On November 7, Honda unveiled a prototype walking assist device that helps support the bodyweight of the user.
The new walking assist device reduces the load on leg muscles and joints in the hip, knees, and ankles by supporting a portion of the person's bodyweight.
The device has a simple structure consisting of a seat, frame, and shoes, and weighs 6.5kg, including the shoes and the battery.
The device is operated on a lithium ion battery and can remain operational for about two hours on a single charge.
Natural walking is achieved by changing the amount of assisting force applied to the right and left legs through the control of two motors, based on the information obtained though sensors imbedded in the shoes of the device.
Based on the know-how acquired through its study of human walking represented by its advanced humanoid robot ASIMO, Honda has carried out research on walking assist devices, and plans to evaluate the effectiveness of the experimental model in actual environments such as at a factory.

this is great! I have Muscular Dystrophy and I have to use a power wheelchair all the time. It looks like this could help me walk again. Please let me know when you come out with these I am very interested. I think it is great you are developing something for the disabled like me. Some healthy people never consider the needs of the less fortunate because they are so self absorbed and make such inconsiderate remarks as some have done here. Thank you Honda for the innovative technology!!!

this is great. I know lots of people with poor knees and they have difficulty walking. and for all of you who say it'll hurt you balls, it's got a comfy looking seat thats built like a bicycle. so as long as you don't sit on anything important your good to go. I'd like to see someone who has difficulty walking use this though

Sad to see such asinine comments. It's amazing that this tech is being developed. It will be able to help elderly, people with spina bifida, car accident victims, etc. I'm confident that people who cannot walk would be fine with the design if gave them mobility. And I'm sure the design will continue to modify and become less conspicuous. Way to go Honda! Keep up the great work.

It may be a pain for some, but for those who have limited coordination of their legs, it may turn out to be the perfect safety device so we can resume walking.
The support should keep us from falling and breaking bones if our leg suddenly doesn't respond correctly when we try to make it move.
For those with permanent nerve damage, that for safety sake, has forced us into a wheelchair, this could be a real blessing.

@imreallyjin the point is that it distributes the force... its much more comfortable to sit than to stand, and to lie than to sit, because the weight of your body is distributed accross a larger plane; from the bottom of your feet, to your whole thighs and butt, and from that to the entire back surface area of your body.

It could definitely be usefull for factory workers and soldiers, anyone of the sort that would need to stand, walk, or run for long distances or time periods. Mainly though, this would be invaluable to the elderly and physically impaired. If you have ever known someone in this situation, you would know they would give almost anything to regain some independence and mobility. It would be a dream come true for that segment of society.

@Tropetre I am only 34 with sever arthritis and foot problems I can see this being a miracle device for me when I get older. I have a feeling I'll probably need it by age 50. My father uses a scooter but this is so much better because you get range of motion and do not stay sedentary. It looks like they still need to do quite a bit as far as looks and comfort though. I think 10 years in the future is more realistic expectation for something that is more user friendly as well as cost effective.

Patients with spinal cord injury and other neuromuscular disorders will benefit in the future. Perhaps a rehab device too to stimulate walking. The financial cost of falls and deep vein thrombosis may be decreased with a device like this. In surgery all patients have a device that sqeezes the legs intermittently to promote blood flow, this device is not so far fetched.

But this could easily help to extend the life of those muscles, assuming you don't go all out and use it as 'regular daily use' thereby deteriorating your muscles. This would reduce lifelong strain on the muscles and could assist in the reduction of serious chronic back problems. Though I agree, not a necessity.

hmm sounds like 1/2 of a robot suit (a suit that basically suports your, and its own weight and allows for movement while you are in it, used to improve your carying and lifting capacity.)
also would allow you to move faster and longer increasing performance efficiency. at some point i expect a total suit to replace bulkier fork lifts for many jobs (though not all)

Hi, I was affected by Polio when I was nearly 5-6 years old. About three years ago I've had surgery on my legs to make them strengthen. Though Doctors had told me that strengthening my legs will not make me walk as they'll be too weak. Now my legs are weak. However, I can stand holding on to something stabled and having part of my weight on it. I can take two to three steps before I start running out of breath. My question is, is there something know of to help me walk and stay stabled/not fall?

how sir? It helps those who cant walk due to knee injuries and bad legs go outside and live rather then stay inside all day and rot their life away doing so. Yes it looks weird, but you gotta start somewhere. Turning us into robots would be to reject our natural legs and replace them entirely, this only helps the legs, it gives you no other advantage except to walk better

  • @flitsies
    @flitsies 11 років тому

It sticks out too far the legs need to be more uniform with the human body, the seat needs to go up to the waste line and a belt attached to stop it moving around to prevent crotch pain, it also needs to support the whole of the hip section.
One other thing what would happen if one of the legs near the top snapped, where would the leg end up, directly into the groin of the person wearing it, so some kind of protection is needed for potential structural failure.
