was blown away by this game. I remember when everyone was disappointed with D3 and said GD should of been D3. The fact they still are coming out with updates/patches years later after their last expansion. They truly care about this game.
@@streleoksynths3032 I think Expansion is more accurate. At least that's what we used to call it back in the day. Big update (v1.2) before that too BTW!
one of the build content guys told me this much Shukea, Crate is working on GD2/Grim Dawn 2 w a new engine so it'll work on next gen consoles, once when that happens you Xbox one and previous PS 3/4 players, will be shit up a river without a paddle ✌️.
I'm so happy that Grim Dawn finally getting the attention that it deserves now that D4 had made arpg popular again. Everyone talking about awesome BG3 is that it doesn't have any BS business practice but no one talks about Grim Dawn, a game that just want to be a game
Funnily enough, as the time of posting this video, Crate announced even ANOTHER BIG PATCH for the game. Simply unreal the love they've put in this game. Very good review! Keep up the great work!
I am glad they're still at this. I'm barely around 30 hours into the game, and I wound up buying every expansion pack. After D2, this is my favorite ARPG
There will be Patch 1.2 for the old game + DLCs. And in 2024 they want to add another DLC - which shall be a lore link to their new game. At least that is what I got from their 2 hour presentation recently.
@mflax4331 I have alot of ground to cover. I bought this game on sale to what feels like 2 years ago and just started playing last night. Needless to say I stayed up way past my bedtime. Diablo 4 brought us all together and brought more attention to other games. 😂
I have over 3000 hours on this game logged on Steam (probably 2000 effective, I did forget to turn the game off for more than a few nights), started with the open beta. I have been telling everyone for years that cares to hear it that GD is the real successor to D2. I must have over 50 chars started, real game and mods included, and each replay focuses on the new combo abilities, not so much on the story anymore. I loved the Titan quest serie too, played the heck out of that one, but GD is still my favorite ARPG.
With a few thousand hours in this game, it's an absolute blast. The season leagues have been really great, adding in more super bosses (check out Ascended Spellbreaker Moria fight), SR-scaling to dungeons, compressed SR (15 is what 75 was), more items to make more builds possible and an whole new act, with 2 new dungeons as a part of it. Season was an absolute blast.
I'm doing absolutely the same. D4 was boring for me, played it 5 days and that's it. Now I'm having a blast with grim dawn, the true diablo experience!
Grim Dawn is the best ARPG ever made. It's traditional, single-player approach, satisfying gameplay that respects your time, and solid loot economy is indeed part of a 'dying breed.' It's how it should be done. No thoughts toward 'increasing engagement' artificially, no bullshit with secondary currencies or in-game purchases (which is a huge detriment to the design philosophy of PoE, whether people realize it or not), it just doesn't get better with modern ARGPs, a subgenre Blizzard has now done everything it can to destroy.
I feel It's a bit weak in the combat feel to take the crown as it's best. This is a very important facet of games like this. 9 out of ten is too high for the graphics.
It also seems to be generally liked by both gamers and critics. I don't remember seeing any bad reviews of GD in UA-cam and in Metacritic it is rated "generally favorable" by both critics and users. Also, apparently it has also sold something like 7 million copies (counting all expansions) so it is also a fiscal success story.
Yes to much of the good aspects but wrong about others. Original Diablo is a dark fantasy before anything else. Grim Dawn very much suggests the same in regards to story.. Yet graphics fall way short. And terrible loot economy just means it should change the name to Santa Clause Dawn. Cut the loot drops to 10% of what we're getting and you have a valid dark fantasy loot economy. Combat also falls short, but at least it's better than most current arpgs. Considering power fantasy is the direct opposite of dark fantasy where you are up against unfavorable odds.
I've got 6000+h on this game and there is a reason for that. It is just THAT good. The infinite posibilities with the great balance is just amazing. You can do whatever you want and make it work, if you know what yr doing. And yes patches keep coming. You would think they woud stop that and work on GD2, but no the patches still come. However GD2 seems like a pipedream and that is very sad. But it is their prerogative.
Strongly agree with most of the commentary. I have over 7000 hours since 1-1-18. Play mostly hardcore for quite some time now. Usually only use veteran for restoring shrines while developing the character on elite then ultimate. Best replay value of any game. Endless builds.
Watching your play through was pretty epic and made me return to my most played game ever. It truly is limitless in content and though i have not tried any mods, i was shocked at how many conversions, item additions, etc are available. It truly is a masterpiece.
Thank you for the fantastic in depth review of Grim Dawn! Your game reviews are always the best because you actually review the game after actually playing them until completion and beyond!! I appreciate all of the work that you put into your game reviews! Keep up the great work!
I'd just echo your other video; that the best way to play GD is to NOT follow a build. Pick two classes and just play and figure it out yourself. The game is balanced and this was the only way I could finally get into the game; not following a build made it feel less like a chore and more like an adventure.
I checked my total hours recently on Grim Dawn, after coming back to it a few times over the span of several years for various reasons: 4300 hours. Not much more to say than that.
Great video! I still play TF out of Titan Quest and have only scratched the surface of this game. I’m really looking forward to playing this one now. Thanks
Grim Dawn is easily my favorite ARPG and one of my favorite games of all times. I'm super excited for the 1.2 update and the new expansion! One of the best games I've played is only getting better now!
Been playing this game since 2015. The variety of gameplay is just insane. For instance, did a playthrough as a spell heavy druid (Shaman/Arcanist) then did another playthrough as a 2H wielding Druid...Same class, very different experiences. Keep in mind there are 9 masteries (10 with the new upcoming DLC) so do the math...You'll never run out of new playing styles.
When this game came out I invested over 1200 hours in it. Loved every min of it. Pick.Ed up Diablo 4 and played about 2 weeks. Now that Grim Dawn is out on Xbox I’m going back to it after about 3 or 4 years. Going to be a blast. I’d say the only thing that compares to GD is tourchlight 2. Another awesome game.
I tend to agree about Diablo 1 and PoE. Diablo 2, 3, and Grim Dawn are also good in different ways. Most everything said in this video is valid. Except for itemization. It's not a problem just in this game. It's was also a problem in original Diablo games that doesn't exist in Path of Exile. From the start of Grim Dawn there is a lack of relevance to gear types. It does not matter what my playstyle is. Except for spellcaster, I wear any armor. It just doesn't matter. But a good itemization system gives gear types with bonuses and penalties. So the bonuses are benifitting your class, But are bad for other classes. Grim Dawn also falls short at scarcity.. It's called Grim. But it's actually Santa Clause Dawn because of how much loot is raining on you from the sky. If the loot drops are 10% of the current ridiculous amount, then you actually have to manage your resources. Sell what you cannot use in order to buy what you can.
Great review! This is easily my favorite ARPG and I go back to it often. Believe it or not, they just announced a third full DLC for the game. The developers truly love this game and the community.
I just started this game, so far its cool! not sure how some of the things are socketed to items/armor. But im trying to understand it. Started with Necro.
I totally agree. This game is so freaking great. The only thing you didn't mention was the great moddablity and the active modding community, that actually made it possible for you to play D2 (and D1) in GD with all the classes.
POE is so komplex for new players its years to learn everything in there. Other hand Grim Dawn is easy to learn and progress of character is faster. great game i can recommend. You can play it even on dual core PC with 4gb ram and random GPU its just runs on everyting.
I started playing this again before D4 came out to keep my impulse buying urges at bay. Actually got so addicted to it I had to stop playing it because it eating up all my free time :D And thankfully thanks to it I resisted buying Diablo 4
I played it through once on normal and it was great. Altough ARPG is not my favourite genre, this game is very good and fun. The story was better in Grim Dawn than PoE for me.
i like how your 'intro' is called 'thank you diablo 4' 🤣i agree with everything you sayd. also, Grim Dawn is insanely good balanced. i still never played a ARPG blanced as good as Grim Dawn. Edit: Fangs of Asterkarn!!
Yea pretty much poe and gd are two best arpgs. Only thing i wish gd had some unique items with unusual stats, because 99% of items are like this + 110% x type of damage + 104% x type of ailment dps + 5% hp or phys res + 30% x elemental resistance + 14% other resistance +2 levels to a skill I wish there were items that gave + 6 levels to a skill and barely anything else. Or perhaps items that have ridiculous increase in offensive ability or something, and no other stats. This would make itemisation more fun, because for now all gear pieces except the weapon are pretty much the same +
i literally ditched it after doing normal and taking 50hours to do so ( all quests and dlcs ). I thought it was ridiculously long and lost interest to do ultimate or start new toons. But maybe I should pick it up again thanks to you haha
I didnt play it for like 5-6 years but still.. have 4675.3 hours in it :) Love this game, got around 40 characters to lvl100 with max builds. Dont know what it was but had so much blast even playing campaign for the 100 times.
I used to say it will be hard to find D2 equals but when I played Grim Dawn few years back, I am now saying it's hard to find GD equals. The lore and character building is almost perfect. As well as the factions. Sometimes you see 3 factions are fighting each other on open fields like proper war and you came to finish them all off. It just beautifully well made.
A great game. I’ve only just started playing and at first I struggled especially with the lack of quest markers but now I get it. It makes the game one above the rest
0:03:00 Your story rating is understandable from a standard consumer point of view. I just would like to add how special the story not only is in it's complex details, but also how it is told over tiny bits you can find. Fine if you don't care (like really - I'm not attacking you or anyone else here! =) ) but there is much to discover there. PLUS it dares to be dark and sad and hopeless. I like to think that's not just rare but takes real confidence in your product (and background). Enough - I like your review!
Werglia wait til 1.2 patch Crate will be overhauling a lot of sh*t in the initial GD/Grim Dawn among other quality of life improvements to the game, Crate will be releasing a new expansion pack in 2024, not just that they're working GD2/Grim Dawn 2 nothing concrete yet all I know for certain its in development for next gen consoles.
unfortunately this game just looks too dated for me. depth and everything is great, mandatory, obviously, but I just cant see myself playing a game with an engine that looks 20 years old.
I really found a home in Grim Dawn. Played D1 and D2 and their mods a lot. D3 was just okay. Still haven't touched D4. Crate would be foolish not to be developing Grim Dawn 2 by now. With so many refugees coming from a disillusioning D4 experience and people are REALLY hyped for PoE 2.
I just started playing this game. I like the skill system so far, but what is it with the story? A lot of characters to talk to, but many of them are voiceless. A lot of kind of useless text and no clear objects. I got some quests, but they seem random and I have no big objective. Kill these three guys. I just found one of them. It just came out of the building and had a ton of HP, but was super easy to kill. It just took a long time. This game is missing a clear big objective. I feel that they should have done it like Diablo 2, put big objectives clearly visible and then you can just add small quests on top of those. Without the main goal, my motivation runs low quickly.
dungeon siege (best party game ever) diablo II( diablo 2 (party, appearances of random champion every where, killing of bosses for the loot with different skill was fun) dragonage origin series blade and sword (best feature is combos which i miss) Warlords Battle Cry (best hero system ever) SANDS OF SALZAAR Sword Coast Legends SANDS OF SALZAAR Fable The Lost Chapters Eternium dragonage origin series Spellforce(1&2 only) Final fantasy VII remake Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem Divine Divinity torchlight II Titan Quest Anniversary Shadows Heretic Kingdoms Victor Vran - Overkill Edition Van Helsing silver gog game darkstone Heores of Annhiliated Empires i have played many but like these most if you know anything near to it let me know
The video makes it sound like complexity is a good thing. I don’t like having too many choices. I want to pick from 3 or 4 choices and play the game! I don’t want subclassed . I want to pick 1 of 4 classes to play and enjoy the game!
On a more serious note, I keep hearing that Grim Dawn is a must play arpg , so it caught my interest. It seems to complicated for my tastes since my gaming sessions are about an hour long and I’d rather not spend that hour making a character. If it has pre-rolled characters for a quicker start, I might still try the game out .
> I don’t like having too many choices. You can play that way. I find it easier to understand a single class, than trying to juggle 2 classes. On my Soldier, I use left-click, right-click, Q, A, W. 3 keys, 2 mouse buttons. Easy.
Good video, liked and subscribed, though the only complain i have is the devotion cap of 60 points, yeah I see this is a balance thing but why give us over 100 shrines if you cant use them
By the way the game is getting a new DLC in 2024. This game is amazing! If you love ARPGs like Diablo or PoE try out this game its great! The rotating the camera has pretty much destroyed my view on other ARPG games because most of them limit your camera position where Grim Dawn doesnt. Its amazing!
a big pushback for me is to repeat the whole thing to play the higher difficulties Elite or Ultimate. Is this still a thing or can i switch to Ultimate immediately??
You can purchase "merit stone" with a character that has reached ultimate, then transfer said stone to a new char using shared stash. It unlocks ultimate on that character and gives you all skill/stat points from quests on previous difficulty. You can still go back to normal and elite to grab devotion shrines, or try to go all in on ultimate. Shrines have been added so you don't have to go back to normal if you don't want to.
Game is amazing, and they announced new expansion ! I'v seen a grimdawn review yesteday played by PoE / D4 fanboy, it gave it a 4/10 xD That dude cant see good ARPG if it hit him in the head
New Version v1.2.0 ist comming this year plus potentiel new content (Quote form crate-forum: "As for what is beyond v1.2.0…now I am not saying there might be something more in the future…but maybe I am saying there is something more in the future…")
Any suggestions for lightning dual wield? I see a 1hander and want 2 of them, but lightning is 2hander, caster and ranged. Do I just need to get legendaries to make it work?
Crystallum on one hand, other is what suits you best. Dual wield lightning is usually trickster AFAIK. Sets is a bit difficult because dual wield lightning is not the best supported variant. Stormserpent & bloodrager are good, when you are using savagery

Dude gets Chausses of Barbaros casually whilst I farmed 300 hours and I still don't have them :P
Only class missing is a shape-shifting one, but is coming...
Were mods mentioned? That is a big part of GD for me.
No, i'm rating Developers game only here. I'll release another video for Grim Dawn Mods.
imho the best arpg of all time. bought d4 and was unbelivable disappointed, so deinstalled it.
Without the main goal, my motivation runs low quickly.
dungeon siege (best party game ever)
diablo II( diablo 2 (party, appearances of random champion every where, killing of bosses for the loot with different skill was fun)
dragonage origin series
blade and sword (best feature is combos which i miss)
Warlords Battle Cry (best hero system ever)
SANDS OF SALZAAR
Sword Coast Legends
SANDS OF SALZAAR
Fable The Lost Chapters
Eternium
dragonage origin series
Spellforce(1&2 only)
Final fantasy VII remake
Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem
Divine Divinity
torchlight II Titan Quest Anniversary
Shadows Heretic Kingdoms
Victor Vran - Overkill Edition
Van Helsing
silver gog game
darkstone
Heores of Annhiliated Empires
i have played many but like these most if you know anything near to it let me know
The video makes it sound like complexity is a good thing. I don’t like having too many choices.
I want to pick from 3 or 4 choices and play the game! I don’t want subclassed . I want to pick 1 of 4 classes to play and enjoy the game!
Play Diablo 4 or Immortal then, what are you doing on grim dawn?
@@Werglia I need something to play when my phone battery is too low to play Immortal.
@@majorgear1021 Trust me, skip Grim Dawn in your case.
> I don’t like having too many choices.
You can play that way. I find it easier to understand a single class, than trying to juggle 2 classes. On my Soldier, I use left-click, right-click, Q, A, W. 3 keys, 2 mouse buttons. Easy.
The GOAT (Grim Dawn) is always worth playing. This game's timeless.
Played this few years ago I just reinstalled it it tonight 😅
Good video, liked and subscribed, though the only complain i have is the devotion cap of 60 points, yeah I see this is a balance thing but why give us over 100 shrines if you cant use them
Thanks! Extra shrines are there when you rush your 2-3rd run and you want to skip hard ones and collect them fast.
Really enjoy your channel, you talk about the games I care the most about and have a no bs style..Subscribed!
Welcome aboard!
best in class game. 1000+ house in game, still not bored
Been looking for some arpg’s lately, might definitely get into this
By the way the game is getting a new DLC in 2024. This game is amazing! If you love ARPGs like Diablo or PoE try out this game its great! The rotating the camera has pretty much destroyed my view on other ARPG games because most of them limit your camera position where Grim Dawn doesnt. Its amazing!
Solid review my friend!
New DLC coming up in 2024! So hyped for my all-time favourite ARPG
I played a demo, it was mundane. I like ARPGs but I don't get the hype for this game.
Warhammer inquisitor is also a great one!
It's aight. Wouldn't call it great but I had some fun.
a big pushback for me is to repeat the whole thing to play the higher difficulties Elite or Ultimate.
What's your character class/setup?
You know that a review of this game is accurate when you want to play the game after view it
Game is amazing, and they announced new expansion !
I'v seen a grimdawn review yesteday played by PoE / D4 fanboy, it gave it a 4/10 xD
That dude cant see good ARPG if it hit him in the head
Wait wait, atherial power at devil crossing? OMg😂😂 I'm still at level 42
New Version v1.2.0 ist comming this year plus potentiel new content (Quote form crate-forum: "As for what is beyond v1.2.0…now I am not saying there might be something more in the future…but maybe I am saying there is something more in the future…")
Grim Dawn 2 is all that's needed right now.
Just bought it thanks
I have 2100 hours in it before i burned out of it. It was a great game.
Just revived some older question. Didn't saw that
Great review as always!
you should relook at Last Epoch.
Patch 1.2 and new DLC on the way
Not to forget it has mod support.
Maybe it’s time to put a pause on trying to learn POE and try Grim Dawn.
Personally, for me, Grim Dawn is better than POE. The more complexity is not always better. In case of POE, it is already a bloat.
PoE is extreme, yeah.
@@Wergliahope poe 2 is better for me grim dawn has the best optimization out of all arpgs.
ye i agree. i played Poe A LOT! but the game is a clusterf*ck. it lost track of itself.
this guy sold me
