RM used the quote of choreographer Martha Graham, “a dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the more painful.” Black Swan is about when an artist loses their passion for their art. The dancing shadows represent their psychological shadows as they “drown” in their fear of losing passion for their craft. The video is also influenced by the movie Black Swan.
it is indeed contemporary. the person who's performing the solo dance is Jimin, vocalist and on of the main dancers, he's trained in multiple different dance styles but he's a major in contemporary. he's also trained in multiple different martial arts and a black belt in taekwondo.
I love watching professional dancers react to Jimin, because they admire him from an expert's perspective - and it's by watching them that I realized that part of what makes his dancing unique is that he's brought martial arts and several dance styles together.
Unlike Blackpink BTS has substance in their lyrics, I really recommend not skipping the lyrics. Also they are the best live performers and do recommend watching some live performances. Even their solo performances are amazing. If you go to enjoy bts more channels, they have live performances with English subtitles. Jimin solo of Lie one of my favorite songs from him. Also, Epiphany by Jin is another great solo.
@@sal1710 No its no lie. Lets be real most kpop group have dont write their music and the lyrics mean shit , but so what. My point was that bts army are the most toxic and disgusting people on this planet, and they will prove it everyday. As a huge fan of both Bts and Blackpink i just find it sad that the only reason its embarrassing to say you are a kpop fan its because of Armys.
The title itself is inspired by the movie Black Swan but in this song, BTS is acknowledging their deepest fears of losing their passion for music. They are terrified that the thing that made them feel everything - their music - will make them feel nothing."I've been always afraid if this can no longer resonate," RM raps, "No longer make my heart vibrate / Then like this may be how I die my first death." And then Jimin sings, "No song affects me anymore / Crying a silent cry." They are burnt out by the thing they love the most. But they have hope and don’t let it completely paralyze them. "Slowly, I open my eyes I’m in my workroom, it’s my studio," Suga raps. "The waves go darkly by in a throe / But I’ll never get dragged away again." Jin then cries out, "Nothing can devour me / I shout out with ferocity. And choosing instead to use those fears to grow creatively. Borrowing heavily from modern dance, they created an artistic spectacle that's so beautiful it demands the audience to hold their breath, if only for a moment. Many BTS' MVs also have explanation by mostly from hardcore ARMYs. Here's the link of Bookish Theory on Black Swan ua-cam.com/video/PRdSXnBqkak/v-deo.html By the way, some reactors would first react to the color coded audio with lyrics only so they can pay attention to the lyrics and try to get the meaning of the song then they would dive into the MVs and if they still can't understand the symbolism and deep poetic lyrics of BTS' songs, they would also react to BTS' MV explanation. I suggest you do the same if you want to continue reacting to BTS' MVs. ARMYs don't mind watching long reaction videos from those who are reacting to our boys. The one dancing solo is Jimin, vocalist and main dancer (with J-hope as the main dancer and dance leader). He is trained in contemporary dance, ballet. He studied hip-hop, locking and popping as well. He is also trained in several martial arts such as kendo, taekwondo (black belt), hapkido and Chinese martial arts. If you want to know them individually, I suggest you react to A Guide to BTS: The Bangtan Members by Taylor. Thanks for reacting to BTS. BORAHAE💜💜💜
This is a great comment. But I also urge you to look up the meaning of black swan event, and think about how that plays into the very existence of BTS themselves.
One caveat about the color coded lyric videos, I've noticed that often they are produced very soon after release of a song (rushed?) and seem to be inaccurate or not good delivery of the poetry/imagery. The Enjoy BTS More channel has videos with well-researched and synced captions, I highly recommend them.
In regards to your difficulty focusing overall, unless it's a lyric video, you can watch twice. First, for listening and viewing and the second time, on the lyrics. ARMY don't mind and love long genuine in-depth reactions when it comes to BTS. With BTS, lyrics do matter a lot and they work hard to make it meaningful and worthwhile when it comes to their productions. This is just a suggestion, you can run however you like. Thought it might help.😊
@@PrymalChaos or you can just read the lyrics without music .Maybe even on your own, especially if you use 'Bangtan Doolset' . They explain a lot! Me , when I just want to know the lyrics, I like to use 'Genius'. If you read the lyrics beforehand, U can concentrate on the music and the visuals.
@@PrymalChaos Some reactors watch once without lyrics to focus on visuals and sound and then again to pay attention to the lyrics. BTS is a thinking person's music and in most songs, lyrics are very important. So much so that there are websites and UA-cam channels dedicated to breaking down the meaning in their lyrics, as well as breaking down the meaning in the visuals in their MVs. Their music is often layered, with a surface meaning of universal themes, then personal stories hidden within, often political and deeper meanings under that, and sometimes BU content as well (Bangtan Universe) the supernatural mystery storyline that runs through a bunch of their music.
You won't regret falling into the Bangtan rabbit hole. The venue is the Los Angeles Theater. They filmed Black Swan and ON while they were also in LA for their first Grammy performance. The Black Swan MV was a total surprise. There was no hint that it would have a MV. Which is kind of cool because the phrase Black Swan also means: an unpredicted or unforseen event. To add: technically it was their second Grammy performance but it was their first solo stage at the Grammys.
Small correction - Jimin does have the background in contemporary dance but he is not the lead vocalist, though he is an amazing vocalist with a unique voice.
I left a comment earlier but came back to share an opinion about the importance of performance in the BTS experience. Many reactors state that their usual preference is listening to the studio version-- that it is the authentic rendition of the song. There are reactors who rarely reacted to live performances until ARMY begged them to do so. I cannot count the number of times that the reactor gains an entirely new appreciation once seeing the members perform it live. I know that some reactors come at it from their area of expertise --producers so prefer studio versions, dancers prefer dance practices , vocal coaches disect each note sung but if you exclude BTS's live performances you will miss their unique magic.
@@PrymalChaos I have to so agree with this comment-their LIVE performances are incredible, but regardless, you can not go wrong just continuing to fall down the BTS rabbit hole-you will NEVER regret it!
@@PrymalChaos black swan live performances is on another level . Their live in recent LA concert is breathtaking . BTS concerts have no guess acts . They perform for almost 2 hours plus signing live while doing dance choreographies which further tells the story of the song. Just their Wings album you will see how diverse their music are as a group and as each solo member. I listen to classical and operas also. and am into BTS. They are a complete package artists.
And to top everything off….they actually WRITE most of their music. They are a once in a generation group, make no mistake. They do not stick to one style and do everything from rock, blues, R&B, hip hop, jazz and more. Never boring and always fresh and new. Totally amazing group! 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜🇨🇦
"Once in a generation" is putting it too mildly I think. They have already been together years longer than the Beatles, and with no internal conflicts or external scandals, no substance abuse and domestic violence like John Lennon for instance. Plus, they are world class dancers as well as performers, singers, songwriters and producers, models, actors, and reality/documentary and variety show stars.
“I’m a little careful to talk about K-pop as a genre because I don’t want to be defining Kpop as a genre”, he told Goldman. “I’m a little bit wary of that but I think rather than approach Kpop as a genre, a better approach would be ‘integrated content.' K-pop includes not just the music, but the clothes, the makeup, the choreography…all these elements I think sort of amalgamate together in a visual and auditory content package, that I think sets it apart from other music or maybe other genres so again, as I said, rather than approach K-pop as it’s own genre I think approaching it as this integration of different content would be better.”-Suga of BTS Their is an amazing interview that this came from and if you are interested I will put the link under this comments. BTS doesn’t usually get great interviews (especially from the west) for many reason but most because they don’t take them and their music seriously, so when you actually have a really good interview it is really surprising and awesome. Excluding solo stuff I can count on like one hand good interviews BTS have gotten. 14:49 I will like to say, yes, just like any other group including BTS they have a big team behind them. However, BTS are involved with EVERYTHING. RM has talked about how he (and maybe sometimes some other members) get to talk about what music videos and stuff are going to look like, etc. alongside their behind the scenes team. They (BTS) are involved with the creative process, because it is their art and MV/dance is another way to showcase and present and add to their art
Jimin is the dancer you see in all those solo shots, he's also the shadow dancing behind the first rapper, Suga. Jimin entered Busan arts high school at the top of his class for dance, he masters everything pretty quickly but his background is very much contemporary. He's the one with the dark blue hair. There is also a behind the scenes video of them shooting his solo shots, definitely worth a watch! 💜
Hello. All BTS members are wonderful. They sing, dance, compose, produce and are musicians. ARMY (their fandom), support them 100%. The guy who does the contemporary dance is Jimin. The group has 3 rappers and 4 vocals. Rappers: RM (Namjoon), JHope, Suga (Yoongi) and the vocals are: Jungkook, Jimin, Jin and V (TaeHyung). The 7 members, more than partners or friends, are considered family. The youngest started as a trainee at the age of 14; they were all teenagers. If we count the trainee time so far, they have been together for 11-12 years. They officially debuted in 2013 (this year is their 10th anniversary). They are the KPop group with the most awards of all kinds. Currently the youngest is 25 years old and the oldest is 30. The latter began his mandatory military service on December 13. I recommend that when you can react to: "ON, kinetic manifesto Film", "Fake Love", "Idol", "Mic Drop", "Run BTS" (the song, not the TV program). If you want to listen to his vocal part then I recommend: "The Truth Untold", "Your eyes tell", "Zero 0'Clock". See all with subtitles, it is very important that you know that they are saying in every song.
Most of the backup vocals were done by Jungkook which is the main vocalist of the group. But on the part of 11:26 that would be Jimin, one of the vocal lines. He can do higher than that & believe it or not he doesn’t need tuning for him to do that. He can do higher pitch. Same with the other vocal line Jin. I suggest you watch the video called Introduction to BTS, for you to know each members & what are their roles in the group.
Well now you HAVE to check out Blood, Sweat and Tears, it's an absolute work of art on every front. I'm also gonna mention Dis-ease again just because it's a great track and vastly different from the songs you've heard so far. And yea, the rabbit hole goes deep, their discography is vast and there's so SO much to discover especially when you get to the lyrically juicy songs. BTS has a lot of depth but I think it goes over many people's heads because you have to pay attention and be willing to watch some additional explanation videos on occasion (we'll let you know when that is needed, we got you) and it's just easier to write them off as just another 'pop boy band'. So Black Swan essentially explores the fear of losing your passion for music. It's on the 'Map of the soul: 7' album which is heavily inspired by Carl Jung's psychology concepts so this song is also a bit more psychological. BTS mentions 'my first death' when talking about losing passion, that is a reference to a quote by a famous dancer Martha Graham: "A dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the more painful." If you pay attention to the lyrics the song sort of has two parts. At first there is a descent into this mournful state that feels like an 'ocean floor', of having lost the most important part of yourself, which is passion for music, but that's where the artist finally has the opportunity to face themselves and realize that the passion has always been within and nothing can take it away. There's a shift in tone from here on out and the second pre-chorus, while sounds similar, now sends a message of fearlessness and inspiration. The heavy use of auto-tuney vocals could have been an attempt to make everyone sound a bit more similar and represent one 'artist' who narrates the whole story. Also the distorted vocals in the background make me think of how our insecurities and fear can make us perceive reality in a distorted way but that's just my random thought. So that's the gist of it, I tried to keep it short. Also, the dancer is Jimin and yes he's one of the main dancers, he's trained in contemporary dance and is absolutely mesmerizing!
I really love the way you describe the details in the music production. And although production is clearly your ballpark, I look forward to watching you discover how good they are live too. They are a group who truly shines live. (Oh, and kudos for actually knowing that Black Swan is based around the ballet Swan Lake - I’ve been astonished to discover through reactions how rare that is!)
First, thank you for sharing your professional views & insights on BTS’s music. And you are right that BTS & their music producing teams uses lot of vocal sounds of BTS members, distorting them digitally in different ways, use them as musical instrument sounds & layering them in their music to make their music more interesting & full sounds. Also the member who is performing contemporary dance is Jimin who is a extraordinary talented main dancer of BTS, majored in contemporary dance at Famous Busan Art high school in Korea & also sing most unique & beautiful vocal tones & colors with angelic high notes that even a lot of female vocalists couldn’t sing. And Lyrics of BTS songs might not be full poetry like Songs of Leonard Cohen, but most of the lyrics of BTS songs has very deep meaning, philosophical & inspiring messages & some of them are beautifully written with many beautiful poetry phrases.(thanks to RM, the BTS’s leader, who we named as ‘the philosophical poet of BTS’.) This is one of the important reason why BTS fans & Army loves BTS music so much. So if possible, pls, give a minute to take a look at their lyrics as well. You won’t be disappointed & you will find out why so many people in all ages, loves BTS so much!
I see that others have filled you in on the meaning of the lyrics. As you move forward, I suggest that you do not get too hung up on who is the lead or main singer, dancer, rapper. Those titles may have been important in the very beginning but after years of training and performing, they are all excellent dancers and the rappers sing and the singers rap. The roles are more important behind the scenes. Unlike in many Western boy bands, where their is a "star" and the rest are more in support of the star, all BTS group songs highlight hand offs between members throughout the performance. Throughout their 10 years, the individual members do solo work-- they were not made to choose between group and solo work. You will find that at times they perform in subgroups- 3 rappers or the 4 vocalists. All of this allows them to produce music in multiple genres. As you know, they now are all pursuing solo work partially to allow them to complete their mandatory military service but also to fully explore their individual solo work. They intend to get back to group work in 2 years. All of the members write music and lyrics. The music they produce when the reconvene as a group will benefit from all of their new experiences.
Excellent comment. I think it's fair to say that they all have different strengths, but the weakest of them in any category is still really freaking good. Building off this a little, one of the reasons they've done as well as they have is that rather than trying to enforce conformity, they were given the freedom to explore artistically. Basically, every single member worked to become the best artist he could be as well as the best member of the group. In some groups that would be a recipe for disaster, but they've always supported one another's success and insisted that we should love all seven of them. Lots of people are trying to reproduce their success now with mixed results. 😂 I welcome the attempt, though, if it means more artists get some measure of creative control and are allowed to tell authentic stories. There are plenty of other talented, hard-working performers out there who deserve a chance to shine.
It is the year of the rabbit, so welcome 💜💛 Take your own time and do your thing. There's so many ways to approach the mountain of work the boys have done.
You will find in many of their music both lyrically and visually that they used concepts from writers and thinkers like Carl Jung. There are often references to the ego, the persona and the shadow. These themes run through a lot of their work. You will be doing yourself a favor and we would love to watch you react to: An Introduction to BTS: The BangTan 7 by Taylor. It will help you understand the group better, where they came from and introductory information about each member.
...this is one of the ones where the lyrics are pretty important. You can enjoy their music from whatever perspective you want, but in many cases the lyrics are deeply meaningful, including this one. It's about the fear of dying the dancer's first death - when the dancer can no longer dance - but broadened into their very real fear of losing their passion for music. There's more to it than that - just like Hallelujah isn't just about having your heart broken - but that's the summary. I love your production notes! Thank you for sharing your expertise.
I really appreciate your ability to put into words why I find their music addictive. I love the textures they create and it was even more impressive when I found out that one of the members, Suga, is their producer. Thank you so much for providing musical context to their art!
Ironically you chose to not pay attention to the lyrics during one of their most lyric heavy songs. Most of their songs are, especially B-sides, but title tracks too. This song is about artistic burnout and after everything that happened with BTS this (oops, last) year and what was said by them, Black Swan and ON lyrics making even more sense.
The member at 6:01 is one of the two main dancers in BTS and in this song they display his solo contemporary dancing which he specializes in. Jimin is also really good at pop/lock and hip-hop styles as well 😊
A lot of reactors, watch the video first to get the vibe, then watch it again with subtitles. This song has nothing to do with the movie. This song is about "losing passion" and the first death of an artist is losing passion for their music (Craft) etc... BTS more like story tellers with their vocals, rap and dance! Thanks for the reaction! BTS Versatile Kings!
Actually, the song has everything to do with the movie, once the movie is about an artist wanting so much to be perfect that she loses the love for her art. So when she dies in the end of the movie, it doesn't scare her cause she already died to become a perfect. And this song is about their fight to perfect their art, without losing their love in the process.
Thanks for this reaction.:) I recommend ON kinetic manifesto film after Black Swan. Black Swan is a song that expresses their fear of losing their passion for music. And ON is their determination to overcome that fear and move on to the future. :) BTS member Jin said in his acceptance speech at the 2018 MAMA that BTS suddenly became famous worldwide and had a hard time for a year due to great pressure and fear. They even thought about disbanding. However, after a year of talking and contemplating with the members, they decided to stay in the industry only for the fans and members, and move forward. The albums that have been released since then are the Map of the Soul series. The albums are filled with songs that reconsider their inner self, the relationship between the seven members, and the relationship between them and fans. Black Swan, ON and Boy with Luv are one of those songs. Boy with Luv contains a message that they will fly toward fans, not the sun, with wings attached by ARMY. After listening to Black Swan, you can better understand how they feel by reading ON's lyrics. :) And at the last October's concert in Busan, SUGA told ARMY to grow old together because they will make music for another 20 or 30 years.😭 The lyrics of BTS' songs are based on their own experiences, and their albums are organic because they contain their growth narrative. It will also be fun to listen to their albums in order and analyze them. :) Oh, there're many good Black Swan live performances. These two are my favorite lives. :) BTS Black swan The Late Late Show with James Corden ua-cam.com/video/wSNd02kVv8o/v-deo.html 2020 MMA Black swan & On & Life goes on & Dynamite ua-cam.com/video/PtaP4UkZKyc/v-deo.html Suga couldn't participate in the performance due to rehabilitation after his shoulder surgery, but this is one of the masterpieces.
Hello!! Thank you so much for reacting!! Enjoyed your thoughts!! I see everyone has talked about the meaning behind the song and the inspiration behind it. Where was this filmed? In Los Angeles Theatre in the Broadway Theater District of Los Angeles Also just so you know their is a reason behind everything in BTS music videos. From them having only black and white suits, to the shadows dancing, to why one person was looking into mirrors, to the wings, etc. Shadows are kind of big thing in bts. Shadows represent temptations, fears, our trials, worries, etc. so pretty much almost anything negative. The shadows are dancing I interpret was them battling these shadows (having inner conflict). Jin standing in front of the mirrors but the reflections look back at him. It is like them facing their fears. Jimin who got the wings could represent many things; 1. The movie Black Swan 2. That the shadows are starting to creep and and make him “fly” or in other words show themselves…their are other interpretations but these are mine…their are many many more 10:48 I always thought it was this or it was a synthesized version of this instrument: The track starts with a guitar sound which sounds quite similar to the Korean traditional instrument called the gayageum, giving the song Korean cultural vibes right from the beginning. Other song recommendations: -Fake Love -Fake Love extended version (which is suppose to be more on the rock side) -Blue and Grey (live performance on TvUnplugged but I know they block but seen people just pause a lot and/or puts words over screen which is fine by us)(turn on cc) -Stay Alive by Jungkook (produced by Suga of BTS) -My Universe by Coldplay and BTS -My Universe remix by Suga (would love to hear your thoughts on the differences between the two and maybe which one you personally like better) -More by Jhope -On kinetic Manifesto Film -Wildflower by RM P.S. I have seen many reactors who will watch it twice 1. For the MV/sound of the music 2. To read the lyrics.
😅None of us scheduled a BTS rabbit hole but life happens 🤣 The one thing I will say is that for the vast majority of ARMY lyrics are very important and a large part of the reason we keep coming back. I am enjoying your perspective one the music and production, but can I recommend reading the lyrics beforehand if you're having difficulty doing it while watching. Aside from being deep and meaningful it will also help you understand some of what's going on in the mv.
They did this so well in concert. Realize they are their own worst critics and are perfectionists. They will do a take and then look at the playback and if they are not satisfied they do it again. and again until they are satisfied. Jimin is the spotlighted dancer of this one and did so amazing. He was a part of the filming with all of them but then the parts where it is just him was filmed after the rest were done and he kept going for take after take. The behind the scenes showed how much this took for him to do. He is very strong but he was so exhausted and then still did one more take of the last part where he is in black rolling on the floor even though the producer and staff was telling him it was good before then. He ends on the floor and he said he could just go to sleep right there he was so wiped. One of the best live version I found is from their Los Angeles concerts that were round this time last year and they connect it with Blue and Grey off of their BE album they did during the pandemic. ua-cam.com/video/lC61JF2T8iE/v-deo.html Just enjoy. Also you might consider Mikrokosmos next. I always look for live versions.
I knew you would be blown away by the art of this and consider the layers in production. They really wanted to it to feel like it was coming from deep underwater, hence the use of autotune and those background vocals you picked up on. The soundscape feeds into the lyrics. Thank you for explaining it so well for us. For BTS the lyrics are one of the most amazing things about their music and ARMY loves long reactions that delve into that artistry as well as the insane MVs we get that have so many layers as well. So we are happy to watch a reactor watch something more than once. For lyrics, Doolset Bangtan are one of the best sites for looking at the lyrics and the meanings with the social aspect of their Korean nationality. Others have mentioned a little, but Martha Graham is the 'mother/creator' of modern/contemporary dance. I am a former Rhythmic Gymnast and have danced as well and I knew that quote so well even before I found this song. 'A dancer dies twice, and the first time is the most painful', with the meaning being when we can no longer dance. The band took it from there to consider their own fears as a musician to no longer be able to hear the music. The album it is from considers Carl Jung's concept of the Ego, Persona and Shadow with the Map of the Soul and the songs from the two albums are under one of those three categories. Black Swan is one of the Shadow songs, hence the use of the shadow (Jimin and Hobi dancing off camera) to create the shadows. They are also dancing barefoot which is something that was pioneered in contemporary dance and is something unusual for all the members, except for Jimin who studied it at an Arts High School (he was the top student). Love that you did pick up a bit about the costuming with the white suits with the black parts, that is the reference to Swan Lake with the black swan taking over the white swan and vice versa. Hence there is a lot to do with when they are in their white outfits or the black ones. For their live concert performance from Permission to Dance tour, they were all in black and it was an insane art piece that would not look out of place in an arts festival. Lumpens is the company/director that does the majority of their MVs, even from the start and he is insanely brilliant. Blackpink and BTS can not really be compared as BP are very, very controlled and written by their own company with very little autonomy from the members. They are from a 'Big 3' company that is very controlling of their idols and are more about visuals than music. They are the pretty surface, but there is not a lot below the surface to discover at all. BTS write, and produce their own music, have a lot of say in their concepts, the MV themes and design, and have done so since their debut. You will not find many ARMY who like BP and there is a lot of bad blood between the fans of both groups.
They really enjoy playing around sonically! In so much of their music the layers and interaction between their vocals and instrumental creates such a wonderful soundscape! They’ve used chromaticism in really interesting ways
Between group tracks, unit tracks, solos, and special projects and collabs, they have over 300 songs in their discography. Welcome to the light my child. 😆 Just go ahead and dive in. It's kind of like a pool. You worry if the temperature and depth are right but once you are in, it's the best!
The song is related to the concept of a black swan which literally is a sudden unexpected event typically with severe consequences. Black Swan is part of BTS's Map of the Soul concept which has a number of tracks adapting the psychology of Karl Jung to the member's emotional state. The use of shadows refers to Jung's concept of the Shadow, a subconscious aspect of the Psyche which acts as a repository of repressed emotions and thoughts. Jung feels when a person's Persona (how the individual presents to the world in situations) becomes extremely successful (the Persona not being who the person is but a construction the person uses to make impressions) there will be elements of the Shadow which will leak into consciousness. This causes dissonance which is only resolved through a process Jung calls individuation, an integrating of Shadow elements into the process by which the conscious Psyche is managed. In this song BTS is undergoing a moment of Shadow element leakage which is making them wonder about whether making music is something they are committed to. They are experiencing a first death in that commitment to the artistry that defined them now is coming into doubt. So, this is no Swan Lake. It is a moment asking for individuation. And the lyrics, particularly Suga's solo, show they are coming to accept this. The receding shadow you see at the end represents individuation is occuring so Shadow elements no longer are causing as much inner havoc. The members can move forward, perhaps needing to figure out how to reconnect to the joy of artistry, but definitely understanding they will be formulating a next chapter different from how they were before.
... you've seen three flavors of BTS. There are several more 😂 The ballads are well worth checking out - particularly live (Truth Untold is a favorite of mine) - and so are the rap songs. You have a ton of choices there, but outro: tear isn't a bad starting point. Then there are all the songs dedicated to ARMY - they sing directly to us a lot. And Airplane pt 2, which is Latin pop.... The list goes on. Basically they're very very good at what they do, so it's just about finding what you like in what they do. I like that you called out the intense attention to detail in the music and video - it's key to who they are. I'll stick around :) I suspect you will at least drift gently down the rabbit hole, because there's a lot of different music, all very carefully crafted. I suspect that's basically catnip to you 😁
Don’t know if you’ve already been informed, but the sound you’re talking about at 10:50 is called gayageum, it’s a Korean traditional instrument that can be heard throughout the song
As rock guy I really recommend you “More” by j-hope of BTS if you want to dive more into their solos , I think it’s your cup of tea , I still can’t stop enjoying this song, support you from Saudi Arabia
I hadn't scheduled a BTS rabbit hole for 2022 and here I am now XD I feel you on that, it can be a bit time consuming, but it is so worth it in the end. I feel like I gained so much in my life by getting to know them, as musicians and as people. Lyrics are definitely an important part of BTS's music, but not at the detriment of visuals or performances. It can be tricky to balance everything, especially as a reactor because viewers have certain expectations, but don't worry too much about that. I learned the meaning of some songs months after hearing them for the first time. BTS' music is there to be enjoyed, there shouldn't be rules for how to listen to it. To get to know them individually, I suggest Taylor's guide, but don't rush into it. I do think it's important to get used to them beforehand, develop an appreciation for their music, their talent, watch some MVs, some performances... when you actually become curious about knowing their names and their story, watch the guide. Otherwise, you won't remember most of what you'll learn and, quite frankly, I don't know how other people feel about that, but I'm often disappointed when reactors watch a guide too early on. They can't make connexions to MVs, songs or other content yet and they don't have any attachment to the boys, so they learn the history of the groupe itself, but forget most of what is said about the members individually. But that's just my opinion, like I said, follow your gut and do whatever you wanna do:) Good luck in your journey!
I will be nice if you could watch the MV and the live performance at the same moment. The live performance of Black Swan is a piece of art. You would be able to understand a lot more. BTS as a group will comeback at 2025 so don't you worry, you have plenty of time to catch up 🙂
You could check the Art Film version for this song. It's a completely different arrangement and sadly it wasn't released on streaming platforms. When they released their album Map of The Soul: 7 they included quite a few art-related events and one of them was that film were a dance crew created a performance for a very special version of Black Swan
Welcome to BTS, enjoyed this reaction. As I'm sure others will say, you will miss a lot of the beauty of their music if you aren't able to focus on their lyrics. Maybe you can try watching a lyric video first and then either the MV or live performance - BTS are often best live! They also have dance practice videos. And for Army (fans)...we never mind watching long videos!!! 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
The video was filmed in L.A. at the Los Angeles Theater. A theater that has been there almost as long as Hollywood has been around. Jimin is a main dancer with a background in contemporary as well as hip hop dance. The dance leader, and other main dancer is one of the rappers by the name of J Hope. Even Jimin has said J Hope is better. But it's up to each individual fan to decide who they like as a dancer, but both along with Jungkook and V being part of the dance line. Now as for the song, you may want to watch the MV that they released prior to this one. Yes this is the official MV for the song, however prior to releasing this MV, they released a performance video of a dance company I believe from Ukraine. And the arrangement of the song is incredible. At the beginning of the video is a quote from a dancer/choreographer Martha Graham, "a dancer has two deaths. And the first death is the most painful." At the time that this song and the album it was on, the members said they had lost their love of the music. And technically this was supposed to be their last song, they were going to break up but right after they did this, we went into covid. And thing turned out a whole lot different. I know there's a lot more, but I'm sure other ARMY will fill u in.
BTS`is worthwhile rabbit hole. Jiimin was training in dance before becoming a trainee at Big Hit. Check it out live at one of the recent concerts in LA or Las Vegas, it is wonderful.
you should hear the live version of blue & grey that goes into black swan ... it sounds like it's played on a (spanish) guitar and it's just absolutely STUNNING, they performed it at their Permission To Dance concerts last year, the one they did in LA is actually fully on Disney Plus!
So the beautiful contempary dancer is Jimin he also has the highest voice as hes a countertenor. They are able to layer their vocals so well because all the rappers have a different flow and the in the vocalists we have a counter tenor, 2 tenors one of whom has proper perfect pitch (jungkook) and the other Jin learnt to both sing and dance after joining the group as he was actually studying acting and can sing both high and low, and V (TaeHyung) who has a soulful baritone but can also get up there in the high notes. They have a hand in producing and writting their own music and they are perfectionists always striving to make it as good as possible.
Your next BTS song recommendations: Fake Love (mv), House of Cards (live, vocal line), Outro Tear (live from the Wembley Stadium Concert, rap line) for you to taste how different each of their songs are.
Our main vocalist jungkook is named as one of the greatest singers of all time by rolling stones....n jungkook is the singer who sings the official sound track of FIFA world cup opening ceremony (song name . dreamers).....n also named as the best vocalist of south Korea in the history..... sooo proud of jungkook 💜
Nice reaction and input on the technical aspects of the song. The manipulated vocals reflects their inner voices which are an ongoing dialogue through their discography. Be well! 💜🇨🇦
I think the lyrics are about artists who always face fears like running out of passion or inspiration. It will be like death. And trying to get out of the black hole. Jimin had the opportunity to show his contemporary dancing skills. Yes they do everything with so much care to every detail.
BTS lyrics are important to them. And BTS has always said that. Of course then the music . To me the imagery is the last thing but it’s also important. Sincerely I have no issue watching and reading. Just watch multiple times. I believe the venue is in California
Hi there again, I have just commented on your channel regarding seeing Dimash live, and here I am, giving you full support and admiration for doing BTS, the best group in the world :) Needless to say anything any further, Army knows everthing and they have given you already all you need to know. I'd love to see BTS live, which might be difficult as it will be a while until they come back. But maybe, in 2025, Jungkook will notice me in the audience as being one of the oldest Army :) You never know! LOL Cheerio from Vienna!
With BTS their songs have deep messages. They don't sing about sex booze drugs etc like western artists do. They sing about depression discrimination and other topics that no other artists talked about. That's why the fandom called ARMY loves them and very protective of the group.
I always watch each MV multiple times. The first time is just to take the whole thing in. Then I will re-watch with lyrics because the lyrics are ABSOLUTELY important in all BTS songs! There are many videos breaking down the meaning behind the lyrics because even just reading them in English won't be enough to fully understand the meaning. BTS isn't for dummies! After watching a couple of times for visual effect and lyrics, I watch several times again because I need to see what they are all doing in the choreo. Then you have to follow up with the dance practice video because there's always more to see. They have performed so many versions of Black Swan at various live events and each one a little different. Truly a masterpiece! I hope you catch them all!! I really enjoy your reactions and appreciate you sharing your knowledge! 💜
Welcome! I really have been enjoying your reactions. If I could suggest reacting to The Guide to BTS Members by Taylor Mari. It will help to make it all make sense. Enjoy the rabbit hole. 💜💜💜
BTS songs are often very lyrically heavy as you put it. I often recommend that you watch once for the visuals and enjoying the composition of the song and then a second time to deep dive the lyrics. ARMY really loves to see people really enjoy all sides of the songs. Loved your reaction! 💜💜💜
You don't have to decide between the visuals and subtitles. It's okay to watch it twice in the same vid. Once with and once without subtitles. I highly suggest that going forward if you can't pay attention to both at the same time.💜💜 also I think army are used watching both at the same time because some of us watch subtitled anime.
Thank you for explaining it from your musical background. Please enjoy the fall down the rabbit hole. You won’t regret it. Go at any pace you’re comfortable with 💜
Great reaction! I recommend looking up the lyrics beforehand. The guy doing the contemporary dance, his name is Jimin and he does a lot of the high notes, he typically has high pitch singing voice versus the others and he is the main dancer That part you mentioned also is a harmony between two members, it's their real voice not a manipulation.
I am hoping you watch their dance practice for "Run BTS" (not to be confused with "Run" by BTS). And then watch the live performance (there are different videos out there, some with clearer audio than others).
The Map of the Soul album series encompasses the psychological concepts of Carl Jung. The persona, which is the part of ourselves that we present to the world. The shadow, which is our doubts and fears. The ego, our hopes and dreams. Black Swan falls in the shadow concept. BTS is afraid of losing their passion for music. Lyrics are important to BTS’ songs.
You should react to the rapline's (RM, JHope and Suga) live version of their rap song Ugh! from the BTS Busan concert in October 2022. Phenomenal performance
Thanks for your reaction, particularly about the music aspect. I am much more drawn to the visual so it's really good to have audio things pointed out. It is difficult to get to grips with it all at the same time. Personally, I like to watch it all first to form my own opinions then read the lyrics afterwards so that I can understand the deeper meaning that many of their songs have. I'll be keeping an eye out for more reactions. 👍
As someone who is a new fan, my recommendation is to watch a lyric video first, and then the music video. That way you get both lyrics, the actual song, and the music video, and perhaps also a live performance because BTS have really good live performances. 💜👏😄
As you say everything BTS and their team do is at an 'elite level'. They are also amazing performers live. You might like to react to the live performance of Black Swan at their Permission to Dance concert- beautifully choreographed and filmed- it is an incredible performance.
If you want to get to know them. " A guide to Bangtan 7 2021 " and " nobodies to legend " will help. They are super goofy and down to earth, humble and very funny guys. I sometimes think of them as comedian to the extent that I forget they are singers 😄 They have the biggest fandom (says by google) called Army (I am one of them too!) and ofc haters every where but they only spread positive energy
I have loved this song since it came out on MOTS7, but seeing it performed live at PTD LA was absolutely transformative! I'm 49 years old and have attended countless concerts. Absolutely NONE compare to seeing BTS perform live. These 7 are lightening in a bottle 💜
I hope you move quickly into checking out live footage and some of the semi candid stuff that they have as well, on their BangtanTV channel. Because that will let the air out of your expectations of super-perfection from them. You will begin to understand that they bring us honesty and realness and joy and a true love and understanding of music. And fellowship. They are about us. About people. All the glitzy glossy high performing music videos are only the very polished edges of the beautiful stone or gem that they actually represent. I really love your vocabulary, understanding of music, and ability to hit what you're experiencing on so many levels and share it with us. Thanks a lot.
Since you mentioned reading lyrics like poetry, that's actually one of my favorite things with BTS, Namjoon wanted to be a poet when he was younger and it's very obvious in the music he writes, Black Swan is actually a very good example of that. You can refer to Doolset Bangtan for BTS lyrics, they're a great translator and give a lot of background and cultural context as well..
Their music is indeed very complex if you peel back the layers. The times we've seen them working on their songs it's been layer upon layer upon layer on the screen. But I would advise you to maybe look up the lyrics on Doolset before watching the video because they're absolute kings of lyricism; it's a huge part of their succes. 💜
For BTS, I'd recommend simply watching the music video twice. Once to watch it and enjoy the initial vibe from the music and again to try to catch some of the lyrics because they're important.
The Producer of the video is Choi Yong Seok , he is incredibly talented! He is the director of Lumpens. One of the best music video production companies in the world right now, I think !
Most professionals thart we have reactiin to BTS do listen (sometimes without lyrics on or sometimes as just music, wihtout MV) then depending how they personally work they either go watch my possible still withut lyrics on the screen Or go through lyrics - either read through or analysis.. and then third time do what is left ofthe three depending.. some mix it with or addingthe live performance when it is awailable.. Some do two of those some do 4 four. Some weigh in on more depending if are they videographers, lyricicst, producers, singers or dancers more.. You always could try if some of that would work for you. BTS themselves say they are not just the lyrics, just the singing (or just the producing) or just the visuals : their art is combination of it all. Black Swan has the other-side-of-the-coin -song, where Black Swan is fear of loosing your art/passion for your art (forever) - Dionysus is the joy of creating the art when it feels as an absolute celebration of your talent.
I just want to say that BTS stands on their lyrics. You can go back or play it twice but i recommend you to pay attention to them. But othewise great reaction. 🙂💜
I watch twice. Once without the lyrics then once with. Perhaps a run through without the lyrics then a 2nd run discussing it more. It's how I manage it until I learn more Korean. I love your technical perspective. I highly suggest On Kinetic Manifesto. For Black Swan, a dance company art film to this song begins with a quote by Martha Graham. “A dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the more painful.”
Black Swan is what dragged me into the Rabbit hole of BTS. I'm a hard rock, blues, soul gal. And they got me by the throat after I heard Lie and Louder than Bombs. I would love to see your take on those two songs. Another 2 got me was House of Cards and Stigma. Then I found Tear and Ugh....let me tell you, you won't regret finding these men. There are songs that will permanently go on your playlists for life.
It's nice watching another Aussie reactor appreciating BTS. Many reactors that I follow watch the MV fully first and then replay and go through the lyrics. I don't understand a word they say, including their rap, BUT, I like what I am hearing. They BTS work outside the box which seems to piss everyone else off, but they are at the top. They use cultural instruments and also wear the Hanbock on many occasions.
MV was film in LA (US) old famous theater. If you react next "ON Kinetic manifesto come prima" it was filmed in LA too. And as a produser you have maybe intrest to watch "BTS ON commentary film dialogue" (BANGTANTV), docu of americans side of making music with BTS. Sorry my english and greetings from the edge of Europe
Well said also the most beautiful man I have ever seen😍💜
He's the one going miaow miaow in the background vocals by the way lol. His range is stratospheric 💜
Wow a kpop stan not being able to recist throwing shade at another group. Basic Toxic army
Their lyrics don’t have substance tho, that’s not a lie…
@@NickG409 they didnt lie though. Is it their fault that these girls' producers dgaf about meaningful deep lyrics?
@@NickG409 so u think ratata and dududu have substance?
I so love Army. You really captured everything. Thank you 💜💜💜💜💜
In regards to your difficulty focusing overall, unless it's a lyric video, you can watch twice.
It looks like heaps of people are suggesting that. It never would have occurred to me to watch it twice! 😀
💜🙌🏻yesssss This! 👆🏼
He doesn't yet know but he experienced the Jimin Effect, he isn't going back now 😂
😁
Once you jimin in you can't Jimin out😎
the Jimin effect! can't wait. Filter and set me free.
Yes, one of the members Jimin has a background in contemporary dance his also the lead vocalist and one of the main dancers in the group
Small correction - Jimin does have the background in contemporary dance but he is not the lead vocalist, though he is an amazing vocalist with a unique voice.
@@Bolachas25 YES he is the lead vocalist since debut
JK : main vocalist
JIMIN : lead vocalist
JIN AND TAE : vocalist

@@Bolachas25 new army?
Excellent suggestion. Thank you.
@@PrymalChaos I have to so agree with this comment-their LIVE performances are incredible, but regardless, you can not go wrong just continuing to fall down the BTS rabbit hole-you will NEVER regret it!
YES! The dance is part of the music! I remember somewhere the guys said they are a band and their bodies, the dances, are their instruments.
“I’m a little bit wary of that but I think rather than approach Kpop as a genre, a better approach would be ‘integrated content.' K-pop includes not just the music, but the clothes, the makeup, the choreography…all these elements I think sort of amalgamate together in a visual and auditory content package, that I think sets it apart from other music or maybe other genres so again, as I said, rather than approach K-pop as it’s own genre I think approaching it as this integration of different content would be better.”-Suga of BTS
Their is an amazing interview that this came from and if you are interested I will put the link under this comments.
They (BTS) are involved with the creative process, because it is their art and MV/dance is another way to showcase and present and add to their art
ua-cam.com/video/pLxoq7mcsg0/v-deo.html
See all with subtitles, it is very important that you know that they are
saying in every song.
Small correction Jungkook became a trainee at 13.
BTS mentions 'my first death' when talking about losing passion, that is a reference to a quote by a famous dancer Martha Graham: "A dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the more painful."
If you pay attention to the lyrics the song sort of has two parts.
To be fair my knowledge of ballet doesn’t extend far beyond Swan Lake and The Nutcracker. Although my admiration for their artistry knows no bounds.
And Lyrics of BTS songs might not be full poetry like Songs of Leonard Cohen, but most of the lyrics of BTS songs has very deep meaning, philosophical & inspiring messages & some of them are beautifully written with many beautiful poetry phrases.(thanks to RM, the BTS’s leader, who we named as ‘the philosophical poet of BTS’.)
This is one of the important reason why BTS fans & Army loves BTS music so much.
There are plenty of other talented, hard-working performers out there who deserve a chance to shine.
there really are no roles besides leader, rapper, singer (and even the last two are not set in stone), they all can do everything
It is the year of the rabbit, so welcome 💜💛
Take your own time and do your thing. There's so many ways to approach the mountain of work the boys have done.
lyrics are overall very important for bts, just so you know
I am learning this. This is why I love hearing from fans of the artists in the comments! You guys really bring me up to speed!
I agree, BTS as A Group in The Black Swan Situation now (from what Suga & RM said on Festa Dinner 2022)
The member at 6:01 is one of the two main dancers in BTS and in this song they display his solo contemporary dancing which he specializes in. Jimin is also really
good at pop/lock and hip-hop styles as well 😊
A lot of reactors, watch the video first to get the vibe, then watch it again with subtitles.
Thanks for this reaction.:)
I recommend ON kinetic manifesto film after Black Swan.
Black Swan is a song that expresses their fear of losing their passion for music.
And ON is their determination to overcome that fear and move on to the future. :)
BTS member Jin said in his acceptance speech at the 2018 MAMA that BTS suddenly became famous worldwide and had a hard time for a year due to great pressure and fear.
And at the last October's concert in Busan, SUGA told ARMY to grow old together because they will make music for another 20 or 30 years.😭
The lyrics of BTS' songs are based on their own experiences, and their albums are organic because they contain their growth narrative.
It will also be fun to listen to their albums in order and analyze them. :)
Oh, there're many good Black Swan live performances. These two are my favorite lives. :)

Suga couldn't participate in the performance due to rehabilitation after his shoulder surgery, but this is one of the masterpieces.
On as the answer to Black Swan heals my heart every time. And it's JK's ferocity following Jimin's grace, which is also delightful. 💜
Wanna go simple one-shot mv next? I'd recommend Save Me, which is also loved by many!
This one is definitely lyric heavy! Don't be afraid to watch it twice, once for the visuals and sound and once for the lyrics... ARMY will watch.
Hello!! Thank you so much for reacting!! Enjoyed your thoughts!!
I see everyone has talked about the meaning behind the song and the inspiration behind it.
Where was this filmed? In Los Angeles Theatre in the Broadway Theater District of Los Angeles
Also just so you know their is a reason behind everything in BTS music videos. That the shadows are starting to creep and and make him “fly” or in other words show themselves…their are other interpretations but these are mine…their are many many more
10:48 I always thought it was this or it was a synthesized version of this instrument: The track starts with a guitar sound which sounds quite similar to the Korean traditional instrument called the gayageum, giving the song Korean cultural vibes right from the beginning.
Other song recommendations:
-Fake Love
-Fake Love extended version (which is suppose to be more on the rock side)
-Blue and Grey (live performance on TvUnplugged but I know they block but seen people just pause a lot and/or puts words over screen which is fine by us)(turn on cc)
-Stay Alive by Jungkook (produced by Suga of BTS)
-My Universe by Coldplay and BTS
-My Universe remix by Suga (would love to hear your thoughts on the differences between the two and maybe which one you personally like better)
-More by Jhope
-On kinetic Manifesto Film
-Wildflower by RM
P.S. I have seen many reactors who will watch it twice 1. For the MV/sound of the music 2. To read the lyrics.
Best to watch first then watch again again lyrics are very important
😅None of us scheduled a BTS rabbit hole but life happens 🤣
The one thing I will say is that for the vast majority of ARMY lyrics are very important and a large part of the reason we keep coming back.
I would be Interested in your option on " louder then bombs" or Jimins "lie"
Maybe next On kinetic manifesto film 🥰🙏 or to get even more contrast, one of the members solosong Agusd D's Daechwita or Rm song Wildflower?
ua-cam.com/video/qGjAWJ2zWWI/v-deo.html
ua-cam.com/video/u18be_kRmC0/v-deo.html
ua-cam.com/video/gwMa6gpoE9I/v-deo.html
Great suggestions I second them all
Absolutely, very good suggestions! Daechwita and Wildflower are both seriously amazing works of art
Army here 💜 💜💜💜💜 thank you well put. 💜
... you've seen three flavors of BTS. There are several more 😂
The ballads are well worth checking out - particularly live (Truth Untold is a favorite of mine) - and so are the rap songs.
But that's just my opinion, like I said, follow your gut and do whatever you wanna do:)
Good luck in your journey!
I will be nice if you could watch the MV and the live performance at the same moment. The live performance of Black Swan is a piece of art. You would be able to understand a lot more. BTS as a group will comeback at 2025 so don't you worry, you have plenty of time to catch up 🙂
Aussie here! Loved your BTS reactions! Would definitely love to see more! Subscribed for sure! 💜
'Fake Love' and 'Blood Sweat & Tears' are highly recommended as well. Thank you for your reaction.
you should hear the live version of blue & grey that goes into black swan ... it sounds like it's played on a (spanish) guitar and it's just absolutely STUNNING, they performed it at their Permission To Dance concerts last year, the one they did in LA is actually fully on Disney Plus!
Bts is perfect unique nothing in the world like them!
Jimin jimin 👍🔥
It's a Landmark Theatre in L.A. I believe it's named "The Palace"
I love the meowing you're doing to illustrate your point 🤣
BTS lyrics are important to them. And BTS has always said that. Of course then the music . To me the imagery is the last thing but it’s also important. Sincerely I have no issue watching and reading. Just watch multiple times. I believe the venue is in California
Hi welcome down the BTS rabbit hole. I enjoyed watching this. 💜💜💜💜💜💜
Yes!!! This one was a a good one bro. I really look forward to the BTS rabbit hole journey. Fake Love should be next!
Love ...this MV ..so Iconic
With BTS their songs have deep messages. They don't sing about sex booze drugs etc like western artists do. They sing about depression discrimination and other topics that no other artists talked about. That's why the fandom called ARMY loves them and very protective of the group.
Bts 💪👑😍💘💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
You could always watch the lyric videos first and then watch the MV if that's easier than trying to read the subtitles while watching the MV!
Go at any pace you’re comfortable with 💜
My suggestion for next BTS video: Blood, sweat and Tears MV. The production is amazing!
LA theatre there is always a behind the scenes for all their videos
Thank youu for reaction
Run bts next!
💜
To be honest, I don't really like the vocal layer, because it covers the uniqueness of the members' voices, but I'm still happy with the current one
For BTS, I'd recommend simply watching the music video twice. Once to watch it and enjoy the initial vibe from the music and again to try to catch some of the lyrics because they're important.
looking forward to your next BTS reaction!
Seconding "On Kinetic Manifesto".
IF YOU WANT TO SEE MORE ABOUT THEIR VOCALS, YOU MUST CHECK OUT 'FILM OUT'. borahae 💜
