Just Plane Weird (Budgie the Little Helicopter & Jimbo and the Jet Set review)

- After 4 months of scripting, editing and asking other people, I'm proud to release my very first professional review. In this video I take a look at 2 talking aeroplane shows, Jimbo and the Jet-Set from the 80s and Budgie The Little Helicopter from the 90s. Expect more reviews like this in the future from me. This is probably the most ambitious project I've worked on, I hope you all enjoy!

thomas is less a dark show it's more a innocent kids show, i remember thomas in 2010 to 2018 on Discovery kids

Knowing that Budgie was first created in a series of children's books by a member of the Royal Family at the time of the late 1980's is actually quite interesting to know about.

Lately I've been subbing to all you poopers but I wanted to check this out it was pretty good.
Looking forward to when you guys do more watch through commentary with Thomas.
Although Budgie is a better-looking show, I do prefer the human designs from Jimbo. Budgie's human designs look too generic. But I think the model episdoes of Jay Jay The Jet Plane are superior because they went the extra mile and actually used models and green-screen. Even the CGI version of Jay Jay is quite interesting as they used motion-capture airplane models as well as for the faces as early as 1997. But Budgie and Jimbo don't look creepy compared to Jay Jay.
I remember seeing this Korean show called The Airport Diary. It's actually pretty decent and you can find an English dub on UA-cam.

as a Kid in the early 90's i used to watch both of these shows and loved them both, Thomas will always be number 1 in my book but both Jimbo and Budgie will always have a place in my heart, tho i do hope they do a 30th anniversary DVD or Bluray release of Budgie as at last check he has only been released on VHS where as most of Jimbo and the Jet set can be found much easier on disc
I think if they did a budgie Revival not only should they get Kerry Shale back to Reprise his role as Chuck but I think it would be awesome if they got John Hasler as Budgie
And if the humans don’t treat the aircraft and ground vehicles like their sentient in the revival, Then The aircraft and ground vehicles should communicate to the humans with vehicles noises. Like how they do the animals in animals cartoons.
I remember watching budgie as a kid on VHS and I loved it. I need to rewatch it some time.
My biggest issue with it is chuck, he is so one note and while he's funny he can be a little repetitive. On the humans however I loved them in this show. While often their stories don't have a big impact on the main plot they are often used to set it up and both the mechanics are entertaining to watch. It has an almost toy story feel to it with the humans never really interacting with the characters but making the world feel fuller even when they do very little. Though I can defiantly see where your coming from as if you don't enjoy watching the humans they take up a lot of time. On the art style I think it was for the best they changed it from the books, honestly come of the drawing are a little too realistic for me and are a little unnerving.
I don't think I had ever seen jimbo and honestly it seems that was for the best XD. For me the art style falls into the uncanny valley in the same way JJ the jet play does for me. Story wise it really feels like thomas but not trains with no true identity. With budgie its different enough, both in length and writing style that it has a charm to it but between the rushed animation and lacklustre stories Jimbo just feels like a cashgrab.
Overall however a wonder video into two relatively unknown shows. Honestly would be really interested to hear your thoughts on some of the other episodes of Budgie in future. Especially that acid trip of an episode where they dream they are fish.
I think that Lionel is racist towards Chuck because he’s American that’s why Chuck never does anything.
Fun fact, the studio that animated Budgie also animated one of my favorite shows, which is called Dino babies, a children’s BBC show that is very underrated and has only a few found episodes and the rest are dubbed.
21:54 the humans also have conversations with the vehicles 🚗 in tugs as well. The humans spoke to the tugs through megaphones 📣 📢 .
I dunno how popular Budgie was nationwide, but in my little corner of the UK it was a one-year wonder of sorts. Everywhere you looked for about 12 months before vanishing as fast as it appeared.
Looking back at Jimbo, it really does show how cheap the animation and how incredibly short the runtime of the episodes were. True some other shows did have the same runtime but they actually did seem like legit episodes and not a 4 minute long advert.
I know I'm quite late to bring this up but I used to watch Budgie a whole lot all the time as a kid on VHS, And as of 2024 I still watch the show also the funny thing that both Richard Pearce and Kerry Shale who voices Budgie & Chuck in this would eventually voices Dennis & Gnasher on Tony Collingwood's take on Dennis the Menace.
I also enjoy Budgie the Little Helicopter too. While that may not have the success of sentient vehicles of children's media, it's still a really good show.
Also, Kerry Shale's Chuck voice would later go on for Harold in the US dub of Thomas the Tank Engine since they're both helicopters.
Jimbo just looks like an aviation version of All Engines Go.

Planes is a movie 🎥 about anthropomorphic planes ✈️, Pedro the airplane and little Johnny jet are short films about anthropomorphic planes ✈️ and the airport diaries and super wings are tv 📺 series about anthropomorphic planes ✈️ too. And in super wing’s case, the vehicles can transform.
