  • In this lesson, we learn a blues shuffle bass line in the key of E. While there are many different types of blues patterns for bass, this is similar to the Albert Collins version of the T Bone Shuffle. It can be applied to a variety of blues songs, especially other "Texas Shuffles." It moves through the standard 12 bar blues form and adapts the bass pattern to each chord in the progression.

Aside from learning scales and learning songs by ear, THIS is THE most important lesson a person can learn on the bass. My first lesson ever 20 years ago was learning the blues in G and I still practice it to this day. I would recommend to anyone watching this vid to try and play this E shuffle for 10 minutes straight. Excellent lesson here.

Very cool lesson! Someone had told me recently that Bass Players generally know more than they think they know!! 😄That is so true!! When I heard you play this, I was like, OMG how come I never tried playing that, it's so doable!! It's such fun learning your simple grooves. Thanks so much Ryan!!

Hi Ryan, thanks so much for this T Bone Shuffle lesson. I'm playing bass in a newly formed band. I have renewed interest in bass partly because all the guitar places were taken haha. We get handed guitar chords and lyrics which is a starter but not always suitable for bass as you know yourself, playing a shuffle instead of roote notes is worlds apart. For me this was a great refresher, I will view your other lessons soon, I love your presentation. Cheers from Oz.

Yes, you should practice it in multiple keys after you get comfortable with the first key.

Absolutely. Tunes can get called in any key, which is why I teach in intervals/scale degrees so that you can transpose. Cheers!
