I have been playing lotro since beta. I love it. My favorite part of games are the quests. I have played wow but didn't like the intense way people played. Like the slow pace. of lotro. You can spend a day doing so many different things.

After playing WoW for 10 years, FFXIV for about 1 year and LOTRO for about 40 hours...
LOTRO is a way better game. Now, LOTRO could use some upgrades when it comes to small things like the map UI, character models, the online store (cosmetics only please) and a better dungeon finder/group finder. With that said, LOTRO has been one of the best experiences in an mmorpg that I've ever had so far. And as a free player! I will probably sub to the game once I hit 95 and buy the expansions if the game continues to be this good and beautiful. The starting area was a bit of a chore to get through but I did enjoy the story and beauty of it. What I REALLY LIKE about LOTRO though is the attention to detail. Every place I have been so far has been very well designed and I can tell it was made with a lot of love and care. I cannot say the same about WoW. Just go to the Stormwind AH and tell me how much detail is in there. It looks like someone made it in minecraft. lol
I went into a random tavern in LOTRO and explored it some. Went upstairs and then downstairs. When I got down there I heard a ghostly sound. Very creepy whispers. At first I thought it was coming from something else and not the game but it WAS the game I later found out. I got a quest to investigate the strange noises in the tavern. "I'm not crazy!", I thought. Turns out there is a secret doorway through a bookshelf that takes you deeper under the tavern and I came to a magical doorway covered in runes and symbols. I clicked on it and a riddle came up. I had to solve the riddle by using emotes! And yes i used /smoke while I thought about how to solve the riddle just like Gandalf lol. Oh btw there is a /smoke! Once I figured out the correct emote I went in even further and there were more doors to open. This was one of the best quest and game experiences I have had EVER. Such a cool way to bring that world to life and challenge the player. LOTRO is not as easy as WoW is when it comes to leveling and questing either. I actually died a few times lol. I don't think WoW has ever made me feel the way this quest did. LOTRO makes me genuinely want to adventure, knowing the world is actually kind of dangerous. My entire experience so far has been similar to this quest I stumbled upon in a random tavern.
For the last year I have been playing FFXIV and loving it. I can tell they had a lot of influence from LOTRO when making it. The two games feel very similar. I must say I enjoy the questing in LOTRO much much more than in FFXIV as well. FFXIV does a lot of things right. Especially dungeons and raids. The questing in FFXIV though is confusing, not very engaging, too easy/simple , has way too many cutscenes, doesn't feel rewarding and so on. The end game stuff is great but getting there was tedious. WoW questing is all over the place. Once you out level an area you move on to the next, skipping a ton of story and content (even skipping entire expansions) so players have no idea what is going on if they are even reading the text. AND WoW has so many weird systems that don't even work and are pointless to even do like the weapons in Legion and Garrisons from Dreanor. That is confusing to new players. So I think where LOTRO shines bright, FFXIV (and WoW too) does not. I would say LOTRO is way more similar to FFXIV though as far as graphics, player housing, role playing, great community and attention to details in the environments, making them feel alive and real. WoW feels old and outdated compared to other mmos these days. It's just more of the same every time they release new content. More of the same. WoW for sure has some good stuff in it. Some good quests and story but it is few and far between for new players trying to make it through the game. They just come out the other side feeling confused. FFXIV at least has a linier story questline so players know what happened throughout the game once they hit level cap.
Anyway, I didn't mean to write a ton but it just kind of happened. Soooooo yeah. Try LOTRO if you haven't. It is FOR SURE worth your time. Plus it is FREE to level 95. I think the level cap is 130? I'm not actually sure but it is a ton of content for ZERO dollars. WoWs free to level 20 is a joke. FFXIV and LOTRO have the right idea as far as giving away a lot of content for free. They want you to experience the game enough to say yes I will gladly pay for the rest of the game. LOTRO has had its ups and downs over the years but it looks like the company is owning up to their misdeeds to the community and trying to make it better. I look forward to the rest of the content. I just love exploring the zones and really taking in the beauty that is middle earth. I've always been a LOTR fan so I'm not sure why it's taken me so long to try this game. WoW kind of took over my mind and made me believe that WoW was the best mmo of all the mmos and other games that weren't enough like WoW were trash. It was my identity. Now being WoW free for a year I can see why I was so toxic. WoW kind of made me act that way and think those things without me realising it until I quit the game.
AAAAAAAnywayyyyyyy (again), if you read this far you are very cool. Thank you and have a nice day. 🎃

Been playing Lotro since 2012 when I took my first break from wow, I've played it on and off over the years..a lot more since Legion ended.
Forgot to add, do I think is one better than the other? well I do believe Lotro is better in a lot of ways and not so great in other but they have made some really good changes recently when it comes to the Legendary weapons. The biggest thing for me is the leveling and the questing in each zone AND the epic quest which are very important in a lot of ways.
The game has a lot of charm and of course the Lore? it's Lord of the Rings..

I play both. I seem to always miss the other when I only play one at a time. Playing wow gives me my PVP craving that I tend to have while playing lotro, but PvP is stressful so it’s nice to explore lotro! But I’m a long time lotro so my pick is lotro. If lotro had raid mechanics and PVP like wow it would literally be the perfect MMO

Keep up the positivity and good vibes! Lotro player here, coming and going. Lotro makes you feel your character has a place in that special environment that is the game. The amount of details is simply astonishing. And it has housing :)) Not a generic one, it has one style for each race and now it has the paid ones which you can get with LP Just to mention a thing, I could talk about this game for hours XD
On a side note about WoW's UI, I don't agree XD WoW needs good addons to make a nice UI with all the details and versatility you need. In WoW you can't move the UI elements freely. In Lotro you can move them at your heart's content. I have that key in Ctrl+ç and it's a quality of life feature I can't live without.
About Lotro Pvp it has one of the most original pvp systems I've ever seen, since you can play as a creep against the free peoples. You can play as a monster (orc, spider, warg...) and learn their special abilities. You get to play a whole new race with their skills, not your op human or elf character (if you choose to do so). Where else can you play the baddies? XD
There's something else in favour of Lotro, the outfits system (called transmog in WoW). You cam recolor and have as an outfit every existing armor in the game. And you don't have to pay to change outfit.

A little late to this vid but I'm a WoW player too, specifically Classic WoW I'm definitely a fan of old games and LOTRO's age doesn't scare me away. Appreciate the video but it left me wanting more of an in depth compare/contrast between the 2 games from a WoW player's perspective. Just an idea for a future vid.
Like how do the classes compare, if I play Paladin in WoW what class(es) might I like in LOTRO? Or how fast paced is the combat, global cooldown differences? What are the sizes of dungeons/raids, etc can I solo any of these dungeons/raids by outleveling them or do I need a group? How quick is it to group in LOTRO, is there a dungeon finder or will I be using chat channels to form groups like in Classic WoW? How is server stability and lag? From what you said in the vid LOTRO's expacs build out the existing world as opposed to WoW's expacs that send you to different continents, is that right? (If we ever were to get a Classic+ from Blizz I'd way prefer LOTRO's style then WoW's style of adding to the world).
Anyways, just some example questions there. I'm still enjoying playing Classic a lot Wrath is just around the corner but you're totally right WoW is generally a pretty fast paced go go go MMO. Looking to play LOTRO on the side if I feel like chillin.

    • @TBPetitP
      @TBPetitP 2 роки тому +1

I have seen that old school WoW players tend to enjoy more LOTRO than the ones that like the new expansions. If you like the paladin the closest class in LOTRO would be Captain, its a heavy armour melee class that stands out for it's buffs. It has some healing if Im not mistaken. Combat is quite fast paced I'd say, dnno what globl cooldown differences means but each class has 3-4 very short CD abilities that you can kinda spam, and some other more specific that range from 15s cooldown to 2m for the more game-changing ones. The sizes of groups are 3 (small fellowship), 6 (Fellowship) and 12 (Raid), you can solo small fellowship content being a bit over leveled or at the top of your gear/traits capacities. Grouping is make by dungeon finder and how long it takes depends and how populated your server is and what instance you're searching for, low leveled and end game ones are the fastest to get to. The game is a bit laggy sometimes but the devs are working on it and it's been improving, it's not a constant thing tho, sometimes there's lag, sometimes you play the whole day without an issue. Yeah, new expansions in LOTRO add to the content instead of destroying existing landscape like WoW.
I think you might enjoy LOTRO, it has a great community and questing is top notch.

I’ve played WoW since vanilla and even met my husband during TBC in Shattrath city. However, have stopped playing in the last few expansions due to not recognizing the game and not liking the direction the game is being taken.

WoW is older, but it's had it's engine updated regularly. But with updates, WoW has gotten worse, until just following the Mists of Padnora, I gave it up for good. It was a number of changes, that in my opinion, made it more of an adventure game than an RPG.

With heavy heart I have to say wow, just because Lotro as great game as it is has major server issues, stability issues, no eu servers, latecy issues and these are just far to large of a problems to simply be ignored. Fun wise games are neck to neck but one nearly works.

I’ve been playing LOTRO since beta and I’m rarely at the level cap. I’m usually close, but I just never feel like there’s a hurry. The end game raids can be fun, but that’s when I really feel like I’m just playing a game instead of being immersed in a world.
I think this video captures that difference. LOTRO is so much more about the world and the lore than the end game.
When I was younger the raids appealed to me a lot more, whether LOTRO or WoW. But I’m older and have kids and I need a world I can dip into for an hour or two a few times a week. Or when I’m re-reading the books and I want to run around the area the characters are in and find all the Easter eggs the devs have stuck in.

    LOTRO - Relaxing leveling experience:
I started during the Pandemic giveaway and have played fairly constantly. I have over 4.5k quests competed and I'm finishing up Rohan and almost to Gondor. I think I still have months until I reach level cap.
I'll probably take a break on my main and try the new leveling experience, stop that will take longer (once I figure out what to play......)

  • @Scrooge042

WoW has been my main MMO for a long time, but I have also played LotRO since its launch in small intervals during downtime between patches and expansions. I think in the end it comes down to WoW offering a much more balanced, polished experience, which is not surprising considering both devs respective resources. Also I really love endgame content like raids and mythic+ and I believe that WoW offers the best of that in the business still.
There's no substitute for a night of awesome progression raiding with your friends imo, just pushing yourself to the limit. LotRO can supplement that with some nice and quiet exploration gameplay combined with questing. The janky rotations/balancing and lag make group content a no-go for me in that game sadly.
Also, Warcraft isn't based on any books, but on the trilogy of RTS games that preceded the MMO. Since then, there have been plenty of books released in tandem with big game events, often providing deeper lore background of things glimpsed in game for those who want it, but it is a game franchise by origin.

Ive played both, but recently stopped WoW. Im not really into the "forced grind" that WoW has been giving for the past few xpacs, and if there is a grind, I like to see the results and feel accomplished (example is leveling LI's in lotro, or mount unlocks from rep). Only issue I have currently with Lotro is that the classes/systems are a bit clunky at times, and Id like to see some sort of class reworks.

@@BrightlifeMMOs Before Update 33 I would have said LM because it really needed one lol; but now Id personally say either red line mini or red line captain (both of which to make them a tad more solo friendly... ie like they did with red line guard). It just seems to me like some of the more fellowship-oriented classes may not be as solo friendly to someone that wants to play the class not necessarily to group or raid or such.

However as stated in the vid, it really is a friendly community and as luck would have it, I landed in a great Kinship (guild)! Take the plunge like I did and make a few friends, try a few guilds, you’ll eventually find one that suits you and don’t be afraid to jump guilds until you find the one that fits.

You have to be a 100% PvE fan to appreciate the beauty of LOTRO. If that is what people are looking for, I would suggest Dungeons and Dragons Online as well.
While I was spoiled by a game most don't know (Dark Age of Camelot: 3 realms, dozens of races and classes per realm, each realm with its complete continent in geography), WoW was at least for me, not a bad PVP game because at least I knew I had something more than pixels to try to contend with. There are a ton of negatives with world PVP (we all know them). But game AI, especially older games, just doesn't feel immersive to me.
So, even with being ganked, camped, and griefed in general, as annoying as that is, the rush of getting people together to defend (I was never into attacking a leveling zone), is as close to fun as I've ever felt in a game.
Sadly or for the best, WoW is down to 1 Season of Mastery server of note, a few decently sized TBC servers (of course they won't merge and scare the investors), and a lot of hype for the next classic expansion - AFTER the summer passes (which is lol in itself).
I have this dark feeling that the era of competitive RvR/PvP gaming is long dead and never really got off the ground to begin with.
Time to read more books and watch more TV, lol.

Oh, I miss DAoC! Their PVP was much better than any other MMO I've tried. I don't understand why more MMO's don't do 3 sides instead of only 2. With only 2 sides it's too easy to get unbalanced servers. With DAoC the other 2 sides could take down the top realm & keep things more interesting.

Tried Lotro recently, it was fun for a bit and enjoyed being immersed, But the game is so so clunky especially if you play a spellcaster, it's probably extra since im from EU and heard that the servers are in the US, and the talent trees are bad for new players, for example things you can improve as soon as you get a talent point for rune keeper is Self-motivation, A skill that unlocks at lvl 36.
And smaller but similar issue: lore master gets "Kindred Flame" once 5 points have been used in the blue tree, wich improves inner flames whitch requires 6 points.. thats fine however that means you will ALWAYS have the improved version from investment into that tree no matter what, so isn't it a pointless bonus? theres a lot of those things, not a big deal but it's really strange.
but yeah the point being the combat is jank and not very responsive, sometimes you can't interrupt the spellcast, or if you want to start casting after moving you'll have to wait an extra moment before you can cast "normally you can do that in other games as soon as your character stops moving". which dodging aoe's extra annoying.
I did enjoy my time in it as said, but having trouble getting past the bad quirks.
"side note: I wrote this after waking up, so my head is a little fuzzy. might be a few errors"

I love Middle-Earth lore so much but I find it very hard to play LOTRO because it looks so bad visually, even playing it at 4K doesn’t make it look remotely good. I can’t get immersed in it because of that. Maybe I’m spoiled with ESO 🤷🏻‍♂️

Ok so this is one of the best Videos I've seen in a while. Positive vibes! Thank you.
I am self employed so I don't have much time either, but I'd really like starting a (casual) MMORPG. Question: Is it very difficult playing lotro without knowing Tolkien and lotr's core lore? Or, in a sense, is actually beneficial? I can read the books alongside to the game actually 😮. This will take a while though 😅

Being familiar with the books/movies will give you a richer game experience, I think, but it's certainly not necessary. Though you will miss out on that moment of happy glee when you come across something in the game that you read about. I was super excited the first time I found Bilbo's trolls out in the world. ;)

The deal breaker for wow.... its played by too much Gen Z's.
Which is to say that the player base are kind of a bunch of whiney babies.
Its either 14-19 year olds - or 60+ year olds. With few exceptions.
Back in the early days of wow - when the millennial's were still young - we were just getting to experience voice chats for the first time and everyone was just so happy to meet each other.
Now - everyone is either pc and woke or cynical and cruel.
    The silence is deafening.
Its kind of mind blowing that a person can spend hundreds of hours grinding out an end game character - and after a few hours of woke talk - people just give up on the game entirely.
The idea of being subjected to either
    A) Woke care bear guilds - "the fun police" - monitoring the discord so hard that people will just rage quit out of frustration. Daily.
    Or
B)Toxic incarnate guilds - who will tear each other down and say things that make you want to track them down, bend them over your knee, and spank them. "No! Bad teenager! Bad!"
Made me give WOW a hard pass.
I don't need to be brain washed by activists or be torn a new one by giga nerds.

i like lotro, but its content is so trivial that it might as well not even be a game. ESO has a similar problem. I'd play the shit out of LOTRO if I could get deadly+ difficulty without the eye of sauron nonsense on a normal server. It's kinda obnoxious because it's the sort of change they could implement in the span of an afternoon and yet they've refused to do it for years.

just pointing out. It takes 4-5 days to 50 (casual playing) and it took me 4 month of playing casual + sometimes hardcore to reach 130. Its not that slow...I think that is a + because a mmorpg needs time until you are max. If you can rush in 1 month to max the game is not rlly good...and a game that is only about endgame doesnt make a game better. The whole experience is the point. They are trying to make lotros endgame better. Umbar is a start. If they add more in the future the game will be sooner or later better than wow lol.

      @flixfeliks 10 місяців тому

there are some ways to make it better (like I mentioned) You can play nearly without lag if you do it that way and one small lag every 2-3 hours are not game breaking at all + the game pauses when you have that issue - unlike most mmorpgs. Cause its not a real lag (server wise)@@mechwarrior13

I've been playing LOTRO since beta, and I love it, so don't get me wrong, it's a great game and it absolutely has a place in my gaming rotation. However, WoW is light years better as a product. An actual functioning random dungeon finder system. Multiple updated ways to level, experiencing whichever expansion you want to experience. No constant lag. Updated graphics and UI. Group finding tools for all levels of in game content (easily create a raid, mythic plus dungeon, or a group to kill a world boss or do a quest, or find a rare, etc), instead of having to spam chat over and over. Again, I love LOTRO, but it's severely lacking many features to put it over the top.
I think people are confusing the community with the game. LOTRO's community is by and large an excellent community. You run into the odd $%^& every once in a while, but for some reason WoW's community is full of them. I have a thick skin, and it doesn't bother me, but my wife has absolutely stopped playing mythic dungeons unless it's a full group of our friends IRL playing.
I realize it's not for everyone, but I also really enjoy the fast paced, competitive playstyles of both arena and mythic plus. I know LOTRO is working on something like a M+ system, so hopefully that will be fun, but there's nothing like arena. The Moors are ok, but lag and imbalance still hinder fun there.
I would LOVE for LOTRO to update their systems, UI, group finder system, etc because it would truly be a superior game if it did all of that, but I recognize it will take a long time without a ton of money to throw at it. I know some of those things are a work in progress, but I think we're talking years as a timeframe unfortunately. In the meantime, I'll settle for them reducing lag slightly, so at least my warden is playable.

Imo LOTRO. The lore is well... THE lore. The world is fantastic, that's the middle earth that we love, the immersion and roleplay that you can do is UNLIMITED. For lotr fans is a dream came true, really, incredible, unmatched.
But if you're not a Lotr fan well... maybe this world will catch you, with his chill but epic vibes, with his perfect story and legacy... but maybe not, and that would be boring, cause you will not understand well what's happening. For enjoy REALLY lotro, you must enjoy lotr.
WOW, FF, and other mmo dosn't require this, so maybe if you're not a Tolkien fan will be a better place. In WOW the combat is better, a lots of system are better, but WOW will never reach the emotions that you will obtain with LOTRO exploring the Middle Earth WHEN and HOW you want, cause that's no rush, no "must", it's your adventure, your story, you can go everywhere when you want.
    (And the community it's better)

As a WoW player since 2004 and a LOTRO player since 2021, I immediately began analyzing which was better. WoW has this amazing magic of splitting into two factions where you can fight someone in the middle of nowhere. The gameplay of both games is very enjoyable, as if WoW has a slightly more dynamic feel to the battles. LOTRO is an incredibly beautiful game, the NPCs create a realism that WoW lacks. I saw an NPC chopping a stick, another peeling an apple, another playing a pipe while others danced around him, a woman washing clothes, a dwarf in love courting a human woman, an angry man banging on his broken down cart. Still, one thing I didn't like about LOTRO was the lack of factions and PVP. I also don't like how everyone who carries a shield always keeps it in their hand instead of tucking it away on their back, I really don't like that.

  • @Diantane

I played WoW for several years and i finally left for good. Why? The first problem was on W0W you are playing a "toon." The graphic puts you into a cartoon. Totally unrealistic. The other major problem is WoW was it was just too crowded. Every time I was working on a quest, there were a dozen players in front of me. The last problem that I had was everyone were playing the same "cookie" cutter" builds. There was no creativity. You have to play this build, this rotation and grind, grind, grind. Enough! I'm out of here for good.
Then I started playing Lotro. No toons here! The world was much more realistic and beautiful. I hear nothing about a cookie cutter build or rotations. I can play like i want to play. I climb to the top of a mountain and there are little to no players around me unless I am playing with friends. There is no grinding. Its just very laid back and enjoyable. And the quests are all about the storyline from the books. Just a rewarding experience. Have now been here for several years and I'm staying.

the only problem Lotro has which makes it far more unplayble than wow is lvling
goddamn it man, why is lvling so slow? it literally takes AGES to level ur character to cap, i've been playing this game for years (droping it and revisiting from time to time) and i haven't reached a cap lvl just beacause the lvling is so tedious that around lvl 90 u just get exhausted and loose all interest in game, happens to me all the time, they should do something about it, for real

WoW is a good game its greatest problem is Blizzard itself, while LOTRO's developers have taken great decisions throught out the years the game has existed. This sole reason makes LOTRO far more probable to keep existing while WoW might not. Im not saying WoW will disappear now, but with Blizzard making all those bad decisions is just a matter of time before they will be forced to shutdown, a shame in deed, but there is nothing we can do.

I stopped playing lotro a few years back, because of the 'Moors. (pvp area). I've never been into pvp before or since then, but it was my main reason for playing the game once I got into it there. Sure, the rest of the game is great as well, but that single map was a close-knit community, where I had fun building a rep as the warg who was a terrible fighter and just liked to play with the freeps. Old-timers might even remember Daizee from Landy :D
It was just an afterthought that the devs threw in, as a side game. Purely by accident, it turned out to be a really unique and fun PvP mode, which they slowly destroyed over the years until it wasn't remotely fun anymore. I think they wanted it to go away so they wouldn't need to put effort into balancing. If you experienced it in it's heyday, when you had to actually work for ranks and skills by fighting, and not questing or leeching, I think you'd change your stance on WoW's pvp being better. It was the best online experience this PvE focused player has ever had.
But that was the past, not now. RIP.
Lotro sits at my number 3 spot of best mmorpg of all time, it's still a great game, but GW2 is my home. I wouldn't put WoW even in my top 10, although I gave it a fair chance and wanted to like it. ( EQ2 is at number 2, not that anyone cares, lol )
