    Thank you Peter...another great one and like you say he is Rugby Royalty...I miss watching him play..Those two penalty kicks from 50 plus agianst NZ is etched into my brain...you could see the AB team heads just dropped...Very glad to see him at the Cheetahs nowadays and passing on that experience and rugby smarts with so many new players...although if you told me in 2007 that Frans will be the Director of Cheetahs rugby I would have laughed...Should have had 100+ games for the Bokke but ja..it is what it is...agian thank you and have a blessed week..

      Glad you enjoyed it, Sakabula! He was a superb player, wasn't he? I can tell you as well from my interaction with him on this interview that he is a top, top guy!
      Agree, he should have had 100 caps plus. Such a shame the coaching and selection policies we had at the time but as you say, it is what it is. You have a blessed week too!

      @@frontrowrugby Yes you can gather that...I won't mention the channel but I saw an interview with him by Jean de Villiers and Schalla and you can see he is a down to earth kid of person..reflects in this interview as well..he was never interested in the politics...he was there to play rugby...

      Haha, Wilbur. I thought his English was great. To be honest I appreciate the guys coming on here and speaking English since most of them are Afrikaans or Xhosa first language and they do a great job for the most part.

    Frans Steyn hit his peak in 2011 and kept that prime till about 2016 .
    All those years except for 2011 he wasn't playing for the Springboks .
    His peak was wasted in Paris.
    In 2011 when Jean De Villiers got injured like he always does in WC's, Frans Steyn stepped into the 12 jersey and was even better than De Villiers.
    We needed him at Ellis Park in 2013 vs The All Blacks in the Game of the Decade , we needed him in 2015 World Cup especially in that semi final .
    For me had Steyn remained in SA he'd have 150 tests and would be considered the greatest 12 and 15 utility player in Rugby history.
    He's still a legend for what he did from 2006-2011 but if you're a real rugby fan you know it was very very hard watching UA-cam highlights of Staying in 2012 landing kicks from his own 22 and from goals from 75ms knowing damn well that a generational talent was lost to the Top 14

      He was a wonderful player. Everything you've said here just further hammers home for me the ridiculousness of not selecting overseas-based players. I know in South Africa it was an issue for a long time but thankfully now sanity has prevailed.
      In a professional sport the best players play where the best salaries are on offer. It makes sense then that our players will be highly sought after in France, England and Japan. Let them go there. We can't compete with those salaries in any case. There are international windows when they come home and play for the Boks.
      Rassie and Jacques managed this really well by introducing the alignment camps. Problem, if there ever was one, solved!
      It's only dinosaur administrators who wanted to keep our players in South Africa or only select players based in South Africa.
      Australia currently do something like that and look at where it's left them! New Zealand are going to follow unless they open themselves up.

    What a legend. I cried when he left to go play in Europe. I think it was the fullback that went over in 2002, Delport?

      Legend all the way! I'm glad we select overseas-based players these days. It's the way it should be in a professional sport in my opinion.
      Delport did indeed go overseas but it was the guy who pretty much came after him that scored the winning try. Werner Greeff!

    Great interview.. thanks gents... i remember being frustrated with Meyer fot not including Frans in the side during his tenure... i still believe Meyer could have been a great bok coach but ultimately had too many 'blind' spots..

    • @frontrowrugby
      @frontrowrugby  4 місяці тому

      Thanks for the comment as always! No doubt Frans is one of the greats and a combination of coaching and poor selection policy on the part of SARU meant this wonderful player missed out on 100 Tests in my view.

    • @blaquenguni9249
      @blaquenguni9249 4 місяці тому +2

      Meyer was an egomaniac who thought he was bigger than the game .
      Frans Steyn ,Gio Aplon, Heinrich Brussow and CJ Stander are all his blunders who should've been 50-100 cap Springbok legends

    Could have been great but most certainly fell far short off the mark. Left for France during his prime..came back overweight and was just a good Bok appearing sporadically in the team. He most certainly had all the attributes to be the best FB we ever had. That missed conversion in the Super 12 final has to give him nightmares..right in front.

      Why do you think they force the "Frans is an icon " narrative so hard ?...I find it quite odd having watched his debut and his entire Bok career .
      He peaked in 2011 and left im his peak 5 years and came back fat

      @@blaquenguni9249 because his talent was immense..he was 6ft 3..105kg..almost immediately played well for the Sharks as a fly half.. scored a try on his debut against Ireland as a 18 year old..remember that 2006 year quite well..then 07-09 he played his best. Some players peak early..he was real good till 2011..then left..had the drop kick highlights in France on youtube..and didnt do much after that..was just a good player playing off promise and those first 4 years built up reputation. Maybe he believed the hype? He is lucky Rassie who is a Free Stater gave him that opportunity in 2019..he is also lucky he has the position at the Free State..its a buddy buddy system there if one is completely honest. Whenever I think of Frans Steyn..I think of 2006 to 09 when he had that long hair..and smiled alot on the field.
