Totally agree with you, Rob. It was time for a change and so far Macdonald looks to be a great choice. Accountability also jumped out at me a key takeaway from this along with his communication style. He is a direct and efficient communicator per what is outlined in the article and I think that is a big factor which allows him to run such complex schemes. Being able to scheme them up is one thing, but to be able to teach in a way that is digestible and relatable is huge.

I was Team Pete for awhile especially after the ‘22 season. However, the cracks were there and the ‘23 season showed us that time had passed Pete and a change was needed. Also, Macdonald is the type of no nonsense coach that our team needs. Great vid Rob.

I have to admit that I was gutted to see Pete canned and would have kept him if it was up to me. It didnt take long for me to be shown to be wrong about that. Pete had so many amazing qualities that made him easy to root for and I was proud to call our head coach. No once should ignore the terrible defence that he was responsible for, but the real indictment on his stewardship the last few years was his failure to put together a difference-making staff. Jury is out on whether Mike has done so 1st rep. but the process gives me a lot of confidence.

Great piece, Rob. That Quandre Diggs tweet provides such a contrast. I was kind of surprised to learn that Mcdonald was never in the military. He hasn't been in Seattle long, and I'm already of the opinion that he's got an interesting mix of leadership traits. There's clearly some self awareness there, and a dedication to vision from the top on down throughout the org. chart.

Macdonald's hiring of the coaching staff spoke volumes to me and to date has shown that who he chose were the best available in their roles and I loved that. The improvement in the team is there for all to see and should give everyone confidence that this new era is heading in the right direction.

Amen. You can see it even in his press conferences when someone asks a thought-provoking question and he actually thinks about response before answering, unlike Pete would often dismiss questions that were difficult. My least favorite moment with Pete, and the moment when I knew it was time to move on from him, was actually years ago when the team was struggling on defense and he said something to the effect of "We don't have any answers, we are trying everything." That is absolutely unacceptable from our head coach and pathetic. I am not one of these Pete apologists who just give him credit for the Super bowls and overlook his lack of leadership. I think Pete did a good job, had great timing with his philosophy and was blessed with an unbelievable roster during a time of transition in the NFL. Pete was never able to adapt and, as he put it himself, had no answers. This coach has an approach to football that is far more exciting for me and I can't wait to see where it goes.

I remember when it seemed like I was the only fan calling for Pete to be fired. I was savaged, ravaged, mutilated and violated by the other fans. Then I found Rob, who articulated why Pete should be fired, and I knew I wasn't alone. Slowly, other fans began coming out of the shadows into the light, and after three straight years with arguably the worst defense in the league, the tipping point had been reached. I'm so grateful for the new direction of the team, that JS can assert himself, that J Allen is doing such a wonderful job running the organization. It all feels so right. 😎

I believe Pete’s biggest downfall was his loyalty to ce retain players and especially his last coaches. He stayed with his OC and DC too long. They let him down causing him to get fired, but I do agree it was time for a change ange. It had be ten yrs since the SB and. Every year since e our last one, we got further away. It was sad to see him go down be cause. of his loyalty.

Great article from Brady and appreciate your take on it too, Rob. Clearly there was a need for change but it wasn't change for its own sake (which would have been a disaster) but change for the right reasons. Coach Mike has had a promising start and I can't wait to see where this goes.
As for the upcoming game, I am actually expecting it to be a loss. Of course I want them to win, but Detroit is very good and a few years ahead of us right now. As long as Seattle is competitive and plays them tough and puts out maximum effort, I won't be too upset about the final score. We're going to lose a few games this year; just always want to look like we belong at the dance. Still, hoping for an upset and 4-0 but if we lose, I'm not going to read too much into it.

Pete didn't hold his players accountable because that SB squad held each other accountable, on and off the field and played with a extremely high standard and that made pete too comfortable and assume every team would do the same thing. Even his USC days those players held each other accountable and played on a extremely high standard.

Remember all the Arguments you’d have with the Petey boys where they would absolve him of everything, talk in circles with nonsensical arguments, swear he would fix things, accept his bad hires, defend his mediocre to below average results, not care that his archaic schemes were being cooked, or when his choices in personnel never worked out, and he was beyond reproach in their minds? All those poor souls finally shut their mouths by the end of the season for the most part, and now we see this team fight every down until the whistle blows. And despite the growing pains we’ve seen at times during the first three games we are undefeated going into the 4th week of the season. We would be no better than 1-2 if Pete were still here. Don’t get me wrong, Pete was a great coach in both college and the pros, but it was time for a change, and we found the perfect fit in Mike Macdonald. The future is now, and it is looking mighty bright.

Loved the article and your insights Rob ❤ I loved Pete but it was time. His arrogance and hubris was his downfall at the end. Mike Mac was the perfect hire at the perfect time; reset, young roster, mix of vets and young guns…but holding them all accountable starting with himself. I can’t wait to see how the season goes against better teams than first 3. I think Mike & players are excited about the challenges and are diving into it head first (with better tackling 😂) 🙌🏻🙌🏻👏🏻👏🏻💙💚🇨🇦

I feel like a lot of us said in the offseason that we expect there's going to be bumps in the road this year and some of the troubling trends of the last few seasons may take some time to be fully eradicated, but that it felt like Macdonald was the absolute right choice to take this team into the future.
It seems to me like things are playing out exactly that way so far, plus we have a nice 3-0 start to enjoy as a bonus.
I'm really looking forward to seeing what other strides the team can make this season, and especially after another offseason when Macdonald and his staff can devote more time and energy to another draft.

@@banksta3 Early Wagner had those seasons of no missed tackles, and his tackles were forceful right at the spot, tremendous talent and key to the Super Bowl teams. Later Wagner had seasons of no missed tackles, because he wasn't able to cover as much space and just wasn't there to have a missed tackle, and the tackles when he got there, weren't forceful and carriers could fall forward for another yard or two. Love Bobby, but age catches everyone, unfortunately.

I loved reading Brady Henderson‘s piece and watching his video. I think accountability is huge and it is definitely needed when raising up younger men. I love what Pete Carroll brought to this team, but near the end he just seemed like everyone’s buddy. I did find it funny that Diggs was the one mentioning Carroll treated the guys like professionals when he was one of the most immature/unprofessional guys on the team.
Macdonald is definitely a breath of fresh air and what this team needed to move in a forward direction!

While the offensive line has been subpar to be generous, the team overall has been quite refreshing. It has been a brilliant job bringing in MacDonald by ownership and management and I’m excited to see what is yet to come.
That’s not something I could say in the previous four years.

There is such a difference in the way Mike gives interviews and the way Pete did. Mike's interviews are honest, to the point and engaged with each reporter. Pete's interviews were the same damn thing every week whether we won or lost. He gave what we all called a Tony Robinson motivational speech... every stinking interview. Russel was the SAME EXACT WAY! They could stand at the podium for 30 minutes and did not say one god damned thing about birds the game went. Near bumper stickers abd fortune cookie bullshut! Every damn time. THAT had a whole lot to do with why Marshawn Lynch refused to give interviews! Point blank period. He was NOT going to say the bull💩 things 'They' wanted him to say. He stood his ground which is where the infamous line Beastmode became famous. "IN JUST HERE SO I DON'T GET FINED . We loved #24 then and we love him now. You never saw Marshawn giving Pete a neck rub on the sideline of a game before, DID YA? HELL NO you didn't. Marshawn has been to every game this year and he's gonna be there when we win the Superbowl! Go Mike. GO Seahawks 💙💚💙💚

You can let players have a lot of freedom when 1) they are very talented, 2) they are highly competitive, and 3) they are, overall, internally motivated--they don't need butt-chewing to play with their hair on fire. For awhile there, we had that. Then we didn't. The good news, I think, is that the right coach can coach up those that need external "incentives" to play to the top of their abilities. Sounds like Mac is one such coach. Pete was not. Sounds like Mac will find out which player needs what, and provide it as necessary, or step back and let the player provide it himself if he's built that way.

  •  3 місяці тому

Accountability for sure. One thing I think isn't talked about enough (yet), and we will only see it reveal as this defense becomes great... and that is that this guy IS a defensive scheme master. I mean, we assumed/hoped he was because of what we saw at Baltimore, but could he repeat it? It's looking already like he can. He's a true X's and O's guy and a teacher, just like Grubb is. We have to have the superior scheme to win in the NFL, in addition to players and accountability. Great hire!

Out of the eight new coaches hired in 2024, I think we got the top guy. I'm not convinced those other seven coaches would have been better than Pete. Just different. So you thinking it was better to fire Pete and roll the dice, well, you rolled an 8 on a eight sided die.

It goes to show there are many ways to win a championship. I was banging the drum for Pete to go after 2018, but his laissez-faire attitude towards micromanaging did win a ring.
Now maybe he was just lucky to find the perfect storm of players that happened to perform best with such a long leash. Or maybe they could have been even better. We'll never know, but it's clear that the last few rosters needed to be pushed.
As it pertains to the conditioning stuff, I remember KJ Wright talking about how some of the guys are going to have a rude awakening now that Pete's gone. As somebody that signed elsewhere after a long tenure here, that comment stood out for me.

Rob, this article from Brady reflects very badly on JS and to some extent on Jody. They will have seen Pete up close on a daily basis, seen the decline and they both have and had the power to do something about it. Now they both aren’t football people, but surely they could see the decline in general play and why didn’t they feel the need to do something about it until it was too late and Seahawks looked like a embarrassment.
I recognise what Pete has done, but like you been calling for change for years. MM is like most top performing coaches, has high standards and won’t accept 2nd best in attitude on and off the playing field. MM took Baltimore to NFC champ game and I see no reason in time why the same can’t happen here in Seattle.

Pete had the players partying a bit too much.

At least we don't have to hear Pete use the word "friggin" or "frikin" anymore. Pete was more open in talking about injuries than Mike. Mike is more informative other than that. Did Mike learn to not go for two in the first half when it is not yet necessary, if it becomes so, from his first game mistake?

Not sure if MM is the man to replace Carroll ( give it time, but looks promising) but Carroll maybe should have gone about 20 mins after SB46 ...Anyway fresh broom was overdue lets see what happends as the season unfolds. looking at the fixtures we have Falcons, Bills, Rams 49ers twice ,thats the meat of the season , we will know more after that , until then GO HAWKS....

He may have been the only coach in Seahawk history to WIN a Superbow. He was the only coach in Seahawks history who CAUSED the Seahawks to LOSE THE EFFING SUPERBOWL!!

Bring back Pete Carrol. This teams SUCKS and it proves it wasn't Pete. Geno Smith is horrible, backup QB is horrible. Just about everything on this team is horrible. What an embarrassment. This used to be the Legion of Boom team!!! Mike Macdonald has done NOTHING, there's no difference at all.

Fire Pete in 2018 and trade Russ to Cleveland to draft Josh Allen 😭

How would that have worked? John drafted a punter and a wr from '17-'20. Would be fun to have Allen but the team would have still sucked with 4 straight years of near wasted drafts.

You can tell immediately from the accent that this guy doesn’t know anything about football. Pete is a hall of fame coach Why do you care about the conditioning test? When in Pete’s long tenure was played fitness an issue for the team? I’ll wait……. Pete would have kicked it in overtime against the Rams. Huge coaching mistake by Macdonald. It was a HUGE mistake to fire Pete Carol John Schneider should have been fired. It will take the Seahawks a long time to be good again.

@iron_bison you do, and while I like the hire and what I've seen. I would just like some pause. If we have a great season and lose in the first round. Or even lose to good teams in the regular season, then the narrative will quickly change.
