- The 1982 World Cup Draw was introduced by Brian Moore alongside the England goalkeeper Ray Clemence in London and a link up with Asa Hartford (of Scotland) and Martin O'Neil (Northern Ireland) who were both sat in a Granada TV studio in Manchester, Jim Rosenthal described the procedings from Madrid. This draw was memorable for the enormous mechanical revolving drums which were used to select the teams and, at one point, broke down, and also a mix-up at the start of the draw which saw Scotland placed in the wrong group. This proved to be the only time machines rather than people were employed to make the draw. Original Broadcast: 6:00-6:45pm on the 6th June 1982.

Thanks for this interesting programme on the 1982 World Cup draw. Listened to it at the time on BBC radio-remember the confusion with Scotland's draw, also the sense of dread from the BBC commentator that England would draw Scotland. His overriding feeling at the draw's end was palpable relief that this meeting would not happen (fears about hooliganism at such a fixture).

Italy 🇮🇹 showed a poor performance in the first round.
But they didn't do well and were lucky to get out of the group. Cameroon deserved it more.

LOL I vaguely remember this as a kid. Watching it back now... what a load of bollocks that is. How is that a random draw? Last few teams are poked out by hand. West Germany paired with Austria for last game of group. What a fix that game was. West Germany needed the win but a 1-0 defeat for Austria would seem through too on goal difference. Germany went 1-0 up in first 10 minutes and the rest of the game both teams just passed it about between themselves.

Today this draw would cause lots of uproar. The system is not too complicated, but they put in mistakes from the start and did not even have a proper break to explain what they did to correct it. But if they could not even tell some hours ago how they would do it and if they had a tournament with the last group matches not played on the same day, and built pools with 3 teams for the second round not knowing who will be playing in group matches 2 and 3 - there were so many ridiculous decisions made before this tournament. Not a surprise that the draw had the same level of professional organisation...
It caused a lot of uproar then. This tournament was infamous for its poor management.

All these years later still don't understand the confusion at the start...why were Belgium moved out the Italy group and Scotland shoved into the Brazil group?
I've worked it out, Chile an Peru couldn't go with Argentina or Brazil. So the first 2 drawn out would go with firstly Argentina then Brazil. Then Chile an Peru could be put into the drum. Clearly itv hadn't got a clue that would happen

Seems madness that France weren't at the least a second seed. They more than proved their doubters wrong.
Remember, at this time France had never won a tournament, and often failed to qualify. However, they would reach the semi-final, which, kind of, started their glorious future.

They corrupted the draw from the first ball !!! Look at how many balls were on the table when after the 1st.. the 2nd gets brought out and there 3 total balls even though only 2 have been plucked from the lottery.. 😂😂 Belgium ended up in argentinas group in the end not Italy's 😂😂😂

I didnt know Italy had to play Belgium why did they change that ? Would have been a different world cup had these clowns not paddled that outcome back and Scotland would have made it
When the draw was first done the 2 South American sides balls were not included. The first two European sides drawn Belgium and Scotland were supposed to be put directly into the groups with South American teams, but they forgot to do this, but then realised and moved them across when the South American balls were added, if that makes sense.
England were seeded for 82???? They weren’t at the top table for 12 years and stumbled through the qualifiers. Scotland should’ve been seeded. Shocking. Or as Ray said “we’ve won it 16 yrs ago…”

It was just a jokey statement of fact. Without even checking I'll guarantee that all of the players of both Northern Ireland and New Zealand at that time were the same colour.
