Amazing review. Objective, informative, humble and concise. Every review should be like this!
Thank you I highly recommend this tutorial ua-cam.com/video/_VVhqNckX04/v-deo.htmlsi=aLOz6NFDyTaXVC_5
Nicely done. Thank you for the video.
Thanks for sharing!! I was wondering about it myself..thank you

Great video! You can really see how the gray "screen " reacts with the ambient light. It's an excellent presentation.
Thank you . I 've made 3 video for this screen in total dont forget to visit other tutorial videos in my channel
Thank you you did a outstanding review. I truly appreciate the double made things a lot easier to understand.
Thank you but after this video I made lot of projector screen guides. This material has very narrow side angles and projector you see is Optoma UHD35 4K 3600 lümen bright projector You cant achive same result with cheap single LED 250 anailumen models dont forget about this 😊
ua-cam.com/video/BD8bY7oh5_k/v-deo.htmlsi=t0FA63XvFKJ8eV_x this video is new and shows pro level side angles better ALR screen and I also showed entire screen material gamut (nearly in another video ) in my channel

I got the WEWATCH $25 gray silver screen and made a huge difference. Especially watching videos with a lot of white in the background.
The most honest comparison test so far. I'm stuck on the same dilemma. Purchased an LED / DLP projector. Super bright. HIgh lumens. But the trade off is poor black levels. I even painted the wall and ceiling black. Painted side walls dark. Put dark side curtains on both sides near the screen. Helped a little by altering my perception. But not enough. Even watching in ECO mode. Or putting an ND2 filter on. Or watching at night with all light sources off. So I've purchased a cheap 130" grey screen fabric. I should get it tomorrow. And I will compare. If the grey material is better than the white, then with the help of my wife and her sowing skills, I'm going to trim it, punch holes around it, make sleeves to put the rods through and replace the white screen material from 'Elite' screen with the grey. I can always go back to white later if I change my mind. It's a lot cheaper than buying another screen and frame. Or maybe I can wrap my 120" fixed frame to make it look frameless? Hmmm. Again, thanks for the video. Definitely looks better.
ua-cam.com/video/te6JSaT3cRc/v-deo.htmlsi=BY22VQKt289HSxM0 in this video you can watch how proper ALR screen creates perfect black. Thank you for watching.
Grey screens helps for black and ambient but these are cheap and low quality materials and view angle is very small. if you want to get best blacks for cheapest you need to paint the room with dark colors like cinema on the sides blackout curtains and use a screen with black lines on top and buttom. Thank you for watching and dont forget to subscribe and share for support 😊
bro im considering something similar but browsing the interwebs to see if anyone else has done it first.. I got a 120" elite white 16:9 screen but my projector is high lumens.. Wondering if I could DIY the grey fabric to the back side of the projector screen? This would allow me to have best of both worlds possibly, a white screen and grey screen just flip between the two when needed? Good luck to you would like to know how it went
How did it go?
@@pulsefiendno you cant have best of both worlds because most of the white projector screens have black back layer for protecting from light loss. You have to choose your screen for your projector. My complete guidemabout screens hopwfully be ready in couple of monts
You'll be chasing your tale forever trying to get good blacks from a bright projector. I've owned a number of ALR screens (Black Diamond, Da-lite Parallax, DNP Supernova). None of them work that well with the lights on and all degrade the image (compared to white) in a dark room.
I have a 1300 lumen JVC and several bright Barco DLPs ranging from 3,000 to 10,000 lumen. The sacrifice necessary to get "good" blacks is not worth the sacrifice in image brightness.
My advice is to get an anamorphic lens and / or variable masking. It's only the black borders on 2.35:1 wide-screen movies that cause problems (re poor blacks). With no black bars the problem goes away.
Use the bright projector for what it's meant for. Cresting huge cinematic screens. 150"+. If you go the ALR route you will likely end up with a smaller screen. Get a 100" tv instead if that's the goal.
BRAVO!!!!!.....This was AWESOME!!!! ❤.
There are better screen materials if you have a good projector.Check out my latest guide videos .Dont forget I've used Optoma UHD35 4K projector in this video 😉
great compare. Thanks for video :)
Thanknyou for watching I made 3 tutorials with same screen dont forget to visit other tutorials in this channel
Absolutely great video this helped me make a purchase on that screen 👍
Dont forget this screen has very narrow angle and colors are shifting it is not a professional ALR Screen like ua-cam.com/video/zayyBGr3HpA/v-deo.htmlsi=RWxgTprAWll3kPoS in this video with very good side angles just like a TV rest of ALR Screen videos ua-cam.com/video/ZrW7GIu7NI8/v-deo.htmlsi=8wRj9I3pjBLNBZ5q you can look
How did you get the wrenkls out?

The flatter you get the gray screen the better it will work and it actually shows a better than it does on there if you looking at it from the side
Thank you ver much! 🇧🇷 The best exemplo!
Thanks for doing the video, very useful info, I think I'll buy a grey screen 🤓 👍
Dont forget these dont work with ultra short throw or laser tv style projectors

thank you this is the best video!!!
Thank you for response . This screen dont work with Ultra Short Throws and very narrow angle you have to project where your head is if you want to get gest picture. Littler color shifting and you have to have powerful projector if you want to use in lit enviroment because you are watching Optoma UHD35 4K Projector in this video not a Single LED 100-200$ Projector . they are very limited , but if you can make them work, they are great! silver screen have same fabric as Reflective Vests. they reflects light to same angle where light is coming from, which means you need to be close to projector, which also means you cant place projector on the ceiling it gotta be next to you
Yes you are right. If you have low budget this is a good option with very narrow field of view and they dont work with Ultra Short Throw projectors
Good video!

Nice! Good to see these sorts of tests. Which one would you recommend with a ceiling-mounted BenQ HT4550i / HT4000i with a 3m-wide screen at 3.7 throw distance in A COMPLETELY DARK ROOM? The point is simply to retain the peak white levels of a white screen, but DEEPEN the black levels - thereby expanding the contrast. Is this really possible?
You are aiming for near impossible.to retain the brightness you need to use white and if you do that you need to black out the rest of the room.
ua-cam.com/video/TFSo9TIMVTc/v-deo.htmlsi=MqCWuD3LxrpiVjQG
ua-cam.com/video/BD8bY7oh5_k/v-deo.htmlsi=oP9hU2sknXb1ZmF2 example videos shows what you need.
To Achive best contrast you need a good projectpr over 2000 ansilümen projector I recommend over 3000 ansilümen and a good long throw or Ultra short throw Screen other than that you cant catch black levels. I also see you write this under cheapest material this material cant be used if you have an angle you have to project right where your eye level and head is otherwise you will loose the reflection and brightness a lot lets face it this is cheapest material😉👍
Very good comparison , I am planning to buy this cheap grey screen as i have very less budget , The projector Viewsonic PA 503 X which i intent to use on this screen is also very cheap , So i wanted to prove that with little money good results can also be achieved , Sometimes spending more cannot guarantee good results always. Why i wish to buy this screen and DIY , 1. Width of my room is just 10 Ft and length 18 ft , So the wide angle coloration theory wont work and i may get good results as i wish to utilise 100 inches screen , 2. Its very cheap and most suited to a low budget people like me , However my Sound system is a bit expensive B&W, Wharfed-ale,Denon , For Music Marantz stereo amp , Will share the results , However what u think ? Thx for video
Thanks for your very straight forward video. Your eyes adjusted better to the ambient light than the camera did, but that is good because the camera shows us the screen images uncorrected, or at least objectively. I noticed the gray screen had a sheen to it, it was more reflective than a flat white screen. How big a difference could that be - sheen versus flat white or gray? My wall needs repainting anyway so I am researching what will do the trick to get the best brightness and colors in ambient light.
ua-cam.com/video/wquSvUlWUt4/v-deo.html /ua-cam.com/video/q_p6Fike8Yo/v-deo.html ' I've made 2 more videos about same screen and I think I've covered nearly everything. if you are wondering paint this video can give you idea ua-cam.com/video/FtqWYr_29jI/v-deo.html
in my opinion if you dont buy custom projector screen paint regular paint will be similar when lights are open.

This is very limited angle cheapest product and I used Optoma UHD35 4K DLP Projector with 3600 Ansilumen ( declerated value ) ( priced around 800$ at the time of review ) what you see is end of that setup ! so be careful what you are going to try at home 😊 ua-cam.com/video/TFSo9TIMVTc/v-deo.htmlsi=tShICyl1NY54q6PB video and ua-cam.com/video/BD8bY7oh5_k/v-deo.html video will show you professional ALR for Ultra Short Throws and Long Throw Projectors so you'll get a clear idea and final video is about all the screen materials ua-cam.com/video/k0cDMpVS2OA/v-deo.htmlsi=yzIqlmSCCkrprH74
Great to see your enthusiasm to help others, I am planning to buy epson tw 7100 , for movie and youtube videos (cosmos and beautiful landscapes). can we use any VINYL PLASTIC MATTER GREY for deeper blacks. Kindly note, My choosen Projector already have 1:100000 contrast ratio.
Grey creates deeper blacks and for your projector little light loss will not be a problem.Ambient light rejection is the most important thing.if you havent watch that part of the video dont forgetto watch all of it . You wont regret for this price. My next video is on the plan and it will be using this screen in custom way.if you are not in a hurry subscribe and wait a little😊

What is more interesting is ths screen is only working strait projection if you try to use it with ust it does not work. I made 3 videos with same screen ua-cam.com/video/wquSvUlWUt4/v-deo.html / ua-cam.com/video/q_p6Fike8Yo/v-deo.html

this screen also dont work with Ultra Short Throw models just want to remind you 😊
Hi, thank you for your videos. Can you please advice budget ALR UST screen or cloth and where to buy?
This screen does not work for ust projectors .Dont forget to watch this video I explained a lot ua-cam.com/video/q_p6Fike8Yo/v-deo.html . I am always shearching for better products and I designing products for home cinema and tech solutions.if I find something it will be in the channel stay tuned subscribed. Ust projectors are expensive no wonder custom screens are expensive too .
Thank you very much for your great comparison😀I have a k45 byintek projector with 700 ansi lumen and 18000:1 contrast.I usually use it in a dark room but sometimes also with soft ambient lights.I was looking for a tensioned and motorized projection screen to buy and found two projection screens:one white projection screen with 1.0 gain factor and 140 degrees viewing angle and one grey projection screen with 0.9 gain factor and 150 degrees viewing angle.Which one do you suggest😀?Do you suggest white or grey projection screen in general?Thank you very much in advance😀.Looking forward to your reply, best regards🤗(Sorry for my english🥲)
Grey screens create more contrast but gain level of 0.9 lowers the brightness but after testing lot of stuff as far as I can tell if the contrast and black level is good you dont see that loss of peak brightness. And also grey screens does not reflect lights coming from ceiling and white walls in darkened room with white walls.if you can put this screen to a wall by stretching on a wood diy frame you can create tv style screen for arround 50$ in total. But not every scenario is for fixed screen .That is up to you. If I have tested grey screens I would have gone grey in my setup but I've installed white screen and I dont have much options to go back and do all over again. Short Answer I would go grey 😊
But if you can darken your room I would fisrt go for upgrading my projector.
Screen is like brakes suspension or wheels it helps in total but they are not power source.Maybe instead of buying a motorized screen you can go for selling your projector and buyin one with 2000 ansilumen and above model (might be second hand too) then later wben you have the budget you can buy screen ?
@@homecinematech Thank you very much for your kind and complete answer😍I wiill surely upgrade my projector and go for the grey screen😀Thanks again and good luck for your great contents🤗

Nice! Can these be stitched together for a larger screen? Or would the seam be too annoying? Any suggestions for low-cost ALR screen that is much larger, for a meeting room?
Stichng screen is not an option because it will create a line very disturbing.I've seen 133" www.aliexpress.com/item/1005001634072492.html / www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005221345252.html / but if you need bigger sizes than you can think using light glue to glue screen material on a surface side by side and maybe little overlay betwwen 2 screens
Great video! Is it possible to use this screen material with the Hisense c1 on a 150 inch screen in a dark room? According to some tests the projector has just over 2000 ansi lumen. Thanks for the answer.
if you purchased something good like Hisense C1 I recommend professional screen like vividstorm. Side angles and color shifting of this screen is not good and also colors are not accurate. if you care about what you watch ua-cam.com/video/BD8bY7oh5_k/v-deo.htmlsi=lko7lg6J2wPYhy2W this type of screens could help you better. ua-cam.com/video/k0cDMpVS2OA/v-deo.htmlsi=vlwzV4kAESHb6geA video also will help you to see different materials
Thanks for a very informative video. Im thinking of getting the Epson ls12000 projector which will be ceiling (9' height) mounted about 12' away from the screen. Would you think this would work for just the straight viewing angle? Thank you in advance for your help.
This material is not ideal for projector of that level.Viewing angle is very narrow and I showed in my other video you have to project from where you sit (same height otherwise you cant see anything you have to sit or eye level yourself from exact point where you project
ua-cam.com/video/q_p6Fike8Yo/v-deo.htmlsi=KVaTEuRCrmgHgCdA show angle problem of this projector.
I just bought two of Aliexpress. Awaiting the delivery of my first UST projector as well. I did not have the money for ALR screen so this seems like a good compromise for the time being.
This is the most budget friendly way to achive alr screen. You need to create tension for this screen create cheap frame or stick it to wall ? But dont forget you need to project this screen from strait angle because angle is very narrow.
İf you have ust projectors it might not work properly these are for regular projectors and side angles and below above is restricted like I've showed you. You need to buy expensive alr screens if you are going to use ust projectors from 45 degree angle below. İf you dont cancel your order and try them please let us know the results

I see your screen is wrinkled, any idea how it can be flattened while installed? I have thought of using a hair dryer or install a weight but worried I may createote damage.
Mine is installed over a window and sometimes left open during hot days of summer so I have perfectly flat screen fabric where window gave it heat and very wrinkled wavy fabric where there is wall behind the screen and it didn't get heat over time. We basically used the screen as a window shade for a few years and now wrinkles are really annoying me, although it's hard to notice in most scenes. The left and right sides also have curled in which is very noticeable when watching football for instance.
ua-cam.com/video/wquSvUlWUt4/v-deo.html in this video I showed you can convert it to rollup and how. I also mentioned about dont use it as a shun shade !. I showed how you can iron it and make it wrinkle free as possible. if you subscribe the channel more is on the way 😊 if you havent watch best projector screen for 25$ ua-cam.com/video/wG4fpVeI9lk/v-deo.html you will be shocked
It is even better to put 6500k or dynamic ambient light leds under the screen to light the background just a tiny bit to percieve better blacks on screen and it is better for eyes.
I remember I've done that in ua-cam.com/video/eKeH_SmOwvs/v-deo.html video to show how you can enjoy philips hue smart lights and also use them in cinema room
@@homecinematech Great job!
@@adrs2 thank you
the gain is very high on that material, definitely much higher than 25%. I wouldn't be surprised if it's closer to 3, or higher gain.
View angle is very narrow and color shift with angle is obvious but still this is kind of alr for longthrow projectors
@@homecinematech view angle is soo narrow, that my left eye see a little darker image than my right! Yes, no joke. I have 20/20 eyes. And make 3d videos since 20 years, so i know what i feel, when one of my eye see a different picture than the other (binocular rivalry)
@@relaxvideo3d if it is that bad it might not be same screen as this this screen has atleast 50 degre angle if you are projecting with angle you are having problem because of your throwing angle you have to project 90 degree straight angle same with your head to this screen if you want better maferials you have to pay more than this
Is there light bleed behind it?
The surface seems very smooth, does this affect sharpness ?
Thank you for showing this great cheaper product
Ligh behind the back is my philips hue strips for my ambient light . Without opening them I cant show you proper visuals . I did not want to shoot full dark video just to show screen itself but also enviroment. Sharpness is good and contrast is even better for this cheap price. You have to project from strait angle not low not high from ceiling just strait to screen other than that you see narrow view angle. if these are not problem this is bargain
when you find time try to watch my tutorials for creating cinema at home ua-cam.com/video/Emj_Ns4c5AU/v-deo.html
Have you tried rotating the gray screen 90 degree? This would probably increase the side-to-side viewing angle.
Have you tried to rotate 120" screen and get onle 50-60" out of it ? This screen is build to use this angles I have 3 different videos for this screen also included some diy work.Watch them and if you have questions I try to answer
This really seems to be an ongoing thing I love watching projector UA-cam videos , every time there's always someone who's comparing different screen colors etc with ambient light with the living room light with the drapes open I don't get that I mean it's very simple just like trains operate on train tracks fish swim in the ocean well projectors require 100% light controlled rooms that's just the way it is and as far as these supposed gray or black screens that show better blacks they do and they don't because there's a trade off when you buy a projector with really bright lumens and you stick it on a gray screen or a black screen even with light controlled you are going to get blacker blacks but you're also going to lose those lumens because now the brightness is not going to be as bright so you got to ask yourself which one's more important to you a really bright picture or black blacks bcuz that's exactly what you're giving up kind of have to find your middle ground . If your goal is obtain the brightest brights im& the darkest dark simultaneously then you have to get a tv .
I totally agree but in my ne UST projector video without ALR I've showed how much contrast you can get ( my ALR professional screen is on the way) ua-cam.com/video/wGu04GGoVO4/v-deo.html I hope you loved the content and I would love to have your feedback at my other videos
Oooh man that an excellent comparaison.but its hard to choose its like chosing betwin your two little kids .you can not.
for dark room setup white is always winner with most bright image but for lighted room you should think about ALR screens for budget you have

if you've liked this screen ua-cam.com/video/wquSvUlWUt4/v-deo.html dont forget to watch this video
My projectors lens shift ranges from 110% to 130%. Will this be a problem you think? How far above your head can the projector be allocated before viewing angle becomes a problem on lets say 3 meters viewing distance from the projector to the screen that is 100"?
ua-cam.com/video/q_p6Fike8Yo/v-deo.html video is the last episode of cheapest ALR screen and I realized perfect visual can be achived when you watch from the angle you projected it should be closed to 90 degre to a screen . Projector had the hight of my head in this video just side of me that was it. I havent try the top but in the link that I've sent you I've tried reverse projecting from buttom and result was awful if I did not sit the same angle I've projected. I dont recommend to us this screen from more than 15" of angle from top
Very nice comparison! This grey one has a gain of 1.1. Do you think a gain of 0.9 would make a big difference? I have an option for a motorized one with 0.9 in my area.
Well for mee I can make my room fully dark so white screen is better for bright images but if you are goingto use it with ambient light or you want better deeper blacks than 0.9 could be your choice. Also your projector brightness is important what do you have as projector ?
@@homecinematech I have the Epson TW-7100. 3000 lumens, but I use it in Eco Mode so it's probably more around 1000 lumens(maybe a little more). I have a white 1.5 gain screen at home but my walls are super white so I hoped that maybe a grey screen could improve the contrast and the light spill to the walls.

ua-cam.com/video/wG4fpVeI9lk/v-deo.htmlsi=KwOcahGrJEXG3laH after watching this video if you are not looking for lighted room use I recommend 2 curtains one Black or dark to block the sun and second one lighter color for better projection . good explanatory video, if I had found it before buying that fabric that is not worth it. As you well indicate, you have to be completely focused on the field of vision, but the projector must also be in the middle of the canvas both horizontally and vertically. And what you have not noticed is the horrible reflection that it produces behind you, it is an uncomfortable reflection and I would say that it is dangerous, definitely wasted money, greetings.
Well when your room lights are on you dont see reflection behind you and if you want to use is as tv with lights on because fully dark room is not for everyday use . This is cheapest way to create ambient light rejection and I think it works for the money. I didnt say it is the best screen 😊 For this price there could be compromises.

if it is light green there will be no problem you can adjust your projector to get the colors right but. if its a dark green than you have to buy or create white or ALR screen surface. if your walls are not too close to each other than you can use white screen in dark room ua-cam.com/video/te6JSaT3cRc/v-deo.htmlsi=6pnmWZ01l6I0qLzg this video will explain some

That is going to be the place I'm putting my projector so lmk if you can test it out or if you know (purchasing grey or white screen is better?)
this screen has very narrow angle and you have to project directly same angle as your head or your eyes other wise if you throw from any angle you have to sit that angle to see the screen. because this is very cheap amateur screen.

Being cheap does not always means somting is not good or decent enough.
You can paint your wall with pro paints and create better image quality than lot of screens on market !
This video was just for giving an idea how you can use it in a room if you are in a budget.
in my personal opinion if you have more than 1000$ budget and a room for cinema setup .
Painting the wall and buying most qualified (expensive) projector is best way to go since it can be fully dark room .
Others with motorized setups and ALR screens are for people with more than 1500$-2000$+ Money and decent room .

Para que un proyector triunfe de dia debe arrojar lumens que arrojen colores oscuros rojo verde azul amarillo, no tener mas brillo si no la versión mas oscura del color para que la luz del dia no se lo lleve
it's not just about being dark but right material because if you get darker screen grey or darker grey than you need lot of extra light because screen will absorb all of it . ua-cam.com/video/jk79bCqtdLo/v-deo.htmlsi=BX-Z_FElTU4UMh7Q video is about this and ua-cam.com/video/dYQVPN0LImk/v-deo.htmlsi=kjdfY9fXwl1yAqwg video shows how a professional ALR + Projector Works Just Like a Mid to High Level TV
You mentioned the loss of certain viewing angles but is seating distance also affected?
I dont understand what you totaly mean . as long as you seat right infront of the screen there is no problem but if you go more than 20-30 degree side angles you lost contrast . My next couple videos is about this screen material dont worry I will create content explaining many things
@@homecinematech I just meant that for every screen there is an optimal distance from where you should view that particular screen. So I'm wondering if using a grey screen affects that viewing distance or not. In other words, will a grey screen look sharper if you sit closer to it than a white screen or is it better to sit further away than a white screen?
@@dinnerfor1540 I havent tested that . Because I always Seat 3 meters or more for 100" images. will add this questions answer to my second next video.

In such type screen where is best place to put projector? I have plan t9 make screen straight from bed, and only place for device would be on the left side of bed on the cabinet. About the height of the top edge of screen. Head will be exactly 1/3 of screen from bottom. As per product description it should be fine. What do tiu think guys?
This screen needs 90 degre strait projection angle if you project with more than 10 degrees you will see darker bad screen.View angle is very narrow.if you want to try you can but I made 3 different video with same screen you can check tem out
Im going to buy dark sheets. Do thread counts help if there's more?
İt is not about being dark but being reflective so you need silver toned screens and bright projectors to overcome ambient light in this video you see optoma uhd35 4K projector
how much better would your roll up ALR screen be vs this cheap on , if on a diy frame. just from the front, I dont need side anything.
Side angles changes a lot for view quality like cheap tv versus decent qled tv models. You have to project not just straight but you have to project right where your head is with this screen material if you will have angles you will have some issues. You can live with this as a cheap solution but Roll down ALR is the one to choose for good over 500$ projectors in. My opinion but it is very cheap ypu can buy and test try to use it if you want 😊
The fabric composition and type of weaving in the threads will have a bias on the light angle. To be able to get consistent distribution of light, best to have smooth, flat white color, surface, IMO. 15 years ago, I installed a DIY Home Depot 8ftx4ftx1/4" thick flat white hardboard panel, which cost about $18 dollars, on my family room, to create a sort of home theater experience screen, using a Vivitek D3538W-3D 3200 lumens 2D-3D projector, we use to watch regular dvd movies but also some cool 3D movies with 3D glasses.
White is the best if you have dark room walls are also need to be black because if the ceiling and walls are not too distant light reflects back to screen (in my room setup it does) this cheap alr is not the best screen but effective one.
@@homecinematech I would agree, but this also depends on the surface ability to reflect back light to the viewer, as this is what is happening, when we view screen. I have experimented with various types of fabric materials, but none, from polyester to cotton, and blends of such, including nylon, vinyl, PVC, ABS, painted surfaces, have been to my satisfaction.
The board I used, in my previous comment, has had the highest light reflection and crip image, meaning not washed out and my room is also white walls with flat matte paint, but I only use my projector on w/e nights for movies. This same board just required mounting to wall, no preparation needed, use the white side as is, it has a flat matte finish, I believe it is acrylic. The only con is that it is 8x4 ft, but for my room size of 15x16FT, it is perfect with the same projector, which I just fired up recently after a few years of not being in use.
@@MarioIArguello as a professional photographer over 15+ years we use acrylic or plexy style material for product photo shoots because they create grate reflections. I also recommend using white plexy glass and back project it with ultra shorth throw it becomes like a tv directly. fixed screen setups are not in my focus I live in flat .if I had a spare room I would paint a wall and finish the screen but if you want to hide your screens in your living room I am trying different material to teach people.Thank you for your detailed information .I will check tgat material and try tfat if I find time to do .Best wishes to you on your home cinema journey

Very interesting even surprising that grey screen performs better than white even with lights off. Presumably this is because there are still some ambient lights which are absorbed by the grey screen making picture clearer and brighter. Guess if ambient lights are comoletely shut then white screen would be better or same.

Paint prices are about 99$-150$range and this screen is about 25$ you can stretched this on to wood frame easily and put it on wall if your projector is not ultra short throw you will enjoy it. Those cheap ALR fabrics suffer from awful hotspoting. Even if projector stays dead centered you can see hotspot from light source.
