- Union Pacific's UP4014, otherwise known as Big Boy. The largest steam engine built in the entire world. This 1.1 million pound locomotive of American machinery of 1941 has finally returned west on its "Westward Tour". Starting from its home over in Cheyenne, Wyoming, Big Boy has made his way through the states of Wyoming, Utah, Nevada and finally California.
Early morning, July 11th, 2024, Big Boy departed Portola, California, U.S.A. for Union Pacific's Roseville Yard in Roseville, California, U.S.A. to complete its first part of its Westward tour.
What makes this even more special and unique is Big Boy's helper unit. Big Boy is tough but just needs a little push here and there, so to provide that push and dynamic braking is non other than UP1983, Union Pacific's SD70ACe Western Pacific heritage unit.
Lets have a look as we follow Big Boy out the mountains of Feather River Canyon, through the farmlands of Marysville to end up in urban Roseville. We also observe the train consist of Big Boy get broken up by the yard crew in some GP units, but also Big Boy and UP1983 as it goes on display for many Union Pacific employees and their families for a private event.
Hope you all enjoyed. Please make sure like, subscribe, favorite and share with others.

Very awesome video! Terrific job
Very nicely done.
I’ll be the tomorrow with my Dad, three boys & my late grandfather in spirit who loved steam!
I’m not going to make it up there tomorrow, but I respect that and Thanks! I remember the first time seeing a Box car being delivered to a location in Berkeley as a kid and my Dad wanted us to see how the cars are delivered to the locations coasting alone too the stop. It’s a memory that is good to know about the future of Oldies! 😂👍💪❤️🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸! Respect to all who know about the BayArea railways that were Giant! I’m not that old to tell about the trolly cars in the past, but the tracks are still there!
Nice loco steam🎶👍❤️👍
Fourtyfourteen
Great luck capturing this train on video! Lots to love! #BIgBoy
5:30 - Ha! You spotted me down by the searchlights!
For anyone wondering, the reason why UP 1983 is with the 4014, it is because the unit originally with 4014 was a standard Dash-9, but during the event in Portola California, with the Western Pacific 0-6-0 #165, which is the only operation WP steam locomotive, and the 4014, the 1983 was brought up as a surprise for fans at that event. The unit was swapped with the Dash-9 originally with 4014.
Man I wish if today when I was there I wanted to see a capital corridor Amtrak meet THE KING OF THE RAILS!!!
👍
Scrub forward to 4:31 for the start of Big Boy!!
🍪
3 dynamos for a single steam Locomotive is actually kinda crazy ngl
they need the extra power for PTC beast of a loco
If it allows it to run without a diesel on a lot of Union Pacifics Subdivisions, then it's a worthy tradeoff. Plus it helps in case of needed electricity.
Just another day in America, UP4014 is going in one direction, and the pusher is facing away, give the planner a bonus ,NOT
