Scotland '78 - World At Their Feet
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 вер 2024
- This was an STV production (shown all across the UK) which set out to capture the mood of Scotland "getting ready to take on the world" at the 1978 World Cup, in its usual outrageous manner. Original Broadcast: 27th May 1978 - 22:15-23:15
The squad that we had in 78 was unbelievable.
That is one way to describe it.
Tommy Docherty " I think we're the BEST IN THE WORLD "....at what pissing it up🤔
So deliciously delusional. Having a party before they went way always tempting fate. McLeod had NO idea what he was doing.
Oh Boy, did that bubble burst 😂
Apart from the hype, Scotland's problem was that they had three key players either off the boil or injured - Dalglish/McGrain/McQueen and McLeod kept faith with his favourites at the expense of players in form - Souness/Johnstone/Gemmill.
And as of 2023, still never made it past group stage.
@@Ruda-n4h
MacLeod hardly helped himself.
Tommy Hutchinson was a far better bet than Willie Johnston.
The full back Kennedy was a mile out of his depth.
Ditto: Rough.
And so on, and so on.
MaCleod could have put somebody in front of the back four. The player did not have to be that good, just tenacious and disciplined. A bit like Stiles in 66.
The guy Hay, then at Chelsea, if he was fit? Aitken of Celtic? Bremner of Hibernian?
Perhaps things might have been better if MacLeod had looked at the opposition, made sure the team management were up-to-speed with the drug stuff etc. Had got someone to check out the team hotel and training ground.
There was not much bad luck involved. Scotland were lucky that the Holland-Peru match was a draw. If Holland won, their match against Scotland would have been a dead rubber. If Peru had won, the Dutch would gone into their match against Scotland with a far different attitude.
We showed what we can do when we played Holland. Every great English clubs had Scots in them, but rmbr our population is only 6 million to England's 55 million.
@@Ruda-n4hDalglish never played that well as he did with Liverpool, his goal tally wasn't that great.
My dad said that a few blokes he knew went and never came back from Argentina, met a bird over there and had a great time.
12 years later Ireland recycled most of those songs for their Italia 90 adventure. Never knew we nicked those tunes off the Scots interesting. 78 was before my time never realised till now that Scotland genuinely thought they were going to win that World Cup. Ireland arguably performed worse in 1990 than Scotland in 78. No win. Scored two goals from play in the whole tournament and reached the quarter final and were greeted to an ecstatic homecoming in dublin. Such a contrast. The margins at that level of sport are wafer thin.
and Dublin epitomized how low Irish expectations are of themselves. Ambition has never been a trait.
@@meisterlymanu5214 it came during a particularly gloomy period in Irelands existence in the 80’s. It was just an excuse to go a bit mad. Football is the poor relation in Irish sport.
A memorable performance against the mighty Iran that still epitomizes Scottish football to this day. 🤡🤡🤡
One of the worst performances ever by a British team.
They may sound laughable, but Iran were the three times in a row champions of the Asian Cup (1968, 1972, 1976) and we underestimated them. It's even tougher now, South Korea and even more so, Japan, are amazing sides and Scotland would have their work cut out against the top sides of Asia. For European teams, getting to the 2026 World Cup will mean having a maniacal siege-like mentality and once those teams get there, it really will be a siege...
“ and Iran have scored “ I still here those words now from the tv commentator
How did it work out?
Asking for a friend
How did Jimmy Savile work out😂
Don't ask.
05:41 full marks to this Jim langam lad! This was pre Internet era must have been v difficult back then to map out an itinerary...
What a great programme thanks! I was 11 at the time and couldn't believe Derek Johnston didn't even get a kick considering he was the highest scorer in Scotland at the time plus he scored in the British Championship! Plus Andy Gray should have replaced McQueen who wasn't even fit.
Leeds United fan here. Were Peter Lorimer or Eddie Gray not good enough to make this Scotland squad?! 🤔
How far did the guy on his bike get?
Still peddling.
To the next pub.
Glendarroch
he's had 3126 punctures and hasn't got out of Scotland yet..
By God if they could see how the 21st Century panned out ...
It's crazy to see how truly delusional the entire nation was back then ! 😂
Scotland expecting to win the WC. A whole nation smoking crack pipes lol.
Ally McLeod was a joke - he brought all the eventual fall out on himself by his ridiculous boasting before the World Cup. He totally underestimated Peru and Iran. And didn’t Danny McGrain look a bit like Harry Kane! 😂
Amazing, poor old Ali
Brought it on himself.
Ali made 50k in adverts and bought a pub in Killie
News for the reporter it wasn't the " big horn" but the "Little Big Horn" where General Custer and men of the 7th US Cavalry died.
McIllvaney had it spot on about football...not just Scottish football but British football.
Gold
Andy Cameron is an embarrassment and thats coming from a Rangers supporter.
Forever known as the pigeon squad
Peru Peru
I would like VAR to look at the two Cubillas goals, both had players in offside positions in my opinion.
I was on a school trip to Holland soon after the world cup from Aberdeen. To get there we had to go via England (Heathrow) and I remember very well the abuse/banter we got from the baggage handlers on the airport tarmac as we changed planes. We were only kids but we must have been decked in tartan to draw that attention. I do have a chuckle about that now when I think of that World cup.
They probably thought you were Bay City Rollers fans!
How sad is this nearly 50
years on
Hilarious really
That famous Englishman Rod Stewart no less.
he's not English he's yours....
Ach, we'll win it one day!
The fans soon turned on the manager & team weeks later, och aye.
all was going well................then the football started.
Too far above their station, keep it real. Have to say though, Ally Mc Cloud did a great job.He was a great player at Blackburn Rovers,
💎⚽️
They cheated to get there, and were paid out in full upon arrival. Plus, a joke of a manager.
That guy next to Denis Law at 13.00 was the proto Rab C Nesbitt
He was the football writer for the daily record
That didn't age well 🤣
Never realised Andy Cameron sang that song? Rangers guy supporting Scotland? 🥴
We're not all English supporters
Oh yeah! And a few years ago a tiddler country go one up against England in roughly a minute! Etc.etc.etc.etc. 😂😂😂 l also remember " YOUR BOYS TOOK ONE HELL OF BEATINGGGG!!!!!" 😂😂😂😂😂
Yea... that really hurt us.
Maggie Thatcher! Winston Churchill!! 😂😂😂
have Scotland ever taken their luggage from the airport to their hotel...
McIllvaney was a blethering twit
He was right.
His brother was the very wise guy after the event in TV programes about Argentina 1978.
I wonder what he had stated in print before Scotland went to Argentina?..
Scotland''s lost generation, The problem that the Scots had was gloating over England's failure and took there eyes of the prize that they had a great chance of victory.
We always gloat of the sassanachs's failure. In 74 we didn't lose a match at the finals but still came home early & in 78 the Holland game told you that we can beat the best & Holland were the best team in the 70s.
At least they got there unlike england
Scotland had an easier group. The Czechs were a ghost of the team they had been, when winning Euro 76.
@@Ruda-n4h
The Czechs got kicked off the park, after having to travel to Scotland without getting any rest before he match.
@@Ruda-n4h I wouldn't say that, they still had their winger Nehoda, one of the best players in the world in the 1970s. Scotland had great sides from 1972-1982, but we didn't make it, as did many great sides. Belgium had great players, clubs, USSR never made it to Argentina. Sweden were poor in 1978 after being excellent in 1974. France got it together during 1978 to become great under Hidalgo and win Euro 84 after the magic and drama of the semi final of 1982.
Football is a weird and wonderful world, you never know what is going to happen. Austria would win Euro 2024, I could see that happening. It won't be France or England, not in Germany, but Austria could have the _Kühnheit_ to upstage their ancient host rivals!
@@thevillaaston7811 Due to an air traffic controllers’ strike, the Czechs were forced to take the train from London to Glasgow at night with no sleeping accommodations possible. They requested a 24-hour postponement from FIFA, which was refused.
@@GordonCaledonia Wales clobbered then 3-0 and Nehoda was only one player. Scotland have never had a great side, neither have Belguim, only one or two competent ones - they have had some very good individuals. France were excellent yes and the Soviets were too defensive until 1981 when with their blend of Ukrainians and Georgians looked very good in '81 but were very disappointing at the World Cup the next year.
😅😅😅
Scotland were robbed!
what deluded tosh. The best players in 78 were nowhere near Europe. They were all South American.
The best players in 78 were nowhere near Europe
... or Scotland.
Going in there with the "I hate the English" attitude probably wasn't a good idea
look at Connolly as usual being about as funny as Cod Roe
Cubillas remains one of the greatest players of all time and his two goals against Scotland are classic, magical goals. We played great against Holland. It was the Iran game where we shat it, although Iran were no slouches, they we 3-in-a-row champions of Asia going into this. We were and are, a small nation but we produced great players and no one knows what the future will hold. Scotland, just as most nations this century, has the potential to become world-class. Croatia are, Uruguay are, Matjaž Kek's Slovenia are also a fine side. Small, quiet nations, but they produce great players, managers and passionate fans. This will be a thrilling decade for international football.

Good on them, not like some South American teams.
