One of the greatest pieces of sound-art ever. Has anyone before or since Wilde written in a way that fits a musical setting so well? It almost comes across like rap, if rap was written in prose.
Two years after first hearing this piece of music, I just now decided that I’d attempt to play the work. That made me realize something; this is in fact ‘danger music’(a genre of music that in some way is dangerous to either the performer or audience). This is at least true for the beginning, which is not only difficult to play with the breathing instructions, but outright puts the performer into a state of hypoxia. In short, the beginning is musical hyperventilation. It only took me 5-10 minutes of practice, to almost loose consciousness. To all who wish to play this, practice with caution…
This is incredibly bizarre in the best and worst(only in the best sense of the word) way possible. I have never felt the same feelings of fear, excitement and eeriness from any other piece of music. This piece truly sent chills down my spine. The sort of odd poetry and ‘noises’ that this piece contains, creates a terrifying yet amazing and beautiful atmosphere, which is unparalleled by anything that I have ever heard. The artist who is performing this piece is not only showing incredible technical abilities, but also an incredible ability of interpretation and a beautiful voice, which fits the atmosphere of this piece. I haven’t heard of this composer before now, but i am already sad to not have known of him before his death. I have only heard one single piece of music by this extremely poetic musician, which after only a single listen i cant begin to understand, yet I have felt things i had not before. May he rest in peace.
Really Excellent composition for speaking pianist. Love the different sound worlds achieved. Unfortunately I cannot whistle so the demands of this piece is beyond my abilities.

Masterpiece.
RIP Rzewski
Absolutely agree to both sentiments. Also a spectacular performance.
excelent composition which i was astonished to hear yesterday on a concert with Daan Vandewalle interpretation. Invention by a master...

Brilliant
10:40 so, there's not a single composer that fails to pay homage to Bach?
Interesting piece
For me what is harder than prefer itself is to memorize the quotes in the music.
