Boeing’s Starliner is probably the biggest failure in the space industry in 2024, maybe even in recent years. They’ve constantly been in the news for their delays and problems. Many people are asking why they don’t just stop the project instead of wasting billions on it. But Boeing kept going for years, fixing one issue only for another to pop up. Now, it looks like they’re finally realizing it might be time to cancel the project. Today, we’ll look at what’s happening and what could happen next. Before we dive in, don’t forget to check out our Starship models on eBay through the link in the description.
Boeing’s Starliner capsule was originally planned for a brief 8-day mission to the International Space Station, but the mission extended much longer-lasting nearly three months-due to various technical problems. Initially, the crew was supposed to return after a short stay, but the Starliner faced multiple issues that delayed its journey back to Earth.
One of the major problems involved the spacecraft’s thrusters. Shortly after reaching orbit, five of its Reaction Control System thrusters failed due to overheating caused by a malfunction during a manual flying exercise ahead of docking with the International Space Station. This created concerns over the system’s reliability, particularly during crucial phases like undocking and reentry. NASA and Boeing engineers also discovered leaks in the helium system, which is used to pressurize the thrusters, adding to the list of issues that needed to be addressed before bringing the spacecraft back safely.
While the spacecraft eventually returned to Earth without its crew, these delays and technical failures significantly impacted public confidence in Boeing’s ability to manage the program. Boeing has been under pressure for years due to constant setbacks in the Starliner program, leading to billions of dollars in losses. The company lost around $1.47 billion in 2022 and continued to report significant financial hits in 2023 due to ongoing technical challenges. This raised questions about the future of the Starliner program, and many are speculating that Boeing might be considering canceling the project altogether, especially as they continue to struggle with meeting NASA’s requirements for crewed flights.
Many people have been calling on NASA to cancel the Starliner program due to its repeated delays and technical issues, but NASA has continuously given Boeing more chances after every setback. You might wonder why NASA has been so committed to Starliner despite these problems. To understand this, it’s important to look at how NASA’s Commercial Crew Program works and how Boeing became a key player in this initiative.

Cancel Boeing. Boeing is going nowhere. SpaceX has the most brilliant man in the world to run the company. Just watch the company performance.
Gwynne Shotwell, SpaceX president and CEO, has been in charge of SpaceX since 2008.
"NASA Finally To Cancel Boeing's Starliner"? I don't think so.
Doesn’t do any good to have a backup company when they can’t get human flight certified. The govt does sole source contracts all the time.
Boeing needs to refund the taxpayer money wasted on StarLeaker. NASA didn’t damage Boeing’s reputation, Boeing did that all on their own.
If I were musk, I would increase the ride per capsule by $10 million per flight. If the federal government complains, I would say I would have to raise money for that stupid FAA fine you imposed.
Love it
That would be a dick move.
It's a good thing you're a YT commenter instead.
NASA awarded SpaceX $843 millions to deorbit the ISS in 2030. There's no practical reasons why SpaceX would want to renegotiate its ISS taxi contract.
Excellent ideal❤❤
Adios Boeing
The background 'music' is irritating.
As much as I don't want to say this, but Boeing has to come up with a new version, or end the program, or stick to commercial airline flight. I really feel bad for them, but they weren't ready to fly, and rushed the flight. Dragon on the other hand, is unmatched. "if its not broken, don't fix it."
They have to go back to step one, and re-do the whole darn craft.
Thanks for the episode.
Boeing wouldn't cancel starliner up-until now because it was just to good of a CASH COW.
Boeing lost over $1.5 billions due to delay and cost overrun. It is looking to offload its space division to potential buyers.
So saddening that a spacecraft such as Boeing could have harmed the ISS astronauts not to mention that Boeing placed astronauts in harm by launching a spacecraft that was designed flawed and Boeing knew of these issues before launch. Boeing incompetence has come to the forefront with miss management and failure. 🛑
SpaceX is the future. Miles ahead of anyone.
Added bonus:
Replace SLS by Star ship : cost reduced by 3 orders of magnitude
The Starship is now launched by SpaceX for the Goverment.
According to the law this means that all licencing is exempted
Every vehicle that goes into space that is intended to dock with anything else. Should be able to remotely undock in an emergency or otherwise. The Starliner should never of been allowed to dock because they had to rewrite the computer data to disengage from the ISS.
Starliner is a lemon 🍋 we are stuck with.
It should be canceled and Dream Chaser should be used for crewed missions.
Good. Now give the tax payers a refund. Cough it up Boeing…
The FAA needs to come down hard on Boeing
Click bate
Where is the FFAA investigayion on Starliner?
FAA only investigates aerial accidents. Space mishaps are not under its purview.
Blue Origin is probably ahead of Boeing
BO was interested in buying the Starliner program from Boeing but couldn't agree on the price tag so backed out.
The Starliner crew, Suni and Butch have lost at least 1% of their lives while being stuck in space due to Calhoun's hubris and incompetence. How should they be justly compensated for all of the various aspects of their time on this Earth being squandered? Think of what more than one whole entire year of being deprived of your family? That is called irreparable harm and it needs to be compensated for. How much $$$ is enough? It seems incalculable. It is certainly in the many millions of dollars $$$. What say you?
You have no ideas what you are talking about. Sunny and Butch are elated they got an accidental extended stay aboard ISS according to their families.
Boeing hires based on diversity. SpaceX hires based on best qualified.
No basis for this false comment. Boeing's long standing issues with quality control began with top management's focus on profit.

DOJ is suing SpaceX for not hiring diversity. But they are not suing Boeing. What does that tell you.
