I mean on paper, the chords and melody are pretty standard non-original but made by this particular bunch of musicians make it... er... spooky, magical, brilliant! I can never pick my favourite first Punk single. For me, 'Your Generation' along with the Sex Pistols' 'Anarchy in the UK' and The Damned's 'New Rose' share first prize.
Remember passing by members of generation X with Billy Idol on my way to school when I was 16, I had my biker's jacket, and pink dayglo Leopard print drainpipes on not to mention the spiked up hair!
Did gigs w him @ 9:30 Club DC back in the beginning. V decent bloke. No pretense. Knew he was lucky n gracious about it. Great shows, esp as he grew and found his legs. Got nary a bad word to say about the man . Friend o mine just saw him in NYC like y'day. Still delivers. Props.

My mum was dating him at this time she met him at a punk night she didn't know who he was , she ended up dumping him and then a few years later my mum's sister called her in the front room when they were watching top of the pops and said is that your ex boyfriend? Just fantastic. From the first wave of real punk, a brilliant call to arms songs by a great live band (my band did a tour with Generation X not long after this). Wonderful.
So the cutting of this video. Although it's 38 years ago ( I was 16) I recall there were a series of Generation X gigs at the Marquee - mid-week. The usual drill was we'd queue up along Wardour Street and then there was a long corridor into the venue - a large rectangular room. On the night we went we had to queue for longer than usual and they let us queue in the corridor. This had a safety glass panel into the venue, and we could see the band do a couple of numbers for the cameras with photographers wandering in front of the stage. That would be some of the shots in this video. Don't recall filming in the venue during the performance that night. Maybe they had done it the week before - so the different T shirt. It was around this time that the "white label" single appeared and was sold outside on the street for one Pound ( still have mine) a much harder version than the official release or the Peel tapes. Generation X was certainly not a "pop" group live. It was loud and and aggressive - maybe not as raucous as the Damned or belligerent as Sham 69 but getting there. And yes was very hot and sweaty in the Marquee.....

You got that right! Best front man ever and Derwood @17 was brilliant on guitar!! Mark; a great drummer & Tony did his thing on bass plus contributed to the lyrics equally w/Billy. they had a great chemistry & were very serious about their music so they gave it their all. I always thought they weren't recognized enough or given proper credit
yep danced to this song so much, in my bedroom listening to the album, cuz punk rock was hard in the late 70s, early 80s, in Southern California, not living in UK.
When I listen to this song I hear Bob 'Derwood' Andrews and Mark Laff. Yeah, I hear the vocals, but the fact is Bob and Mark played like their lives depended on it! I still listen to the first LP for this reason.
Also the song is not on any of their 3 main lps, but I have never listened to the early best of album, which I have only ever seen in a store in Bali back when CD was first released, 32 odd years ago, and I somehow thought the song would be on it but not having a CD player yet, I didn’t buy it….. regrets I’ve had a few, but then again , too few to mention….. lol, thanks for reading me

Weird to think how all the 1st gen UK Punk bands never were Punk bands in the modern sense, Gen X were a pop group with attitude, the Clash were Glam Hippy, the Damned were just to damn good, Buzzcocks wanted to be the Beatles, Souxsie looked down from Her Arty Ivory tower....But it was the best time of My life, Energy ,Fun , Politics all mixed up, and a sense of You can do this Yourself.
At the time, these bands were all labeled punk. I'm 55 and experienced the first and second wave of punk rock. Personally i like the first better because i was at a age where it blended in with my attitude in developmental stage. The second, labelled Hard Core (DK, Black Flag, Bad Brains), were more of a conditioning phase for me on how to apply this to everyday life.

Even the fucking Police died their hair blond and wore stripey jumpers, etc. The Sex Pistols were one household names that did actually sound punk... but they were a manufactured band too. Conversely a band not always classed as punk, The Stranglers, had a very authentic punk attitude that pervades their early stuff. A lot of the 'Post Punk' bands, like Crass, had a more authentic expression of the punk attitude even though they explored less cliched musical territory.

They were good, but generation x was considered the fakest punk around; exploiting the image as fashion and for it's outlandish image rather than real substance ... a signal to the death of punk. Even Adam Ant still had more punk cred when Phil Collins did drums for the Ants. Might be a bit harsh, but retrospectively, not really. Billy was out for glam and fame (like all those from Bromley with their fashion consultants) which is counter to what punk was ... so his move to mainstream pop was never a surprise to anyone. Pretty much everyone that had anything to do with Malcom McClaren were nothing more than manufactured Boy Bands (fashioned from the image of the New York Dolls).. including the Sex Pistols.
