen.
I bet yea i can still steel it! give me a few and i'll show yea
Many people could.... The question is if you would get caught, shot, or simply go to an easier target.
Sorry but my 6" angle grinder would make short work of that thing.
An angle grinder will cut through literally anything, all locks are deterrents meant to provide stumbling blocks for potential thieves, hopefully to the point the just move on to an easier target
Wont really matter when you forget its there and tear the side of a car open or hurt a pedestrian.
Its also simply NOT legal to operate on public roads being it will put your trailer over the legal width of 102 inches or like they say 8 ft 6 inches wide. Bright yellow of coarse you’ll draw attention to the fact your over width. Should have rethought this one. Purely a mistake.
That is Incorrect according to the DOT's CFR part 658 US Code 49,3111,3112,3113 and 3114
Also it sticks out 3 inches past the tire wall, if you are driving close enough to a pedestrian or car to hit it you have a whole other problem on your hand
Wonderful until you get caught in a dot stop. If your running a 102 wide trailer which 99% of us are? You screwed. Its over the 102 inch wide law.
Also there is a simple way to by pass. Wrap a chain around unit and chain it to pocket. Let the air out of tire. We actually repoed a trailer with one having never seen one.
Kinda ridiculous actually and not well thought out. Only took us 2 mins to defeat another 5 mins at the shop to get rid of it.
As mentioned in an above comment we had an official DOT inspection to ensure it met regulations and as long as the total width of the trailer is less than 8'6" wide you are golden (it only sticks out about 4 inches)
As with any deterrent ever made it is all about adding 1 more hurdle, 1 more challenge, 1 more thing to make your trailer less attractive to be stolen so that the thieves move on to an easier target.
