  • Haven't launched a kayak myself in YEARS! Went out solo today to break in the new kayak. A couple complications for the trip - will work on improving those in the near future!
Will be at West Marine in San Carlos, CA Saturday May 28th 2022 from 11-2pm if you can stop by!

the first fish was 100% a yelloweye. good call on the release, they live to extremely long ages. the faded lateral stripe is almost always a telltale sign at that size

I recently got into fishing after watching your channel for several years at this point. I still haven't caught anything even after a few outings but I'm going to keep trying! It is so nice to get out in nature and start learning a new hobby. Thank you for all the lessons in all your videos over the years.

Recently got into it (again) myself! Life gets busy and all that. It's a great and soothing hobby for sure.
I'm into the mood now that an outing is good enough, catching something is secondary.
      Keep at it mate! :)

I remember when I first got into fishing, I went about 3 times a week for several months before I caught my first steelhead.
It can be a sort of learning process... for example, it took a while before I first started feeling steelhead bite my spinners. After that, I had to learn how to instantly set the hook (it becomes a reflex action that is triggered, the second you feel a nibble or bite).
After that, I had to learn how to tie a strong fishing knot, because when I was able to set the hook and really had a fish on, my lazy knots would break (knots are the weakest point of the fishing line).
Then, I had to learn how to set the drag on my spinning reel. Finally... I had a steelhead on, my line didn't break... my drag was set just right... and that fish was whipping through the water at 35 mph, like a torpedo with a broken gyroscope.
I say pick a species of fish, in local water that's easy to get to several times a month, and learn everything there is to know about them. Don't buy a lot of expensive gear at first. And mainly enjoy the time in nature, as well as the joy of learning. Be ready to cook that first fish!

Keep going man I learnt how to fish before youtube was a big thing and had to hike to spots that were free as almost every lake and pond where I lived was pay to fish(gotta hate the uk for that one) and never caught anything for 3 years and now that I'm in Canada I started trout fishing again to no avail for the first year and then one day it just clicked, I realized what I was doing wrong and how to change that now I fish for bass as have had another large learning curve but now have alot of fish under my belt and lots of species now

I'm a South African fisherman, been following you for many years. My wife and I love your channel and your content. Keep up the fantastic videos ❤️. Just a silly observation I've made over the years, American fishermen prefer the reel bail on the left, irrespective of their hand dominancy, whereas in South Africa it's the other way around.

Great video as usual. Well done releasing the Yelloweye, Matts! You mentioned possibly puncturing the swim bladder to get the fish to go down. Please note that generally rockfish experiencing barotrauma have their stomachs pushed out their mouth by their swim bladder. Puncturing them to decend them is according to the best science on the subject almost always fatal to the fish. There are a number of safe decenders available on the market.

Cut open a pool noodle to put over the kayak hitch carrier. It'll make the kayak slide onto the roof easier and protect the kayak a bit more from no longer sliding it against a steel post.

Yeah that was a nice yellow eye, you can also tell from that lateral line that goes from the front of the fish to the back. Nice fish for your first time back on a yak. Also I usually put a decent size taller cooler to house the fish in the back of the yak so I don’t have to deal with a seal snatching a fish.

Have a descending device ready. You can make a homemade one cheap. There are good videos. You tie on a barbless hook backwards with a weight to lower them down then jerk the hook out of their lower lip. I give you props for not letting seasickness stop you.

@@hxhdfjifzirstc894 Yes. Gets them back down where the bladder is compressed, or more compressed than the surface. Increases survival dramatically. That fish he caught could have been 40 to 50 years old and a big spawner. Some species of rockfish are incredibly slow growing and nearly got wiped out by over fishing. That's why those species must be released.

AWESOME VIDEO 📹 👏 👌 👍. I primarily fish for Steelhead and Salmon on the Klickitat River plus the Snake River below Ice Harbor Dam. However, I do miss crabbing and bottom fishing by Whidbey/Fidalgo Island/Deception Pass out of Cornet Bay. Good times. 👍
