    My grandfather and I spent a fair bit of our working lives at Margam. My grandfather when it first opened in the early 60s then again in the late 60s, and myself from '93 until it closed as a traincrew depot.

    Just found this video. Well done, some excellent memories. No doubt it took you quite a while to compile this collection and the music and editing tell a good story..................Mike "Rails in Wales"....have a look at mine?

    In 1969 I was foreman at Landore when asked to take over the new depot at Margam.
    At that tine I also checked the Swansea London new Blue Pullman at the Malliphant. and given until 2 o clock in the morning to give Swindon the OK or not. I did not accept
    the offer as I had decided to live in Australia. After 48 years, I understand that Margam depot is now being scraped

    Margam was once a MASSIVE marshalling yard, among the biggest in the UK before the advent of the car, sidings everywhere far bigger than even in this video. A real pity there's no documentaries of it in action on the internet, just photos.

      There is a video taken in the 50s of the yard complex and it axle counter thingies

    Could I please use this on a facebook group page, called Disused Railways? I would credit the video to you of course. No worries if not though. I have been photographing the depot over the last couple of years, and it seems a shame to see it looking so run down and derelict now. Great video, and thanks for sharing.

      Hi, many thanks for that. I did see both videos quite a while ago. I have photographed Margam TMD, over the last couple of years. It's a real shame to see it in such a derelict state now. I have an album on facebook, that I have called Rusty Rails Of South Wales, which shows Margam TMD, amongst other disused rails. I will credit you for the videos. Many thanks once again.

    Who would of thought when you took these pictures. That 37403 would of survived and 37411 would go for scrap. Plus a few others that went for scrap when they could of been revived. Like peak national park. However love the video.

    Thanks for watching - The deopt has now gone but most of the locos that were in it are still running or stored. Most of the locos seen in the yard are now scrapped and no longer exist.
    Thank you for your kind comments

    Why did margam depot and yard just become a yard of scrap or withdrawn diesel locomotives

    • @PreservationEnthusiast
      @PreservationEnthusiast Рік тому

      All servicing is now done in Toton. It's more central to the UK. Margam needs demolition and all the old locos cutting up for scrap. Let's recycle the land!

    Beautiful engines. Why was it shut? Get the trucks off the roads. I bet Eddie Stobart would run something like that given half the chance. He owns Southend Airport after all.

  • @RailPhotoAnthology
    @RailPhotoAnthology  12 років тому

    Sorry no - there are not many left now and most of them are in the midlands. Some of the stock can been seen but you can't just walk in. I have heard there is one that will let you in for a donation to charity but I not sure where it is.

    When did it shut

    • @RailPhotoAnthology
      @RailPhotoAnthology  8 років тому

      +Yate Junction Margam Depot officially closed on 1st August 2009 but a second power unit change on 08752 kept the facility open until 17th September when 08752 was taken by low loader from Margam Knuckle Yard to Celsa Sidings. Drivers and maintenance staff began moving into the new facility at Margam Knuckle Yard from July onwards. The closure of Margam Depot now leaves south wales without any facility to undertake safe brake block changes and C xams on Class 08/09 locomotives. With very basic facilities at Margam Knuckle Yard, locomotives are now moved DIT to Toton Depot for repairs.

      Some of Totons work will be done at Didcot depot in the future with a strong rumour that Landore will be used for DB loco maintenance when Toton goes.

    • @DOCTORDROTT
      @DOCTORDROTT 8 років тому

      Big changes in the next few weeks. Landore Swansea may be used for maintenance as GWR are moving out to Malliphant. But depot changes may be a little way off as yet. Heard that the CSDC will be vacated as part of the shakeup. HS2 also has a bearing on Totons future. All sad to see, good depots going
